Bottom line, the lady who decided to buy the cherry orchards knew nothing about growing them so she left that to all the harvesters and focused on the creativity part, thus all the cherry products this store has to offer. I'm all for natural ingredients that I can pronounce with a minimal keycount but more importantly, I love dark chocolate covered anything. Enter their CABERNET CHERRIES which is enveloped with dark chocolate. This has no alcohol content but is paired wonderfully with wine. A bag is about $10 and you get a small box for free if you sign up for their promo emails. I saved a buck from the 10% discount card that I got at the end of the tour. AMAZING ladies at Chukar!! Normally you'd think you're going to Pike's Place Market for the flying fish and the tourists chanting all kinds of...well, chants, to make the fish "fly". When I was there, it seemed the tourists yelled out whatever the fish mongers said, so even if they said non-sensical stuff like "Goony Goo Goo!!" the rest of the tourists would chant in unison, just to make the fish fly and sail through the air in all its Pike glory; no matter if the chant was total non-sense or not. I am sure the fish mongers laugh daily. Of course, maybe the chants were real, but they still sounded like goo goo to me. I'm steadily reaching the age where I may need hearing aids, but I digress... So I stumble along Chukar after not getting any attention from a not-to-be-mentioned Jelly stand and it was totally unnerving to be greeted, smiled at, offered samples and literally beamed-at by cosmic feel-good-vibes from the friendly ladies at Chukar! I went from ice fields to warm sunny in less than 20 minutes...whoa? The people at Chukar Cherries are totally in love with their products and with their products and it shows. It also helps that Chukar Cherries are practically world-famous but that doesn't stop them from being very humble and still connected to their customers! I bought for myself a bag of the Honey Pecans and Cherries for Wine (a mix of Classic Dark, Cabernet Cherries, and Ultra Dark cherries). I also bought 3 other bags as gifts. My favorite was the chocolate covered honey pecans. They have a delicious thick coating of chocolate and are extremely addicting. So here's my thing, I hate candied cherries, the cherries they put on top of sundaes, cherry flavored candy...and of course, cherry flavored cough syrup. Yuck yuck yuck. So when I saw this little storefront in the Pike Place Market I almost just passed right by seeing that they sell cherries...yucky yucky. But then, I thought since it's a famous company in Seattle and all...maybe they do things differently. Oh that and my eyes spotted the free samples...so why not and see if things are different? They don't really candy cherries and make them super sugary, they simply candy them in a way that makes them last longer and then encase it in chocolate. Dried cherry basically. They have a few samples that they list on the chalkboard that they readily dispense to happy tourists, I tried the cabernet dark chocolate covered cherry...and I loved it! Sure there was more chocolate than cherry, but the cherry itself was like sweetened more condensed version of the real fruit. The cherry wasn't overwhelmed at all but came through pretty clearly anyways. Not so candied that it changes the entire cherry to become something else, it kept the essence of it! Amazing!!! Okay, I change my stance on candied cherries...Chukar Cherry Company congratulations, you've swiftly and effectively changed my mind. I also spotted a bag of chipotle dark chocolate covered cherries...that weren't on the sample list, but when I asked how those were the guy behind the counter got some out and let my mom and I try it. Wasn't a super big fan of it, but very interesting. You don't taste much of the chipotle until after you eat it, where's it's slightly smoky and spicy. I wanted it to be spicier while eating it though. The girl and the guy working were pretty awesome! Sorry, I never got their names but I will upload the pic I took soon. Both really nice and helpful and knew their products. The girl really loved the chipotle cherry and was just raving about it. Chukar Cherries was one of the food sampling stops during our Pike Place Market walking food tour and after they gave us several samples, I was HOOKED! Nicole, who was our Chukar hostess during the tour, is so knowledgeable of their products and just cherries altogether. My favorite choc covered cherries are the dark choco cabernet, milk choco truffle and my absolute most favorite of all are the cherry blossoms (with milk & white choco). The Chukar Cherries origin story I imagine is a lot like the story of the first person who ever tried to eat an oyster. Company founder Pam Montgomery one day basically decided to try some shriveled up, going bad cherries on her family's cherry tree orchard and luckily found that the cherries had become chewy over time and had sweetened in their own natural juices.
