Yeehaw, it's the Chuckwagon Cafe - As Advertised on TV! I only have one complaint. The line was atrociously long, which is no surprise since this restaurant was featured on television (in addition, it was a long weekend). Upon inquiring about the wait time, we were given a vague response: 'It'll be a bit'. Does time not exist in Turner Valley? A number - heck, even an estimate, is extremely useful for the customer and can give them the choice to stay or leave. A few people walked in, said "I'm not *that* hungry", and left. I would have done the same, but I drove from NW Calgary to be here so I wasn't budging. Luckily, time passed by quickly despite the wait (45 minutes) since I was accompanied by talkative friends. I also appreciate the fact that they take the effort to call names inside and out - that's always a bonus! The customer service is exquisite. Despite the crowded atmosphere, we were quickly take care of. The attitude is super-friendly and highly welcoming. I was incredibly impressed by the prompt service and even faster food delivery - they obviously know how to run a restaurant! As I mentioned prior, this was featured on TV. Does the food live up to the hype? Sort of. It was delicious, but it wasn't 'leap-from-my-chair-and-dance-on-the-table-my-tastebuds-are-spitting-fireworks' outstanding (it may have been a different outcome had I ordered a burger or steak). I will - however - deliver merit where it is due. I had the traditional eggs benedict (as per usual) since my passion for this delectable dish cannot be yielded. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by its unique combination of flavours. The taste leaves a different albeit positive note on your tongue; the buttery, flaky croissant melds well with the creamy Hollandaise (which lacked lemony flair, but it's still a league above the majority of restaurants) and the eggs (while a bit small) where cooked as per my request and were quite delectable. It was paired with ham, which possessed a savoury smoky flavour. The dash of nutmeg sealed these cohesive ingredients together into a pleasant symphony of hearty, rich flavour. And the hashbrowns? Oh em gee - they were incredibly tasty. They were bursting with zesty seasonings that left a lovely memory afterwards. Next time, I shall return to attempt the smoked salmon eggs Benedict! read more

Breakfast is a meal that I don't take lightly, and the Chuckwagon Cafe Does not disappoint. We were lucky to come in right before the crowd and get seated within about 10 minutes. After we had sat down there was a line out the door and I expect some people would have had to wait 30 minutes, but I would be willing to wait. After sitting down our waitress advised us of the specials and then at the end added on "... and the steak benny is delicious". I was sold. Apparently also were my friends as we all ordered the same and some coffee. I wouldn't say the service was super fast, but we knew we were going to have to wait a little while as there was a literal line out of the door. As the waitress laid out our bennies in front of us, we all knew that it had been worth the wait. The Hollandaise sauce was so delicious that I was convinced that it was Mom's home-made sauce from Easter weekend. Then immediately after that taste you get the perfectly poached egg on a delicious piece of steak. They also couldn't have chosen a better compliment than to place it on a flaky croissant. We received great service considering how packed the restaurant was. Also expect to pay for the quality you're receiving as this breakfast isn't cheap! All true Western breakfast lovers will enjoy the Chuckwagon Cafe, so don't get turned off when you see all of the motorcycles lined up outside! read more

I took my mother here for Mother's Day lunch, the menu options are very limited, meat, eggs, pancakes, fries. No salads, no sandwiches. I ordered eggs Benedict obviously the hollandaise was made from a powder mix, there were little pockets of unabsorbed powder all through it. The hash-browns were OLD they at one time were fresh cut, but mine were cold, wrinkly and tasted like they had been in a fridge for a few days.i asked the server and she assured me they were fresh made that day, I'm not stupid, I make hash-browns for my kids a lot and I can tell when they are reheated. I was hoping for more menu options for restricted diets like fresh veggie salads, or wrap sandwiches. Everything was heavy, not fresh, not homemade, a massive letdown for the high prices. I will never go back, don't waste your money, and if you do don't bother complaining because they will lie to you anyways. read more

2016, A great red barn rustic place for breakfast with great interior characteristics of the country style. This place has been praised for their burger and it lived up to its expectations. Also, do not forget to try their breakfast dishes if you are not in the mood for a burger and try their homemade pies (not sure if they still do it for 2018). The pies have limited quantity, so it is best to get there as soon as you can to nab the flavors you like. I would go back here again to try out other menu items. read more

I rarely give 5 star reviews, but this one is worthy of it. We went for Sunday brunch here a few weeks ago, drove down from Calgary. Hubby had been before and raved about it. He had the smoked meat hash (looked amazing), and I had the smoked salmon benny. Seriously the best smoked salmon benny I have ever had in my life. REAL salmon - don't know if they smoke it in house or not but damn it was good, and lots of it. It's small and clean and the decor is wood and western. Was very busy when we got there but we probably waited less than 10 minutes for a seat at the "bar". Would have been another few minutes for a table for 2 but we weren't fussy. The burgers here are flat out yummy. "Worth the drive from Calgary" yummy. Burger had a lovely texture and was nicely seasoned, and the bun was hardy (to hold burger and fixings in) and tasty. Love the decor- reminds you how local, therefore fresh, the ingredients are. Side fries are delicious, the beef barley soup was so flavourful, and the side salad has an awesome house dressing. We had a late lunch here, so no more pie left to try by closing. This was my 3rd time here, and I look forward to another trip down Cowboy trail, so I have an excuse to come back here again. read more

The drive down to Turner Valley is pretty much worth it by itself, beautiful scenery. The theme of the café itself is classic and welcoming, I feel as though I'm in the middle of the side country when I go out and always brings a smile to my face. The café is fantastic for breakfast and brunch (though it fills up quickly). I almost always order the smoked salmon Eggs Benedict with soft-poached eggs, and the eggs are always cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, it seems that they sometimes cut a few corners when busy in order to get the food out on time, as going out on holidays (ex. Mother's Day) one will find that some portions are smaller. I recently went this weekend and found that my hashbrown portion was significantly smaller than usual and I would have preferred more. Nevertheless, the Chuckwagon is definitely worth the drive out and everyone should try it at least once! read more

Had the House Burger since that is what the big draw is. Yep, its a good burger... You do Gotta Eat Here. The meat was so juicy and actually had so much flavor itself. After reading the review about the search for a burger in the Calgary Herald months ago I've had a hankering to try this place. Unfortunately its hours are a little inconvenient for travelling from Calgary and we kept on screwing up what times it's open from (8am-2pm weekdays and 8am-3:30pm weekends). Usually the only time we pass close to it is when we are heading to BC very early or coming back from fishing late. Finally the stars aligned and we managed to time it right by heading out south for some late season fly fishing and got to the Chuckwagon at 11am on a Sunday. It was not too busy with only 5 people ahead of us in line but if you're not picky there always seems to be a few stools open at the diner table and we got seated right away. During the entire time we were there, about an hour, it was pretty much non stop lineups, occasionally out the door. The other reviews are right, after 10am I guess you better be prepared for a wait. For how busy the place was, we got very friendly and attentive service which is a bit of a rarity in Calgary. Got seated and looked at the two plates our neighbours were chowing down on and boy did it look good. One plate was a very nice looking steak and homecut fries and the other an omelet of some sort. That made my menu choice even more complicated as I originally was so focused on getting one of those well talked about burgers. Well I resisted and ordered the house burger with clam chowder. Firstly I was expecting some canned reheated chowder and boy was I pleasantly surprised, lots of chucks of fresh vegetables, clams, bacon and in a broth that was not gluey or pasty like canned chowders. Now for the main draw, the burger. Nicely arranged burger, open faced, with very fresh toppings of tomatoes and a mixed baby greens instead of the usual boring iceburg lettuce leaf. The house burger had cheese, bacon and mushrooms so I knew as soon as I slapped the burger together it was gonna be one of those +2 napkin meals. Everything worked really well together and it wasn't as sloppy as I've had at other places surprisingly. The meat was very well seasoned with an interesting spice mix, it wasn't just plain salt and pepper so it added a nice subtle sweet note. They obviously make everything fresh as our order (and it seems everyone else's) took a little time to come out but honestly it was well worth it. Apparently you can buy frozen meat directly from them so I'm not sure if they own a farm or are partnered with one but they say all their meat is hormone and preservative free, so another plus in my books for them. Next time I'll have to try the steak....or the omelet....or the buttermilk pancakes....or the.....ARGH everything looked so good! read more

You definitely have to eat here!! The food is always fresh and the beef is outstanding! Excellent friendly service every time we have been. It can get very very busy during peak hours so either be prepared to wait or go when it's not as likely to be busy. I highly recommend the flat iron Benedict, and breakfast is available all day. Have been going here for years, used to always be lined up and a wait to get in. It was worth the wait. The last few times I have been here the place has been almost empty. Was there today and the service was a little slow with only two waitresses on duty and a counter person. The burger my wife ordered was good, cooked properly but a bit over seasoned. The fries were great. The pan scramble was ok, with a small amount of eggs, some packaged ham and lots of stringy cheese. Rye toast needed to be toasted more. The reason I am not overly impressed is the prices have gone up, $3.25 for a cup of weak coffee! Come on. I know it's a bottomless cup but how much bad coffee can you drink? The bill came to $45 for two people for brunch! Hopefully the summer is long and they get a lot of people again but I for one will not be going back and will be telling my riding buddies ( motorcycle) to go elsewhere for a better deal. What we weren't prepared for is the restaurant being out of quite of bit of items...no cold pop, no salad, no soup, etc.. I had a burger and it was good but a little dry, my partner had a beef dip and said it was good...but again a little dry. Great little restaurant but so, so busy! The last time I went there were four of us, we had a burger, the grown up mac & cheese, a chicken sandwich and the eggs bennie. It was all delicious and the service was awesome, friendly and efficient. I was too full for dessert but the pie looked so good I took a piece home for later and I wasn't disappointed. The only downside is the long wait for a table if you go out on the weekend. I know the owner wants to be friendly and accommodating but the restaurant is not that big and when there are 20 people outside waiting he should be able to ask people to give up their table after they have paid the bill. On the other hand, if you've eaten, are on your 6th cup of coffee and have paid the bill have the courtesy to take your conversation over to the lovely little park and open up a table for someone else. read more

The coffee is endless but it really tastes awful, it is really expensive for any thing that you get. I would not wait in the line to eat here for any item. 100% country kitchen with decor to match, Chuckwagon Café is the spot to go to for hefty and tasty food. We went for breakfast, ordering the Flat Iron Benny and the burger. First off, the meat in both was super tender and flavourful...the owner has a ranch of Murray Gray cattle and dry ages 12-18 month olds to stock the restaurant. I'd come just to buy the beef! The hollandaise on the Benny was perfect, the croissant buttery, and the potato hash tasty. The burger comes loaded with mushrooms, bacon, tomato, lettuce, homemade mustard, etc., etc. on a brioche-like bun. If you're into balls-to-the-wall burgering this is for you. I never thought I'd say this, but for me it was almost too much (for breakfast at least)...next time I'd like to try just lettuce, cheese, onion and burger sauce as this would let the meat shine even more. It's not inexpensive, but then again if you come here for breakfast you definitely won't need lunch, and the quality is great. read more

Driving to the Chuckwagon Restaurant on a Beautiful sunny day is very relaxing. There hasn't been a time where we haven't had to wait in line. The food is usually good, consistent, and fresh. The one issue that we have is the coffee, it is so weak, if you put cream in the coffee, there isn't much flavour. The water in my glass also had sandy grits floating in it. This place is about as precious as they come. Not just a restaurant, this is an institution! First of all, it is beyond adorable. It's a wagon, with three distinct eating areas and covered floor to ceiling with all kinds of relics. They had painted windows for Christmas and New Year's, too and somehow managed to up their cuteness factor even more. Food is simple and delicious. Don't come here if you're on a diet. I've eaten here twice and had the legendary eggs benny. It is BAKED in hollandaise sauce. Like, the whole thing is covered in it. This is not for the faint of heart but it is worth it. Absolutely scrumptious. This is what brunch in heaven must taste like. Everything we've had here on both visits was delicious and well cooked. This place is always packed but service is quick and we didn't have to wait long for a table on either visit. Friendly service and completely unpretentious. Save room for pie. We were very lucky to get in as we didn't realize the hours (we arrived near closing time)! We were also lucky to see the filming of a Cash & Cars Lotto commercial. The food was excellent - I'm still thinking about it now, 5 days later! I'd had a big breakfast so unfortunately I only had the beef barley soup. I did sample my family's choices of burger (melts in your mouth!), steak sandwich (very tender) and chicken club. The fries were amazing. As a vegetarian, I know how tough it can be in rancher country, so I am always prepared for the fries and salad option...however, I was not prepared for what happened at our first visit to the Chuckwagon. I explained I do not eat any meat or any animal-derived foods and asked for some help with the menu. The waitress suggested a veggie omelette! I explained I don't eat eggs as they come from an animal, and asked if I could have hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast and she said yes. The veggies came up covered in cheese so rather than go through the whole explaining about cheese coming from milk, milk coming from cow deal, I thought I would just eat the hash browns. My first mouthful tasted a little weird and the second confirmed it - the potatoes had been cooked in animal fat. I asked the waitress if this was the case as I thought bacon fat had been used and she laughed and said yes....NOT acceptable. I said 'thank you', put my flatware down and pushed the plate away. She left it there for some 10 minutes before coming back and asking "are you done?" The meal was comped when we went to pay and I explained how upset I felt. I was told that I should have explained properly what I do and don't eat and that people like me make it very difficult for the cooks!! I asked what would have happened if I'd been Jewish and she laughed again!! Unbelievable lack of sensitivity! For me, a disappointing experience. On the plus side, my husband (a Desperate Dan carnivore) said that his Traditional Breakfast was good. read more

First time we came here, they were closing in half an hour so we had to make another trip a second time. Came here with my husband and brother and we ordered the pancake breakfast and two of us tried the burger meal with fries and gravy. The pancakes were quite large and came with maple syrup. The maple syrup was warm but my husband found it very runny like water. I think he was expecting a thicker syrup but there was no other selection on the table and none was offered as choice. It would have been nice to have had strawberry or blueberry syrups. The syrup soaked into the pancake and they got very mushy. The burger and fry meal was quite large and I asked for a side order of gravy. We found the gravy was very very salty. But the burger meal was fine. Our bill came to around sixty five dollars with coffee and pop and I think that is rather expensive for what we had. The waitress was nice but I don't know if I would rush back here anytime soon again. read more

Very disappointed with Chuckwagon Cafe. :( The price was outrageous for the portion that they serve. $15.95 for 7 paper thin strips of steak on a half of a crossant with 9 chunks of potatoe. The hollindaise sauce was nice and the little bit of steak was tasty and potatoes well seasoned. I was wondering if I ordered off of the kids menu by accident or the waitress was playing a joke on me by serving a half order.
