We had a big lunch so we decided to just get one "The Bird" sandwich to take home and share it for supper. Big mistake. Sadness ensued! We hadn't realized what an absolutely amazing sando it was going to be. The soup was delicious but the sandwich was an out of body experience. It left us wanting MOAR. As did the cinnamon bun which came incredibly close to the dough I remember my Grandmother making. I can see we will be driving out to High River again. We will take the littles with us to try that super cool ice cream bar at Evelyn's. read more

Came to High River because I'm a Heartland fan--even knowing Maggie's Diner is a facade. Hadn't heard about Evelyn's but I'm glad we stopped in. Hands-down best sandwich I've had in a long time. Had the Who Knew? with the daily special soup (mushroom barley). Only disappointment was my drink. Ordered a sangria lemonade but they were out, so asked for raspberry lemonade instead. It tasted more cherry and was heavy on the syrup. Daughter had the Close Cut with a Rick's salad for the side (small upcharge). The salad alone was hearty enough for a meal. Sandwich was good, but she said next time she'd order something she couldn't make at home. Decor is fun--and probably would have more meaning for us if we had seen The Last of Us. Definitely recommend a stop--but not if you're in a rush. Enjoy and savor! read more

I had a perfect lunchtime experience here yesterday. The clerk at Olive & Finch (another great High River business) strongly suggested Evelyn's as a great place to grab a bite. From the moment I walked through the door, I was warmly greeted and took a seat at one of the 50s-style diner booths. With helpful assistance from my waiter, I chose wisely. Do not miss the beet salad... I repeat, do not miss the beet salad. Because the main component of my lunch entrée was vegetable, I treated myself to a slice of local Saskatoon, berry pie à la mode (just to keep things in balance). I felt tears welling up as I took the last bite! It took all of my willpower not to lick the plate. I had the opportunity to meet the chef...a delightful woman who brings Evelyn's patrons a lot of joy through her skills in the kitchen. It's probably a good thing that I do not live closer than Seattle...a daily slice of Saskatoon pie à la mode could begin to take a toll pretty quickly. Run...do not walk...to Evelyn's. read more

When we arrived in High River to see some of the Heartland sites, we decided to eat lunch first. We decided to eat at Evelyn's Memory Lane Diner. Interesting interior. They were very busy, proving the lure of the place. My wife had the Hutterite chicken with cranberries sandwich with their beet salad and I had the Triple Delight (swiss, brie and cheddar cheese) with photo chips. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent. read more

Flipping through the channels on the TV in the hotel, I landed on a special (not a commercial) mentioning this place. The sandwiches looked great, the desserts looked great, the whole place looked great. I found it here on Yelp and bookmarked it. The restaurant is a good 50 km south of Calgary, but it's worth it. Especially if you have nothing else to do and don't mind a drive through scenic flat-lands on a highway. Yep, it's a 50's diner. Very small menu of breakfast and lunch items, plus counters loaded in yummy desserts. I had the chicken sandwich, just like it was shown on TV. Fresh chunked up roasted chicken (not that deli-sliced nonsense) with cranberry sauce on a hearty grain bread and sliced in half with a pickle. Excellent. I also had the girls pop a piece of that blackberry pie in a to go box, which I enjoyed later. Yummy, but it would have been better if I'd stayed and had it with a scoop of ice cream. I really hope this place fills up for the lunchtime crowd - this is a small business that deserves to succeed! read more

I wanted to go somewhere a bit different. My friend had been here and said that they had the best ice cream. She had the ham sandwich, which looked great and was a hearty serving. I had the quiche with the beet salad. Our meals arrived in absolute record time, we were both shocked. So delicious. So pleased with my choice. We had to try the ice cream too however there was a huge selection of other sweets too, to entice. It didn't disappoint. Despite the staff being very young, they were all very professional, efficient and it was clear that they were there to work. Kudos to their good service. I will be back as I now need to bring my husband there! read more

Food offerings are great! Good service and friendly informed staff. Lots of seating though it can get busy!

This is the place to eat, as a certified foodie, I can't get enough of the food and desserts. Lunch menu changes to reflect the seasons of foods. Everything made in-house, local ingredients. The owner , a chef for many top resorts now boasts his cooking skills here. In short, you gotta eat here. read more

We turned off the highway to find a spot for lunch and happened on Evelyn's. What a great place! Service was excellent, even better than excellent and so was the food. I had the chicken sandwich and my husband had the Close Cut (ham & cheese) both were full of good stuff surrounded by the best bread baked in-house. Dessert was equally as good, rhubarb strawberry pie that had the flakiest crust, also made in house. If you are in the area, Evelyn's is a must-do. read more

The service was great. Very friendly and prompt. The ambiance of the restaurant is great, so much history. The BLT sandwich was good, a little small, but tasty. The chicken noodle soup was not very good at all. The broth tasted off. Almost like it was made from beef stock not chicken stock. Really not very good at all. Zero stars for the chicken soup. read more

It's an amazing place ice cream is amazing only problem is that it usually closed so I give it a score of 4 stares

That secret you really don't want to share. Most likely one of the best restaurants, I've ever experienced. Every visit and entree is 10 out of 10, each and every time. Everything from ice cream, desserts to the entrees are hand made. That says it all! Don't get me started about the delightful staff that puts up with me and my guests every visit. read more

As a local, I have been here 3 or 4 times. I have always found it to have decent food and decent service. Outstanding deserts. On my most recent visit, it became clear that they were down a waitress. The service was pretty bad. Things happen and I understand. It was the printed pamphlet that really made me shake my head. Unless you can provide flawless service to every single guest, every single time, you have no business schooling paying customers on how to be "proper" guests. I felt very offended and won't be back. read more

Always spot on with the rotating menu and the flavours are always bursting. They cook from the heart. Plus they offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan alternatives. As soon as you walk in the door the hostess/server greets you warmly. There is an option for take-out or dine in at a 50's style restaurant complete with personal juke boxes and a train that navigates its way above you and can be turned on if you ask nicely. I visited over the lunch hour and the atmosphere was charged with happy energy and constant turning of tables. I chose a pot of tea, half Hutterite chicken sandwich and a beet salad. The sandwich was prepared on fresh baked bread (available for purchase) with a light layer of cranberry sauce. The side salad consisted of a healthy portion of homemade pickled beets with carrot and sunflower seeds. A nice balance between sour and crunchy. You need to leave room for dessert as the showcase is full of homemade choices. Cakes, squares, cinnamon buns, pies and crumbles. I settled on a hot piece of strawberry rhubarb crumble pie with whipped cream. Although for some Calgarians this may seem out of the way, the drive is so enjoyable and you'll be glad you took yourself back in time to the way life used to be before fast food. read more

We just happened upon this place and boy am I glad we did. It's a diner. An incredible diner with incredible food and homemade desserts. I had the beet salad and healthy sandwich on multigrain homemade bread. Delish. My colleague had the Reuben sandwich and beef soup. The portions were ample, the ingredients were fresh and amazing. The customer service is bar none. Every guest in the place was happy, you would be too if you had a huge slice of homemade pie a la mode in front of you. Fresh coffee, huge mugs...ice cream at the counter - yes, they have bar stools that spin and make a mean milkshake with one of those green old fashioned machines. Excellent. read more

Went for a drive on a Saturday afternoon because we heard the homemade ice cream was phenomenal, and they didn't disappoint! It was a bit busy due to the lunch crowd, and the seating is first come, first served. However, you can order and eat outside as well (which we chose to do). We ordered the turkey club, and a ham and cheese sandwich. There are no sides, but the sandwiches are a good size and we wanted room for ice cream afterwards. My friend had the ham and cheese, and is traditionally a white bread guy, but he didn't specify he wanted white, so he received multi grain. If the bread was of lesser quality he probably would have had a fit, but he said he thoroughly enjoyed it, best he has ever had! The turkey club was simple and tasty, served on a croissant (which always makes me happy). Now the ice cream, the whole reason we came...amazing! My friend had the Saskatoon berry and I had the Moose Tree (butterscotch and chocolate pieces)! Creamy and smooth consistency. Overall, would return to cafe and try more of the tasty offerings i.e. homemade pie caught my eye :) read more

Folks after looking for a real fifties type diner that woulkd pass on Diners Drive in's and Dives i am proud to announce i have found it. From the time you walk through the door and get greated by the amazing staff who actually have smiles on their faces and are really happy to be there to the very clean and well maintained dining area with the real fifties feel. Homemade baking from pies to the toast. I ordered the bacon and eggs and got a platter full of food for 6.95 after sitting and going through the menu i noticed that nothing was more than 6.95 i was shocked that the prices were so low and the food and restaruant were so good if you really want to take a trip back in time even price wise you have to check this little place out its well worth the trip were going again with the family this time im going to try the homemade stew. read more

The wait staff, owner and atmosphere is great. The food is wonderful too...a bit salty, but it's overall old fashion, home cooking goodness. The desserts are there pride and joy....particularly the ice cream. This place will not disappoint, and in rare fashion, I give it 5 stars and hope it stays open for many years. I wish all recommend food network joints were this good, most are a disappointment, Evelyn's does not disappoint. Eat, laugh, take your time and enjoy these good eats. read more

Top two for lunch in High River. The specials are always good but nothing beats the Hutterite chicken sandwich. Get it with a bowl of the daily soup for a perfect portion. And for dessert, homemade ice cream (any flavor is good). It doesn't get any better. Come early if you want a booth as it tends to get quite busy during the lunch rush (12:00-1:00) but service is quick even when its busy. All the food is fresh and a lot of ingredients are local. Highly recommend trying here. If you don't have time for a full meal just get an ice cream, you wont be disappointed. read more

Drove to High River to try Evelyn's Memory Lane Café due to previous raves about this diner. First time we came, it was not open but it is now open for business. The diner has new owners since the last year or so is what I heard. We ordered banana and peanut butter shake. It was 2 scoops of the flavored ice cream and mixed with milk. It was so runny with mostly milk, we had to send it back to be redone. It did not taste like a shake - not at all thick like it should have been. The peanut butter was actually the flavored chips in the ice cream and did not make the shake taste like peanut butter. They all sank to the bottom of the glass. No real bananas added either - just the scooped ice cream flavor. The chicken club was quite pricey at over $7.00 for a crescent bun with deli chicken slices, tomato, bacon and some yellow cheese. I came with a quarter slice of pickle. For that price , it did not seem worth the value for the food. The pot roast special came in a black bowl that had a big chip in the side.... I think damaged or broken bowls should not be served food in it. I wasn't even sure if it got chipped and may have fallen into my food ! It doesn't make the diner look good to use broken bowls. The pot roast meat was very tender and tasty but I was expecting it to come served like roast beef on a plate with knife and fork. It came like a stew with mashed potatoes and some carrots and celery. It was almost like a stew and served with a spoon. But with one big chunk of meat, you have to chop it with a spoon to eat - and I had to ask for a fork. First time I ever got pot roast to eat with big spoon. The front door was propped open and flies came in and I had to wave them away from my food. Cakes should be stored in the glass case due to the flies coming into the diner. The waitresses were happy to remake our shake and ensure that we had prompt service. read more

We wanted breakfast-y food as we were passing through the little town of High River, and assumed by the name/diner decor it would have said breakfast-y food (eggs, bacon, etc.) but turns out they only sold lunch-y food. That said, it was really good! The soup and sandwiches were fresh, attractive, yummy and very filling. I know we were "supposed" to save room for dessert, but none of us had any space left in our bellies! It was jam packed busy but they squeezed us into one of the few remaining tables. Despite the crowd, the service was quick and friendly. It looks like one of these 50's style diners, but the menu is not at all what you'd expect. We started out slightly disappointed, but after a great meal, we left satisfied! read more
