We were on a motorcycle ride and starving so we stopped here. We had heard a lot about this place and with the line out front I expected it to live up to the reputation. However, it did not. Honestly, this place is just a run down shack and anything you can slap on a grill or drop in a fryer goes on the menu. They are super slow and the food is pretty terrible. I had a open faced burger with chili on it which basically tasted like reheated frozen patties and chili from a can. The only upside is that they don't charge much for this stuff. I've had better food from 7-11. Never again. read more

Came here with a friend to see what all the buzz was about, but the visit was pretty anticlimactic. We ordered cheeseburgers, chili cheese fries, and a hot chocolate. The cheeseburger was fairly cold and flavorless, the chili cheese fries were ok at best, and the hot chocolate tasted like an overpriced Nestle packet. Not to mention, we waited about 20 minutes for our order. The Sanger community seems to love this place, so it's plausible that we caught them on a bad day. read more

This is the absolute best when it comes to there chilli. Chilli dogs, burgers, fries etc. I only wish there hot dogs were Kosher all beef, if it had been, then 5 stars is deserved. Also dont like there's only one of it's kind in the valley, so be prepared to wait in long lines when ordering. read more

I'm not big on chili dogs. But I heard some old-time Sanger folks talking about this place. So one day, my son and I were alone without food. I suggested to my teenage son that we go to Chuck Wagon in Sanger. He rolled his eyes at me, as teenagers do, but since he had no choice but to eat with me or starve to death, he got in the car and we drove down Academy to Sanger and then to Chuck Wagon. It was cold and windy outside. I left the comfortable confines of my car and approached the window to place my order. I ordered two chili dogs and two fries. After what seemed like a decade in the cold wind, I got my food and went to my car where my warm teenager was comfortably listening to something he calls "music." I asked him to hold the food while I drove home. Then things got ugly. He took a fry out of the bag and ate it. "Dad - this is a good fry! You want one?" So he gave me one. Damn! It was hot and good! I warned my teenager to keep his paws off the fries. He didn't listen. He started sneaking the fries out of the bag and scarfing them down. Every time I tried to stop the stealing, he moved the bag and threatened to call CPS for endangering the life of a child while I was driving! By the time we got home, my darling son had eaten a whole bag of fries! There were some left and I ate them and they were great. They're crinkle cut fries, but nevertheless, they are damn good! The chili dogs were good, too. The chlii was very good. I'm definitely going back, but my son is not. I love the Chuck Wagon!! read more

For years, I'd driven by this unassuming little take-out joint, invariably heading somewhere else. Despite occasional stories about the near-mythical chili served up here, I'd never passed by at an hour later, or early enough to see what it was all about. Until today, and I wish I hadn't. Of course this place is a dive, as it sits on the street corner, little larger than a few phone booths welded together, with a couple of picnic tables to one side. Graffiti liberally adorns one side of the building, but in an almost endearing fashion, as is the case with the ancient garage behind the restaurant. The paint peels as you gaze across the fading menu board. Yet, as we rolled up the parking lot was full, and a gaggle of folks awaited their orders. For anything in a town this small to be this busy, it has to be good, right? Two chili-cheese dogs and an order of chili-cheese fries later, we found this basic assumption to be wholly violated. Problems ensued as we found our order to have been flubbed, and mustard where it shouldn't have been. As we dove in, we found a hot dog that would not have been out of place in a Wal-Mart clearence aisle, with an equally unappetizing bun. The cheese bore an unusual funky flavor. The much heralded chili was acceptable, but no more, and lacking in heat to boot. The fries? Can you say Ore-Ida? The only thing mythical about this meal was how anyone could get away with charging $4 an item for it. I'm not sure why or how this little roadside wonder came to have the reputation for magical food it enjoys in the greater Fresno area. Certainly, many people really like it. Buy you could say the same thing about McDonald's, or Taco Bell (two places I have not eaten at in over a decade), but that doesn't mean the food is good, or even worthwhile. I came expecting understated greatness, I left laughing at the concept that anyone could ever imagine that this place served good food. If it ever did, that era is long since gone. I'd rather chuck than ride this wagon again. read more

I love the move that people 'watching their diet' do, where they're like: "Well -- I didn't eat absolutely anything ALL day because I was so busy with work. So, fuck it, I'm gonna order a double cheeseburger and fries with a soda." You have to love that justification and psychology that us humans use to validate food that is as bad for you as the infamous Chuck Wagon. And this is exactly what I told myself today. Sigh. Coming here several times too many (I happen to have work in town this week), I feel confident that this place is a solid 3.5, but nothing more, honestly. That's not a bad thing at all, but I just don't see how it can ever be a 4+, let alone a 5 rating. Based on that, I ordered the aforementioned double cheeseburger, large fries and soda -- it was diet though. I like that move also: "Yeaaah.... I'd like to order a meal with at least a 1,000 calories, but i'll be goddamned if my soda has real sugar." We all can be guilty of ordering like this now and again. Overall, I never feel 'great' after eating food like this (who does). Chuck Wagon is that type of terrible junk food where it's great while your eating it, but by the time you're done and just realize what you ate, and you start doin' the justification-math in your head where you're like: "Okay... well, If I spend an extra hour at the gym tonight -- or actually, if i just go on the weekend, but take Friday as my off day... hmmm..." Yeah, when you start to do those circles in your head, that's never a good thing. Chuck Wagon makes me feel like this every time, yet i still come here every now and then. This is just what Chuck Wagon is though. That nasty habit that you know is no good for you, yet you can't help from letting yourself fall victim to its wrath. It's even positioned prominently on the street corner like a crack-dealer that set up shop. Solid 3.5 -- much more than a 3 rating, but easily falling shy of a 4 -- in my opinion at least. read more

If you're looking for a locally-owned Fosters Freeze sort of place to eat, this is the place you want to go! The food is decent, the prices are okay. I will definitely return the next time I'm in Sanger. BTW: There's no indoor seating. They do have picnic tables with a covered patio and offer take-out. Oh Chuck Wagon! I remember the first time I went to Sanger with my boyfriend (who later became my husband). It was 2003, I was with a group of friends who were visiting the boyfriend's family in a little town I had never heard of before called Sanger. After indulging in a little too much of the liquid libation over the weekend, it was suggested or rather demanded that we go to Chuck Wagon. "What is Chuck Wagon I asked?" It was like I said a blasphemy. All of the sudden I was in the middle of a furry of shouts. "It's only the best!" "You've never tried it?" "The chili is so good" "Oh my God,' we have to go! And so we went and yes, this hole in the wall can serve up an artery clogging good time! Now a days, it is impossible to make the trek to Sanger and not visit Chuck Wagon. It's become a tradition and our friends who like to tag along on occascional visits also require a visit. It's just expected. I am only glad I don't live in Sanger or I am pretty sure my waistline would explode!! Once again we stopped for some grub on the way out of town yesterday. Typically, I am not much of a chili girl but I accidentally ordered a Clark Burger with chili on it and at first I was a bit bummed. But after taking a bite I was pleasantly surprised at the yumminess and how it made the burger better! I know, I know, they are known for the good chili but alas I have always liked my burgers somewhat plain. Besides tasty burgers, Chuck Wagon offers up a variety of options, everything from fish sandwiches to hot dogs to burritos. There are so many choices it's hard to pick which item to get!! And don't worry you can put chili on about everything you order!!! Drink wise they have everything from shakes to sodas that you can add a shot of vanilla too. Need sides? How about fried mushrooms, frito pie (chili over a bag of fritos) or salty french fries? There is seriously a lot of choices. One tip on the fries though. Get one bag per two people as the serving is quite large (me likey). So if you are ever in the Sanger area, you gotta grub up at Chuck Wagon. read more

Somewhat famous chili shack and almost the only thing I know about Sanger. This appears to be any other burger stand, and even offers a lot of the same foods from whatever that burger joint food supplier must be. Even those delicious boiling-hot battered fried mushrooms are exactly the same. The difference here is that you get CHILI on everything. And it's really fat, meaty chili, too. So you can't really lose. The only way you can lose is if you go overboard, which is easy to do. Just like drinking way too much peppermint schnapps and jagermeister on your 21st birthday, it's easy to order three frito pies, a chili dog and a chili burger and not realize what you've done until it's too late. Last time we all went it was bad news. Frito pies (fun size bags of Fritos filled with chili) are delicious on some kind of morbid sodium-nightmare level, but you do not need more than one. It's probably best to share one, actually. i actually prefer to get a chili dog without the actual hot dog. All that other stuff just gets in the way of the chili! But I'm all about chili cheese fries. This is obviously comfort food and probably not a good idea to eat often, but for what it does, I think it does it well. I used to go there years ago, back in 94-95 and it was delicious. Went recently 4/16/16 and it was bland. Chili dog was just ok, the weiner was just below warm and the chili was worse than Hormel. Cheeseburger was not good, Wendy's cheeseburgers are much tastier. Save your money. read more

A good dive not something u can eat every day but for me once a month, I had almost everything on the menu and it's all nasty good :) oily greatness and the world famous chili cheese fries!!! What can be said that has not been said millions of times before? An "institution" restaurant if there ever was one. Take Chuck Wagon out of Sanger, and Sanger isn't Sanger anymore. A quintessential small-town burger/hot dog stand that simply must always exist. The chili dog is in the same ballpark as Pink's in Los Angeles and the chili is of that same consistency--thin, amply seasoned, and perfectly suited for topping a mustard dog. It is delicious. The rest of the food is forgettable, save for the two things you should always get with a chili dog: fries and a chocolate shake. The only downside? Whatever food you order will either be in your arteries forever or will be out of your body within 20 minutes. Also, if it's your first visit, please pardon the ghetto appearance. Best place to go for anything Chili! I recommend the double Chili Cheese Clark burger with the Chili Cheese Fries if you're not a fan of lettuce or onions then order it plain. So me and a co-worker went here for a late lunch.... I had heard of this place, but never been. I gotta say, I got a chili cheese dog with onions, and it was so good. Nice long quality hotdog (no mystery chunks) and great chili. The chili has a unique flavor, that I can only describe as "extra chili flavor". No beans, witch is great on chili dogs, and I also had a few onion rings, and they were fantastic. Don't get me wrong, it's a hole in the wall, junk food place. But it's some of the best junk food I've had in a long long time. My co-worker thought the chili cheese burger was great too! So we got a chilli cheese dog with onions, a chili cheese burger, onion rings, and 2 large sodas, and it was 14$ total. Not bad if you ask me. Homemade goodness. read more

Drove a long way out of my way to finally try this place out and I was a bit disappointed. The 'thing' to order here is Chili Dogs, that's what they are famous for. The Chili isn't bad, a little thin but taste is good. It's the quality of the hot dog that is sad, these are low quality hot dogs for what you are paying for, but they are long. Also I ordered onion rings with my order and these were like any frozen onion ring you'd buy in the super market and deep fry or bake yourself at home. I'd give it 5 stars but it's just too much of a single note player, although it's a very good note. I've been here many times and I have to say stick with their core product, chilli dogs. Their menu reads a bit like a Costco freezer section and their hamburgers are ok, but the meat is defiantly frozen. I've read some reviews stating the chilli isn't as good as the hype, but I disagree because this chilli is for topping things. I wouldn't enter this into a stand alone chilli contest, but for topping a dog or burger it's perfect. The chili dogs are delicious! I usually get a chili dog with everything and the FRIED MUSHROOMS (which are super amazing). It's not too expensive here, I'd say most menu items are decently priced. There is only outdoor seating, no restrooms. This place looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid and when my mom was a kid! I have fond memories of coming here during the summer with my grandpa and cousins. It's a classic place to get chili dogs! They have the good ice also, which in my opinion somehow makes drinks taste better haha. My wife and I have been trying to get to the Chuck Wagon for a couple of years. It's a walk up Mom and Pop place that you stop in at when your in the neighborhood. She learned of it by word of mouth while flying home. A fellow passenger told her about the wonderful chili dogs. Our first attempt was a wash because the restaurant is closed on Wednesday. But this last Thursday we found ourselves in Sanger and hungry. The chili dogs are a foot long of goodness. I'm a big guy and a big eater - two were enough. A walk up to the window, order, pay and within 10 minutes we were sitting in our car munching down. If you like grub on the go you'll like this place. One word of advice....Grab a bunch of napkins, or better yet, bring a towel. My shirt looked like I ran a mud run. But it was worth every splat!
