Wagyu
Moises T.

Chubby Skewers was an incredible experience. The place was packed when we went, and there are no reservations, so we put our name down and wait for a table. The place is full of energy. Every table has its own little skewer grill, so I could smell the meat cooking all around me. The staff were super nice and helpful, especially when we were trying to figure out what to get. I actually walk to the back and pick out all the meats myself. And when I say there are a lot of choices, there are A LOT. I brought everything back to my table and grilled it exactly how I wanted. I honestly had way too much fun with it. My favorites were the Wagyu, brisket, neck, lean meat, and Wagyu tongue. But once I got into the Wagyu, that's pretty much all I wanted. The meat was incredibly tender, with this rich beef flavor that got even better from the grill. The fat would start to soften and almost melt as it cooked, giving the meat a buttery texture and making every bite incredibly moist. The brisket had a deeper flavor, while the neck had a little more chew and a really satisfying beefy taste. The Wagyu tongue was surprisingly tender. Every piece tasted different, and that's what made it so fun. Great food, great energy, and definitely an experience by itself.

If you're planning to go on the weekend, I'd recommend getting there at least 15 minutes before they open--otherwise, be prepared to wait! Each skewer is $1.30, so it's an easy spot to try a little bit of everything. Out of all the skewers we got, the Black Pepper Wagyu was definitely the standout. Service was great too! Everyone was attentive and checked on us throughout the meal. The Scallop Vermicelli came out surprisingly fast. The spice had a nice kick, but the noodles and scallop balanced it out really well. Definitely a dish I'd order again! Overall, a fun spot for skewers, especially if you like trying a little bit of everything.

Everything was delicious!

$1.30/skewer?!?! WHAT A STEAL! I have never heard of this company until my friend kept raving about it so onto my itinerary it goes! It gets super busy (for good reason) so best to come early to put your name down so that you can explore Chinatown as well. Dress lightly because they have no AC and the open grills just add to the heat. You order all the sides and drinks on your phone and you grab the skewers from the fridge. They have so many that I couldn't rememeber what I ate. It would be cool if there was a way to label the skewer itself so you can see after you're done cooking it. A tip when cooking is to not cook it for too long or it makes it harder to remove it from the stick The skewers aren't the biggest so it can definitely add up but I honestly felt like it's worth it for the quality and it's such a fun experience! A cool plus is that if you have their paid membership, the skewers come out to $1 instead! I wish we had someting like this back home but for now, it shall be on my travel itineraries

I enjoyed the skewers. The wagyu skewers were rich, heart not very gamey, a nice selection of drinks, and the was a good variety of options. Everything was convenient: spices, water, etc. And not too expensive. Service was good, they explained how it works and let us sit down immediately. The kitchen closed so we could not order any non skewer items, as it was pretty late. The decor is cute, with lots of neon signs with pins and fun messages and lucky cats. But the tables were very cramped and low, I could barely fit my legs in front of the low chairs. The fires are towards the edges of the cooking area, so skewers didn't cook very evenly. Overall I enjoyed it and would come again if I lived here.

Dumplings and cold noods

Walk in wait on a Friday night was almost 2 hrs. But it was worth it because it's such a fun dinning experience. All the servers were super nice and my cousin made them take shots with us which was hilarious but I hope they don't feel pressured my favs were the unagi, chicken heart, and the variations of wagyu/beef skewers. I also really enjoyed their dumpling soup and cold noodle - the contrast with the skewers was perfect. There are full size (regular tables) but they also have low-tables. So if you have bad knees - make sure you get a normal table. The vibes are very Chinese. Super cute. Id come back here if I'm in the area.

We love Chubby Skewers. & when I mean we, I really meant my daughter. Eating on a stick is just that more fun and enjoyable I guess. First time we had carryout and it was major HIT for everyone because 1. we didnt have to worry about cooking 2. it was already grilled to perfection The second time we dined in and didn't have the same great experience because our grill was uneven so it made the food cook unevenly where one side was more burnt and it's rough cooking with a toddler. All in all we really love this place and have gotten to do again even after a not so fun experience dining in. You can check in if you're nearby so def expect a wait for this joint.

I've been dying to try Chubby Skewers since they opened, but traffic to Chinatown is usually brutal--so I decided to save it for my birthday dinner! We went on a Tuesday right at 5:30 PM and walked right in, which was perfect because the crowd started picking up around 6. The whole setup is so fun! You grill the skewers right at your table, and at $1.30 each, you can try everything. Do not skip the pork belly, tenderloin, wagyu, or peppered wagyu--they were absolute standouts! Huge shoutout to our server, Eli, who made my birthday extra special. He was super attentive, kept our table tidy, and even played a fun guessing game with us at the end for how many skewers we ate. We actually beat him, so he hooked us up with 5 free skewers! Such a unique, fun experience. I'll definitely be back!

Amazing price and the membership is so worth it ! I love the wagu beef and pork belly. If you go make sure to wear layers because it can get really hot with all the grills.

Upon entering there are low sitting, Asian street food style table layouts and $1.3 skewers are all self serve. Table service is mainly for ordering drinks since there is a QR code for menu items. Our server Nathan was very pleasant and attentive!! I would say that we ate enjoyably within a $30-40/p budget. My main critiques for chubby skewers would be the long wait times, inconvenient table heights for taller guests, and doubling up skewers on some meats/seafoods without reflecting the portion size.

Ariel H.

Really fun experience, add yourself to the Yelp waitlist ahead to save yourself some time. The tables ARE short so beware, it's to emulate the street side experience! Really appreciate the friendly staff here, and they don't fill the restaurant so you don't feel super crammed. We love all the beef and lamb options! Could get expensive though we spent around $40-50 pp. if you come more than 2 times a year consider getting their membership!

Kenny N.

Came here on a Sunday evening. Join the waitlisting and it stated about an hour to an hour and a half. Sadly it was much longer than that. There is a yelp waitlist that you join. The restaurant itself is designed to be very packed and street-like. The table is low and the sitting is also low to the ground. Also note if you have a large party more than 4, try to get there early as this restaurant is not designed to support only 4 people. Also I am starting to notice a trend at most Chubby locations, small tables, small grill or not enough of it, and packing people in like cattle. It seems like they are trying to get you out of there as fast as possible. Either way back to the restaurant. You get one grill no matter how big your party is, there is a table free and a seasoning fee which they don't tell you about so be prepared to account for that. All the skewers are in the back in the fridge, lucky they are labeled with what is in each fridge. I would still go for the beef and pork as the skewers for like the chicken skin and veggies aren't skewered correctly so it is hard to cook them as you can rotate them to cook on all sides - basically one side is heavy and it just keeps spinning unless one person wants to hold it in place. They have some seasoning at your table and there is a little bit more in the back near the skewers. You can also order additional items via QR code, which this team isn't too familiar with at the moment. When I scanned the QR code, there were items "ordered" already for my table which we didn't order and according to the waitress, it was not appearing on her side. After multiple closing and re-scanning of the QR code it finally started working correctly. Skewers are about $1.30 each unless you have a membership which then drops it down to $1.00 only after spending $50 dollars and it also covers your table fee and seasoning fee. Cooking the skewers can take a bit depending on your burner, hopefully it isn't hotter on one side than the other like mine. But you will probably need to move things around once you get used to it. Tip is to put a set of skewers on the top rack to get it somewhat pre-cooked and then bring it down to char the outside of it. This will speed up the cooking of your skewers.

Susan W.

Shoutout to Emily for an exceptional level of service during our meal. We waited about 45-50 minutes for our table for 4 and then dove right in. It's a fun experience and something to do occasionally. I think we would rather not cook most of our meal, but we would do it with friends again. The beef was great as was the pork. Most of the chicken and seafood was just okay. We ordered a few things from the kitchen and they were okay also. It's currently BYOB. The chairs are low, but they do have backs. The real estate on the table is pretty cramped, but they do clear space quickly. We may be back, but we probably won't rush.

This was such a fun experience!! Perfect spot to go with friends and grill together!! The skewers are honestly on the smaller end, and at $1.30 per skewer (with some items having two skewers inside it so $2.60), it does add up fast. The two of us ended up with 40 skewers. There's a few large fridges with a huge selection of skewers, and you just go up to grab them yourself! At the grill, bottom rack is for meats, top rack is for veggies. The Wagyu beef pieces were delicious, but stand outs were the New Orleans chicken, the Chinese broccoli, and the corn!! There's a 0.99 fee for spices and seasonings, but the spice blends were genuinely so so so addicting and it was not spicy at all. We also got the s'mores at the end and I loved how it was nontraditional! You get the marshmellows, then chocolate sauce, then graham cracker crumbs. This was delish! Our server Nathan was super nice and taught us all the basics!

A cobblestone walkway with a rustic feel to it. It's also a Ramen & coffee spot on the premises. But we were there for the BBQ! We got there right around opening time so the line hadn't formed yet. The gentleman that cut our meats was very inviting and so nice! He definitely gets a 10/10 for service! We ordered just about everything except the pulled pork. We ordered 1/2 lb. of Brisket, 1/2 lb. of Pastrami, 1/2 lb. of the Pork Ribs, 1/2 lb. of Smoked Turkey, A Cheddar Jalapeno Hot Link, 1 1/2 Beef Rib, Chicago Twinke, Coke Zero and I went back and got 1/2 lb. Pork Belly! They give you complementary bread & pickled onions. I spent a total of $243.08 tip included. (I always tip good for good food and service). Tipping is optional though. I'm going to start with the Pastrami. It was tender, very, very well seasoned, Smokey, rich and absolutely delicious!!! 10/10! The sliced Brisket was also very, very well seasoned, tender & Smokey! Another 10/10!! The pork Ribs were once again seasoned well, not fall of the bone tender but they were tender how a rib should be! Nice glaze of sauce on them I'd say a 9.6/10. The smoked turkey is the best I've ever had ANYWHERE!! Moist, tender, seasoned and Smokey! 10/10! The pork belly was lean, fatty, rich, seasoned, tender just sinfully delicious!! 10/10. The cheddar Jalapeño hot link was juicy, smoked, had a nice snap, very flavorful and not too spicy. Just enough heat nothing overpowering. And it was a nice size sausage (pause). 9.7/10. The Chicago Twinkie is a Jalapeño stuff with cheese and wrapped in bacon! Smoked to perfection! Also deliciously sinful! 10/10!! The beef rib was so tender, nicely smoked, rich, well seasoned, it was fatty and lean. My gosh! So freaking good!! 10/10. We didn't order any sides we were there strictly for the smoked meat and this place did not disappoint! I can't wait until my next visit there! Next time I'll try a beer to go with it to help cut through the richness of the meat. If you haven't already been here, treat yourself to some delicious BBQ! All in all They get a solid 9.9/10!! When I visited, the line was extremely long, but it moved surprisingly quickly. The restaurant has a cafeteria-style setup where you order at the counter and receive your food there. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the expectations I had going in. I spent around $80 on turkey, brisket, sausage, potatoes, beans, and hot sauce, which felt expensive for what I received. The turkey was dry, while the brisket was decent and had a nice peppery flavor. The sausage was bland, and the sides were just okay. Overall, I didn't have a bad experience, but I also didn't feel the food justified the price or the hype. There are plenty of other places I'd choose before coming back here.

It won't knock your socks off, but it is nowhere close to "bad." It's perfect for what it is, that being: a spot for a bite during the lunch hour. On both visits, I ordered the two meat platter, with brisket and sausage. Both were flavorful and savory, with the brisket being balanced in terms of meaty vs fatty (as requested). Now, that said, the prices at Blackwood are on the high side. On the one hand, I know the price of a pound of ground beef is greater than the minimum wage (as of this writing). However, I also can't help but feel the punch to the wallet when two meats and one side, where one of those is brisket, and a soda comes to somewhere between $20-25 (I think it's close to $25, but don't want to misspeak). Half a pound of meat is not a lot, making the wallet punch even worse. Then there comes the service. Most of the folks working here are professional and welcome. There is this one person, though, whose level of gruffness seems a bit high. It wasn't so much a lack of pleasantries for the sake of efficiency as it was annoyance that customers exist? Final verdict: If you're working in the loop, and craving BBQ, Blackwood is a rock-solid spot, but the high prices mean it likely isn't practical for a regular spot. If it's a weekend, there are better options out there.

"Oh my God!" was my initial response after my first forkful, which was lightly seasoned with a delightful taste. I must say it was the perfect side for the vegan sloppy joe. After my last bites, I had the slightest grin on my face, and the only thing on my mind was that I will definitely have it again in the future. The sprecher soda - cherry cola was the perfect complement to my meal. I have been dining at Carson's restaurant for over 30 years, but after my experience last night, I…read morewill be looking for a new barbecue spot. Up until four years ago, I used to visit at least five or six times every single year. Last night was my first time back since then, and I was deeply disappointed by how much the standards have slipped. The entire evening felt incredibly rushed. The person taking our order seemed to be in a massive hurry, acting short and dismissive with us. To make matters worse, an automatic gratuity was added to the bill. While I understand this is becoming a common industry practice, a gratuity should ultimately be an option based on service. The server did mention at the end that we could have it removed if we wanted to, but customers shouldn't be forced into that awkward position in the first place. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has also gone downhill. I always used to order the ribs and frequently took extra food home because it was so good. Last night, the food left a lot to be desired. The barbecue simply isn't what it once was. When my uncle graduated in the 90s we went to your previous downtown location. He loved the restaurant as well; the food, the exceptional service, and the warm atmosphere. I went there year after year. While I respect that they have managed to stay in business for 30 years, there were just too many issues with both the service and the food for me to return.
