Even on a Sunday before lunch, the place is extremely spacious, clean, well organized/stocked, and the staff are friendly but not pushy. I am no green thumb but an amateur indoor plant enthusiast à la covid shelter in place so I'll definitely be back for succulents and or air plants when I'm ready to get back into the game. There's a huge selection of trees, plants, shrubs, herbs, flowers and everything in between. I didn't realize that they offer fresh cut Christmas trees during the winter season. But I would definitely like to come back to see and smell them. They also sell fertilizer, sprinkler system spare parts, grills, and patio furniture and accessories. It's a haven for anyone working on their yard or outdoor space. There's even dog treats and toys, wind chimes, bird houses and feeders! As wonderful as this place is, you wouldn't expect such fair prices. But here they are, competitively reasonable. As an indoor plant person, I appreciate the various sizes of neem oil and fair pricing! Lastly, and most importantly, we weren't sure if we could bring our pup in but there were tons of large dogs on leash! So glad this place is so close to home! We'll be back soon.

I suspect the feeling is that once the lights fail, you'll be forced to buy a new one far more frequently than every other decade. Well, I found one on Amazon from Balsam Hill, one of the myriad brands of North Pole forestry from Beijing's PolyCorp Group who has a stranglehold on three quarters of the plastic pines sold in the US. Yes, nothing speaks to the solemnity of Christmas quite like a tree from the PRC. Whatever the origin, I sure like snapping the thing together in five minutes as opposed to building the fake Balsam one branch at a time. And if the lights go out, just pop in a new set. No more frustration from the Island of Misfit Trees. Three stars for those busy little elves from the PolyCorp Group.

For the price, I expected far better durability and support. Instead, Balsam Hill offered nothing but "troubleshooting," which felt insulting given the obvious product failure. Trying to resolve the issue was exhausting. I spoke with three separate online chat reps. Two simply stopped responding, and the third told me they couldn't help because the wreaths were past the 30-day warranty. My first phone call ended with a promise that "the back office" would review my case and get back to me, but no one ever followed up. When I finally spoke with a supervisor, they just repeated the 30-day warranty policy and refused to offer any meaningful assistance. For a company that advertises premium quality, both the product and the customer service were a letdown. I won't be purchasing from Balsam Hill again.

While this place has gotten better in selection and value with its new ownership, my experience has been that it has gone down the toilet in customer service, at least at the register. I have shopped here for years and never had a problem with anyone, was always impressed by the selection and even the value. But one bad experience can change the whole impression of a place and and destroy years of reputation building in a consumer's mind. So here is what happened. Two visits ago we were hounded by them to join their loyalty program and while I hate the spam that usually comes along with joining those things, we went ahead and joined as it seemed important to the business. This time when we came, my wife forgot and did not tell them we were members when she approached the register. UNLIKE THEIR COMPETITORS, THEY DID NOT ASK IF WE WERE MEMBERS. After the transaction, my wife remembered and informed the person at the register (who I believe is one of the owners) that she was a member and got a truly shockingly bad response from a customer relations perspective. She was told that it was too late, and that it was her responsibility to tell them before the transaction and that they could not add the purchase points to the membership. To be clear, while not getting the points is part of it, the biggest part of it was the attitude with which this was put back on us. Seems like a little thing I know, but it's the little things become big things that affect whether I ever want to return to a place that we literally have spent thousands of dollars at in the past.

There was not as big of a selection of herbs as I would have liked but they have a house plant area that has some beautiful variations of begonias, pothos, and so many other variety of plants. If you are in the Richardson area you must certainly pop in and see what you can find to add life and color to your home.

With all of the amazing restaurants in town, I find little time or even desire to cook at home, but…read moreI was lured by the idea of creating my own Moroccan masterpiece through the guidance of Kitchenware on the Square's Thursday night cooking class. They posted a tantalizing menu on a Facebook event that had me looking for a way to sign up. Unfortunately there was no way to register for the class online through their website. Matter of fact, the website didn't provide any information about the class. I called the store phone number during business hours several times, but no one answered. Finally I left a Facebook message, and someone eventually replied and asked me to email to sign up. I would highly recommend the store find a way to streamline this process. There are so many online ticketing companies out there that will allow people to sign up and prepay for the event. A customer should never have to work so hard to register. My persistence was due to the tasty and possibly tricky-to-make menu items posted. There was the promise of vegetable samosas with a cucumber sauce and chicken tagine. Unfortunately we didn't get to make the samosas. They had already wrapped the cooked vegetables in phyllo dough and baked them. We got to make the cucumber sauce that topped the samosa and eat the savory creation, but I was disappointed that we didn't get a chance to make this staple appetizer. Our class of eight each had their own cooking station with a cutting board, knife, spatula, ramekins, pre-measured ingredients, cooktop, etc. Aprons were provided so that we would go home with food in our belly as opposed to on it. This was a hands on class where we were able to cut, chop, mix and stir. We were also offered a glass of merlot and a hot toddy to savor during the class. Sadly there was no tagine pot. This was another letdown. I had really hoped we would learn to cook with a tagine. They had one on display. Apparently the owner had ordered them, but they didn't arrive in time. Despite this, the final result was delicious. I devoured every last morsel of my chicken curry poured over rice with a side of wheat pita bread. Dessert was a light, healthy mix of orange slices and dates. The best parts of the class were: 1) Having our own work stations where we could get our hands dirty 2) Being able to drink wine during the evening 3) Asking questions of our chefs who gave us several tidbits we could use to entertain our friends and family later 4) Eating our masterpiece at the conclusion of the class without having to do the cleanup! Would I take another class here? Maybe, but unlikely. The price was steep ($69) per person. For people who already have a little bit of know-how in the kitchen, this class would have been a snoozer, but for those foraging into this area for the first time, the hand holding through the class is definitely a way to build ones cooking confidence.
