I agree with the 10/24/13 review. Things have definitely changed. My husband and I have been patrons for many years and stopped in to wish a happy bday to our favorite server. Upon inquiry about why she hasn't been there the past few times, we were told that after 5+ years she decided to "moved on". My husband and I were both shocked. Heather was very personable and a true delight. She knew just about every customer and seemed to truly enjoy her job. She was certainly one of the main reasons we patronized Chris'. As far as the food goes, it is tasty but not enough to warrant ever dining in the dingy, dank dining room again. From here on out we will do carry-out. Heather, you are truly missed. read more

This used to be my favorite casual restaurant here in Annapolis. It was our standard "go to" place when I didn't want to cook. Not so anymore. Yes, it's just kind ok now. The moussaka used to be so delicious and light -- very unusual Cretan spin on the heavier Greek version. Now it's the bland and boring not special brick in stomach version. They used to make a chicken souvlaki sandwich and salad. Today I ordered the chicken souvlaki over salad and no longer is it nice chunks of chicken breast, it's thin sliced white mystery meat. I presume there's chicken in it. Skip it, it's not what it used to be unless you want pizza, which is still quite delicious. read more

This is a family place that offers dining in and take-out. I am full Greek and this is the closest you can get to home cooking while going out. In fact I'll even say that this is home cooking. The atmosphere is not fancy but it is so authentic that I have actually taken a lunch date here. I was disappointed after reading the reviews, my experience was very mediocre. The staff was very nice, but the food was only so-so. The biggest crime was bland tzatziki sauce. The meat on the gyro was flavorful, but dry. The oil for the fryers needed to be changed, my fries were on the edge of gross. I feel like this place probably was great at one point, and it was definitely crowded for the time of day I was there (mid afternoon), but I have had better Greek at several places in the area. Best takeout in Annapolis. Really the only consistent place I can rely on. The charbroiled chicken salad is my go to healthy option for dinner. However, the athenian delight is another staple in our house. We order here at least once a week. Since the Parthenon closed this is Annapolis's only destination for greek food and it does not disappoint. read more

We we're disappointed. The Gyro platter is $16.95 and comes with a gyro, Greek salad and fries. For $11.90 you can get the same thing without the Greek salad. My fries tasted like they had been re-dunked throughout the day in grease to be reheated and served and they were awful. The last thing that irritated us was that you must tip in cash, they conveniently have an ATM which charges you $2.50 to get cash. That was our last time eating there. read more

Chris's Charcoal Pit House is a bit of an Annapolis institution. It has been in the same location for years and for lack of better words, it looks really rundown. Walking inside is like going into a time warp as the place has not been updated in decades. As they say, don't let appearances fool you. The food is delicious. My favorite menu item is their pit beef sandwich with a side of fries. It is technically a Greek restaurant, but they also have lots of American food, pit beef included. You can get a little bit of everything at Chris's and it is all delicious. The service can be compared to diner service. You're very likely to have the older lady type who has smoked one too many cigarettes in her life wait on your. She'll be pleasant and she'll make sure you have a great experience. Although I have not had them, I've heard that you'll be hard pressed to find a better gyro in the area. The only warning I have is that they do not accept credit cards. They are kind enough to put an ATM by the register but lets face it, they're hoping to get the fee for withdrawing cash. Bring cash to avoid the ATM fee. read more

Our Suitland Ladies Lunch a group of friends from High School days met this past Saturday to enjoy a casual lunch. The lovely waitress Kristina warmly greeted everyone. She arranged seating so we had a casual comfortable atmosphere. Kristina was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu has many selections serving Mediterranean fare that is cooked on a charcoal grill. I enjoyed the Gyro. It was flavorful with a delicious cucumber sauce. Chris' Charcoal Pit has been in business for over 35 years. It is conveniently located on west street in Annapolis. Everyone enjoyed the lunch and warm atmosphere. read more

I wish I could rave about this mildly charming local place, but I can't. The food was mediocre and the service was average, nothing really fun about this place. We both got platters, more expensive than a gyro sandwich and maybe that was the problem, the mixed meat platter with sadzich and the moussaka with salad were BORING. We even got the side order of "special" green beans and they were tasteless, too. We hit the salt shaker and tried to make the best of it, but we wont go back. Ordered a gyro and couldn't pick up my order. They call me two days later and tell me there going to report my number to the police because "this isn't a joke". Well I work in the service industry and this has never been a thing. Nothing is a joke. Something that was out of my hands came up and I was unable to pick up my order which was UNDER $30. Never ordering here again only due to customer service. There are ways to address things and this was not the appropriate way. read more

Best "hole in the wall" I could have stumbled upon. After dropping my car off at a shop down the street I took my two littles out for a stroll hoping to stumble upon something at least a step up from a fast food joint. Ran into Chris's and HOLY COW were we in for a pleasant surprise. Ordered the $17 appetizer sampler item (can't remember the exact name) and the server (who was absolutely DARLING) brought out 3 plates of food! The first had sliced pita breaf, a cup of tzatziki (delish), and a delightful creamy fish egg spread. The 2nd plate was filled with a generous serving of sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, kamalata olives (pit in), and cubed feta cheese. The 3rd, and final plate had 2 HUGE dolmas and was piled with lamb/beef as well as chicken gyro meat! Needless to say there was plenty of food for the 3 of us and copious leftovers to take home to Dad. I'm a "hole in the wall" kinda gal; so, froo-froo decor is not a big point for me- if youre looking for a lavishly decorated interior this may not be the spot. However, if you're looking for a clean place that offers tantalizing Mediterranean food at fair prices and served with kindness, this is your place. Will be back again! read more

I came here with my husband for lunch and had an all-around good experience. We both had ordered the Achille's Heel Souvlake and shared a piece of baklava. The souvlaki was mostly good--the chunks of pork on it were a little too big and too chewy for our tastes, but the tzatziki sauce and feta still gave it a lot of good flavor. The baklava tasted great. Our food came out in a timely manner and our server was really nice. If I happened to be out here again with a craving for Greek food, I'd try coming here again. read more

Best gyros in Annapolis, hands down.......lamb or chicken, its all good NY style pizza is also very very good, as are the greek dishes. Friendly staff, family run operation. They make you feel like your at a friends house. Prices are moderate but fair for the quality and portions you receive. The food is consistantly good. My husband took me to this place for my birthday as we had heard it was good from a cashier at a nearby supermarket. We loved it! The location isn't very appealing and the restaurant itself isn't fancy but it is charming and warm. The food was delicious and quantities were generous. I have been to Chris's several times. It is pretty good Greek food for Annapolis. The hummus is one of the better ones in Maryland. There is something about their pita bread, however, that just doesn't sit right with me. It isn't horrible, but the texture and flavor seem off to what I am used to. Still, ever since I left Michigan I have had trouble finding good hummus and this is pretty decent. For the entree, I usually get the Athenian. Which is marinated and grilled chicken chunks on a pita with onions, lettuce, tomato and tzatziki sauce. The tzatziki sauce is excellent here. Again, the problem comes down to the pita. It gets soggy really quick and just isn't what it should be. The ingredients for the greek salad are always fresh and crisp. No wilted lettuce or soggy onions here. I tried the baklava once and it just seemed old and soggy. Just not a very good pastry in my opinion. I generally love baklava. Another annoying thing is the place does not accept credit or debit cards. Some people may see this as a quaint throwback to simpler times. I find it to be about as quaint a throw back to simpler times as I would if they still had slaves working in the kitchen. It is almost 2010 for Christ's sake. Get with the times (I am talking to you too, ZIPS Dry Cleaners on West St.). They do, however, have a conveniently located ATM that I am sure charges you a $3 fee for that convenience. Also, the food is a little pricey for this type of fare. Overall, pretty decent Greek food, but remember to bring plenty of cash. read more

Authentic homemade Greek, Italian, and American food. Our family stopped for lunch. It is a casual take-out and sit-down reseraunt. The decor reminded us of a boardwalk beach establishment. It had a medertaian feel but certainly not fancy. The kids liked the big screen television that showed different Greek landscapes. I ordered the Greek sampler which had a variety of Greek items, including a Greek salad, stuffed grape leaves, moussaka, chicken and lamb gyro meat, a spinach pie, pita bread, and a creamy cucumber gyro sauce. The salad was good. The pita bread and sauce seemed very fresh and most likely made today. The lamb gyro meat seemed like it was cut right from the spit but probably cooked a day or two ago. The chicken gyro was a little older. The moussaka was good but obviously reheated and made several days ago. The stuffed grape leaves seemed the oldest, on the dry side but still okay. The spinach pie was excellent and seemed to be very fresh. The overall meal felt like a lunch of good Greek leftovers. It was good but I can not give it five stars. We also got a kids pizza, which was hot fresh and very good. As well as, a toasted Italian sub which was perfect. Along with an order of onion rings and fries. The French fries were particularly good. They were hot and soft in the inside while lightly crunchy and golden brown on the outside. We got two pieces of baklava to go. It seemed fresh and was delicious. Server, Will, was very relaxed yet attentive. Two negatives: Prices on the sit-down side are more expensive for the exact same items on the take-out menu. Second, you can not leave a tip for the server on a credit card (cash tips only). We will certainly be back again. I would like to try the gyro sandwich on my next visit. read more

There is no question that this is the best casual Greek restaurant in town. Their gyro is ridiculous and the Athenian chicken is my favorite. Fries are awesome, as are baklava. I don't even need anything else. And the amount of food for the price is wonderful. For fine dining Mediterranean entrees I would go to Paul's, but Chris' gets 5 stars for it being such a casual environment with such amazing food. I usually get carryout so it's perfect for a night when you just don't feel like cooking. read more

An Athenian gem! I lived in Annapolis for four years and never knew this wonderful secret spot existed. A friend took me once a few months ago, and I've been a weekly customer ever since. The owner, Stavroulla, is the sweetest, most sincere person that I have ever met. You can tell how passionate she is about her restaurant. The waitstaff, particularly Christina, Amanda, and Will are always friendly and efficient in multitasking. The service is amazing, but the food is SPECTACULAR. The spinach pie is beautifully seasoned and crisp; the chicken gyro is a delicious and healthier alternative to traditional gyro (to be honest though, the authentic gyro meat is absolutely to die for). Their baklava is made fresh daily and is the perfect size. Also, pro-tip, their cannolis are super delicious too. FINALLY got a chance to visit this establishment after years of friends/family telling me how great it is. I am a Greek food snob, thanks to my yia yia, so I entered with a jaded eye. We were seated immediately and comfortably and the first detail I noticed was that everything appeared to be spotlessly clean...a welcome change in a restaurant! I oredered the moussaka (my touchstone to establish how good a Greek restaurant's food is) and a bottle of Mythos beer, which was served with an ice-coated glass, thankfully. The meal was served promptly and was absolutely delicious...but I did make sure to save enough to take home...lol. I asked for the opportunity to purchase a t-shirt representing Chris's and, after conversing with the waitress in Greek for a few minutes (after telling her my name), the man I presume to be the owner discounted all of our purchase, to include the t-shirt. Two things stood out for me: 1) They now accept credit cards (one of the reasons I hadn't dined there yet) and 2): There were children (I assume grandkids of the family running the restaurant) roaming around the booth area. They were well-behaved, yet having fun. This established a family feel for Chris's that I don't often see in an eating establishment. I would highly recommend Chris's for their food, service and "homey" feel, overall. read more

The food here has really gone downhill, in my opinion... and the prices are way too high. I had a gyro (gyro meat, veggies on pita w/ tzatziki sauce) $8.75. It was ok, but unremarkable. I actually would've preferred a Gyro platter so that I could have some salad and rice, but I was unwilling to spend another $8.20 for fries and either a Greek salad or rice. Sorry. The gyro was marginal at best. The lamb in it was full of grizzle that made me nauseous. Can ya get sub-par lamb for the rotisserie? I'm surprised as I thought it was a universal and standard product. Unless, it was horse. That's why boasting about making the "Best Gyro in Annapolis" seems even more empty here. So, the place looks great for the quality and experience you're expecting. It is a bit confusing as it has a Greek deli on the left side and a restaurant look on the right. Lots of tables on the restaurant side and three tables that look to be for deli customers. No customers at all were in there at 1pm on a weekday. That should have been a tip off. I order my expensive gyro from who I gather is the grumpy lady from other Yelper reviews (even pricier than from my NJ-NY home area), head to the restroom, and when I come back, wait for it. Takes way too long for being the only customer. Then a grumpy guy wraps and bags it, I order a soda too, pay and then mention I'm going to sit in the oddly placed tables aforementioned. All of a sudden the scene takes me back to SNL Belushi at the Greek diner! "No dine in, take out" instead of "No Coke, Petsi". I go outside and again realize that eating a gyro in my car will only result in dirty garments and I'm traveling in business clothes. I go back in and plead and get more uncompromising responses from both the Fiddler and his wife. They tell me I can only sit in the deli seats but will have to leave a tip for the waitress who is no longer anywhere to be found cause there still are no customers but me. FU and who the heck is Chris and where is the Charcoal Pit and what fool came up with that concept and the customer service protocol? Next time I find a different Greek place consistent with the friendliness and customer service I always experience at these ethnic food places. read more

I'm still sick day two after my gyro salad. I watch the prep guy put my salad together for a takeout order, but I guess the greens were poorly washed. I only ate a small portion. Threw the rest out. Lamb was marginal. Salad greens were aged. Sorry, but not that great. Maybe another time. read more

Had the spaghetti wasn't to memorable but it was filling. Came in to sit down and try something else and no one came to help me. 1 waitress saw me stared at me and then continued to help her tables.
