Uhh, this is my first review. Ever. Combination of:
1) Being too lazy
2) Felt like had to review something epic or very unique
3) I always need 3 points
Haven't been to a Chowking since I went back to the PI 2 summers ago. So, I have no recollection of the menu other than Chinese influenced. A couple things that pop into my mind as soon as I walk into the restaurant:
1) WOW. Another all-filipino joint. Literally crawling of flips everywhere. Screw diversity! Even closer to my house than Goldilocks. *(sarcastic) yay*
2) Where the f*ck did all these filipinos come from? Never have I seen so many, not even in Red Ribbon @ the Great Mall next door. Seriously, as if they literally got off the plane
3) Chowking's sandwiched next to Tokyo Tokyo (2 more points on this: a) Seriously amuses me how filipinos can't create any single unique thing it seems. From music to tv/movies to food. Copy/paste. copy/paste...)
b) My Ninang (godmother for you none too familiar with this language called tagalog) seriously had no clue what kind of food they served at TOKYO TOKYO. Me: umm, the name wasn't enough? two times? silly family =P
food was decent. it's fast food, so expectations should be held around just above mcd's and below good/decent filipino restaurants like barrio fiesta. I glazed over the menu and can mainly say you can cleanly categorize into 5 sections:
1) Dim sum/appetizer like stuff + soup (siopao, lumpia shanghai, dumplings)
2) Fried chicken specials. Family combos or personal meals. Did consider this deeply, but as I was poised on going to a BBQ that afternoon, wanted something light
3) 4-6 combo meals. Think highlights of Panda + pancit + rice.
4) Pancit lovers. Seriously like 6 different kinds. canton guisado. bihon guisado. lomi lomi i think? miki-bihon. palabok. +others
5) Dessert drinks. Looks like the best value of this place. Seriously.
Our food order:
Grandma: Embotido combo. Has a weird twang in it. Not a true foodie, my palate isn't really refined, so I couldn't dare tell you exactly what was different from how I'm used to. I'd give it a 3.5/5
Ninang: Garlic chicken combo + Halo Halo. Wasn't too bad. Texture was pretty decent, meat: breading : bone ratio pretty-to-very-good. but, although crunchy, garlic aftertaste was more raw and sharp than cooked. 3.5
Me: Miki-bihon something, shanghai, halo-halo. 4/2/5
Basically a thicker noodle 'gently' mixed with my bihon. for 3.99 i thought it was great value at the time of ordering. upon opening, realized for $4, i'm kinda missing about 25-33% lesser than i should. i know, it's fast food, but i'm more of a value whore of a foodie than drop an easy $20 for one plate type of foodie. cost-value is important to me if i want to frequent this place more often.
anyways, the miki-bihon was pretty good. a bit salty, but not overbearingly. i've become more of a health nut in that i rarely go for truly salty fare or white creamy sauce type of foods if i can help it. plus i'll never stop eating to show off what glimpses of a 6-pack and other muscle i've got, so gotta curb the diet just a bit. as in, fried chicken only every other month now, instead of once a month...so, the veggies were pretty fresh. i did enjoy it w a lil lemon juice
lumpiang shanghai. ick. texture was good. meat was good. only tiny lil sh*ts. 8 for 2.50, not bad if you think about it. came with a 'siopao' sauce. whatever. i stay away from sauces with greater frequency in general now, particularly if it comes separately packaged and not in a dip container next to it. had a weird taste to it. say like ginger or something. i dunno. was a bit subtlety sharp for me. ate a few, gave some to my aunt, grandma, saved the rest of my moms at home.
BEST PART OF THE MEAL: HALO HALO.
yeah. it's dessert, not a surprise? shaddap. i don't do desserts as much anymore. only if other ppl order and of course i have to chip in. with 3 exceptions only: ice cream, tiramisu, creme brulee. if there's room, i'll order it. but only if with a group/special occasion. i'm too cheap to buy ice cream all the time as well
but seriously, for $3.99, that sucker was HUGE (twss joke here) great value. certainly more than what goldilocks offers (and they're opening in the same plaza, too!) grandma was telling me MIX! MIX! but still mixes when i scoop it up. i like slightly isolating the ube and other pieces per scoop so i can taste it. wonderful. def more value than regular pearl teas and most halo halo's out there. just more liquid slightly lesser ice cream. but in very good proportion
Final thoughts:
-this crap's still salty fare. go for the dessert 'drinks'
-very polite staff. among the few things i love about flip joints vs non. will find seating for you if available if you ask
-seating's terrible. if busy. they share with tokyo tokyo
-no non-asians. if i ever see any, i'd get creeped out unless they're with filipino friends. otherwise, it's like a 50yr old man hanging out at a middle school but no kid. read more
