What a great find! We had seen this little restaurant on our way back from another one we had been to on the edge of the water the previous weekend so this Saturday we decided to go try it out. Boy was it a surprise, it is also on the edge of the water and it has a little hut on the outside but it was a hot day so we decided to sit inside. This is literally your quintessential neighborhood diner. Music playing, customers all seem to be regulars, and a very homey feel. Our waitress was really helpful explaining the dishes and beer options. We had to try the half pot of chowder and it was delicious, I also highly recommend the fried mushrooms and their cajun sauce which I brought a tub home as it is soo good. What I notice and like, everyone nods at you and trust me... we don't look like fisherman or port workers but that doesn't matter; people are friendly! Still one of my favorite small seafood restaurants in Jacksonville. I was concerned when it was sold a while back but all my fears have been put to rest. It's actually better than ever with more seating inside and an outdoor pavilion on the water with picnic tables. We both love the chowder in our house buy they make perfect peel and eat shrimp and an amazing blacken mahi mahi. Honestly, I haven't had anything here I was 100% satisfied with. I don't know if that's the owners name, but I can't think of another name that would've made such a perfect impact, Chowder Pete's, Chowder Bob's, Chowder Jack's......actually, Chowder Jax would be a pretty good restaurant name. Anyways, this chowder is good. Really good. Really really good. I was expecting like a white clam chowder, but this more like a.....like a fish stew. It's super chunky. Some of these potato chunks are asking for more than one bite. Also, it has an amazing kick to it. I can eat very spicy food, and these front loaded scovilles made a firm impression. Even the coleslaw was quite spicy. I asked the owner/manager if people occasionally complain about it, and surprisingly, she said not really. There's a good amount of it. Their other veggies look pretty fresh too. The gator tale was better than Safe Harbor's, but that's partly because Safe Harbor's gator is probably one of their worst items. The best gator tail I've had in Jax so far was actually at Gumbo Ya Ya's. Unfortunately, that joint is now closed since the place was crappy overall. The burger was great too. The meat was thick and juicy. When you press the pillowy top bun down, the patty starts leaking fluids like a sponge. Update: Amy is the best and makes you feel like family. Our second meal was take out and we still had amazing food and drinks and conversation while waiting. I will say the jalapeño Cole slaw was so good the first time, it's disappointing it's not on the menu every day! I love this place so much! My husband and son went fishing all day today in Fernandina and didn't catch anything big enough to take home to cook, so we were still craving seafood for dinner... I've heard amazing things about this place, but I thought they shut down. Apparently they are under new management and wow I can tell how much the owners care about their food quality and customers! First plus: only 6 miles from our house off of Heckscher. 2nd plus: I got the special of the day: blackened snapper with a homemade jalapeño coleslaw with a homemade Cajun sauce. Guys. This is the best fish sandwich I have ever had in my life! No lie. Only downfall is it's only ala cart, but it's not expensive for the quality of what you're getting. There is no kids meals, but I'm not subtracting a star, because it's not the kind of place that cares about what chains care about. It's a locals place and my son got fries and ate more when he got home. We also got the fish dip and it was very yummy! Beers were local and cheap and so was wine! Never again ! Mostly, the customer is not always right at this restaurant, wow!! I ordered a seafood platter which consisted of fish, scallops and shrimp. However, I was served only fried shrimp. as our server, Jessica set the shrimp down in front of me. I told her I ordered the platter and she said no you didn't and turned and walked away. No question. No nothing just told me no I didn't. How rude. My husband told me he most definitely heard me say the seafood platter. A few minutes later, Jessica comes back out and offered to have the fish and scallops cooked up for me. I told her forget it what an awful experience.! if you ever have Jessica as a server, I would point to the menu and have her read back what she's writing down. The food served at our table was OK nothing outstanding a bit overpriced and then if you wanted anything on the side you had to order it the least expensive side was french fries at 395. The floors had tons of soil all around the edges of everywhere and it's obvious it has been there for a long long time. the one and only good thing I can say about this place is I did like the cocktail sauce it is incredibly strong horseradish in the sauce. This one has been on my wish list for a while! Finally I got the opportunity to see what all the chatter was about. On the way I asked myself if my GPS had it right because as far as I knew, there were only roads, a highway, and a gas station out there. But being out in nearly nowhere is perfect for one of the very best ma and pop shops I've ever had the privilege to eat in! And this restaurant is ma and pop in every sense of the meaning! Do not expect fancy decor or trendy chairs and tables in this place (thank goodness!). The chairs are metal - all so basic that you know this place has been here for quite a while. I was approached by a stellar server, Nikki. Asked a few questions and placed my order. Of course the chowder was number one on my list. But then, as I looked through the sandwiches, I saw that they had blackened mahi mahi! My all time favorite! Then got a coleslaw and iced tea to go along with it. I know many have written good things about this chowder and I can say much as well. But I won't go too much into detail. Let's just say I wanted to pick up a full pot for take-out the day after I first tried it and - I called too late! They had run out on me. This chowder is an area staple and if you love a good cajun chowder, this one is it. Well, this Midwest man may not be the best authority on that - but hey!! This is Yelp!!! I don't have to be!! My wife and I went. The prices are pretty good and we enjoyed the food. We had the fish dip as an App and went with the special: shrimp four ways, for dinner. It was pretty good. Some of the shrimp didn't seem as fresh as I would expect and could have come from Sysco. Overall, it was a pretty good meal. My wife, sister-in-law, and I decided to eat at Chowder Ted's Friday evening. When we arrived at the restaurant, around 6pm, we were able to be seated immediately in the front dining area. Our waitress, Nikki, was personable and did a good job waiting on us. We started out with a Fried Calamari appetizer and a Conch Fritters app. Both appetizers come with Chowder Ted's house Cajun sauce which didn't have much Cajun flavor as far as the three of us were concerned. My wife and her sister are born and raised in Key West so they know how to make Conch Fritters and what they should taste like. The fritters we had were totally bland where there should have been flavors of garlic, salt, pepper, bell pepper, and a little hot sauce. From what it sounded like we weren't the first customers to mention how bland their fritters are. The fried Calamari also needed additional seasoning. Their special last night was Blackened Sheepshead which you could get as a sandwich or a meal with a salad. Any sides you wanted besides the Sandwich, or the Fish/Salad plate are Ala Carte. My wife and her sister both ordered the Blackened Sheepshead Sandwich, and my wife ordered a side of Onion Rings for them to share. I ordered the Blackened Sheepshead fish & salad plate with a side of Onion Rings as well. All of us agreed that the Blackened Sheepshead was over cooked and very dry. My wife thought she had found a bone in her fish but figured out it was just a dry piece of fish. Next time we'll get our food fried. We all ate all of our fish, but I did let our server, Nikki, know what we thought about the cook of the fish. They ended up taking one of our dinners off the check which we didn't ask for or expect so kudos to the restaurant. The salad that came with my plate was wonderfully refreshing. The two orders of Onion Rings we received were also good. We do plan to return as we all feel the need to come back and actually try Chowder Ted's Chowder since that's their name. read more

We finally checked out this tiny local spot off Heckshire Drive on the way home from the beach. Perfect little spot for a sandy lunch. Super casual, super small with about 6 tables in the front room, a small bar seating 5 or 6 people, and a couple more tables in the back room. We arrived right at opening on a Saturday (12pm) and got a table with no wait. By the time we were leaving there were a couple parties waiting for tables. The CHOWDA is the bomb! We really loved it - I considered getting a pot to go. For $12, the pot filled our 4 cups with a bit to spare. It had a little kick and was loaded up with fish, tomatos, potatoes, onions, carrots and green olives. The other things I tried were average. My crab cake sandwich was decent but charred black. My kids split a tilapia sandwich which 1 kid loved and 1 spit out. Fries average, onion rings not the best. My husband loved his shrimp poboy. We spent $60 for 3 sandwiches, a pot of chowder, side of fries, side of onion rings, water. Maybe a tad pricy. ***No kids menu or high chairs. The atmosphere and service was great. Just off the beaten path of Rt. 95 is Chowder Ted's. This appears to be a locals place that also gets its share of travelers. We started out with fried calamari with Cajun sauce and the complimentary fish spread for appetizer. I had to try the chowder considering the name of this place so I also got a half pot of chowder with Texas Toast. We all got the fried flounder sandwich for a main course. All the food tasted great and the portion size was tremendous. I especially liked the broth with the chowder. The tomato-based broth was very tasty and was loaded with vegetables. The calamari was a hit with the kids. The flounder sandwich was hot light and flaky. My kids are usually finicky about eating fish. On this day all three are every drop of their sandwiches. We decided to try Chowder Ted's because it sits on the water in an excellent location and serves seafood. It is a hole-in-the-wall place. We entered the restaurant and realized it is very small with about 6 tables and a small bar. To our surprise, no views of the water. We checked the small room in the back that only had one longer table but no water views. They do have a covered picnic table outside by the water but I do not believe it is for food service unless you got food to-go. Friendly staff and they serve beer & wine. They have some craft beer as well. Beer price is reasonable too. Menu is limited but have appetizers such as conch fritters which were pretty good and of course Ted's famous chowder that is a tomato based chowder. You can get various fresh fish and either get it on a plate or sandwich. The fried flounder was good and two large filets were served on a bun with lettuce and their cajun sauce which is excellent. The po boy cajun shrimp sandwich was good and loaded with shrimp and also served with cajun sauce. Sides are sold separately and we opted for the cajun fries. All in all the food was good although limited. The service was good too. The lack of view and size of the place was disappointing and was the main initial draw for us. We probably won't go back because of that but nothing bad about the food. read more

Part of Kitchen is wide open to part of dining area. We had cold beers ($3 - they have 16 oz PBR and Rolling Rock for $2.25) conch fritters, and fish dip to start - so good. Conch is so present, sauce so complimentary - rivals Green Shutters. Fish dip is chunky and fine. Nice smoked fish flavor. Trigger fish salad and coconut shrimp. This place is a hidden gem. The shrimp were perfectly done. The blackened trigger fish salad was light, flavorful, and delicious. We will be back! read more

Jacksonville has no shortage of seafood restaurants, but Chowder Ted's is one that comes up in discussion often for best in the city. The problem is that it's a little out of the way, being on the north side of town. Fortunately after a day at the beach, I was finally able to hit this place up. Be warned that it is a small building, so during busy times, there's a good chance you'll be waiting a little bit. Fortunately we got there pretty soon after opening, so we got seated immediately; but a line was out the door at one point while we were eating. So for an appetizer, I had to get a pot of the chowder (it's called Chowder Ted's, after all). And I'm happy to say, it lived up to their name. A quick heads up that it's not the typical New England style chowder, and honestly I'm thankful for that. This was better than any NE chowder I've ever had. It had a fantastic depth of flavor, and even had a slight kick to it. There were big chunks of potatoes and even some green olives (which surprisingly worked well); but sadly I didn't get a ton of seafood in my bowl. For my entree I chose the Cajun Shrimp Po Boy. It was overstuffed with beautiful Mayport shrimp that had a deliciously sauced deep fry on them. It was actually one of the best Po boys I've had in a long time. I highly recommend it. The fries and onion rings on the side were good, but not great. I should have gotten some of the po boy sauce to dip them in.
