I wanted some good chowder. So, Ernie and I headed over there for lunch. I also had a crab cake meal on a bed of salad. Ernie had a Cajun burger and Cajun fries. The front dining area was full, so it was bar or the back dining area. So, we chose the back dining area. I loved the outdoor picnic tables and gazebo too. Great food. The Waitress took care of us. Pros:crab cakes Cons: the exit-it is up on a steep uphill. There is a blind spot of oncoming traffic from the bridge. Recommend? Yes
Great little fishing camp vibe spot. Very unassuming, right on the water. Staff were friendly, gave us a warm welcome. We were pressed for time as we stopped in between meetings. We have our Shrimp Po' Boy and Oyster Po' Boy to go. Bread was fried on the grill, shrimp and oysters tasted great. Highly recommend. Would love to come back to try the fish dip and pot of chowder.
Always good stuff here. I shared the half pot of chowder with my grandson. It was enough to share as an app. We both had a po boy. He had shrimp, I had Oyster. They fill these things as full as they can. I just need to remember that I don't like the Cajun fries and need to order the regular fries. The service is always good.
We've passed Chowder Ted's many times when taking the "back roads" to Jacksonville. The ride down Heckscher Drive is always scenic, and we've never really felt the need to stop between Jax and Amelia Island, so we've never partaken of their hospitality ... till today. It was a gorgeous day; sunny and 75, as the song says; it was a day begging for a drive in the ragtop. So, off we went, and followed our bellies to Chowder Ted's. It's an unassuming place, a low slung building right on the water that you'd miss if you blinked. We parked and stepped inside. The front dining room isn't huge; but there is a more room outside. We sat at the bar, and the bar service area doubles as the kitchen; there are no hiding cooking mistakes here! It was the lunch hour, so we didn't order drinks, but beer was plentiful if you wanted it. We decided to start with the smoked fish dip and crackers, and a half pot of their chowder. The fish dip was fabulous; a double scoop served with club crackers and lemon. We found that the dip was perfectly accented with a healthy dollop of Tabasco green hot sauce; we didn't leave a bit uneaten. We shared a half pot of their chowder, which worked out to a full cup of soup each, plus a little more. It was manhattan style soup with a tomato broth, and plenty of chunks of potato, carrot, tomato and celery. It also had huge chunks of tender sweet white fish, and, surprisingly to me, green olives. We inhaled it, and didn't leave a drop. Pro-tip: Order a slice of two of the Texas Toast for dipping. We then shared their fried seafood platter, with a side of onion rings (a la carte). The seafood was served with cocktail sauce (which packed a reasonably strong horseradish punch, just the way we like it) and a thick Cajun remoulade. There was a whole filet of fish (looked and tasted like flounder), about 10 tender fried shrimp (which were properly butterflied before cooking; bravo!), and half a dozen tender fried sea scallops. I'm always a little hesitant to order fried scallops as they tend to come to the table overdone and rubbery. Not here; they were perfectly cooked; super tender and sweet. The platter was big enough for us to share; we were so full we didn't finish the side order of onion rings. All in, with soft drinks and tip, lunch was about $60. Great value for the quality of the ingredients and the flavors presented. Highly recommended for a great seafood lunch in the "north Florida Keys".
Hole in the wall LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF HIT!! From the heavy metal music to the ladies behind the counter who took turns greeting each customer and serving ;). Chowder was nice and chunky and RED-my personal favorite. The fish dip was brown- that was new for me - but tasted good-no chunks of fish tho. Don't hesitate to stop in!
Stopped by based on reviews. I can see why! Welcoming as soon as you walk into the door. Very personable and helpful server - she made some good recommendations. Had the Brussels sprouts to start and they were crispy and delicious with a ginger sesame dressing. My husband started with the 1/2 pot of chowder which was so so good - not heavy, just fresh flavors. Then he tried the blackened redfish sandwich and I had the blackened tuna sandwich. Both were really good and fresh.
The best hidden gem in Jacksonville. We had a spectacular lunch. The crawfish were the best I have had outside of New Orleans. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. The seafood platter was huge and delicious. The breading was light and let the fresh seafood shine. Love the atmosphere and the service from the bar. You have to go here.
We decided to try Chowder Ted's after it was written up as one of the best Seafood Hidden Gems. Very unassuming presence both inside and outside but they make up for in flavor and service. Their chowder is a Manhattan Style tomato based variation with tons of flavor and also green olives which I loved. The Crab Cake plate for $10.95 is the perfect lunch if you're not trying to fill up to too much. Super flavor and a good value for the price Miranda is a rockstar waitress who has tons of energy and knows the menu very well!
We had a friend in town and wanted to get some dinner close by. Chowder Ted's was a 10 minute drive so we decided to give them a try. We walked in on a weekday evening and they weren't too busy, only a couple occupied tables. Our server came over and we placed our beer order and a conch fritter appetizer. I liked the local brewery beer options they had. The conch fritters were pretty good, decent amount of conch and good dipping sauce. Hubby and I ordered a seafood platter with grouper and Cajun fries to share since it sounded like it would be plenty. Our friend order some wings. Our food took a bit longer than expected to come out. The seafood platter was large and came with a fried grouper filet, fried scallops and fried shrimp. The grouper was good, flaky with a nice breading. The scallops were small and a little gritty. We thought the shrimp were the best thing on the plate. The Cajun fries were also really good. Our friend found a hair on his wings, he thought that the wings were ok. Not the best, not the worst. The hair may have had something to do with it. Overall, I thought they had good beer and decent food. Not sure if we will be back.
Great to be back at Chowder Ted's! I feel like it has been at least 4 or even 5 years since we have been to Chowder Ted's which I know feel like a sin. We arrived around 5:15PM on a Saturday and were able to get a table. We really lucked out since their isn't a lot of seating inside and it was chilly out and being on the water also brings in the wind. Our waitress came to check out on and we noticed they do take credit cards now which is very helpful. We ordered some draft beers and $4.50 for imports is great. Plus $2.75 for 16oz PBR's you aren't going to beat that. We looked over the menu and they had added more to it since last time. If course the OG's are still there but it's nice to have more options. Our waitress did let us know that they were out of Crab Cakes and Chowder which was a bummer but that's how you know how fresh everything is. Don't help that we got there past 5:00PM either. We of course had to get the Conch Fritters for an appetizer. I will say their Conch Fritters are the best I have ever had still. They are even beating the ones in the Keys for me. I decided to get something new for my entrée and went for the Fried Seafood Platter. The Fried Seafood Platter comes with Shrimp, Scallops (Bay Scallops), and Fish (I believe it was Tilapia. Our food came out within 10 to 15 minutes and my platter was huge. I couldn't believe they even had more shrimp and scallops under the fish too. What really stuck out to me was that the shrimp were lightly battered which was great. Everything was so fresh that I of course finished it all up. Ashley also got the Cocktail Sauce were we both agree was the best we had ever had. They for sure use a good amount of Horseradish cause it had some kick. I will say there was a $2.50 service charge I'm guessing for using a credit card so just a heads up if that's gonna break you then bring cash. I can't wait to come back and it will for sure be sooner then 4 to 5 years.
After driving past this place for YEARS to get to either Sandollar or Palm's, I stopped in tonight. And now I'm kicking myself repeatedly! Chowder Ted's isn't a large place. Come right in and seat yourself. You'll find reasonable beer and wine prices, regulars enjoying their spot, and GREAT food! I asked my server what to order, and her first suggestion was the Ahi Tuna- which I love but I had for lunch. So her second suggestion was the Red Rock Shrimp. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. The flavor is amazing- and Chowder Ted's does the amazing thing I have rarely seen and they DEVEIN the shrimp before steaming. The result is an easy to peel, deliciously clean shrimp. All the sides are add-on, and I ordered the onion rings. Delicious, perfectly cooked. Again, would highly recommend. The location is beautiful, the food is fantastic, service is amazing. Stop driving past this place! Going to be kicking myself for a long time to come

I had been putting off coming here, worrying it would be overrated. I'm so glad we finally stopped by! Everyone kept commenting how fresh our food was and my son ate alllllll his shrimp even though they weren't in the shape of popcorn which tells you the flavor was !! I had the fish tacos... we also had the blackened mahi and other dishes I can't remember now. It was all good!! And the view, I mean, come on. The view read more

What a great find! We had seen this little restaurant on our way back from another one we had been to on the edge of the water the previous weekend so this Saturday we decided to go try it out. Boy was it a surprise, it is also on the edge of the water and it has a little hut on the outside but it was a hot day so we decided to sit inside. This is literally your quintessential neighborhood diner. Music playing, customers all seem to be regulars, and a very homey feel. Our waitress was really helpful explaining the dishes and beer options. We had to try the half pot of chowder and it was delicious, I also highly recommend the fried mushrooms and their cajun sauce which I brought a tub home as it is soo good. The fried oyster po'boy was also a notable mention! read more
1/21/22. Always a treat to stop and have lunch here! It is not a fancy restaurant by any means, but an old, fish camp! What I notice and like, everyone nods at you and trust me... we don't look like fisherman or port workers but that doesn't matter; people are friendly! It could be because they are getting or know they will be getting some good food! We still had to get a pot of chowder and then a lunch portion of seafood-shrimp, scallops and fish! Yum, yum! read more

Still one of my favorite small seafood restaurants in Jacksonville. I was concerned when it was sold a while back but all my fears have been put to rest. It's actually better than ever with more seating inside and an outdoor pavilion on the water with picnic tables. We both love the chowder in our house buy they make perfect peel and eat shrimp and an amazing blacken mahi mahi. Honestly, I haven't had anything here I was 100% satisfied with. I highly recommend Chowder Ted's. If you have to wait for a table just order a beer or wine at the bar. I promise it's worth the wait! read more
Was visiting the area on business and this restaurant was highly recommended. Don't let the appearance and size of the building fool you, this hidden gem is worth the stop. Inside seating is small but lots of outdoor seating available. I had blackened fish sandwich with a 1/2 pot of chowder. Fish was good but the chowder was over the top. Highly recommend a lunch stop if your in the area. read more

Hahahaha, Chowder Teeeeddddsss! What a great restaurant name. I don't know if that's the owners name, but I can't think of another name that would've made such a perfect impact, Chowder Pete's, Chowder Bob's, Chowder Jack's......actually, Chowder Jax would be a pretty good restaurant name. Anyways, this chowder is good. Really good. Really really good. I was expecting like a white clam chowder, but this more like a.....like a fish stew. It's super chunky. Some of these potato chunks are asking for more than one bite. Also, it has an amazing kick to it. I can eat very spicy food, and these front loaded scovilles made a firm impression. Even the coleslaw was quite spicy. I asked the owner/manager if people occasionally complain about it, and surprisingly, she said not really. There's a good amount of it. Their other veggies look pretty fresh too. The gator tale was better than Safe Harbor's, but that's partly because Safe Harbor's gator is probably one of their worst items. The best gator tail I've had in Jax so far was actually at Gumbo Ya Ya's. Unfortunately, that joint is now closed since the place was crappy overall. The burger was great too. The meat was thick and juicy. When you press the pillowy top bun down, the patty starts leaking fluids like a sponge. I found this place only because I had to drive past it, but you're definitely going to see me here again. read more

Update: Amy is the best and makes you feel like family. Our second meal was take out and we still had amazing food and drinks and conversation while waiting. I will say the jalapeño Cole slaw was so good the first time, it's disappointing it's not on the menu every day! I love this place so much! My husband and son went fishing all day today in Fernandina and didn't catch anything big enough to take home to cook, so we were still craving seafood for dinner... I've heard amazing things about this place, but I thought they shut down. Apparently they are under new management and wow I can tell how much the owners care about their food quality and customers! First plus: only 6 miles from our house off of Heckscher. 2nd plus: I got the special of the day: blackened snapper with a homemade jalapeño coleslaw with a homemade Cajun sauce. Guys. This is the best fish sandwich I have ever had in my life! No lie. Only downfall is it's only ala cart, but it's not expensive for the quality of what you're getting. There is no kids meals, but I'm not subtracting a star, because it's not the kind of place that cares about what chains care about. It's a locals place and my son got fries and ate more when he got home. We also got the fish dip and it was very yummy! Beers were local and cheap and so was wine! Defoe was fun and made you feel like a local even though it was our first time. My husband got the oyster po boy and there were 9 fried oysters on the sandwich. He was so happy!!! My favorite part is that our server seemed to be the owner and made you feel at home. This is our favorite new spot! read more

This one has been on my wish list for a while! Finally I got the opportunity to see what all the chatter was about. On the way I asked myself if my GPS had it right because as far as I knew, there were only roads, a highway, and a gas station out there. But being out in nearly nowhere is perfect for one of the very best ma and pop shops I've ever had the privilege to eat in! And this restaurant is ma and pop in every sense of the meaning! Do not expect fancy decor or trendy chairs and tables in this place (thank goodness!). The chairs are metal - all so basic that you know this place has been here for quite a while. I was approached by a stellar server, Nikki. Asked a few questions and placed my order. Of course the chowder was number one on my list. But then, as I looked through the sandwiches, I saw that they had blackened mahi mahi! My all time favorite! Then got a coleslaw and iced tea to go along with it. I know many have written good things about this chowder and I can say much as well. But I won't go too much into detail. Let's just say I wanted to pick up a full pot for take-out the day after I first tried it and - I called too late! They had run out on me. This chowder is an area staple and if you love a good cajun chowder, this one is it. Well, this Midwest man may not be the best authority on that - but hey!! This is Yelp!!! I don't have to be!! I can speak about the blackened mahi mahi sandwich. It's simple - superbly spiced fresh mahi mahi, blackened but not blackened burned! Comes with lettuce, tomato, and their special sauce. I put it on mine and it was fantastic. I credit their choice in buns for their seafood as well. This restaurant has history out here I'm sure. In observing the folks in Chowder Ted's I saw many who appeared to be regulars. I stuck out as the sore thumb. I didn't mind as everyone was nice to me. I do like that this shop is next to the water as well. Gave me the opportunity to take a walk after dinner and catch a few good photos, along with the ones I took for Yelp. I have a love at first visit for this restaurant! If cajun food is your thing, head on over. If you want to try something new, head on over. If you're a Yelper and stuck on where to go for your next review, head on over!! Just get up and geaux geaux geaux!! Recommend: VERY HIGH read more

Had a great lunch today at Chowder Teds. A no frills place, but the food is very good and always consistent. Great value for a nicely prepared group of meals. See attached pictures. Fish specials every day and burgers too. One of my friends always gets the burgers and raves about them. Service was spectacular from the young lady whose name I didn't catch. Can't wait to bring other friends there. read more

My wife, sister-in-law, and I decided to eat at Chowder Ted's Friday evening. When we arrived at the restaurant, around 6pm, we were able to be seated immediately in the front dining area. Our waitress, Nikki, was personable and did a good job waiting on us. We started out with a Fried Calamari appetizer and a Conch Fritters app. Both appetizers come with Chowder Ted's house Cajun sauce which didn't have much Cajun flavor as far as the three of us were concerned. My wife and her sister are born and raised in Key West so they know how to make Conch Fritters and what they should taste like. The fritters we had were totally bland where there should have been flavors of garlic, salt, pepper, bell pepper, and a little hot sauce. From what it sounded like we weren't the first customers to mention how bland their fritters are. The fried Calamari also needed additional seasoning. Their special last night was Blackened Sheepshead which you could get as a sandwich or a meal with a salad. Any sides you wanted besides the Sandwich, or the Fish/Salad plate are Ala Carte. My wife and her sister both ordered the Blackened Sheepshead Sandwich, and my wife ordered a side of Onion Rings for them to share. I ordered the Blackened Sheepshead fish & salad plate with a side of Onion Rings as well. All of us agreed that the Blackened Sheepshead was over cooked and very dry. My wife thought she had found a bone in her fish but figured out it was just a dry piece of fish. Next time we'll get our food fried. We all ate all of our fish, but I did let our server, Nikki, know what we thought about the cook of the fish. They ended up taking one of our dinners off the check which we didn't ask for or expect so kudos to the restaurant. The salad that came with my plate was wonderfully refreshing. The two orders of Onion Rings we received were also good. We do plan to return as we all feel the need to come back and actually try Chowder Ted's Chowder since that's their name. read more

We finally checked out this tiny local spot off Heckshire Drive on the way home from the beach. Perfect little spot for a sandy lunch. Super casual, super small with about 6 tables in the front room, a small bar seating 5 or 6 people, and a couple more tables in the back room. We arrived right at opening on a Saturday (12pm) and got a table with no wait. By the time we were leaving there were a couple parties waiting for tables. The CHOWDA is the bomb! We really loved it - I considered getting a pot to go. For $12, the pot filled our 4 cups with a bit to spare. It had a little kick and was loaded up with fish, tomatos, potatoes, onions, carrots and green olives. The other things I tried were average. My crab cake sandwich was decent but charred black. My kids split a tilapia sandwich which 1 kid loved and 1 spit out. Fries average, onion rings not the best. My husband loved his shrimp poboy. We spent $60 for 3 sandwiches, a pot of chowder, side of fries, side of onion rings, water. Maybe a tad pricy. ***No kids menu or high chairs. The atmosphere and service was great. I'd definitely come back for the chowder! read more
Just off the beaten path of Rt. 95 is Chowder Ted's. This appears to be a locals place that also gets its share of travelers. We started out with fried calamari with Cajun sauce and the complimentary fish spread for appetizer. I had to try the chowder considering the name of this place so I also got a half pot of chowder with Texas Toast. We all got the fried flounder sandwich for a main course. All the food tasted great and the portion size was tremendous. I especially liked the broth with the chowder. The tomato-based broth was very tasty and was loaded with vegetables. The calamari was a hit with the kids. The flounder sandwich was hot light and flaky. My kids are usually finicky about eating fish. On this day all three are every drop of their sandwiches. The waitress was very friendly and provided excellent suggestions and service. Ted's will be on my short list for eastern Florida. Thanks. read more

We were headed to catty shack for a night feeding when a storm hit. Decided to grab a bite. Had heard that Teds was worth a visit, Oh! Right on the water past the port area. Nice Florida vista watching a late afternoon early evening Florida boomer fly by. Just a gravel turn off. A nice beer list and a few wines. Brianna was fast and friendly. Part of Kitchen is wide open to part of dining area. We had cold beers ($3 - they have 16 oz PBR and Rolling Rock for $2.25) conch fritters, and fish dip to start - so good. Conch is so present, sauce so complimentary - rivals Green Shutters. Fish dip is chunky and fine. Nice smoked fish flavor. Trigger fish salad and coconut shrimp. This place is a hidden gem. The shrimp were perfectly done. The blackened trigger fish salad was light, flavorful, and delicious. We will be back! read more
Jacksonville has no shortage of seafood restaurants, but Chowder Ted's is one that comes up in discussion often for best in the city. The problem is that it's a little out of the way, being on the north side of town. Fortunately after a day at the beach, I was finally able to hit this place up. Be warned that it is a small building, so during busy times, there's a good chance you'll be waiting a little bit. Fortunately we got there pretty soon after opening, so we got seated immediately; but a line was out the door at one point while we were eating. So for an appetizer, I had to get a pot of the chowder (it's called Chowder Ted's, after all). And I'm happy to say, it lived up to their name. A quick heads up that it's not the typical New England style chowder, and honestly I'm thankful for that. This was better than any NE chowder I've ever had. It had a fantastic depth of flavor, and even had a slight kick to it. There were big chunks of potatoes and even some green olives (which surprisingly worked well); but sadly I didn't get a ton of seafood in my bowl. For my entree I chose the Cajun Shrimp Po Boy. It was overstuffed with beautiful Mayport shrimp that had a deliciously sauced deep fry on them. It was actually one of the best Po boys I've had in a long time. I highly recommend it. The fries and onion rings on the side were good, but not great. I should have gotten some of the po boy sauce to dip them in. Overall it was a fun experience, and I'd love to go back again if I'm up on the north side . read more
