I wanted some good chowder. So, Ernie and I headed over there for lunch. I also had a crab cake meal on a bed of salad. Ernie had a Cajun burger and Cajun fries. The front dining area was full, so it was bar or the back dining area. So, we chose the back dining area. I loved the outdoor picnic tables and gazebo too. Great food. The Waitress took care of us. Pros:crab cakes Cons: the exit-it is up on a steep uphill. There is a blind spot of oncoming traffic from the bridge. Recommend? Yes
Great little fishing camp vibe spot. Very unassuming, right on the water. Staff were friendly, gave us a warm welcome. We were pressed for time as we stopped in between meetings. We have our Shrimp Po' Boy and Oyster Po' Boy to go. Bread was fried on the grill, shrimp and oysters tasted great. Highly recommend. Would love to come back to try the fish dip and pot of chowder.
Always good stuff here. I shared the half pot of chowder with my grandson. It was enough to share as an app. We both had a po boy. He had shrimp, I had Oyster. They fill these things as full as they can. I just need to remember that I don't like the Cajun fries and need to order the regular fries. The service is always good.
We've passed Chowder Ted's many times when taking the "back roads" to Jacksonville. The ride down Heckscher Drive is always scenic, and we've never really felt the need to stop between Jax and Amelia Island, so we've never partaken of their hospitality ... till today. It was a gorgeous day; sunny and 75, as the song says; it was a day begging for a drive in the ragtop. So, off we went, and followed our bellies to Chowder Ted's. It's an unassuming place, a low slung building right on the water that you'd miss if you blinked. We parked and stepped inside. The front dining room isn't huge; but there is a more room outside. We sat at the bar, and the bar service area doubles as the kitchen; there are no hiding cooking mistakes here! It was the lunch hour, so we didn't order drinks, but beer was plentiful if you wanted it. We decided to start with the smoked fish dip and crackers, and a half pot of their chowder. The fish dip was fabulous; a double scoop served with club crackers and lemon. We found that the dip was perfectly accented with a healthy dollop of Tabasco green hot sauce; we didn't leave a bit uneaten. We shared a half pot of their chowder, which worked out to a full cup of soup each, plus a little more. It was manhattan style soup with a tomato broth, and plenty of chunks of potato, carrot, tomato and celery. It also had huge chunks of tender sweet white fish, and, surprisingly to me, green olives. We inhaled it, and didn't leave a drop. Pro-tip: Order a slice of two of the Texas Toast for dipping. We then shared their fried seafood platter, with a side of onion rings (a la carte). The seafood was served with cocktail sauce (which packed a reasonably strong horseradish punch, just the way we like it) and a thick Cajun remoulade. There was a whole filet of fish (looked and tasted like flounder), about 10 tender fried shrimp (which were properly butterflied before cooking; bravo!), and half a dozen tender fried sea scallops. I'm always a little hesitant to order fried scallops as they tend to come to the table overdone and rubbery. Not here; they were perfectly cooked; super tender and sweet. The platter was big enough for us to share; we were so full we didn't finish the side order of onion rings. All in, with soft drinks and tip, lunch was about $60. Great value for the quality of the ingredients and the flavors presented. Highly recommended for a great seafood lunch in the "north Florida Keys".
Hole in the wall LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF HIT!! From the heavy metal music to the ladies behind the counter who took turns greeting each customer and serving ;). Chowder was nice and chunky and RED-my personal favorite. The fish dip was brown- that was new for me - but tasted good-no chunks of fish tho. Don't hesitate to stop in!
Stopped by based on reviews. I can see why! Welcoming as soon as you walk into the door. Very personable and helpful server - she made some good recommendations. Had the Brussels sprouts to start and they were crispy and delicious with a ginger sesame dressing. My husband started with the 1/2 pot of chowder which was so so good - not heavy, just fresh flavors. Then he tried the blackened redfish sandwich and I had the blackened tuna sandwich. Both were really good and fresh.
The best hidden gem in Jacksonville. We had a spectacular lunch. The crawfish were the best I have had outside of New Orleans. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. The seafood platter was huge and delicious. The breading was light and let the fresh seafood shine. Love the atmosphere and the service from the bar. You have to go here.
We decided to try Chowder Ted's after it was written up as one of the best Seafood Hidden Gems. Very unassuming presence both inside and outside but they make up for in flavor and service. Their chowder is a Manhattan Style tomato based variation with tons of flavor and also green olives which I loved. The Crab Cake plate for $10.95 is the perfect lunch if you're not trying to fill up to too much. Super flavor and a good value for the price Miranda is a rockstar waitress who has tons of energy and knows the menu very well!
We had a friend in town and wanted to get some dinner close by. Chowder Ted's was a 10 minute drive so we decided to give them a try. We walked in on a weekday evening and they weren't too busy, only a couple occupied tables. Our server came over and we placed our beer order and a conch fritter appetizer. I liked the local brewery beer options they had. The conch fritters were pretty good, decent amount of conch and good dipping sauce. Hubby and I ordered a seafood platter with grouper and Cajun fries to share since it sounded like it would be plenty. Our friend order some wings. Our food took a bit longer than expected to come out. The seafood platter was large and came with a fried grouper filet, fried scallops and fried shrimp. The grouper was good, flaky with a nice breading. The scallops were small and a little gritty. We thought the shrimp were the best thing on the plate. The Cajun fries were also really good. Our friend found a hair on his wings, he thought that the wings were ok. Not the best, not the worst. The hair may have had something to do with it. Overall, I thought they had good beer and decent food. Not sure if we will be back.
Great to be back at Chowder Ted's! I feel like it has been at least 4 or even 5 years since we have been to Chowder Ted's which I know feel like a sin. We arrived around 5:15PM on a Saturday and were able to get a table. We really lucked out since their isn't a lot of seating inside and it was chilly out and being on the water also brings in the wind. Our waitress came to check out on and we noticed they do take credit cards now which is very helpful. We ordered some draft beers and $4.50 for imports is great. Plus $2.75 for 16oz PBR's you aren't going to beat that. We looked over the menu and they had added more to it since last time. If course the OG's are still there but it's nice to have more options. Our waitress did let us know that they were out of Crab Cakes and Chowder which was a bummer but that's how you know how fresh everything is. Don't help that we got there past 5:00PM either. We of course had to get the Conch Fritters for an appetizer. I will say their Conch Fritters are the best I have ever had still. They are even beating the ones in the Keys for me. I decided to get something new for my entrée and went for the Fried Seafood Platter. The Fried Seafood Platter comes with Shrimp, Scallops (Bay Scallops), and Fish (I believe it was Tilapia. Our food came out within 10 to 15 minutes and my platter was huge. I couldn't believe they even had more shrimp and scallops under the fish too. What really stuck out to me was that the shrimp were lightly battered which was great. Everything was so fresh that I of course finished it all up. Ashley also got the Cocktail Sauce were we both agree was the best we had ever had. They for sure use a good amount of Horseradish cause it had some kick. I will say there was a $2.50 service charge I'm guessing for using a credit card so just a heads up if that's gonna break you then bring cash. I can't wait to come back and it will for sure be sooner then 4 to 5 years.
After driving past this place for YEARS to get to either Sandollar or Palm's, I stopped in tonight. And now I'm kicking myself repeatedly! Chowder Ted's isn't a large place. Come right in and seat yourself. You'll find reasonable beer and wine prices, regulars enjoying their spot, and GREAT food! I asked my server what to order, and her first suggestion was the Ahi Tuna- which I love but I had for lunch. So her second suggestion was the Red Rock Shrimp. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. The flavor is amazing- and Chowder Ted's does the amazing thing I have rarely seen and they DEVEIN the shrimp before steaming. The result is an easy to peel, deliciously clean shrimp. All the sides are add-on, and I ordered the onion rings. Delicious, perfectly cooked. Again, would highly recommend. The location is beautiful, the food is fantastic, service is amazing. Stop driving past this place! Going to be kicking myself for a long time to come
Divey beer bar meets seafood joint and it was perfect. It is a very unassuming building that is kind of tucked away. It is very simple inside, but the food makes up for any lack of ambiance or view. We ordered the seafood chowder (island style) first, which was so full of seafood and actually very filling. We ordered the conch fritters also and they were some of the best I have had, even in the Caribbean. The sauce that they serve with the fritters accents them perfectly. We really wanted to try more, but we were just too full to do it. If you are in the area, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

Everyone needs that little shack by the water, that is their go to for all things seafood. Luckily for Jax, we have Chowder Teds! First thing first: CASH ONLY. When I typed in the address to Waze, I kept looking for the unpaved, obscure road, off the beaten track.... and actually missed it smack dab in front of me because it was right there! (Look left right before the bridge.) The place is super casual and funky, just how you hope a little seafood shack would be. Next visit, I'll order the special, but this trip, I was craving oysters somethin' fierce, so opted for the Oyster Po Boy and onion rings. The Hoagie was soft and easy to bite in to, oysters were absolutely perfectly fried, and it was topped off by generous and leafy lettuce, tomato and a great sauce. Wouldn't change a thing about it. And the onion rings?! You know, at some places, you take a bite and the all of the onion comes out in that one bite, all mushy? NOT HERE FRIENDS: each bite was perfect, and the onion stayed in tact to ensure each bite was the right amount of onion and batter. Nothing special or crazy about the batter, just a solid ring. The chowder was warming and perfect for a cooler day, savory with a kick with nice seafood bites in the amazing broth. And lucky for me, it's only a quick 20 minute drive from Riverside... so I can't wait to go back for whatever Ted offers up as the special that day! (Highly recommend by other Yelpers!) Keep it up Ted! Made me smile that our group gave him a standing ovation after our lovely and fun dinner! read more
While I'm hesitant to give a 5 star review to somewhere I've only been to once, I feel confident in this decision b/c we had such a GREAT experience on our visit. We have had Chowder Ted's on our radar for a while now but the timing to get there just never worked out for us. Finally though we had an opening in the day on a day they were opened and made our way over there. It was pretty busy for the middle of the afternoon but luckily there were 2 seats available at the counter/bar, which was great since that's where we prefer to sit anyways and you have a perfect view of everything going on in the kitchen. Love that! Also love that they carry some local brews! We had to order the chowder (hello CHOWDER Ted's lol) and it was AMAZING!! It comes served in a pot right off the stove and I could have eaten the whole thing myself instead of sharing it with my husband :) For my lunch I got the Fried Mayport Shrimp and my husband ordered the Blackened Fish Sandwich. Both were FANTASTIC and super fresh!! Next time I have my eye on something from the specials board because they all sounded so good. **There's not a lot of signage when trying to locate this place so know where you're going ahead of time. read more
I'll just add my vote to all the others who recognize what a great little hole in the wall this place is. I stop in occasionally for lunch, since its close to work and it is consistently full of people and delivers high quality food with attentive service. Since chowder is in the name, you should definitely have a saucepan of chowder (yep, that's how they serve it). Shrimp, clams, tomatoes, veggies, great broth with a little kick. On my most recent visit, I had the special of the day - blackened tuna steak over mesculun greens. Very, very nice sushi grade tuna blackened / medium rare and tender inside.. read more
I get it. I understand why Bryan L. goes here multiple times every time he is in town. I'm not going to drive out of my way for it when I have several options at the beach, but this place deserves a Triple-D nomination for sure. Met a bunch of friends here for an early dinner. Was having a hard time figuring out what to order even though everyone was recommending the Daily Special. The special of the day was a Blackened Tuna with a ginger sesame salad. It looked good, but the Oyster Po'Boy was calling my name. The oysters were plump, the sauce was plentiful (but not overwhelming) and the flavor just worked. It filled by belly on this overcast evening and made me a happy girl. I do look forward to trying a couple of things if/when I make it back to Chowder Ted's. Definitely wouldn't be against scheduling in a lunch on my way to the airport, that's for sure. read more

We accidentally stumbled across this place this afternoon, and i will definitely be intentionally finding this place in the future!!! The food was amazing, the prices were great, the people (both that worked there and the other guests) were all super nice, and did i mention that the food was amazing??? I had a pot of Ted's Chowder. After i ordered i found out it was a red, seafood chowder, and not a white clam chowder like i had expected, but figured, what the heck...this place is called Chowder Ted's I'm trying the chowder. I LOVED it!!! My friend got half a pot of chowder, and the blackened ahi sandwich, which was their daily special. The sandwich was amazing!!! The ahi was so fresh, i literally wanted to order a filet just to eat raw. But instead, i tried his sandwich and wanted to eat the whole thing!!! The place is small, and it was super crowded with regulars, so you know it has to be good. And everyone there, EVERYONE, was super nice and welcoming. Definitely suggest checking this place out! read more
During dinner with a group of my Yeeps, a friend and I decided we wanted to check it out. Although the menu isn't very extensive, what they offered look quite pleasing. I decided on the Cajun shrimp sandwich, my friend ordered the tuna sandwich and we split a 1/2 pot of Ted's Chowder. Everything was extremely tasty. I would definitely make the trip to Chowder Ted's again. read more

On a cloudy Saturday night with a harvest moon rising in the East, I found my way to this little place (on Criag's sterling review) just 2 miles East of I-295 on the North side of the St. John's River. I laughed when I saw this small blue building on the edge of the river's tributary as it was surrounded by a sandy parking lot and looked like the furtherest thing from a restaurant that I had seen recently. Once inside, my opinion changed immediately as I was welcomed not only by the waitress, but also the other patrons of the casual and modestly comfortable space, which might have seated 25-30. While I was standing at the service bar, some of the patrons were talking to me about the menu and offering their opinions on what they liked. Spying my favorite section of any restaurant, I noted the beer selection generously supported local breweries with Bold City, Intuition, and Green Room beers as well as a representation from the "usual suspects" (Bud/Corona). After a friend joined me in the small dining area, we proceeded to sample the suggestions of the other patrons. I was pleased that the restaurant had made a stunning Cajun-styled and broiled grouper, which was served with spicy fries with Buffalo Wing sauce. That was an application I did not expect, but the Green Room's Pablo Ale served well to assuage its fire. After we finished, I discovered the bill to be very reasonable. I should note this is a cash-only venue, so one should be prepared. Looking back at my visit, I was very happy with this little place and i look forward to visiting again to try more of their Cajun-inspired cooking. read more

Places like this are what makes American food. You will never eat a better pot of stew. The recipe should be in the Smithsonian archive. Chowder ted s has been at this location for a long long time. Like a long time. One of the waitresses has been working there for over 20 years. If you fi.d a better bowl of chowder please tell me I want some. In the summer I get the half bowl half sandwich. In the winter I get a full pot of stew. If you eat this stew you can work all day with superhuman strength. One man captured a 18 foot aligator with one hand after eating a bowl of ted s stew. Feed this to your children and they will be olimpians, Astronauts and plane ol ass kickers. Puts led in your pencil. read more

I dig this place! This is my third visit and I still got the same thing...chowder...duh! I was with Mr.Yelp and he ordered the smoked fish dip (it was ok but not like crazy good over the moon good). I loved my chowdah, which honestly to this southern girl is like more of a stew! It's served in a cute pot which I just adore! The simplicity of this place is what makes it. I have had the shrimp po boy before and it was excellent! I have also had the grouper and it was also good! It's nestled in a quaint spot right off of Hecksher Drive on the northside of Jacksonville. It's easy to miss! Not a ton of parking and that's because they don't have a ton of tables! Just can't go wrong here but remember to bring CASH!!!!! That's all they take! read more

Didn't have the famous chowder but defiantly will next visit!!!! The place is infront of the water even though its next to the major road toward the beach but its super peaceful late afternoon. Had fish sandwich and can't remember the other sandwich name but both were delicious ! They had good amount of beer menu and some wine. Small local place, been open for 18 years , friendly staff , and cook right in front of you. They don't take credit cards so bring cash !!! read more
Drive by too fast and you'll miss this blue painted gem tucked off in the cut! Sittin' on the water by a bay, my mouth was already waterin' cause I knew this fish was fidna be fresh. What I wasn't ready for was that tasty chowder in a pot. Y'all, they serve it to you in. the. dern. pot. Like one of them old ones your grandma wouldn't ever let you throw out. Piping hot and so dang delicious. Like, I drank that roux with my straw when I was finished. And yes I held the damn pot to my face like it was a margarita glass. Yes there are pictures to prove it. I look drunk. And I was. Drunk in love with all them finely melded flavors. My favorite thing about this was the green olives. The brine those mugs added made me chair dance. Then I went and ordered me a fried tilapia sammich. Whatever that special sauce is ... finger lickin', lettuce drippin' gudt. Hot and fresh on a sturdy but cushy bun with plump juicy tomatoes. Huuuuuursh. I ate it all. Save for a few fries. I was too ambitious. Marvelous service by some super chill, mega amiable ladies. It's worth gettin' off the hard, beaten I-95 path to sample real good hook-to-table cookin'. read more

I had the fried shrimp and it was really good. However, everything is a la carte so it was just a plate of shrimp for 9.00 and then I ordered a side salad. It was 4.50 so I was expecting a nice salad. Maybe some cheese, maybe a couple of croutons. Nope. It looked like a set up for a hamburger. It was literally lettuce with one slice of tomato and a ring of raw onion. For 4.50!!! They should honestly be ashamed of themselves for that one. read more
