If it was possible, I would not give any stars to this place. I have been coming here for years since it was at the old location. I stopped for awhile after I noticed the quality of their food decreased but decided to give it a try the other day and once again today. The food and drinks used to be so great and it would only make sense for it to get even better but it has only gotten worse. I am utterly sad that its sister restaurant, Plates, is now permanently closed because it was amazing. The food was fresh and healthy whereas Chopstix, it is quite greasy, has no flavor & the portion sizes are also very small. The lady behind the counter is rude and never gets my order right. What used to be a very good, inexpensive place for soup and noodles has gone so far downhill I will no longer frequent them. Since 2013 we ate there or got take out about once a week. Lately I learned they no longer make their own broth and now use a commercial base (I saw the box sitting on the back bar). There are far better places to get your soup fix. read more

I would only recommend the boba and slushies here tbh. I ordered pork egg rolls once and even specified that I had a shrimp allergy. Bit into the egg roll only to find out I bit into shrimp, so avoid if you have food allergies since there seems to be not much quality control. read more

The people next to me got served their water, while the server said, "oops I almost forgot about your waters." I had to get my own water out of my car. I was visiting a friend in seaside today and we had dinner at this Chopstix location. Chopstix has never disappointed me, but I have never been to the one on Fremont before. It was a wonderful experience! The restaurant is beautiful with lovely artwork and a super neat waterfall in the front entryway! The staff was so friendly and the food was amazing as always! We have ordered here for delivery through DoorDash about 3 times, and we have also been to the restaurant to eat. The food is okay. We ordered from them tonight and it was pretty bad. I got tofu banh mi, and my husband got pork banh mi. We also ordered fresh spring rolls. The spring rolls were nothing special. They came with pork, shrimp, lettuce and noodles. They really needed mint or cilantro in them. The sandwiches were awful. The bread was so stale that we could barely eat it. The tofu is always over-cooked and tonight was no exception. Today is one day I didn't have my cell or camera and I was bummed as our lunch spread rocked today... fried pork eggrolls, French fries .... why not?, Pho Ba (pho tai at other joints) with the freshest plate of bean sprouts (I was overjoyed), Vietnamese style BBQ beef shortribs plate and a Watermelon Slushie w/Boba then later without. I have been a customer at the Seaside location, mostly purchasing Bahn Mi sandwiches to go, for about 2 years. The BBQ pork Bahn Mi is very good, for lack of any better bahn mi joints in this area. Upon my first visit to pick up my order I was surprised and dismayed at how dirty the restaurant was. Even the front door was filthy - I didn't want to touch it. The staff is young, rude and unfriendly. Tables are un bussed and the floor riddled with food scraps. A waiter emerged from the kitchen balancing plates and bowls against his dirty t shirt ( hello - ever heard of Trays??? ) and he was wearing sandals with no socks. I tried very hard to block these things out, just get my fix and go.... But with the disgusting photos of dead rodents, rat feces and unsafe food handling practices that have re- surfaced in the media, I must warn you to steer clear of this establishment. read more

Seriously I must have ordered the wrong thing. Bo bun hue turned out to be gray (??!!!) with chunky, dried meat or hard jelly things. Perhaps I went on an off day as well (Friday for lunch). The service was fair, although they ran out of bread (it was 10:45AM -- right after opening). Since their menu is half soup, half sandwich-based, I expected at least the bread would be in stock, even if fillings weren't fully ready-to-order. Their sandwiches looked so delicious, so I am very regretful that I need to assess this place based on one visit. Since I need to also be fair --this place is called a boba shop as well-- I tried lavender milk tea with boba, and it was decently powder based (I could've found this at Quickly's). The milk tea wasn't bad, but it also wasn't exceptional. To add to the experience, my dining companion had the rice noodle bowl with five spice chicken --oily, not crispy, sweet (more like bbq chicken), very little veggies, and sans mint and basil. Five-star criteria for restaurants for me is simple. For starters, the food must be top-tier. I'm not talking about the psuedo-intelligent, overpriced top-tier, the food just has to be good. I'm from humble beginnings, which means I do not have a sophisticated palate, I'm just as satisfied with a greasy cheeseburger as I would be with Foie Gras, it's just gotta be good, that's all I care about. Secondly, the service has to be genuine and expeditious. I want to know that I'll be taken care of and not have to ask for water or extra napkins an innumerable amount of times. Thirdly, I want convenience. I have docked stars for businesses in the past simply because I couldn't use my debit or credit card. I never carry cash, so I hate having to make extra preparations to go to a bank just to eat somewhere. I know this isn't a big deal for some, but convenience is paramount for me. Chopstix didn't meet my third criterion, but I overlooked that because the food was just that good and the price was just that right. My fiancee who is probably the most closed minded person I know when it comes to food (it has improved with time) loved every bite so that's saying something. I ordered the #9 - A large bowl of Grilled 5-Spice Chicken which sat atop a bed of vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, mint, lettuce and cucumber, all for $5.50, which is cheaper and healthier than a value meal at McDonalds and tastes way better. The lady ordered a BBQ Sandwich (Banh Mi) and it was tasty as well. Their Boba selection is impressive and the taste rivals anything you would find in the South Bay. I ordered a Lychee Nut Boba and it was among one of the best drinks I've had in a while. If you can overcome the anemic parking space and inconvenience of having to carry cash, I highly recommend eating here. read more

I am reviewing, specifically, the Seaside location since I have never been to Monterey location. Pleasantly surprised at how delicious and fresh the meals are! My staple appetizer is the the Spring Rolls, large and delish. Their pho is good and nice big portion with all the Viet fixins to mix in. The beef dishes are my favorite something about the marinade makes it unusual and delectable! The lunch crowd gets a little busy, but that is to be expected. The organic tofu rice dish & the stir fried tofu were basically flavorless. The vegetarian sandwich was not nearly as good as the one from Bahn Mi Bar in Marina. Initially my family and loved this restaurant after we first discovered it. The food is decent and prices were inexpensive, but then is got bad. We do both sit in dining and ordering out often, weekly we were eating here, before things starting going downhill for the last 3 months in row. Customer service got slow in store and sloppy, food became constantly inconsistent like missing some items and getting the orders mixed up (this happened several times when ordered out)...but with that said, we loved how close it was to our area and that it was inexpensive, so we kept going back... Until the last straw that broke the camels back so to speak for us, was finding several medium length strands of hair in my husbands beef when we ordered out one evening. That was it for us. No more chances. It is shame that they got lazy, inconsistent, sloppy and took loyal customers for granted. Now we no longer eat here. It is not worth it anymore. read more

We'd eaten here a couple years ago and it was better. We've been to the other location more, but it was packed with no parking so we stopped at the Seaside location. My veggie pho was good, but overall the place wasn't as clean as I remember. Bathroom was pretty bad. Menus and sauces on the table were sticky and gunky. They seemed understaffed, the wait staff. Seemed spread kinda thin over a lot of tables. Mainly because of the cleanliness issues we won't be back. It's also been a year or two since we went to the other Monterey location. Been to this Chopstix a few times now, and this is the second time I've called in but they've run out of ingredients for certain dishes and I didn't find out until I arrived. I even came in later than they suggested to pick up and they still weren't ready. And it was the least busiest I've seen! How does that happen? What's going on in this place? Management needs to get it together, seriously. If the staff picking up the phone doesn't know what they're out of, that's on management. As far as I know, this is the only place in the area where you can get a banh mi. There are a number of Vietnamese restaurants, but no others seem to have it. I think this is mostly due to the fact that no one bakes the bread you need here; it would have to come from San Jose, and that's just a bit too far (though this place may get it from there). For instance, the place in Santa Cruz that has banh mi gets their bread from San Jose. I mean, with some people, you may be able to get away with doing something like putting it on a bolillo, but it's not the same, and it's not going to be a popular item with most people, especially in the diverse ethnic melting pot of Seaside, with its competitive Vietnamese restaurant scene. I love banh mi. It's something I seek out regularly, and is something that I always pick up while in the Bay Area, where they do it really well. I wasn't expecting a lot from the sandwich here, and it wasn't a lot. At the least, it was made correctly. I've been to some far-flung places where it's just totally wrong. The barbecue pork didn't taste quite right, and the bread was different, but it seemed close. I also got some summer rolls, which are the non-shrimp version of the spring rolls. They were supposed to include "grilled meatballs," which was actually sausage. It definitely could have used more mint because all you could taste was the sausage, but it was okay. I think all Vietnamese restaurants should copy Taste of Vietnam's chili & peanut sauce dip. The wife's meal, however, was just bad. She got some sort of pork noodle dish, which was just a chow mein. I had some, and it was pretty gross. The plus here: dirt cheap. With all that food, I think we came out to about $15. They take cards. It's a really nice space at this location. They have free wifi and it's comfortable and clean inside. And the staff were really, overly nice. It's going to be a potential hang out spot for me, I think, but I'll probably just get boba next time. They seem to really push the boba, and they have quite a selection. read more

My review of the food for this place is the same as the one on Munras. The only things that separate this place from the one on Munras is the portion and service. Service at this location is WAY better! They're professional and friendly. Now on to the food...I'm Vietnamese...from Orange County, where the 2nd largest population of Vietnamese people live outside of Viet Nam. I lived about 10 minutes away from Little Saigon and have had the best Vietnamese food both in the United States and Viet Nam. I know what I'm talking about. Chopstix does not serve good Vietnamese food. That being said...it's decent. It's a safe place to get newbies to try Vietnamese food. Trust me. I know. I got my roommate and friends (non-Vietnamese, safe eaters) to try it and they think it's pretty good. The only thing I order here is the Lemon Grass beef with noodles (Bun Bo Xao). It's flavorful and the portions are generous. I would avoid the eggrolls and Vietnamese coffee. This is a good place for those on a budget. Flavors aren't very authentic, but a good introductory course. read more

Wife an I love Vietnamese food. We gave it a try. Oops!! I ordered Pho Ga and my wife ordered spring rolls stir fry shrimp/vegetables. The tea was very weak. Teabag in the pot. The fish sauce ordered with the spring rolls was like water. No taste. My pho ga was OK, no little fried onion bits. My wife's stir fry only had 4 small shrimp. Kind on the CHEAP side. We asked for sugar since there were no packets or glass dispenser, but the waitress brought a tiny plastic sauce holder with/I swear less than a teaspoon in it. I asked for more. They said they weren't serving because they were going to move soon!! Hmmmm.... the prices were good (My wife is a PRACTICAL ASIAN!!). In short, I was "Moving too" and ashamed to say I didn't leave a tip. No parking lot. Had to drive around the block. Unfortunately, go somewhere else. read more

I would not recommend this place and I will not be going back! I found the vietnamese egg rolls to be mediocre. I found the chicken noodle soup (pho) that I ordered to be mild and mediocre as well. I've had much better food. The service was prompt and the staff were friendly. The dishes were dirty and sticky and the restaurant was not very clean. The prices are cheap/affordable so you get what you pay for. A $5.50 pho that tasted pretty bland may be worth it for some, but I absolutely love Oriental/Asian cuisine and I had higher hopes! This is my fave Vietnamese restaurant in Monterey County. The most expensive dish is $8 and I think it's a special pho bowl. Dishes I've ordered are : veggie pho,udon and spring rolls, tofu stir-fry, lemon grass chicken wings, combo and banh mi, as well as BBQ chicken banh mi, shaken beef and the calamari. For drinks, I've ordered taro and lavender milk teas and the watermelon slush. The drinks taste like every other boba place, which is a good thing. A lot of people compare Chopstix to Noodle Bar, but I prefer Chopstix more. I also prefer this Chopstix location to the one by Del Monte Center, because it's renovated and there's more space. read more
