Chopsticks is definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Bangor area. Food is always excellent and the service is wonderful as well. Their hot and sour soup is my absolute favorite-- no other compares! I highly recommend grabbing a bowl while you're there. Also, another one of my favorites are the steamed vegetable dumplings...yum! Another positive is the drinks. They're very reasonably priced and VERY good! Usually when I have a drink at a restaurant I find them hard to enjoy because they're so sweet. This is definitely not the case at chopsticks! They're mixed perfectly! I got food from here around the holidays. I knew they had switched ownership so I had hoped that some of the old problems had been fixed with new ownership. No. I got chicken, rice, and teriyaki beef sticks. My beef sticks were literally inedible. Spoiled, tasted like they were in a freezer for a year or something. Literally the worst taste I've ever tasted from a restaurant. I would say invest in fresh food and quality. I hate giving a bad review anywhere because I know how hard it is as a business owner. We stopped by Chopsticks on our walk home and found that they now offer dine in service. We decided to take advantage and stop in for dinner. My wife and I ordered one of the combination platters. It was a great value considering that normally at other places you can only get rice noodles (Singapore mei fun) as a stand-alone dish. The platter comes with fried rice and an appetizer. The food was not drenched in oil or greasy. The portion was spot on and tasted great. The service was great. The owner and his helper were personable and were genuinely happy that we were there dining with them. The dining room and the restroom were clean. It's a bit of a hidden gem in the Bangor area. I've read the Pad Thai is amazing so I plan on coming back for that when we return for a future visit. read more

Pretty disappointed in our experience. My husband and I walked in and ordered the orange chicken, than we're told it doesn't come with rice so we added that on. We also got fried pork dumplings. The meal was way more expensive than I was hoping for. Our order came out quickly though and we took it back to our hotel to eat. It was hot but the food was just lack luster. The orange chicken had very little flavor and tough pieces of chicken. The dumplings were honestly disgusting with some kind of mystery meat inside. The pork fried rice tasted so weird. I have had so many types of pork fried rice from various places and they all tasted similar and delicious. The pork was so hard to eat and the rice was too cooked. The sauce or whatever goes on it just tasted nasty i can't even think how to describe it, it was super off and just did not taste normal. Oh, Chopsticks, how do I love you? Let me count the ways! a) We came here first for Thanksgiving dinner, 2018. For the 8+ times we've come here since then, we have been *consistently* amazed by how good the food is. You're probably used to how the crab rangoon, wonton soup, and other traditional American Chinese restaurant fare is at other Chinese restaurants. When you come to Chopsticks, all of these things are made fresh and are on a completely different level. Did I mention how lucky Bangor is to have a restaurant like this? I've had a massive selection of items off their menu- they have amazing chicken dumplings, crab rangoon, wonton soup, pad Thai, curry duck, curry fish, and oh, if you haven't tried their spicy shrimp you are SERIOUSLY missing out. Have their spicy shrimp. It'll make your day. b) The people who work here are all so amazingly nice. The chef is first-class, he knows how good he is, and he loves it when you let him know (We told him his was the best Chinese restaurant north of Boston!). Amy, who serves your table most nights, is such a sweetheart, as are her daughters Jenny and Zeeny. The guy who does their deliveries is such a sweetie as well. You should see how he interacts with Zeeny. c) Not only are the people who work here so great, they're also great if you're, say, gay or lesbian or trans. There is no other restaurant in Bangor that is so wonderful and respectful and genuinely nice to me and my partner as Chopsticks. Other places have made us feel bad and disrespected- at Chopsticks we can always count on a hearty welcome, good treatment, nice food, and leaving at the end of the night feeling like valued guests. We found this place via yelp while passing through Bangor. Wow, it was awesome! We eat "american chinese food" on a very regular basis, this was some of the best we've had in ages. The hot & sour soup was some of the best my wife has ever had, real pepper flakes in it, serious heat. The garlic sauce had a great flavor, and actually had garlic pieces in it. They had brown rice (whole grain, not fried), even though i didn't see it on menu... very glad I asked! It was perfect chopstick texture, not undercooked like a lot of places that assume you are using fork and spoon to eat it. My beef and pea pods was exactly what it should have been. Tender beef that actually tasted like beef, not drowning in brown sauce. The pea pods were crispy and flavorful, not wilted or mushy. Ginger ice cream to finish off with... too good to resist! Very friendly staff, obviously popular with the locals, many knew both the server and the chef by name when they came out. I think we saw the chef at least a couple times while eating, she delivered some of the plates when a large table ordered, and stopped by to check on how everything was instead of just going back to the kitchen. Slightly off the beaten path and a bit dive-y, edging on artsy (brick walls, intricate black ceiling, wainscoting, nice photographs and artwork, but there's also a fluorescent Bud Light sign in the front window...). We each ordered one of their combination plates that came with an entree, rice and a choice of appetizer for about $10. The service was pleasant, the food arrived ridiculously fast and tasted good. I took a friend for lunch today for our first visit. We both got lunch specials. My friend is a vegetarian & asked for a recommendation. Our server was very helpful and offered to make one of their signature chicken dishes with tofu instead. I ordered the broccoli & beef. I got egg drop soup which was delicious & my friend got the wonton soup which, as pictured, was quite full of fresh ingredients. Our meals were brought to the table quickly, I was impressed! As we were eating I bit into something very hard. I hadn't even said anything & our server was by my side asking me what happened. I told her & she immediately took the plate to the kitchen. A few minutes later she returned & explained/showed me it was undercooked rice. She was very apologetic & not at all snarky. She also brought me a new plate & even added some barbecue chicken. I must say it was delicious! Just enough smokey flavor & juicy too! When the check came she had taken my meal off the bill. I'm impressed. Good food for a great price! My sister lives in the neighborhood so we walked over, picked it up the take out and walked home. You can eat in as well, there's a few tables and booths, not a bad little set up. The lunch menu is a good option, cheaper than some of the regular items, plus you get pork fried rice and a choice of an appetizer or soup. My sister told me there's a new cook who can cook special orders if it's not on the menu. The menu does state that they add MSG to their meals, but you can order without. I like this idea very much! I definitely will be returning when I'm at my sister's house again. My only slightly negative opinion is the egg drop soup didn't taste like what I'm used to, but still good none the less. read more

We're new to Bangor and we wanted Chinese food that has vegetarian options beyond just vegetables. Where we moved from, it was common to find Chinese restaurants make their own fake meat and have a vegetarian section that was on par with the rest of the menu. While not quite there, this was definitely close! I read one that Chinese food will be different depending on which part of the country you're in. This is definitely the case. In the Philadelphia area, wontons have meat inside, but these don't. These are just the dough, fried. Still really great though! Hot mustard is not part of the regular condiment selection here. The scallion pancakes are a bit fluffier. Overall though, the food is really tasty and the staff is very sweet. Definitely recommended. read more

My son selected this restaurant, so to be supportive, I said okay. As soon as I walked in, I wanted to walk out. The place smells like an ashtray. The waitperson was annoyed when we hadn't made our mind up what to order in one minute. She asked us if we have any questions. My son then asked a question, and she snapped back at him like he was stupid. It was only after we ordered our food that we were told it was take out only. The big sign over the door says "Dine in". So then we sat in a booth in the restaurant for 20 minutes for our food to arrive, then they made us leave. Didn't make sense. We ate the food at a park in the rain. The food was almost okay but the chicken tasted and smelled like boiled chicken and the dumplings seemed to be from Walmart. Not a good experience. read more

We ordered take out while visiting family and were less than impressed. The cost of our order was kind of outrageous and had a delivery fee tacked on top of it. The crab Rangoon's were some of the worst I've had (and tiny!) they had next to no filling and were flavorless. The chicken fingers were incredibly greasy and our chicken teriyaki was extremely dry. I saw all these positive Yelp reviews and sadly Chopsticks was a let down. We figured that Maine would not be able to do Mexican but thought it could handle Chinese. We were wrong. The food was all very bland and flavorless (aside from the sesame chicken) and our server was not attentive at all. Heck, the menu even says there is MSG in the food and that couldn't even bring out the flavor. Chopsticks is some of the best chinese food in Bangor. They deliver, but if you live within a half-mile of them and order there often, they will learn your name and yell at you for being lazy (in a friendly way) if regularly request delivery. It is also inexpensive. Chopsticks is one of the few places where you can get non-greasy chinese food in Bangor. I personally don't like chinese food, so only giving it 4 stars may be under-rating it. It is certainly far better than Oriental Jade. read more

I've been looking forward for a long time and the first visit happens on the Fourth of July. Maybe this is part of the reasons why. A long three day holiday (for many four days), Saturday, Sunday and of course, Monday the Fourth. So, Tuesday Chopsticks is closed Tuesdays. The restaurant was slow and the owner was running the show, going through the motions. I don't know, maybe she's was just tired. My husband loved his spicy shrimp so much, he ordered it both times AND took home an order each time. I enjoyed everything I had. Delicately spiced wonton soup full of fresh vegetables, buddha's delight, homestyle tofu. The spring rolls are the tastiest we've ever eaten. The vegetables were all crispy and lightly sauced and spiced. The new owners are very accommodating, and even re-created a pepper mix my husband had been missing. I love their food to begin with. I placed an order to pick up and made a mistake by ordering chop suey when I intended to order Lo Mein. I called back still unaware that it was my mistake, they soon cleared that up. All they asked was for the difference in the price to exchange it. When I got there they saw it was just my 2 year old and I so they brought the food out to me. When I tried to give the Mgr a $10 for a $1.60 difference he refused so we compromised with 5. The food was your average, so-so American-Chinese. I placed a take out of appetizers to bring home for a small gathering. When the cook saw my order, he began laughing and made very rude and inappropriate comments in Chinese, speculating on whether or not I planned to really eat all the food myself. Bets were placed and a woman from the back came to the bar and asked how many people would be eating because they didn't want to waste extra condiments. You mean the condiments I paid for? As the cook hung on the kitchen door listening for my answer, I told her four people. He lost the bet. Because the foods I chose were all finger-foods and I was bringing the order home, I declined utensils. This elicited derogatory muttering from the lady putting together the take out bag about Americans not using chopsticks--after all it was only the name of the restaurant, blah, blah, blah. From that point, things went further down hill as the woman returned to the kitchen, scolding the cook who then launched into a loud, sexist tirade. The cook followed the woman back to the dining room, continuing to shout in Chinese about the business as she handed me my order. I could still hear him shouting as I was outside, getting into my car. My assessment: run-of-the-mill American-Chinese food; incredibly poor customer service; utter disdain for the customer-base. read more

Good, but not spectacular. The food quality is good although, considering the prices, the portion size wasn't quite what I expected. I can't say I'd never go back there, but probably not frequently. It is the little things that you take for granted that you sometimes notice when they're lacking. For instance, they have the silverware in plastic containers on the tables rather than having place settings already made up. They didn't provide a fortune cookie at the end of the meal. I don't know if this is their standard practice or just an oversight (and I can live without the cookie anyhow), it just seemed odd. Again, especially considering the prices. Given the other choices in the area, I would think they would try to do something a little extra to earn the couple of extra bucks being charged. Overall, not a terrible experience by any means; but they didn't really do anything to make it stand out. The waitress/owner was very friendly and outgoing. Finally, one last thing. It didn't affect my experience, but it seems a little bit unusual that they have such limited hours on the weekends. One would think Saturdays and Sundays would present opportunities for added business...but there are other places that open prior to 3 PM. read more
