Two words: cottage pie. Do yourself a favor and get this masterpiece next time you swing through Bangor! It's light but also thick, with a nice tangy gravy that brings all the filling components together under a crispy cheese and potato crust. Additionally, the service was excellent during our visit, so even though their system was down at the time, the staff's hustle and kindness completely made up for that. As for the ambience, it's your standard Irish pub with traditional reels and jigs playing unobtrusively through the speakers, wood and earth tones all around, and vintage rugby keepsakes behind the bar. The worst french onion soup I've ever had. It was in a "bread bowl". The bread bowl literally tasted like a toasted hot dog bun. There was no broth for this so called soup. The waitstaff is attentive and even brought a dish of ice water for the dog when we were there in the warmer months. The food is consistent, delicious and reasonably priced. I just finished eating here. I ordered chicken tenders nothing fancy. They came out pretty burnt, but whatever, I just ate around the charcoal parts. We were out with family and the place was busy, so I wasn't about to complain or send them back. About halfway through the meal, our waiter (a small man wearing overalls) came by and asked if we needed anything. I very clearly asked for a cup of ranch. He said, "Okay, I'll get that for you." Fast forward about 15 minutes... no ranch. At that point it was obvious he forgot. Someone I was eating with politely mentioned it to him while heading to the bathroom, just to jog his memory. He eventually came back with the ranch, but instead of just handing it over, he got confrontational and said, "Why didn't you ask me when I asked the table if they needed anything else?" I replied, "I'm sorry, I definitely did." The rest of the table immediately backed me up and said I 100% asked. His response? "Mmmm... no." Then he walked away and literally went outside. At that point we were just confused more than anything. Shortly after, he had another server take over our table presumably because he didn't want to come back after embarrassing himself. The weird part was he still had other tables right next to us, so he spent the rest of the time awkwardly pacing around waiting on these tables while avoiding eye contact while we giggled at him because the whole situation was so silly. Getting that bent out of shape over a ranch cup is so weird to me. Overall, I previously would have recommended this place for the atmosphere alone it has a cool Irish vibe. The food is just okay, but to be fair, I've only tried one of their burgers and the chicken tenders, so take that for what it's worth. Lastly, if you get the same server I did, tread carefully when asking for more ranch. read more

We live about 30-mins outside of Bangor and come into town often to shop, eat and such. That said, we've rarely walked around the main "downtown," where the specialty shops, stores, bars and restaurants merge into an attractive setting, overall. Being plant-based can make for a bit of a struggle in this town, and Paddy Murphy's Irish Pub would not necessarily be a place we'd think would have some vegan options; but, it did! So, we hauled the carnivores to Paddy's! :D We arrived when the opened, and got us one of the outdoor tables, overlooking the plaza. We had a nice, young waitress who took care of us with drinks and food orders. It was a pleasant late-morning with the city still waking up. Unfortunately, as we waited, the peace was shattered by a troubled woman crying and yelling profanities right across the street. It made for an unenlightening experience, though no fault of Paddy's, of course. The police finally arrived to calm her down, as they appeared to know her. Still, though.... Anyway, there was a particular dish that we REALLY wanted to try; however, we were told they were out of it. Bloop!! So, I ended-up ordering one of their vegan burgers. (We were told it was "Uncut" plant-based meats, which we weren't familiar with.) It was good; chips were good; beer was good. (My recollection was that everyone thought their meals were good/very good.) Service, however, despite the nice gal, was noticeably absent. There was no coming around to see how things were going, how's the meals. (The table of guys next to us had a waitress that was all about service! Ours was considerably lackluster in comparison. Oh, well....) All this said, we probably will give Paddy Murphy's Irish Pub another shot in the near future, especially to try that dish that wasn't available. The cooks and staff were very bad at hygiene. Cooks were using bottles of sauce as boobs. Seen flipping off a guy on the side walk and spitting on him for holding a sign. The kitchen looks nasty can't say anything about the food as seeing all this made my wife and I go elsewhere. The owner however defended the cook who assaulted the citizen. A tad bit disappointed... This looks like it could be a really fun, Irish Pub. The decor was a traditional Irish pub. The beer selection was good. The service was OK, but you could tell they were short staffed - the waiter was really nice but not attentive enough. The food Lacked the TLC needed in a place like this... we had their big pretzel, which was overcooked and lacked salt, so it was crunchy - not good - I had the patty melt with onion rings, which both were overcooked. Baby girl had a buger and fries, which the buger was over cooked, but the fries were perfect. The beer was delicious and cold. I had a wonderfully Celtic evening at Paddy Murphys Irish Pub yesterday with my bi-curious friend, Kenneth. A lovely woman named Ashley waited on us with grace, making us feel not just like customers of Paddy Murphy's, but like family. We sat at a hightop table on the outdoor patio where we were treated with the best of both worlds: live jazz from the inside of the restaurant, spilling softly through the open window screens and slipping sweetly through cracks of Paddy's aged wooden doors, and an elderly performance of the percussive arts across the street. Both musics, while vastly different, homogenized beautifully and molded into each other pleasantly, like when you spill a jar of mayonnaise onto a computer keyboard and the substance slowly but surely finds and fills each groove. We were first given big bowl's of Clam Chowder. The chowder was very decent. It was accompanied by 4 bags of oyster crackers, which Ashley dropped off as she sang "Oooyster craaackers" and did jazz hands. . We slopped down the chowder with haste and enjoyment before our next course of Caesar Salad. The Caesar was served with chicken in a bread bowl. The chicken was seasoned gorgeously and it was perfectly tender. The salad itself was generously dressed and extremely tasty. The bread bowl was the only part of my experience in which I felt underwhelmed. And you know me... I would never complain about bread in any form or fashion but I was unimpressed to say the least. After the Caesars, Kenneth and I rushed to the Bangor Mall Cinemas 10 and watched the new Ethan Coen movie "Honey Don't!". It was enjoyable but the plot was kind of all over the place and there was that scene about her dad and what not and they never really did anything with it. Went for lunch yesterday. Been wanting to try it for a while. Loved the atmosphere, church pew seating and a full bar. Started with a nice cold Guinness, a shot of Tilurmadue, the hubs had Lunch IPA (which was really good). Ordered Wings to share. Their Paddy's "buffalo" sauce was super unique. Kind of sauce you could put on an old leather shoe. Blue cheese tasted homemade. Chicken looked delicious and I believe smoked. Husband had the Celtic Warrior burger. He said it was awesome. Everything was in just the right portions and blended well. I had the fish in chips. The fish was super fresh and the beer batter was super crispy. My favorite fish dish since I moved to Maine 5 years ago. The French fries were crispy, and the salt tasted a bit like smoked salt. It is the little things that made a big difference. We were so impressed we took and order to go. Husband got the Irish stew (very tasty, and although the container was just normal soup sized, it was all meat). I got the patty melt and champ (gave my husband the potatoes). It was delicious even reheated. One recommendation, if you like your hamburgers rare, get medium. The char on my husband's medium cooked hamburger really added something special to the sandwich, where are my patty melt was missing that. We recently travelled through Bangor around lunch time on Saturday. After bookmarking numerous Bangor restaurants and coffee shops on my Yelp App, I picked the area of Downtown Bangor with the greatest concentration of dots on my Yelp map and we parked nearby. Some of my bookmarked choices were closed, too busy or not kid friendly enough. Although I didn't have it bookmarked, Paddy Murphy's ("PM") looked like the best area option for a family with a picky 9 year old because people seemed to be having a pleasant time in the cool outdoor seating area, and the menu presented many options. The inside of the restaurant was a little rough around the edges in parts. I posted a pic of the draft beer list. I've learned from my recent vacation dining experiences that I have to adjust my expectations about what good service looks like in a post-heart-of-the-pandemic environment. A common refrain I heard in Maine (not necessarily at PM) is that restaurants can't fill open positions and they're short-staffed. Therefore, I'll note that it took longer to get our food than I would have expected two years ago, but I won't factor that into my Yelp Score. We enjoyed sitting outside and played an epic game of Uno to pass the time. Our interactions with our server were friendly. I ordered the "Cottage Pie", which was like a souped-up Sheppard's pie. It consisted of seasoned ground beef and veggies such as corn, peas, onion and green beans, and it was topped with a mashed potato and cheddar crust. It was good. The seasoned beef mixture had good texture and flavor. The veggies color-splashed the dish with yellow and green, and provided fresh juicy flavor and contrasting textures. The mashed potato crust was well executed and tasty. The Cottage Pie was served with Brussel Sprouts. They seemed braised, boiled or steamed (rather than roasted or sautéed, which is what I like), and therefore, they were too mushy for my tastes. My wife ordered the Street Corn Salad with Crispy Chicken. She thought that it was pretty good. My son ordered the kid's Kraft Mac and Cheese. I sincerely want to thank Paddy's for offering this for kids, who often Just want things how they're used to. They don't need a Baked 8 Cheese Mac with a Buttered Bread Crumb Crust (and don't get me started on Kid's Menu Grilled Cheese made with something besides American). We also ordered a plate of grilled Irish soda bread as an App. It was well-executed and very enjoyable. For an on-the-spot pick, Paddy Murphy's was pretty good. Paddy Murphy's is definitely an Irish Pub! Not ins that poor way corporations try to hype things, this place is run by an Irishman. The staff is all hard-working locals, and the surrounding community hangs out here not just for food and drink but to see friends, neighbors, and some entertainment. It's a nice community place, and love the past 10 years I have always felt welcome here. If we are downtown and want a good lunch, we come here and always order too much food. I wish I could stay downtown and spend a full evening here with these fine people. Then trundle off to my bed and have a satisfying sleep. The downside is I will never be a regular here, which is my loss 'cause I will never have a beer mug with my name on it. Beer selections are local good taps with a few classics (i.e., Guinness and some Irish red beer) thrown in. Wine is a passable selection. The whiskey and cocktail selection is good, and the bartenders know how to make a cocktail right. Food at first glance seems typical, but I will tell you it has its adventurous corners. No matter how finicky I feel, rare for me, I can always find something I would be happy to eat. Yes, the burgers are outstanding and juicy. I have brought many a person or small group here, and most ask me if the place is still going. Solid place, that is a must if you're in downtown Bangor. Ok, so Paddy Murphy's is my favorite Irish pub. And I loooove a good Irish pub. When we spent a few years living all over, and I missed this place so much. The onion rings were good, battery and crispy at the same time. The wings were good, nothing to write home about but good. The poutine, now let me tell you! The poutine is the best I've had in Maine so far, and I've been on that search. Flavor! It's not some boring generic brown gravy but a strong and amazing Guinness gravy. The cheese is real curds, and they use their classic house fries which are always seasoned. I have dairy sensitivities and can't really eat dairy, but I threw that out the window for the poutine. Lastly, I ordered soup and salad for myself. The salad was just a generic side salad. But the Hungarian mushroom soup is also a long time favorite. I barely dented my meal. So I didn't even touch it. I'm taking it home with the rest of the pub crawl to eat later. But I know it's good. If you haven't been to Paddy Murphy's, you need to go. Their menu is bigger than it used to be, unlike most restaurants that have sized down to to Covid. I can't wait to go back and try something different next time.
