When I moved to Chicago, every time I drove by this place and smelled the burgers, I thought to myself, I bet this place tastes better than most the fast food joints out there. About a couple years back, I finally picked up food (cheeseburger) and for being a hole in the wall, it was pretty amazing. I don't know why it took 2 years to visit this place again, but we finally decided to order delivery. The good? They were pretty quick. Unfortunately that was the only positive. Even though the directions said to ring the top doorbell, the delivery guy called and when we went downstairs, we didn't see anyone. I guess he was honking his horn because he couldn't be bothered to get out of the car. He finally got out to give us our food and seemed pretty annoyed (note: we did tip). Then, to make the experience even worse, the food was pretty horrific. Both the cheeseburger and turkey burger were severely overcooked. The bacon on the cheeseburger was so hard, I was afraid I was going to crack a tooth. This place is getting 2 stars because of my first experience. I have eaten here a couple of times and let me just say HELL YES CHOPPERS! This place rules, period. My friend and I got the Chop Pak which consists of a double cheeseburger that is a legit freshly made cheeseburger, fries and coleslaw. Bang, perfection and all for only $5.95. We also had to try out some of their shakes, I went with the Cinnamon Apple Pie shake which was honestly the best shake I have had in years. I am 100% sure any person who buys that shake will die and go to milkshake heaven just like I did. It actually had chunks of apple, yum. My friend tried their S'mores shake that I think is a special item and isn't always for grabs. Of course that one was delicious too but I definitely preferred mine. The inside of the place has a ton of candy machines, as well as cute little knick knacks you can buy with the change you have collecting dust in your car or pocket, while you wait for your order. I've been coming to Chopper's specifically for their yellowfin tuna steak sandwich since they were on Clark Street fifteen years ago. The oreo malt is also a frequent indulgence despite my bowelogically crippling battle with lactose intolerance (appetizing, no?). They also have the best freaking cole slaw in the world. The only thing that makes it better is dipping the overwhelming portion of fries they give you into it. Lastly, I am both charmed and disturbed by the fact that several of the employees recognize me and address me by name years after I stopped coming here so often. read more

I have been by this a billion times during my 5-year residency in Chicago, and thought I might take some out-of-towners with me to try it out. The food was of good quality compared to other greasy spoons. The service was fast. It made for an ok lunch. However, The manager needs to have his head examined for the behavior I saw while dining. First of all, the manager was sitting at one of the dining tables- not a problem. But, when it was time for us to step up to the counter he shouted across the restaurant to squeeze his "personal" order in. He had a strong new yorky accent- and I was very caught off guard as why this man was yelling (and I mean yelling) across the restaurant. Furthermore- everytime an order goes on- the restaurant fills up with smoke from the charbroiled burgers. If this isn't normal- it certainly seemed as though it was- as no one but us paid any attention to it. Also- said manager felt the need to refill one of the numerous candy machines while we were dining next to it. This involved moving the gigantic furniture- which was shoved up against my mother's chair while she was dining. On the way out- the manager stared at us as though we were thieves. No thank you, no acknowledgement. Not until this mans behavior came to my attention was I even going to discredit the bathroom facilities. They were in the kitchen- not a problem. But they were old, delapidated, and musty. The employees who served us should be running this place. Our orders were done in seconds, the employees were friendly and smiled. They seemed happy to serve us- yet annoyed by their boss' behavior and it became quite obvious that he was a "money man" and not someone who had a clue about running a restaurant. What a shame that a place like this has to bite the dust because the responsible party isn't responsible. Get a grip guy! read more

I think my burger palate is maturing and my latest tasting was from Choppers. I've had the fries here previously but popped in for dinner to get the full experience. The Choppak (a.k.a. the grown-up happy meal) consists of a double cheeseburger, fries and coleslaw. Top it off with one of their shakes, chocolate, and you've got yourself one caloric mountain of yum. Several excellent reasons to return: - Generous portions. You could skip a meal after eating here. - Easy on the pocketbook. $4.95 for the Choppak. - Fast. In and out in 7 minutes. For a real burger. - Yum. Need I say more? You'll be satisfied. Now I do have one small grip and that's the bun. With as much meat, cheese, condiments and grilled onions as is piled on this thing, you'd think the bun would be bigger and stronger!! This bun wouldn't survive with a McDonald's patty on it let alone the big burgers they piled on. I may just have to pack my own bun for the next trip over. read more

Up until about two weeks ago, never really was a fan of this place...Now I feel like Jack from LOST, "WE HAVE TO GO BACK!" Decided to go away from the burgers and try this BBQ Rib sandwich, this changed everything. Think about how a McRib tasted in the 80's and that's basically what is going on here. They give you a huge hunk of boneless pork patty slathered with real tasty BBQ sauce, throw on some grilled onions, toss a pickle or two on the bottom of a Torano roll and dig in. It's real messy, so forget about being green and grab about 45 of the little lunch room napkins to clean your face off! You'll get a ton of steak fries with your sandwich; which before this trip were kinda thick and not so good. This time they were salted and cooked perfect. Inside you might want to tell them to crack a door or something because when I went in, it looked like the smoke monster just went through there. Side note: They have an interesting array of soft drinks that you might want to check out. It's sort of tastes like Dollar Store Cola and then there is something called Green-Lime. Maybe get a shake or malt instead, they are gigantic and awesome and free of bummy tummy kickback. read more

Having Choppers nearby is both the biggest blessing and biggest curse in my life. They have phenomenal customer service, are the fastest fast food joint around, and oh is the food delish. Unfortunately, it's not exactly healthy. When the guy behind the counter recognized me the other day, I realized it was time to cut back. My favorite thing to order is the cheese dog, which comes with fries...which you can dip in the cheese sauce. All for under $4. I also recommend the chicken fingers, burgers, and shakes. I had the chop pak and the polish to go. Both came with fries and total came out to be around $8.50 or so. The fries: I'm not sure if they can be called fries due to the size...They taste like fries but sizewise they firmly belong in the potato wedge category. I kid you not - but there was a godzilla fry that was a little less than nine inches long! Fries were seasoned well, but just a tad dry. Polish: disappointed that there were no poppy seeds, but the bun was steamed and soft. Polish was charred and flavorful. A little bit longer than your average polish; there was overhanging meat on both ends of the bun (that sounded weird) Hamburger: Yummy. Soft bun and it was larger than I had expected it to be. Grilled onions were great, and the gooey cheese melted all over the patties reminds me that I should hit the gym shortly. Overall, great food and decent prices. I haven't had a chance to try out their shakes yet, but will do so the next time I am in the hood. Definitely give Choppers a try if you haven't already. read more

Ok. I was sick as a dog. Could hardly breathe. So i ordered Choppers for delivery. Had a cheeseburger, fries and a large milkshake. The milkshake happened to be more entertaining than the food. Perhaps because it was soothing my esophagus. But, i did not enjoy my burger. Yes it was sloppy- but the meat wasn't that impressive. Ya know I'm no stranger to a burger joint- It may be that my taste buds were just so diluted with snot- Perhaps the luscious chocolate milkshake was impeding on the savor of the burger- it's all very possible. I was expecting more from this burger joint is all. Now its got me wondering if it's more of the experience at location that influences taste? Is it the trip of being at Choppers as opposed to ordering delivery that renders 4-5 stars? I will give Choppers another try in good health. read more

Gross. Bland. Possibly palatable if you like food that all tastes like cardboard. Yelp, you have led me astray! I stopped in when we were in the neighborhood because the yelp reviews were good. They lied. We ordered the fish and chips, a milkshake (the only thing that tasted like anything), and their "famous" Chopak since it came so highly recommended. 1) it's quite obvious their fish is just some cheap frozen thing they toss in the fryer. It was really, REALLY bland. It tasted like used fryer grease and nothing else. No seasoning. Not even salt. And they were so soggy. On top of that, the lake of tartar sauce they serve it with also managed to taste like nothing. It was also quite possibly bad. And somehow the "coleslaw" was almost exactly like the tartar sauce in both appearance and taste. The burger was also pathetic. Another obviously cheap frozen flavorless item they tossed on the grill. It's near impossible to mess up a burger, but boy did they manage to come really close. Sadly, the fries followed suit with the rest of the meal. Bland and soggy. Not even salt and pepper could fix them. The "milkshake" isn't actually a milkshake, either. It's soft serve with toppings mixed in. All in all, our trip there was a waste of money. $30 for "food" that may have actually been worse than what I would have gotten at McDonalds. I have to give the price of this place a 5/5. Their single patty burger was only $2.99 with all trimmings (pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mustard, and mayo) and it was quite delicious. Yay! Their cleanliness is a 2/5. What made it worst was that I just bought new Vans and my heart sank when I entered the restaurant finding the floors were those old restaurant tiles dated back to the 1950's and it was sticky...darn. This is one of my favorite places in the city! If you want a burger, fries and an awesome shake come to Choppers. The amount of food you get and the guys behind the counter are amazing. You get fast, courteous service and a great meal for super cheap. If you don't like this place you don't like burgers and fries. You can actually see them cooking so you know it's clean, they have nothing to hide here so you know you can trust the food. Being new to the area ( North), I am usually (and temporarily) at my boyfriends mercy when it comes to places to get fast yet good food. Yesterday, he brought home Grilled Chicken Chopper Meals with Strawberry shakes. Oh. My. God. Let me just say, I'm not even a "grilled chicken sandwich" type of girl but WOW! The meal came with fries ( and not the wimpy, limp version) and some very, very tasty Cole slaw. Ingredients were fresh, prices are good and the SHAKE, you ask?? Drool break...... K, I'm back. Last night I had the best milkshake I've ever had, not from an old fashioned diner, not from a fancy pants new diner, but from Choppers. I stopped there on a whim to get my boyfriend a strawberry shake. I got a chocolate banana one for myself. You can mix and match any of the available flavors to create your dream shake, so if you're craving cinnamon apples, peanut butter, and chocolate altogether, you'd be able to mix all those flavors up here. As for food options, they didn't seem to have a lot for myself since I only eat poultry from the meat group. This is a burger joint, so the usual greasy spoon appetizer fare is offered: fried cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, french fries. They did have a Mediterranean Turkey Burger which I will try the next time I go here, though the girl working the register wasn't quite sure what made it Mediterranean. I never used to crave burgers...Choppers definitely changed that! Like most of my favorite eateries, Choppers was an accidental discovery! I walked into Choppers not knowing what to expect...we were just looking for a cheap, filling, and quick lunch. Since Choppers had a small parking area where our run-down (is there any other kind?!) U-haul rental wouldn't look too out of place, it seemed like our best option. The interior bordered on kitschy and tacky...but who cares...it's just a burger joint! I was in the mood for chili one day so I decided to eat at Choppers. Ordered chili with cheese and onion along with a pizza puff, meatball sandwhich and a quad burger to take home. Overall everything was rather meh. Meatballs on the meatball sandwhich were huge, but it was kinda bland. I was disappointed in the quad burger though. Even though this thing was a behemoth, you can tell they don't clean the grill because all the patties tasted like soot. The lettuce and stuff on the burger was all soggy, the bread was thin and just as soggy as the lettuce. It was just a terribly prepared burger. Pizza puff was the exact same puff you find at every other restaurant in the hood even though they were rather extravagant in the description so I thought it was freshly made even though it clearly was just one of those freezer bought ones. Chili was fine, nice thick onion slices and thick strings of cheddar cheese. They threw in 2 packets of oyster crackers as well. Everything was pretty cheap so I shouldn't have expected much. "Chopper" is French for greasy, but delicious, burger. My BF and I each had a Choppak, which consists of a double cheeseburger (with ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, grilled onions, tomato, and lettuce), fries, and cole slaw. Really like Choppers! The burgers are great and they give you A LOT of food. The burger comes with fries and slaw as well. The shakes are KILLER! The create your own shake is a great customization option and something that I wish more places had. They have a lot of options that can lead to some great combinations. Don't expect to be blown away, you can pretty much expect that this is a greasy spoon burger joint that doesn't do anything particularly GREAT but it does a lot of things good (with the exception of the shakes, those are GREAT). The prices are fair and delivery is quick so that should get it at least 3/5. read more

Last week I ordered from them on grubhub and they never showed up (Grubhub did a great job of making it right) and just last night we walked in at 9:40pm only to be told "we're closed." I came for the milkshakes, and I stayed for everything else! I love buying the strawberry or Oreo milkshakes. Every once in a while, I mix two flavors for optimum flavor. Haha. The review! I already mentioned that I only came for milkshakes, but here's my total experience. We needed a quick lunch before going to watch some chick flick, and choppers was on the way. Choppers burgers are SO BAD for you but SO GOOD at the same time. I was definitely not disappointed during my first visit. I recommend the Choppak for your first experience. The Choppak ($5.59) is known as the "happy meal for adults," and I agree that this meal has replaced my guilty stomach with a happy stomach. :D It comes with a double beef and double cheese burger with all the trimmings, and they definitely do not skimp you on the trimmings. Also the portions of the thick-steak-cut fries are HUGE, and the coleslaw is great and seems fresh. To top off this massive meal, you have to order the milkshake ($3.39 reg) where you create your own combination of flavors that your exploding heart desires. I miss their Chopburgers which are huge and greasy and exactly what a burger should be, along with their huge cheese steak fries - their milkshakes are also really good, too - If you're really hungry - maybe you should try the Quad. Their fried mushrooms/zucchini is fabulous. Have you tried a quad? I'm always tempted to but always scared of the heart attack that may follow. Oooooo, I love their shakes! Especially the Apple-Cinnamon ones! The thick steak fries with golden, crispy outsides and mushy, warm insides...sometimes with gooey marigold cheese on top, are always right. The Chop Pak - double cheese with fries and slaw served up in a compartmentalized Styrofoam - is probably the best buy on the menu. But the hot dog, Chicago-style all the way, comes out looking like a wedding photo it's so gorgeous. You know, I had been scared to go into this place for years, content with the likes of Byron's and Muskie's. But I was at Dutch Bike Co. on Armitage when I got a shake hankerin' that could not be quelled. I asked them what was their favorite shake and they said "Choppers." The rest is history. So thanks, fellas at DBC. I did not purchase a bike from you, but you changed my life in a small but great way by leading me to that checkered and greasy haven that I have come to crave. read more
