Chopper's is a great alternative between the big 3 fast food joints, and the higher end burger places. Char broiled is the way to go most of the time for a burger. The "Choppak," is their best seller. It's a hearty double cheeseburger with the usual trimmings. Buns are much better than most places, as they are lightly toasted, but still retain enough moisture. The fries are huge steak fries, yum. The shakes are thick and delicious. The downside is they are not hand dipped, but soft serve instead. They're still good though. The cole slaw needs work. It's way too creamy and doesn't have that sweet, nor tangy flavor that a good cole slaw should. The Choppak and fries will run you $6.50 sans drink plus tax. Please make the cole slaw better. read more

We were out doing errands and got hungry, so we stopped in for the first time. Small diner atmosphere. Good sized menu and generous portions. I got the Benny Burger, a triple meat burger with lots of cheese and gf got the Chop Pak which is a double burger with steak fries and cole slaw. She couldn't finish half of it and we split the sides. The burgers also have a slight crisp due to burning at the edges. I liked it, but made the burger seem more salty than it should. Also ordered a chocolate shake, but we got an Oreo shake. Not sure if that's what they considered chocolate, was still very good, just not what I ordered or expected. LOTS of food for under $20. NOT a lot of parking at this place. Awkward placement of spaces makes getting in and out difficult, especially when other customers park crooked in their car and are just sitting there eating and watching you try to back out without hitting them. I peel off three patties and enjoy the double cheeseburger..... and have three patties left over for a do it yourself burger. The meat is grilled perfectly and it's not a greasy gut bomb. The bun is bakery style and holds up reasonably well. Lettuce & tomato seem fresh as well. For $7.95, it's the best value in town. Been hearing about this place from a friend of mines. Finally stopped by there today. When I first got there, the place kind of reminded me of "Checkers" from back in the days. I like the type of food they serv. Burgers, Pizza Puffs, Cheese Fries, Hot dogs, Polish. Fast food on the cheap. The best way to describe the type of food would be "Stoner Heaven". I stupidly ordered an Italian Beef, I should've known better then to order a beef sandwich at a place like this. But I havent had a beef sandwich for awhile and I was craving it. The sandwich was barely edible, it was terribly salty. I did not end up finishing it. I know my toilets gonna love me tonight. I also had the cheesefries, the sauce was ok, but the fries were actually very good. The strawberry milkshake I had wasn't too bad. My buddy has their double burger with coleslaw and fries for $4.95. BEWARE THE BONELESS RIB SANDWICH! Ate here yesterday in the afternoon with my dad. My dad got the beef combo and I got the boneless rib. Now I wanna start off by saying the coleslaw tasted really watery, and was pretty bad. Not to mention it was the smallest dollop possible. The steak fries (or whatever the thick cut fries are called. Like Red Robins steak fries) were really good, THICC, and extremely hot and fresh. Now the RIB. My god it exceeded my expectations. It was pretty big! It came out pretty messy though so I'd advise asking for extra napkins or less sauce, depending on what kind of person you are. The best part was the grill taste left on the patty. Think a McRib but probably twice the size-ish and a good bit of that fiery grill taste. Love that! read more

The double cheeseburgers have a really good char grilled taste but were a little dry. But the cheese on them was great. Also had a tamale, which was only like $1.69 and, though it's probably not an authentic tamale I really liked the flavor. I was really impressed with the milk shake. So thick you really need a spoon to "drink" it and they have like 10 different flavors. It's hard to find a mocha shake so I was excited that they had them. And the small one, which is $3.99, was actually quite large. I think it makes more sense to go here than to go to one of the big chains. read more

Single reason I went here was to put my body through the stress test of taking down the QUAD BURGER. The menu says "Quad Burger, enough said" To this I reply NOOO, NOT ENOUGH SAID!!! The quad burger is 5 patties, not 4!!! I unhinged my jaw to try take the first bite of the monstrous burger in which a poor cow gave it's life so my fatass can feel like I've accomplished something in life. It took approximately 4 bites (after that I blacked out) to finally take my first bite of the top bun. Prior, I was working my way up the ladder through layers upon layers of meat and cheese. After coming back to it, I had realized that I finished everything, or at least that's what they told me. My face smelled of ketchup, mustard and greasy meat. The entire lower half of my face had become a flavor savor. The entire experience has changed my life. I've never been at such a low point in life allowing my hunger to get the best of me and to think it was acceptable to down and entire 5 patty burger on a Monday. Low quality frozen food. I ordered their hot tamales and they literally sent me 2 tamales in sealed plastic "microwaveable" bags. So after a love affair with Choppers, I'm ending it. The food is still good (for fast food). It's the delivery drivers who i can't stand. I get a call from this delivery driver saying he's downstairs. I tell him I'll be right out. Awesome, my food's on time. I walk outside literally 30 seconds later to see a confused delivery driver on the other side of the street, cursing me out, muttering things like "Where is this fucking guy?" I wave to him, as if to say "Odd numbers are on this side of the street, buddy." He crosses the street without looking, narrowly misses getting hit by a car, and has the nerve to tell me I gave them the wrong address. That's funny because the slip on the bag he handed me has the right one written right on it. I was polite and kind. I said "thank you." He turned around and barked "yeah" and walked away. Not worth the hassle. The people at the counter when you go there aren't much better either. If it puts you out to do your job, you're not going to keep customers. I'd also kill for a burger from this place to be cooked less than well-done. Their meat is good, but well-done beef isn't. read more

Walking up to the place from W. North Ave., we saw a raggedy sign that said "choppers" on an equally raggedy building... "is it closed?" we all clamored. We kept walking and saw a huge plume of smoke right on top of the actual Choppers establishment. First red flag. Anyways, the hunger was real and we headed on in. It was pretty smoky inside too, since they have so many burgers ready on the grill. Ordered the special which consists of a double cheeseburger, cole slaw, a pile of large steak fries, and a drink. So I mean the experience itself wasn't bad or anything because the service was nice and the food came out pretty quick. The main thing for me, and for many people is obviously the taste of the food. When I moved to Chicago, every time I drove by this place and smelled the burgers, I thought to myself, I bet this place tastes better than most the fast food joints out there. We also had to try out some of their shakes, I went with the Cinnamon Apple Pie shake which was honestly the best shake I have had in years. I am 100% sure any person who buys that shake will die and go to milkshake heaven just like I did. It actually had chunks of apple, yum. My friend tried their S'mores shake that I think is a special item and isn't always for grabs. Of course that one was delicious too but I definitely preferred mine. I've been coming to Chopper's specifically for their yellowfin tuna steak sandwich since they were on Clark Street fifteen years ago. The oreo malt is also a frequent indulgence despite my bowelogically crippling battle with lactose intolerance (appetizing, no?). They also have the best freaking cole slaw in the world.
