Half and half Bolani
Lester L.

Was craving for kabobs and found this place through yelp. Glad I did! The kabobs were delicious, we had the 3 meat combo with chicken breast, beef tikka, and beef chaplee. We also had the half and half bolani which was also very good and quite large. Service was great our server was very friendly. The place is small but quite comfortable. Ventilation must be good because despite the open kitchen the cooking fumes don't make it out to the dining area.

My wife and I stopped by Chopan Kabob for lunch on a Saturday around noon and the restaurant was pretty empty. Between the two of us, we shared the bolani kachaloo -- flat-bread stuffed with mashed potato, green onion and herbs, and a combo platter -- opting for the beef shami and the lamb kabob, since the chicken shami was not available at the time. Considering that we were likely the first party to dine in that day and that the kitchen is a pretty small operation, the food took around 25 minutes to prepare. We didn't mind waiting, but if you're in a large group or are in a hurry, you should definitely keep this in mind and plan accordingly. The bolani is fried really well. It's not the crispiest I've ever had, but I attribute that to the steaming potato filling inside. I'm sure air-frying the leftovers will be incredible. The yogurt sauce is such a refreshing contrast to the fried bolani. The proteins from our combo platter were both very juicy. I loved the rich combination of spices used in the meats. We wish we had a chance to try the chicken shami, but otherwise between the lamb kebab and the beef shami, the beef was our preferred of the two. If you ordered the bolani like we did, the proteins both go really well with the yogurt sauce as well. If I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely stopping by Chopan Kebob again for a meal.

Small, homey place with ~6-7 tables inside and additional seating outside. Greeted and seated as soon as we walked in on a Friday evening. A lot of parking tho the parking lot can be a little tight. Bolani was good, flavorful and peppery with a nice crispy outside. Yogurt it came with was refreshing. 10/10 Chaplee wasn't too spicy, flavorful and had a unique crisp to it 10/10 Beef/chicken kabobs were reeeeally flavorful, not spicy, not dry. Points that our 6 month old was able to eat this with us 10/10 Lamb was lacking which is a bummer because i love lamb. Tho it had good flavor and aroma, it was dry 6/10 Mantu were fresh, good amount of filling 10/10 Overall, prices were reasonable, portions were good size and the service was friendly/quick. Would come back.

Great cute little restaurant perfect to grab lunch or seat there to enjoy your meal in a quite place (no music playing). The food was delicious I got the lamb Chopan and it was tender and juicy, the water was nice and cold very refreshing. The waiter was nice, the restaurant was clean and there's parking right outside.

The menu is what you would expect for an afghan kabob shop. Bolani (potato) and eggplant with the chicken kabob was the choice. With a green tea to wash it down. The meal was well prepared and the bolani was nice and crisp with minimal oil. Lots of yogurt dip served with it. The eggplant is served with pita like bread and is enough to share. The kabob plate comes with rice and a green salad. I'm not sure Italian dressing is what you would get in Kabul. But this is Concord CA and so it was. The price is fair. 40 bucks for it all. My wife got a Diet Coke The mural is amazing btw

This is a cute little restaurant that you can get some fresh food. I've had some Afghan food before and wanted to find some place closer to home. Decided to try Chopan as an option. We got there, and it took about 20 mins to make our order. The chicken tikka masala was okay. I'd probably try another place for that. The potato bolani was good, and the choplee and chicken combo was a little less than expected. I thought it would be a little more for the price, but it tasted good. I think I'll come back and try some other things.

Beef Tikka Kabob

It's a authentic local cozy Afghan restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating. Kids friendly in the outside seating. Good for groups and meetup. It's located in a plaza with lots of free parking. We had kitchen and beef kabobs with cumin rice, really tenderly delicious. Dal soup was a bit spicy to me but still refreshing. Will come back for casual eat in or takeout.

Unfortunately, I already knew there wasn't going to be a next time and Zelle'd her anyway. This place really needs a good deep cleaning. I walked in to a small eatery with very few tables, horrible lighting, flies everywhere, a random piece of pipe on the floor, and a very sad looking display counter. I was worried about the cleanliness of food preparation just based on what the restaurant looked like. I was hopeful, however, and the food itself wasn't that bad. I didn't get any flat bread with my beef koubideh order. It was a little tough, but decent seasoning. There are a handful of similar cuisines in the area that I would probably go to before landing on this spot.

We got a too good to go order which was massive filled with an incredible amount of rice, chapli kabob, stewed spinach or kale, salad, a carrot samosa, a potato samosa, flat bread with potatoes and leaks, and baklava AND we got a separate koobideh. The restaurant is located a shopping center with plenty of parking. The staff included a young man who worked the front and the back and a woman who I believe cooked everything. The restaurant leaves a bit to be desired as far as ambiance goes, but is good for pick up. The young man was very nice. The food smelled incredible. We could not wait to get home and dig in. The chapli was very spicy ( I've never had this before and was surprised). But otherwise everything else tasted great.

I'm not an authority on Afghan food so this is rated as an outsider…read more Overall the food can be summarized as: lightly seasoned, enjoy the simple flavors of each component, and Must use the sauces to complete the dish. I personally think everything needed some salt, but maybe it's meant to be this way. Highlight is most definitely the green sauce (yogurt and chili, not spicy), baklava (sweet sticky on the bottom and flaky crisp on top, not overly sweet), yogurt mint drink (dough). Shami beef and chicken kebab were juicy and not dry. Through a bit of miscommunication.. I was given the yogurt drink instead of the normal side of yogurt cucumber sauce for the meat, and was warned by Ali that some people don't like it since it's a yogurt drink with salt, but honestly it was great and was essentially a yogurt mint sauce I expect from other Mediterranean/Middle Eastern type places but more watery. So admittedly I just took sips of this while taking bites of the kebab and rice and it was pretty much the flavors I was looking for, but an extra step. Beef Mantu was another source of confusion since there are regular and homemade versions (I didn't realize). They made me the homemade version without confirming with me on the phone; no problem. It was filled with lightly seasoned beef and topped with interesting spices. Overall not bad not great, definitely needs sauce / salt. Too light in my opinion. And for $25 I wouldn't get again not worth it. The customer service from Ali was great. Knowing this was my first time he explained everything, offered to charge me less due to the miscommunications (I declined), and gave complimentary side of sauce and baklava as a nice gesture. Good food. I know how to order next time. Extra green sauce or yogurt drink all over.

Service was pleasant, and we received enough attention throughout the meal course. Great, open seating with the view on the Monument Boulevard, that was bright and comfortable. The outstanding Afghani food, and even better the desserts with saffron tea made this experience complete throughout. Would highly recommend Narunj Palow with thinly sliced dates. Turned out to be a little bit pricier than I thought it would be for a lunch, however, it really did worth it.

I think I'm in love…read more.. We stumbled upon Mazza as we were looking for a bite to eat before hitting the movies. What a gem we found! Mazza has been in business for 3 months and took over the spot that Agave had been. Everything was great, but here's my list in descending order - Mixed Bolani - freshly made bolani with potatoes and chives. This dish came out piping hot and I slathered all three sauces on top (yogurt, cilantro/mint?, sweet and spicy pepper). Great way to start the meal. I kind of inhaled this one, so next time I will try to slow down and taste the flavor. Tikka Kebab - tender pieces of meat on skewers. The menu said beef/lamb, but all the pieces I got tasted like lamb. Nice sear on the lamb and fattier pieces were tasty (not grisly). This is accompanied by flatbread and an herby, cucumber salad. Eggplant side - I have a friend that makes an excellent version of this dish and I really haven't found anything close until trying this one at Mazza. Cooked down so it just melts in your mouth. Flavors are great and the yogurt just takes it over the top. Chapli Kebab - we had a "I'll have what she's having" moment when this dish came out for the neighboring table. Onions, beef patties and tomato come out on a scalding hot metal plate. This dish was causing smoke for a good 2 minutes after landing on our table. Beef is definitely spiced as the description says (herbs and sumac?) and it comes with a side of fluffy rice. Tip - if you are coming for a meal and a movie, they are currently running a promotion for 15% off your order if you show proof of your movie attendance. Mazza nails it with a triple crown of fantastic good, generous portions, and really affordable prices. Really excited that this is an option for us in the East Bay!

Parking is plenty on the street or in their little lot if early/off hours. If it's on a busy time or with events going on at Todos Santos Plaza, then it can be tricky to find parking. I got the Chicken Platter ($18.99) It came with rice, chicken, salad, humus, 4 triangle pita bread and extra tzatziki sauce on the side. The first thing I noticed right away was that they love their sumac here. I don't mind it at all and the more sumac the better I think. The rice is really fluffy and pairs really well with the chicken. With the tzatziki sauce drizzled on top and extra to add on each bite, it's a great combo wombo of flavor. The hummus is really good too! It is not watery like some places and holds its shape well. Went great with the rice/chicken, with pita or even by itself! Salad was just mix of greens, tomatos, cucmbers with some cheese crumble. No olive oil or vinegar was added so I had to spread some tzatziki to give it a little boost. Overall the dish was really delicious. I would recommend to come here if you like Mediterranian food. Interested in their falafal and would likely get that next time.
