Masala Dosa
Rosanne P.

Called in today to order 2 masala dosas and the dessert (rava kesari) which my boyfriend loves but found out they are under new management with a new menu, so they didn't have the dessert. Looking over the menu, it was similar but a little different. They have added more veggie curries which is a plus! The masala dosas were served with a chunkier potato with more ingredients like crispy lentil and red onion. It was a little different than the previous business but still very good. Also the potato was served under the dosa instead of inside. My boyfriend and I enjoyed our dosas and we'll definitely be back! Looking forward to trying the veg curries.

Delicious. My husband and I stopped here last night maybe 30 minutes before closing. I had a potato dosa, and my husband had the chicken, tiki masala dosa as well as Lamb biryani rice. Everything was flavored very well. Nothing was too spicy. We didn't get sick from this food, which is a miracle. The mango lassi tasted very fresh. I wish they would have some English menus or descriptions of the dishes. I'm familiar with some Indian food, but not everything. It's technically just a to go restaurant, but they do have a small bench too quickly eat food. We work out at the gym nearby and will definitely make this one of our monthly rotations.

I love South Indian food. Dosa is crunchy and thin with a few doughy spots. Exactly how I like it to be. The sauces/soup were great. You can eat it there but it was more like NY pizza style of stand and eat. Ambiance: I would argue this place is more of a to-go only style since I don't really like eating standing up. I got it to-go and it travelled relatively well. I am not a fan of the mango lassi though. It had a bit of a strange flavor that I couldn't describe. Service was homely and great. In short, the dosa was delicious. I can't wait to try out all other items.

My family loves dosas, and is used to driving 30+ minutes to get them in Pleasanton-- so glad there's this new spot right in our backyard! We placed a phone order, which was easy and quick and our order was finished by the time we arrived 15 minutes later. We decided to stick with the classics, masala dosa and mango lassis to drink. If you are travelling home for more than 15 minutes, I reccomend putting the dosas in the oven to crisp them up. The dosas were excellent, stuffed with potato filling and the crepe on the outside was perfectly crispy. They also came with a variety of sauces to dip, which were all varied and delicious. The mango lassis paired perfectly with the spice of the dosas, they were so smooth and sweet with great mango flavor. Loved this place and will definitely be back!

Dosa- Chicken tikka masala. Really good

I was pleasantly surprised at this place. It doesn't look like much- location is a little out of the way, storefront doesn't really stand out, and the place is tiny (strictly to-go, no tables inside). I got their dosa (Chicken tikka masala). It was excellent! The chicken was so flavorful. It was in fairly small pieces, but it was tender with some slight char. The spices they cooked it in really made the filling excellent. It wasn't too spicey, but just enough to make your mouth slightly tingle. The dosa outside was nicely cooked, especially when fresh. I ate half right away, and then half for dinner, reheated in the toasted oven and it was still good. Their dipping sauces are really good too. I've had dosas 2-3 times previously, and this one might be my fav. I wish they had pictures on their menu because I don't know what most of the stuff is, and I bet most non-Indian people wouldn't either. Its not your typical menu with curry, rice, naan, etc. They have lots of dishes you don't find in other Indian restaurants. Overall, the food was super good. Service was fine, they're not smiley or anything, just efficient. I was there on a Saturday noon, and there was no other customers, so I hope they make it...

It's great to finally have a no nonsense dosa place nearby, and they just opened, so definitely some growing pains and room for improvement. Ordered masala dosa, chicken 65, and a gulab jamun. This is a strictly to go place. The verdict, the masala dosa was Very good! Crispy and chewy shell, with a tasty filling. Unfortunately, the coconut chutney was frozen solid! Sambar was just ok, and the chicken 65 pretty good, but missing something. Will try again in a few weeks when they have had time to work out the wrinkles.

We arrived around 8 PM and were welcomed with the same warm, energetic greeting you'd expect at opening time. Kumar, a young host, was absolutely the friendliest -- such a pleasant start to the evening. We ordered a bunch of dishes: veg fried rice (delicious), dal makhani (yum), jeera rice, a vegetable curry, garlic naan, pakodas (yum), chai, and mango lassi. But the standout was the veg chowmein -- it was bomb. It became everyone's favorite instantly and was the first dish cleared from the table. We even met one of the cooks who was super sweet. Bless you guys for being so amazing. This is seriously some of the best food around -- I'll definitely be back for those chowmein. Highly recommend!

Even the Russian ones I had in Portland were super interesting and flavorful. And don't get me wrong. The Paneer Tikka Masala and Lamb Korma were tasty enough. But the Momo's really sealed the deal this time. We ordered from this place from DoorDash a couple weeks ago and I almost wish we didn't order Naan. It just felt like it kinda got in the way. Why dip a Naan in Masala when you can dip a Momo in it? Whatever combination of vegetables were in these delectable dumplings were divine. I feel like I tasted like a combo of potatoes with carrots and lots of fun herbs. Maybe Ginger? But then just dip if in your favorite saucey entree of choice and it just completes the meal. I have my usual go-to for Indian food in the area, but my wife and I were excited to try Sargam for…read moredinner because we had been given a gift certificate. We'd been there once, years ago, and couldn't really remember it much. We walked in and waited a solid 5 minutes (or more) for someone to come to the front acknowledge us, and there were others waiting as well. We assumed that they must be very busy, but they only had a few tables of customers. The atmosphere wasn't nice, but it was ok. We didn't expect fine dining vibes. There were no table cloths, and a mint green paint job which matched the color of the napkins. We ordered the "vegetarian feast" and also the butter chicken; we wanted to sample different items and probably bring home leftovers. The first thing that came out was the chai tea, which was fine. After a little wait, the samosas arrived. The samosas were delicious, and we agreed that they were the best we'd ever had. The two sauces they served with the samosas were also very tasty. Unfortunately, that was the last great thing about our experience at Sargam. The wait for the rest of the food was quite long. We weren't in a hurry, but it was definitely longer than should be acceptable at a restaurant. (All in all we were there for about 90 minutes). When the food finally came out, one of the items was missing from the vegetarian feast (the "two naris"). We didn't notice until later that we never got this item. The food's taste was average. Perhaps below average for the Indian food in the Bay Area. The chicken was not very tender but it wasn't terrible. We ordered the food "medium spicy" but there was zero spice. Also, the temperature wasn't as hot as it should be. Most of the items were almost luke warm. The nan wasn't anything special. It wasn't as tasty (or warm) as it is at most places we've been to. At the end, we were supposed to get two desserts, according to the menu's description (photo attached) of the vegetarian feast. They never came. We wrapped up our leftovers and I asked the woman (who seemed to be the manager), who had taken our order and also brought us our check, if we were going to get the desserts. She gave me a horrible look. She looked as if I had said something terrible, and acted like she had no idea what we were talking about. I explained that the dessert was on the menu as part of the "vegetarian feast". We waited about five more minutes and no dessert came out. I decided to pay and leave; we were full anyway. Sargam has "acceptable" food and ambience, long waits, and bad service with missing items. Also, they added a "service fee" of 3.5% to the check (which was not mentioned anywhere on the menu). Weird. I wanted to like it. We won't be back.

The buffet doesn't change much, but I tell you, we were there this afternoon, and I can't imagine a better combination of tastes than what I had: 3 each of the small fish pakoras and the fried chickpea flour ones; a portion of tasty white rice; a delicious cup of yellow dal; and a goodly portion of goat curry. All of this along with the yummy Naan that was brought to out table. Sargam is a tried and true venue for us (We go back a couple of decades and have dined there with so many friends over the years I probably can't even remember them all. If you're anywhere near Walnut Creek, give it a try! (Have a look at the many photos of the food. I only have one to share today of the establishment at night. We also often take home a Mixed Tandoori Grill platter, which combines many tasty kinds of meat, and goes a long way!)

It's been awhile since we've been to a lunch buffet at an Indian restaurant due to the pandemic so we were really excited this was here! The chicken tikka masala was delicious and flavored well. The naan served fresh was to die for! The best part about this place IMO is that when I asked if anything was spicy, they said no AND IT WAS TRUE. My friend and I walked 16 minutes because we were starving and didn't have a car. The reviews looked decent, so we figured it was worth the trek. As we got closer, however, we ended up on a street with a smell that could only be described as a warning sign from the universe. I told my friend, "If the restaurant is on this street, I'm not going in." Naturally, it was. My friend convinced me to at least give it a chance. We walked inside, and while the smell wasn't quite enough to send me running, it definitely wasn't helping build confidence. My friend was fine with it. Later I realized she was simply too tired to walk anywhere else. I ordered the lamb biryani, and she ordered the butter chicken. We also got what was advertised as a green salad. Calling it a green salad felt generous--it was more of an onion convention with a few green leaves attending as guests. The food arrived, and I was so hungry that I would have eaten almost anything at that point. I started enthusiastically. Then something magical happened: as soon as my hunger went away, so did my desire to continue eating. The butter chicken was the biggest mystery of the evening. It tasted nothing like butter chicken. In fact, I'm still trying to solve the case. Was it chicken? Was it butter? Was it an entirely new life form? The world may never know. The lamb biryani wasn't terrible, but it wasn't memorable either. The most memorable part of the meal was trying to figure out what exactly we were eating. There were only two other occupied tables, and they looked just like us--hungry tourists who had followed the reviews and were now silently reevaluating their life choices. As we left, my Indian friends' advice finally came back to me: "If you walk into an Indian restaurant and there are no Indian customers, keep walking." Sadly, my brain remembered this valuable life lesson only after I had already met the world's most mysterious butter chicken. Some lessons are learned the hard way. Others are learned 16 minutes from your hotel while carrying a to-go box you know you're never going to open. On the bright side, the walk there and back counted as cardio, and I left with a story that was more satisfying than the meal. for the adventure. for the food.
