It turns out that, indeed, this coffee shop is nestled in a neighborhood. But if you look closely for a rusted-looking building that looks completely abandoned, then you will find Steelyard Coffee. It's hidden in plain sight. Once I got inside, I was delighted to see a warm and welcoming space, with a full coffee menu and other beverages, like tea and smoothies. I just wanted a little cup of green tea, so that's what I got, in a to-go cup. It was ready lickety-split. Steelyard has a few things to eat, like some cookies and muffins, as well as pans of baked oatmeal, parfaits, breakfast burritos, quiche and other breakfasty things. There are plenty of places to sit, and the decor is very farmhouse and rustic. It seems like a nice place to sit and work remotely or visit with a friend, but also a place where you can hit it and quit it like I did.

It's tucked inside an older industrial-style building and shares space with a couple of antique-type shops, so it's not somewhere you'd likely just stumble upon. The coffee was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful. My wife ordered an iced "Reese in a Cup" and loved it. I went with a hot Cuban Kiss--a mix of cinnamon, vanilla, and white chocolate. It was good, but I'd probably try something different next time. Pricing was very reasonable compared to a lot of coffee spots these days. We also split a cinnamon roll that tasted homemade and was delicious. Overall, a great hidden gem and worth the stop.

I believe the workers work for tips, at least Ja'Lila does who served us. During our hour there we observed a mix of folks coming in. Some were obviously regulars chatting it up with Ja'Lila while they sipped their drink. Another couple on a road trip stopped in on their way to the east coast for some coffees and to use the WiFi. Some were in and out. Steady flow. Everyone treated with respect and dignity whether you made a donation or not. Donations are pay what you want. I'm not a coffee drinker but my sister said it's good! I got hot chocolate. The hot chocolate is homemade and I got fresh whipped cream which was also homemade. Delicious! Can you get that at Starbucks? Just asking I wouldn't know. I no longer lived in South Bend but if I did this would be my new spot. My sister does however and she's already been back before I had a chance to post my review. If you're a local and you remember the old VanBuren grocery store this is the spot! I basically spent two days at this coffee house between 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM. They were very kind and didn't mind me hanging out for the day. I highly recommend this place. When we got to the address, but it was a bit confusing because the hours said they were open but the store was closed. We had to call to figure out how to get inside LOL so tip: when the furniture store is closed, you have to enter the café from the rear of the building. Specialty drinks are pretty pricey but they had a really amazing variety of options on the menu. My husband and I both got just a regular coffee, and it was excellent!

As a home roaster who pulls my own espresso shots, I love coffee and many shops are disappointing. This joint was highly rated, so we figured why not give it a chance. They have many creative lattes and drinks, but as a purist I ordered a double espresso to see what the actual coffee tastes like. Oh my word! Pronounced notes of stone fruit, blueberry, roasted nut. This is one of the best espressos I have ever enjoyed - not just in Indiana, but anywhere. This means several things - whoever is responsible for the roast really cares. It also means extraction of the shot is optimized - none of the tell tale signs of over extraction or under extraction in the cup. This was seriously delicious. The rest of our party isn't that much into espresso, and they greatly enjoyed their cappuccinos and lattes. But I was ecstatically over the moon, and gave the barista multiple "high fives" for this incredible espresso. She was delighted, as she noted the owner is the one responsible for the roast and will be very pleased that someone noticed the quality. Now, you should also know this shop appears to be in a modern industrial complex (different place for a coffee shop than one might expect), and decor is very modern. It also appears to host a sub-community of knitting circles, which is cool as well. But if you're a coffee lover - yeah, there are more "Starbucks-like" college kid joints in South Bend - but this place serves by far a superior pure coffee experience.

The ambience is very industrial business lunch meets Starbucks vibe. They have WiFi and lots of games to pass time that we noticed on shelving. My friend chose the Raspberry white mocha iced and a roasted pepper soup and grilled cheese. I chose a hot vanilla coconut latte and a sausage egg and cheddar panini. I am so bummed I did not take pictures per my normal! The panini was boxed to go, very generous in portion. Delicious. The roasted pepper soup was also good, very filling with a thick bisque like texture and lots of flavor. Her grilled cheese was a standard grilled cheese, gooey and fresh! Drinks: There was such beautiful pictures of lattes etc online, I received mine in a to go cup with no lid. They served our food at the table so I'm not sure why that happened. I consider myself a very versed coffee connoisseur, I had high hopes for this cafe! The latte was more milk and not enough espresso. It was like it was a shot short. The flavor of coconut was lacking to the point of non existent . I am positive I had an oops drink of the day. However I did taste my friend's raspberry white mocha, and the raspberry was so bright with great espresso flavor. She also was served in a paper to go cup instead of mug. I want to note, we loved the cafe! The cups were not a deal breaker! The latte was my only issue, otherwise I would definitely recommend this place for nice cafe experience!

The cafe is inside of Granger Community Church, but when you enter you are immediately in the bookstore/cafe/seating areas. It's a cool, calm, casual and comfy environment - the 4 Cs (which I literally just made up) and their seating is very spaced out throughout the area. Some seating is around tables, fireplaces, and in big oversized cozy chairs. I enjoyed a latte that was pretty tasty, I didn't try the food but overall the atmosphere is my favorite aspect of The Cafe!
