April's coffee date took us up to northern Indiana while we were in town for a Luke Combs concert. This month, we checked out SteelYard Coffee Co.--and I'd definitely call it a hidden gem. It's tucked inside an older industrial-style building and shares space with a couple of antique-type shops, so it's not somewhere you'd likely just stumble upon. The coffee was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful. My wife ordered an iced "Reese in a Cup" and loved it. I went with a hot Cuban Kiss--a mix of cinnamon, vanilla, and white chocolate. It was good, but I'd probably try something different next time. Pricing was very reasonable compared to a lot of coffee spots these days. We also split a cinnamon roll that tasted homemade and was delicious. Overall, a great hidden gem and worth the stop. read more

What a hidden gem this place is! Don't let the outside deter you... it's quite the experience and ambiance once you get inside! I fell in love with Steelyard instantly, just based on vibes alone, and then I had their food and coffee! I will be thinking about the turkey panini for days. Peanut Butter "Reeses" latte?!? Yes, please! I was so excited to order when I saw this on the menu that I forgot to ask for oat milk. Which is fine, because they don't have oat milk anyway. Coconut milk would've been OK with it but the regular milk was fine (since I'm not avoiding dairy anymore). I will say if you have issues with soy, nuts (almond) and don't like coconut AND have a dairy allergy, your option will probably be tea or smoothies. My only disappointment is that they didn't offer oat milk, which has become a great offering for people with multiple allergies... not to mention it makes for a much creamier drink! Anyway, I digress. This building is GORGEOUS. The ivy growing up the sides, it's amazing! They were super fast to make the coffee... and I'm glad they had the espresso machine going because it was a little hard knowing where to go. My only suggestion would be for them to have a sign outside by the door with an arrow & another along the back wall of this cool multi-business space. I'm glad the vintage decor store wasn't open yet or I'd have gotten stuck in there & forgotten all about coffee! So if you like to shop home dec, make sure you stop in there too. I got hubs the iced version of my Reese's drink & he LOVED it. It's different than the caramel frappes he usually gets & definitely different than the chai I usually get (which was such a hard choice because they have so many great flavors here!) but I'm glad I tried the Reese's. Cute space in the Birds Gotta Fly building. Coffee is bitter and not cheap, also they did not have a brewed decaf option. Not a go to place if you have any diet restrictions. But if not worried about diet restrictions and you like dark roast beans you will enjoy. read more

I just spent a lovely hour enjoying quiche and a cup of coffee at Steelyard. I'm from out of town and try to enjoy local (non-chain) coffee shops when I'm traveling. This is among the better ones I've visited lately. Lots of room to sit. No one pushing to have me move along. Good quiche, good coffee, unique location in old brick manufacturing building. I like the place but unless someone invites me to meet them here, there is no chance I will chose to come here simply because I would not spend that on a cup of coffee when I can get it for less at EVERY OTHER business in Elkhart. New favorite! Ohhh, how I love a good-feels coffee house and this one really took me to a place of comfy-ness and fancy-dive goodness. I love this spot! It's inside of Birds Gotta Fly, a home decorators paradise and fits the theme of the old warehouse that it is housed in. It's a gorgeous location inside despite the outside location. They have completely revamped the inside of the old factory to have a farm-style-like/industrial theme. The coffee house part is roomy with lots of seating. There are some games available to play but my favorite thing to do is to just sit and watch the people shopping about or have a conversation with someone I am meeting up with there. It's a great workspace location as well. The coffee and espresso are delicious and good quality! You can tell they take their business seriously and the baristas have been trained well. I highly suggested the Kissed Cuban and Americano! Their food selection is limited but they are just a small cafe and have a new menu each day. Their sweet breakfast options are VERY sweet - if you don't love overly sweet then ask for the baked oatmeal without the brown sugar or try the quiche or a breakfast burrito. Was a little puzzled why they were playing country music - not your typical coffeehouse playlist, not to mention we're 10 days away from Christmas! Alright guys, I try to keep my coffee snobbery to a minimum. But where I draw the line is when you ask if they have pour-overs and the barista starts telling you about their French press. It was a rough start, but the coffee ended up being pretty good and the interior has a cool vibe to it. I normally go to the Electric Brew but was dissatisfied that the brew still requires masks after the CDC's announcement the other day for those of us who have already been vaccinated. A friend suggested this place and came to it. They had things like quiches on the menu which I was tempted to get. I ended up getting an iced Reese's and it was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Do plan to come back soon. read more

How did I not know about this place until today??? I was looking for new places to have work meetings and stumbled upon this little gem tucked back off the road. The coffee shop itself is adorable - very trendy/industrial decor and plenty of space to sit and chat. There are even little boutique shops in the same building! (win/win) They have tons of tasty options on the menu (food AND coffee) and the employees couldn't be any more friendly. Steelyard Coffee Company just might be my new favorite place!
