As a home roaster who pulls my own espresso shots, I love coffee and many shops are disappointing. This joint was highly rated, so we figured why not give it a chance. They have many creative lattes and drinks, but as a purist I ordered a double espresso to see what the actual coffee tastes like. Oh my word! Pronounced notes of stone fruit, blueberry, roasted nut. This is one of the best espressos I have ever enjoyed - not just in Indiana, but anywhere. This means several things - whoever is responsible for the roast really cares. It also means extraction of the shot is optimized - none of the tell tale signs of over extraction or under extraction in the cup. This was seriously delicious. The rest of our party isn't that much into espresso, and they greatly enjoyed their cappuccinos and lattes. But I was ecstatically over the moon, and gave the barista multiple "high fives" for this incredible espresso. She was delighted, as she noted the owner is the one responsible for the roast and will be very pleased that someone noticed the quality. Now, you should also know this shop appears to be in a modern industrial complex (different place for a coffee shop than one might expect), and decor is very modern. It also appears to host a sub-community of knitting circles, which is cool as well. But if you're a coffee lover - yeah, there are more "Starbucks-like" college kid joints in South Bend - but this place serves by far a superior pure coffee experience.

I am so bummed I did not take pictures per my normal! The panini was boxed to go, very generous in portion. Delicious. The roasted pepper soup was also good, very filling with a thick bisque like texture and lots of flavor. Her grilled cheese was a standard grilled cheese, gooey and fresh! Drinks: There was such beautiful pictures of lattes etc online, I received mine in a to go cup with no lid. They served our food at the table so I'm not sure why that happened. I consider myself a very versed coffee connoisseur, I had high hopes for this cafe! The latte was more milk and not enough espresso. It was like it was a shot short. The flavor of coconut was lacking to the point of non existent . I am positive I had an oops drink of the day. However I did taste my friend's raspberry white mocha, and the raspberry was so bright with great espresso flavor. She also was served in a paper to go cup instead of mug. It turns out that, indeed, this coffee shop is nestled in a neighborhood. But if you look closely for a rusted-looking building that looks completely abandoned, then you will find Steelyard Coffee. Steelyard has a few things to eat, like some cookies and muffins, as well as pans of baked oatmeal, parfaits, breakfast burritos, quiche and other breakfasty things.
