It turns out that, indeed, this coffee shop is nestled in a neighborhood. But if you look closely for a rusted-looking building that looks completely abandoned, then you will find Steelyard Coffee. It's hidden in plain sight. Once I got inside, I was delighted to see a warm and welcoming space, with a full coffee menu and other beverages, like tea and smoothies. I just wanted a little cup of green tea, so that's what I got, in a to-go cup. It was ready lickety-split. Steelyard has a few things to eat, like some cookies and muffins, as well as pans of baked oatmeal, parfaits, breakfast burritos, quiche and other breakfasty things. There are plenty of places to sit, and the decor is very farmhouse and rustic. It seems like a nice place to sit and work remotely or visit with a friend, but also a place where you can hit it and quit it like I did.

The place has a rustic feel to it with handcrafted items in the entryway! The coffee bar features several hot pots of Java for sampling! The owner is happy to educate his customers on types of coffee , roasting and brewing techniques. You are encouraged to wonder around and observe the large bags of coffee obtained from around the world! Hempton is a real expert and coffee historian. Ask him about "cowboy coffee". Came in yesterday after church for Turmeric Lattes and a snack. We had a delightful chocolate croissant and fruit pastries, but sadly there were no almond croissants Thankfully I ran into the owner and chef, Derek, and put in a special request for them today. He obliged and we arrived this morning just as they came out of the oven! They are massive, beautifully laminated with the perfect amount of frangipane. Looking forward to flying home with a few to share back home in Austin, Texas! The interior is super cute and uses old boat parts for the register and seating options. They have done a lovely job at capturing the overall late town vibes. If you haven't been in, now is a good time to change that!

The coffee, unfortunately, is ass. Bad enough that I genuinely hate docking an otherwise great local business two stars for it. The espresso tastes like someone emptied a bunch of used Keurig pods and cigarettes into pool water and boiled it for seven hours. Burnt, dirty and aggressively bitter, without any of the flavor that makes strong coffee actually good. And that's what makes it so frustrating. This is exactly the kind of independent bakery/cafe where I WANT to buy a great latte instead of going to Biggby or another chain. There's a huge opportunity here to be the legit coffee spot in town, and the rest of the place already deserves it. Please, for the love of God, fix the espresso. Your pastries deserve a better wingman.
