The Italian lemon cream cake was so delicious! My kids each got one scoop of ice cream and it was a very generous portion. They enjoyed it! My husband and I both really liked our coffee drinks. I got the iced dark mocha and he got hot coffee with cream- said the coffee was very good! The staff were all friendly and working hard! They have a lot of fun chocolates, cheesecakes, cakes, bagged candy and popcorn, various coffee/espresso drinks, and they had a sandwich menu on one side of the restaurant. I didn't realize that I took pictures of my drinks. I decided to update my review and add them. The customer service was great. I let the baristas know that I didn't know what I was looking for and she guided me till I found my perfect drink. This seems like a nice place to grab a nice cup of coffee and chat with a friend. Probably the best coffee drink I've had in a long time. I tried the Breve and had them add chocolate; I splurged! Wow, it tasted great. We were in search of ice cream on a hot summer evening. We had already bypassed 2 places that were packed, one with a line out the door. When we reached this place, we finally had accepted the fact that we would have to stand in a long line if we wanted ice cream in this town! They had lots of desserts, chocolate, pies, cake, candy, etc. I got the coconut ice cream with chocolate pieces in it (this is unique for coconut ice cream and it really works well!). I got my ice cream in their chocolate coated cone. This cone had a thick, hard coating of chocolate on it, it was so hard I had to utilize my molars to bite into it! This is not a pretty site bc biting an ice cream cone with your molar teeth causes chocolate and ice cream to get all over your face! I still really liked the cone and my ice cream. I would absolutely get both of them again! Beware: You will find a gum ball looking thing in the bottom of your ice cream. I realized after I had given it away that it is in fact not a gumball, but a colorful malt ball. I retracted my "gumball" so I could try it. Have been here a couple of times now. I have never had the food, but I have had cake and ice cream and really liked them both. I honestly don't remember much about the first visit (long time ago) but do remember liking the cake. The second time my wife and I ordered The Wolverine to share, which I'm glad we did because I don't think I could have finished it on my own (always a good problem to have). They were out of vanilla so we substituted for chocolate, and it ended up being VERY chocolatey, but still very good. It wasn't too crowded when we were there, and the workers were kind. Our order came out quickly and we enjoyed it at one of the small tables outside. I'd recommend stopping by if you're in the area shopping. read more

I ordered the peppermint white chocolate mocha and was expecting a strong mint flavor after smelling the previous drinks but it had very little mint flavor. The lady at the counter asked why I was so happy and I told her we were there to celebrate my elite status. We go sit down and wait for our ice cream. Now maybe I'm crazy but our cups looked big for a single scoop. My best friend didn't think it looked like a single either. So on top of becoming elite, it would appear the cashier generously, and without even saying anything to us, upgraded our sizes. I've been coming here since I was a kid to get hot cocoa and cake so I'm not sure if she thought giving me more ice cream would make more stars appear in my review, but that's not how I work. Yes, they got all stars but that's for the combination of cleanliness, great options, quickness and service from not just this visit but past visits. Stale caramel corn. No dates on the caramel corn. Rude staff when I tried to return items the next day (I had bought some as gifts). Agressive, amped up guy called me a liar and refused to refund. He took it personally and said that I was "insulting" his products. There were no insults.I merely explained that it had gone rancid and stale. Had to speak to a manager on phone (none on site) and had to return AGAIN the NEXT day for my refund, where that girl told me that yes, the Butter Rum flavor had probably been on the shelves since before summer and that she hated that corporate doesn't date the products. The place is cute with many dessert offerings, from ice cream to fudge to cheesecakes/cakes, cookies, and different types of bagged chocolates, popcorn and candies. There are lots of place to sit, along with tables. One group was playing Uno with huge Uno cards. There was a lady playing live music, and she was pretty good. We went with a Toasted Marshmallow Hot Chocolate, A Cherry Jubilee Hot Chocolate, a couple of bags of chocolate covered Michigan cherries and a slice of their brown cow cheesecake. Everything was really good. The hot chocolates were both good, but I really liked the cherry one. The brown cow cheese cake was a milk and white chocolate cheesecake, which was creamy and sinfully delish. I honestly love almost everything about st Joseph and I've been to the south bend chocolate shop on so many occasions. Their coffee is meh, the chocolates are okay but severely overpriced and as we found out today the food is not worth the price. We ordered six to go sandwiches and they forgot half of our sides! The food itself is pretty mediocre and if you go here so you're avoiding jimmy johns sandwiches I'd say it's not worth it. I'd take jimmy johns sandwiches over any of the items I ordered here today. The comments about cleanliness from other yelpers are pretty spot on. If you just want to satisfy a sweet tooth or get caffeine in your system go for it. But absolutely avoid the food. read more

We were looking to have some sweets and a hot drink before driving home. Water was luke cold to brew the tea, but we were told we would get a replacement. So we ended up drinking unbrewed, cold "tea." When we asked for a refill, they told us they misunderstood us earlier when they told us that a refill was free and that we would have to pay for a refill. So once you find it, the Chocolate Cafe ends up being a decent place to take a lunch in St. Joseph. We didn't see the museum part (or most of the café part either, to be honest) but still got good food and great value of the deal. I got a Rueben sandwich on rye with chips and a drink. It was a warm July day, so we were lucky to get a seat on the inside. I'm happy to report that the Reuben was a good sandwich; a fair amount of corned beef combined with sauerkraut and dressing in the right proportions. The ingredients seemed to be really high quality as well. The best part is, I believe on Sunday they have "kids eat free". Which means that the hot dogs and grilled cheese with chips my kids got were on the house. I couldn't ask for a better price, and to be honest it tasted good too. So the three of us ate for something like $15, which is an absolute bargain. I think it's one of the lesser known places in St. Joseph, but I'll be sure to come back the next time I'm in the area. read more

This spot is pretty great and has savory and sweet options for all peoples eating needs. They have cute stuff in the museum part and delicious treats! I've been to the chocolate cafe several times and the experience is not really consistent from one visit to the next. The staffing seems to change drastically between the summer months and the winter months, with a much more friendly atmosphere during the latter. The atmosphere goes along the same lines as the service: cozy and inviting during the winter months, hectic and crowded in the summer. Being a touristy spot, though, these are understandable. The baked desserts are tempting from the case and oh so decidant on the plate. The chocolate dipped fork they hand you with a piece of cake is a really fun touch. The ice cream, though, leaves much to be desired. It's far too dense to really be enjoyable in the summer heat. I tried a few flavors and they were all just intensely thick and the peanut butter cookie dough was gritty. Overall I would highly recommend any of the mouth watering cakes they serve, preferably during the off season months. read more

Aside from saying hello those were my only interactions with her. I bought coffee the first time, but day two she talked me right out of that sale. Apparently she doesn't need my $30 of business. Will never go back. Wow, dessert mecca! I had read about this place in Chicago magazine actually, so when we were visiting a friend in Bridgman we made a swing by for some warming drinks. YUM! I had the LaSalle hot chocolate, a cup of chocolatey minty goodness with whipped cream on top; the bracing mint really was refreshing. My boyfriend got the apple cider, which he deemed worthy. There were no less than half a dozen types of hot chocolate available, not to mention some tempting cakes and pies, a slough of Halloween/fall themed options, a rainbow of ice creams, and a case full of bonbons. If you don't find something here that appeals to you, you clearly don't like dessert. Speaking of Halloween, there was a huge stuffed bear (grizzly, not teddy) dressed as a pirate in one corner. Awesome! The young girl taking the orders at the counter was a little ditzy, as if she hadn't been fully trained in customer service, and the several places to place orders and pick up items around the huge counter was slightly confusing, but not a big deal. The Chocolate Cafe is a downtown St. Joe staple. It isn't a museum--I don't know why that is in the title. It's an amazing dessert and coffee shop that's the perfect stop between some window shopping, the place to go for great ice cream, and an ideal cafe to meet friends or to enjoy solo. Their main offerings are chocolate, cheesecake, ice cream, and various hot beverages. Their hot chocolate is out-of-this-world good, made with real chocolate right before your very eyes! Another favorite of mine is their coffee wein--it's half coffee, half hot chocolate, 100% deliciousness. There are a few chocolate and ice cream shops in St. Joe, and I've tried them all (many times). I keep coming back to the Chocolate Cafe for its delicious food, its ideal location (right on the corner of two main streets, so perfect for people watching), and its calming, homey ambiance. read more

This place is in a prime location in St. Joe. They have very nice bistro tables on the sidewalk and great music blaring outside. My 3 year old started dancing every time we walked past. We went in for a coffee one day and it was awful. Like take a few sips and throw it away awful. They also had a lot of bagged chocolates and other prepackaged goods displayed. I told the girls it was her birthday, and they went absolutely above and beyond drizzling the cake with chocolate and sprinkles and trying to find candles for us, etc. I was blown away by how sweet they were! They also made her a chocolate milk in a fancy cup. My daughter felt really special!! If you are looking for coffee, this may not be the best choice. I was entering the shop on one side ( I think the east side ) with two toddlers in a double wide stroller . I tried to get it through the door but the stroller was slightly too big . So I had take both kids out , fold the stroller , get it through the door , then go up 2-3 stairs . Meanwhile he is standing there watching all this . When I left the shop I went through another entrance /exit ( on the south side ) and low and behold , there was a ramp ( no stairs ) and a handicapped accessable door that my stroller fit through.
