My take away showing great restraint
    April S.

Note: Hours are 12-5pm daily, which is not what yelp currently says. Delicious chocolate made from cocoa beans grown in Kauai or Oahu?! Can't get more local than that! So glad to find some delicious chocolate on the North Shore. Reasonably priced and local flavors with just enough room for one customer at a time. Jack was super pleasant and very proud of the grower and story behind the wares. Glad I didn't miss out and stocked up on a few things before heading out tomorrow night (including dark chocolate covered Mac nuts I couldn't find from Lydgate farms at the Hanalei market--grateful to happen upon them here!).

My boyfriend and I stopped in today and had such an amazing experience! Jack (the salesman) said we were his first customers from Pennsylvania! He gave us an in-depth story about his wife's chocolatier journey and we were immediately sold. We bought the 70% Powerhouse bar that is entirely grown, picked, fermented, etc. by Irmgard herself who grew the cocoa plants years ago! The bar is amazing and nothing like any other chocolate we've had before. The star of the show for us was their peppermint bark though! It was absolutely divine! It's not like normal peppermint bark that had candy cane pieces in it, and it tastes ever better. I would HIGHLY recommend stopping in to this shop for the chocolate and lovely conversation provided by the salesman!

Cute lil place right off the main road in Hanalei. Small store front and the staff is friendly and helpful. The chocolate selection is plentiful and lots of flavors. We chose the Dark & Stormy and the Hanalei PBJ. They were both very delicious. I'd definitely go back and try the other flavor options. Locally made. Make sure you plan to eat them right away or have a cooler to prevent melting. Worth trying if you're in the area.

Hands down the BEST chocolate I've ever tried. The owner was kind and helpful. We tried 3 bonbons and loved all 3. The shop itself is a sweet experience. Affordable locally made chocolate with plenty of options. If you are in Hanalei, GIVE THIS A TRY!!!!

Came across this cute little shop while strolling around the square. Good selection of chocolate-- I like the marzipan dark choc. The owners opened this shop as their retirement project, and I couldn't love it more! There is also a free library right outside for the chocoholic readers.

Dark & Stormy, Coconut Truffle and Coffee Drop bon bons were little pieces of heaven. All delicious with the Coffee Drop being my favorite being creamy, rich and bold. The business owner and retailer not only helped me and my husband during our visit, but educated us on the chocolate the family business makes and sells. I wanted to take a few more to take home for gifts and was informed of the ones that could hold up for upto 7 days. The bon bons had to be eaten that day, of course (happily!).

Tiny Chocolat shop, BIG on delicious, unique, handmade chocolates! Everything is scratch made with local fruits and chocolate from local cacao pods. A friend of mine recently moved to Kauai and when she came back to Portland for a visit, she brought me a box of the dark chocolate covered apple banana sticks. They were out of this world! Dangerously good! When I visited my friend and her husband in Kauai later that year, my first request was "take me to that chocolate shop! Located on the North shore at the far end of the Hanalei shopping center, Chocolat Hanalei is easy to miss. It's a tiny little light green standalone shop. Look for it! Find it! Inside there are glass cases filled with a variety of delicious treats, those with fruit often depending on what is available. The day I was there, they did not have the apple banana sticks so I bought the dark chocolate covered mango. Phenomenal! The contrast of flavors and texture was superb. The chocolate is so smooth. I also bought the dark chocolate covered caramel with sea salt and have yet to open the box. Once opened, they disappear. Fast! Wish they did mail order! Thankfully my friends come back to a Portland a few times a year and for my birthday and Christmas, they know what to bring me!

Finally after a failed attempt to visit on a last trip, I finally got to try this place that came highly recommended. Sandwich between a couple of other businesses dotting the road in Hanalei is this quant little shack of a place. It's a simple brown square building with a celadon-colored roof bearing "Chocolat Hanalei" in brown cursive. The inside is a tight space of similarly pale-green walls, various photos of cacao in different stages of cultivation, a simple glass counter filled with a variety of hand-made chocolates, and behind that the kindly employee and a refrigeration unit. The air is pleasantly heavy with bittersweet cacao and rain begins to tap on the roof that touches my head. Peppermint bark, pb&j, coconut truffles, coffee, passion fruit, 60% and up dark, all kinds of fine chocolates available. Each little fine treat runs between a buck or two and can be put in boxes of three or six. After a bit of decision making, I decided on some passion fruit domes, and a thing of their 70% extra dark bites. I was handed my two transparent boxes, each filled with three chocolate pieces. The extra dark came as little squares of dark brown goodness topped with a fine line of sea-salt. The domes had a funky tiger-stripe, swirly appearance. Both choices were worth the wait. Simply delicious from both treats. The dark punched my tastebuds with a deliciously bitter, slightly citrusy, but made slightly sweet thanks to the dart bite of salt. The passionfruit lands as my favorite, and not because my love for the fruit possibly gives me a bias. But a pleasantly sweet, milky, dark chocolate shell hides some fantastically tart and mouthwatering passionfruit curd. I wish I could just cram a bunch in my mouth, but alas I would burn a large hole in my wallet and not savor it as much. Chocolat Hanalei is a great little stop that serves charm as well as top-notch chocolate truffles. It's worth a stop. That is if you can catch it open.

I tried two truffles: the cacao nibs and the lilikoi. Surprisingly, I liked the lilikoi better. The chocolate is definitely high quality, very smooth and beautiful to boot. The shop owner (?) explained how most of the products are locally grown and produced. He was very friendly. This place is a must in Kauai.

Service was accommodating and attentive while we navigated the menu; they offered recommendation as well which we really appreciated it. To drink, I ordered the cold brew with mac milk. It was refreshing! Not too creamy if that's not your style. Also not too sweet - which I really liked. Friend ordered the banana bread which was good but not stand-out. To eat, we split a garlic shrimp plate, breakfast burrito, and churro French toast. The garlic shrimp was my pick and it was seasoned well. Some parts of the shrimp were a little too mushy but overall good. The best thing on that plate was the mac salad! The breakfast burrito was good but even better with the salsa provided. The star was truly the churro French toast - which is less of a French toast and more like a fried donut? Nonetheless, the sauce/cream it came with was divine and paired amazing with the cinnamon-y crispiness of the bread. A cute little spot in Hanalei worth trying if you find yourself along the north shore for brunch.

So during our trip to the…read morenorth shore of Kauai, we stopped into this location to explicitly get a variety for our lunch on the beach. It turned out great. Foodland is a Hawaiian original, founded in Honolulu on 1948 as Hawaii's first modern supermarket, and continues to be owned by the founder's family. It has 31 locations across the islands, but only one is still open in Kauai (the Lihue location closed during Covid). It's kinda hidden, so would need to explicitly look for it. It's a medium size supermarket. The poke station and hot deli are located together with the same associates manning both. It was busy and crowded around that area, so important to pull a number and wait. Once my number was called, got seven different items and the associate was patient. My wife doesn't like poke, so made herself a hot lunchbox for a good price (one Korean chicken drumstick at $2.50 each; cheddar cheese tots $2.79 for 0.31 lbs; one corn cob $1.29) while I made a deconstructed poke bowl ($3.38 for 2 scoops of white rice; chili garlic crunch ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs; Poke fresh ahi hawaiian style $11.56 for 0.34 lbs; california style ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs). My favorite was the California style, with the avocado. It reminds me of the taste of a California roll. Hate to admit it, but paying for almost triple the price for fresh ahi tuna isn't worth it...the from frozen was still great as a poke.

We found that the spicy tuna was softer and more delicious than the salmon pokes. I can see how people would rate the poke less than 5 stars if you purchase a flavor that you end up not being a fan of. We also loved the crispy chicken thighs from the hot food section. Surprisingly the poke and crispy chicken from Foodland ended up being one of my favorite meals in Kauai!!

With the beautiful weather and easy parking, the setting was perfect for a great time. But found out that it wasn't worth the 50 minute drive by itself, though there are plenty of places to visit on the north shore around that area...still worth the trip. We arrived a bit earlier than the 09:00 start time, so parked near the Hanalei Pier, and walked across the sand of the beach to enjoy the morning before arriving at the market. The market was fairly hopping by 09:30, with 30 different stalls selling their wares. My goal was to find two things to munch on first, as we walked the market: some sliced white pineapple and malasadas. It's clear that for food items, the market does an effective job of making sure a type of a food item is sold by only one vendor at the market...it really inflates the price. White pineapple is a lot less hardier for transport, thus hard to find on the mainland...but definitely a far superior pineapple in terms of sweetness and juiciness. The vendor that sold it here, presented it in slivers inside the typical cored pineapple container. I saw it right away, but noticed that there was no price....it ended up being $20 (I was committed at that point), which is pretty steep for maybe 1/4 of a pineapple. I found the malasada vendor, making it fresh on-site. We only wanted to taste, so got one for $3 non-filled...and it was disappointing...just OK. Should have tasted a lot better considering where we were. We circled the market multiple times, and ended up staying for about an hour. It's a market geared towards tourists like me, not locals: you are not going to find a local restauranteur looking for produce for his/her dinner menu here. Speaking of being a tourist: did end up buying a nice print of nearby Anini beach that we will frame at our home to remind us of Kauai...the artist was super grateful. The picture itself gave me a mission to find that view at Anini (as we were heading there next).
