For the appetizer/shareable items, the spicy tuna on crispy rice was the standout. Their take on it is more on the flat shape which made it easier and more enjoyable to eat, especially since the rice wasn't overly crunchy like other places. The sushi roll options were plenty and came in pieces of 4 or 8 which was helpful in avoiding over ordering. The nigiri options were fair and the fish quality was a solid 3.5/5, good but definitely could have been better as some pieces didn't taste very fresh. Although the fish to rice ratio was good in that you didn't get too full right away. Customer service was friendly and attentive despite only having 2 servers at the time we went. My friends had recommended Chobop to me after their first visit, so we came in on Wednesday night to give it a try. We were aware that we were arriving quite close to closing for an AYCE dinner. We would get there around 8:30 and they were closing at 10 PM so we made sure to call before coming in. They let us know that they would be doing last call at 9:30, and that they usually do last seating for AYCE around the time we would arrive so it would be okay as long as we were fine with the last order time, which we were. When we came in, the restaurant was clean and spacious, quite empty which was to be expected. I enjoyed the ordering system, which consisted of standard sushi paper order, but had sides and appetizers through a website on your phone. Our server was very friendly and quick with our orders. The sushi quality was good overall, but many of our nigiri were quite misshapen, and rice portions were a bit on the small side for me (although many find that to be a plus for AYCE sushi). The food wasn't really an issue at all though, and we enjoyed our meal. One issue we had was that as close as we were to closing, we started to be quite rushed by the staff. Even before 9 PM, which is an hour before closing, we were asked if we were finished ordering rolls (we had only done one round with 2 roll orders), and it felt like we ought to say that we were. Then, sometime around 9:15, they asked if we were done ordering appetizers or hot food. While I very much understand that staff hopes to wrap things up asap before closing, we felt like that was the whole point of having a designated "last call" time of 9:30. Being pressured to stop ordering certain menu items well before then felt a little disappointing considering a meal costs around $50 per person without any drinks or additional premium items. Why do we have to ask for them for the second round and why do we have to see them START making the order after we ask vs seeing the table empty, plates gone, and not making it automatically? We came at 6 so there was not much of a line on a Friday night. I love that the rice quantity of the sushi is controlled and not overwhelming. The rice to fish ratio is very good!! I went to an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant today (Monday) around noon by myself. The restaurant offered three pricing options -- I chose the Premium option for $39.99, not the regular lunch one. The sushi quality was excellent, especially the seared salmon sushi, which was perfectly done. The other sushi items were also fresh and tasty. However, the cooked dishes were just average, especially the pork ones, which I wouldn't order again. Overall, I think the $39.99 was well worth it for the sushi quality alone. The environment was bright, spacious, and clean. There were about four or five staff members working, and only three tables of customers including me -- pretty quiet for a Monday lunch. Normally, I'm a big eater at All You Can Eat places, and I usually tip around 80% because I know the servers have to bring me food multiple times. But today, when an elderly lady at another table asked about the menu, the waiter explained there were three price levels. She seemed to think I had ordered the $29 lunch instead of the Premium one and kept glancing my way. That made me a little uncomfortable. So, although the food was great, I ended up giving a smaller tip than usual, even though the service itself was fine. Well, I wasn't planning on writing a Yelp review. I was just going to quietly eat, pay my bill, and vow never to return. But then the owner/manager/elderly woman decided to waltz over to our table at the end--apparently with the sole purpose of scolding us. She ever-so-graciously informed us that since it wasn't busy today it was "okay" we stayed two and a half hours, but if it ever is busy, we should really respect the sacred 90-minute dining window. The funniest part? According to her math, we'd been sitting there for two and a half hours... which is impressive, considering we hadn't even been in the restaurant that long. Time clearly runs on a different clock here. We even tried to respectfully point out that the service was painfully slow and most of our time was spent just waiting for food. Our third round of entrées didn't even show up until after the 90-minute mark she's so protective of--so apparently, we were expected to eat food that hadn't even arrived yet. Magical. And let's talk about these "rules." You're only allowed three rounds of ordering, capped at 10 pieces of sushi per person, unless you manage to finish within the 90 minutes--in which case, they'll give you another sheet. Cute idea in theory, but totally impossible when the service is so slow that by the time your third round finally crawls out of the kitchen, your 90 minutes are already up. I'm not sure what kind of games they're playing or what kind of under-the-table policy this is supposed to be, but it just feels unfair. On top of that, the amount of times we had to literally wave down a worker just to get service was ridiculous. And then, after all of that, to be scolded like children at the end of our meal was not only unnecessary but downright disrespectful. My first visit to Chobop was amazing! We went on a Sunday evening around 4:30 and were seated right away. The décor has a modern Japanese feel, and it's a pretty low-key AYCE sushi spot that definitely deserves more attention. The hostess was very friendly and, since it was our first time at this place, she clearly explained how ordering works. You place sushi orders on a paper menu, but appetizers from the kitchen are ordered by scanning a QR code on your phone. For the first round, you're limited to 10 pieces of nigiri per person, but in the second and third rounds you can order as much as you'd like. If you choose the premium option(about $40 pp)instead of the regular one, you get access to premium nigiri and carpaccio, though those are limited to about 1-2 pieces per person. We ordered all of the premium items, including uni, toro, bluefin tuna, sweet shrimp, and the salmon carpaccio. The uni was surprisingly good--not too fishy at all. For regular nigiri, we had salmon belly, king scallop, seared salmon, and eel, and everything was delicious. We also tried the spicy pom pom roll, which was just okay for me since it had a bit too much rice. The Pepper Me Crazy roll was definitely better. For appetizers, we ordered shishito peppers, baked mussels, and jalapeño bombs. On weekends the lower tier class for $29.99 is not available over the weekend. We tried a few apps: edamame, gyoza (pretty meaty but a little greasy), and spicy tuna on crispy rice (not bad, pretty generous portions). For myself, I got the chirashi bowl so I could get a variety of fish with some seasoned rice and it was a solid bowl. This place is newly AYCE, and it pretty much reflects that in the experience we had here. It took literally a whole hour to get our carpaccio, while the other premium ones came after about half an hour. The place was only at about half capacity as well. We think later on, they ran out of fish because we were missing some of the fish we ordered and they stopped taking customers about an hour before closing. However, the premium fish (especially the bluefin tuna and toro) was one of the best we've had. The uni was pretty nasty though and the octopus was straight up like eating rubber. We appreciated the variety of appetizers, but wished they gave smaller portions so we could try more things. We waited for a table, and once we were finally seated, our server (with pink hair) only brought us water and ginger--no chopsticks or further assistance. He managed the tables quickly even though we had to wait more than 30 minutes due to the crowd so that's understandable. With the amounts of food we ordered (sorry I forgot to take pictures. Will do next time ). The price per person is reasonably. Especially, we paid only 1/2 price for our kids since my 8 years old daughter could not eat sushi, no rare. I do not believe that the yelp rating shown here is accurate or reliable to the changed management or business name. They changed their concept to AYCE and rebranded their name. Never had I had an experience where the food had to be requested to be remade due to hair found in food or seafood quality so poor it smelled and came deformed on the plate. Came to Sushi Imari in Costa Mesa after reading great reviews and seeing high ratings on Yelp. I arrived at 5 pm and there was only one group ahead of us, so we were seated within 5 minutes.
