A Step Back in Time at Chole's Diner -- Massillon, Ohio Take the Trip, your Next Adventure is waiting. Today, we time traveled--not with a DeLorean or a flux capacitor, but through the doors of Chole's Diner in Massillon, Ohio. This place isn't just a restaurant; it's a full-on retro experience that throws you straight back into the golden era of the 1950s and 60s. From the moment you walk in, you're transported back to a simpler time--surrounded inside by classic cars, bikes, and motorcycles. Neon signs light up every corner with electric charm, and the jukebox hums in the background like it's always been there. If you're into the vibe of leather jackets, poodle skirts, and the golden days of rock 'n' roll, Chole's delivers. The menu sticks to that classic diner comfort zone--burgers, coneys, fries, and hand-spun milkshakes. I went with Chole's Famous Sliders--three mini burgers topped with my choice of cheese and crisp pickle slices. The meal came with a choice of fresh-cut fries or slaw, but I upgraded to beer-battered onion rings for just $2 more. The sliders were good--simple, solid diner food with a nostalgic flair. Not mind-blowing, but definitely satisfying. My wife chose the Texas Burger--a hearty sandwich topped with pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce, and a crispy stack of onion rings right on the burger itself. She stuck with the fresh-cut fries. While she really enjoyed the burger, the fries didn't quite hit the mark--they were undercooked and a little limp, missing that golden crisp we were hoping for. Our server was friendly, attentive, and really leaned into the cheerful spirit of the place, which added a nice touch to the visit. Bottom line: Come for the atmosphere, soak in the retro aesthetic, and enjoy some classic diner food done well enough to satisfy your craving. It's a fun stop if you're cruising through Massillon or just in the mood to step out of 2025 and into the rockin' world of the 50s and 60s.

Atmosphere: This place is really cool on the inside. The decor with all the cars and bikes and signs really adds to the nostalgic feel of the diner. In this review, service and food go hand in hand. Our server was Lauren. She's nice enough. We had a nice giggle over the fact that I ordered a shot of whiskey neat and she served this little shot in a 16oz glass. When we ordered food is when absolutely everything went downhill. I ordered a coney with onion rings. I thought that onion rings came with it (with an up-charge) but apparently you only get a side when you order 2 coneys. My partner ordered a Philly cheesesteak with mushrooms added to it. When our food came out, the bun of my coney was dissolved. Someone in the kitchen put coney sauce on the bottom of the bun, then the hotdog, then more coney sauce. I'm sorry. That makes zero sense. When Lauren came back, I told her the issue and she asked if I just wanted a new bun. I said that was fine. A couple minutes later she brings me a plain ice cold bun. I said "um... can't I get this toasted?". She told me "it doesn't come toasted". So I showed her the golden brown sides of the dissolved bun and I said "that's not toasted?" She said she would get it toasted. About 5 minutes later (and my coney get cold at this point), she brings back the bun and proceeds to tell me "sorry the cooks toast them sometimes and sometimes they don't" Ok... but if this is a remake, and you are aware that 50% of the time (although I think that's a straight up lie), wouldn't you want to make sure they toast this one since there was an issue? Well, I look at the bun and it's split on the bottom. At that point I'm pissed. I'm hungry and so annoyed. She brings the full check with no discounts for the inconvenience, sets it right next to the empty soda she never refilled for me or even asked. I told her to take my food off because I was eating it. The split empty bun still on my plate so she should have asked what was wrong or done absolutely anything. But nothing. She even charged me just under $6 for the onion rings. Just horrible service. Someone can't eat because the bun was messed up twice and you proceed to still charge for the cold onion rings that sat there. Maybe 2 were eaten between the two of us. We were planning on going the next day to try the breakfast but nope. The server who took our payment and wished us a nice day was very pleasant. Too bad she wasn't our server. Just so many issues that could have been avoided and things she could have done differently and reacted differently

We stopped here on Christmas Eve morning as we were traveling home from a quick birthday getaway. We accidentally found this place and so glad we did. It is so cute and kitschy with all the old cars, bikes and memorabilia everywhere. The menu has basic diner type food breakfast and lunch.

Stopped in for breakfast and it hit the spot. Nice ambiance and very inexpensive, they use a good quality local coffee roaster and it comes free with the purchase of breakfast. Two eggs, toast, and coffee cost less than five dollars. If you're looking for breakfast one morning definitely consider trying here.

Very cute little place in the downtown area. We had the cheeseburger sliders with tater tots and onion rings. Food was great, not overly priced and our waitress was very sweet and friendly.

We arrived with a party of 15. They took good care of us. Fast service and very good food.

Really neat place with lots of cars and memorabilia. They serve sliders, dogs and chicken fingers. $22.00 for a double and a single slider with cheese, large fries, onion rings and 2 drinks. Sliders a bit on the smaller side, but everything is pretty good. Next time we'll try the milkshakes and malts. Were told they have secret ingredients!

Fred's Diner is a sparkling diamond of a place that so many locals I mentioned it to were still…read moreunaware of. That's mostly due to location. It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Akron but it's off the beaten path. All locals (except me) in here. When I went (10AM Friday) the place was almost full, and I was dining alone, so I sat at the counter, happily next to the kitchen. To look at the kitchen was like looking inside a bee hive, bustling with activity but barely a sound. I could just make out what was being calmly stated "2 Silver Dollar, Salmon, Country Fried, 2 Over Easy..." It was fun to watch, but what was important was the output. It took just over 6 minutes from the time I order until it was sitting in front of me, and everything was perfect! The waitresses were so efficient. I saw my order hit the window and in about 12 seconds it was delivered. They were so customer focused, they were (jokingly) fighting over refilling my tea. When I was done and paid for I waited outside for Uber to pick me up (3 min). I looked back on what I'd just experienced, and snapped a picture of the two parking lots of cars for Fred's Diner. I counted and there were 32 cars at Fred's. OK maybe 10 were staff so 22 cars for customers, let's say on average there were 2 customers per car (remember I walked here so no car for me). By my calculation, Fred's was feeding 44 people every 30 minutes or so. No wonder they're only open 4 days a week and only for breakfast - lunch. I calculate they might serve 3200 meals in those 4 days, and then take 3 days off to get ready for the next week. I love this place. Wish I lived here so I could come more often.

I particularly appreciate that they use real potatoes for their hashbrowns, not the frozen/freeze dried crap most places serve up these days. The service was great, coffee was strong, and our bellies are fullllll.
