Had them come out to fertilize 3 trees with 2 gallons of extra fertilizer do myself over the next year. Charge $775 which was steep, but needed to be done. Called a week later to have a small tree removed. I was informed there is a minimum cost of $650. When I explained I had just spent $775 the response was this was a new service and that's the standard minimum. My guess is it would have taken 2 people easily less than an hour to complete. So, thinking back the the fertilizing, I see how they came up with the $775 when there is a $650 minimum which was never explained to me for the initial visit. Stay away from this company. Ridiculously expensive and no common sense as a business in general. Plenty of other places to go. read more

We had an old chinese elm in desperate need of attention. Chip came out to give us an estimate. We weren't scheduled to have the work done until after Labor Day but they were able to fit us in a week early. Humberto and his crew showed up, got the work done, and left our yard looking better than it did before they arrived. They even cleaned up the street where they hauled the branches out to feed into the wood chipper. The whole process took less time than we had anticipated. We don't know if our elm will make it, only time will tell, but we do know it was in good hands with Humberto and crew at Chip's Tree Service. read more

CHIP'S TREE SERVICE-CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK KILLED OUR TREES We called Chip's Tree Service, LLC (formerly A Chip Off the Old Block, LLC) to trim six (6) mature palm trees in June 2023. Chip's Tree Service, LLC is NOT licensed/bonded, and NOT on the BBB; uses Chip Off the Old Block name on BBB. These trees were healthy, about 15 feet tall, and had been in place at least 15 years, but likely since 2002. Their arborists sold us on having Chip's do a fertilizer treatment that they would pour directly onto the palm crowns. No mention of any risks. On July 6, 2023, their crew showed up and trimmed the trees. On July 7, they returned and poured a liquid solution directly onto the tree crowns. By August 15, 2023, three (3) of the palm trees in the backyard were dead. The fronds dropped and died at the crown. These trees had stood the test of time for years, they were healthy, regularly watered and we changed nothing in their regimen EXCEPT the "treatment" poured onto the crowns by Chip's. A few weeks after their "treatment", these trees were dead at the crown and had to be removed and replaced at our expense. We have had no issues with any other trees dying, only the ones they "treated". (We are waiting to see if the other 3 trees they treated will make it). We consulted with a local tree nursery which agreed that the palms were dead from the crowns, not the roots, and that was NOT due to this year's hot summer, as Chip's claims. We reached out to Chip's repeatedly. They denied any liability (seriously, your treatment and our trees dying is a coincidence?!?!) and had the audacity to suggest that they would remove the dead trees for another $950. (another company removed them for about half that). They gave us a $375 refund for the "treatment". Replacement cost of comparable palms will cost easily $3000 per tree. We had to opt for a lesser version. So far, it has cost us $2360 for 2 new smaller trees, $450 tree removal, $625 paid to Chip's incl. the partial refund, and loss of our trees negatively impacted our beautiful back yard and property. Their website claims they guaranty their work, but that is obviously not the case. Buyer beware! read more

We got several bids and selected Chip off the old Block. There was a 70' pine and a 60' Elm that needed to go. They showed up at 7;30am did the job in about 90 minutes. They left the place looking better than they found it. This is a Condo Community and we have a lot of trees. The Arborist came originally to bid the job and he was a very nice and knowledgeable man named Jack. They injected the stump of the Elm because the roots were breaking pipes and driveways. This is a business that does not keep its word. I was told they would remove and replace my tree that they had serviced in an effort to save it. they came to see the tree and told me that it absolutely could be saved. they injected nutrients into the root ball and trimmed it. It died within a few months after the treatment. I spoke to two different people with the company who told me they would remove that dead tree - but they did not. They set a time and day to come, I waited. They sent someone with a new tree. but the old, dead tree was still there and needed to be removed. They later came back to pick up the new citrus tree claiming it had been brought to the wrong address??? They later called and told me they would not remove the dead tree or bring a new tree and that they owed me nothing! I am a senior citizen and was very confused by this whole thing. Carlos and his team of three men arrived on time and with a short explanation of what needed to be done, they quickly radicaly trimmed two large bushes and a grapefruit tree that had grown onto the roof. They were finished in less than a half hour and left nothing behind. The tree was especially impressive because the team trimmed it so that it was far enough away from the Arizona Room and yet it was shaped professionally like it hadn't been touched. The bushes were trimmed low and don't clutter the entrance to the walled courtyard anymore. It was a top notch job and my wife and I are very pleased. Asked to schedule and the person answering the phone said she couldn't schedule me with no offer to transfer to someone who could. She did provide the number of the arborist/Estimator. Humberto and his tree trimming crew of Chips Tree Service just finished trimming my pecan tree in Tempe. They were so fast and did an excellent job. The week prior they also trimmed two large branches from a eucalyptus and a mulberry tree. They clean up the yard afterwards, so the debris is gone and the yard looks better than before. Each time they were amazingly professional in their service and friendly and accommodating and able to communicate very well. Brianna in the Chips Tree Service office was great at scheduling and keeping me informed, especially after the job was delayed a few days in order to remove some bees in one of the trees. The rescheduling was done within days, not weeks. The original scheduling after agreeing to the estimate was also quick, days not weeks afterwards. I have had trees trimmed by Chip off the Old Block for several years and their crews have always done a good job. However, I made the mistake of giving them my recent hardscaping business. Disastrous: - Arborist/salesman contradicted many aspects of the job during the project - Two different 3rd party vendors were used to do the work, I was not told they outsourced the job - I had to micro-manage the whole project as crews had inaccurate work orders - My job was rescheduled at last minute and took longer than initially committed - Arborist/salesman promised things that the crew refused to do because it wasn't on the work order - I was put in hot water with my HOA when the crew unexpectedly showed up with a huge dumpster. The company failed to advise me of this before hand - it requires HOA pre-approval - I have yet to hear back from the office manager when I reached out on Nov 27th to voice my concerns/frustrations and give feedback. They show up on time, even early, and leave my yard and porch cleaner than when they arrive. My trees are quite large and in the past previous services have left chunks of branches and leaves, but not this crew. The actual work crew does amazing work. They were quick and the work was quality. They would get five stars alone! However the scheduler and sales people need to work on their communication. Sales person had no issue taking money up front, letting us know the scheduler will call. I had to call multiple times before I finally find out that the scheduler takes 24 hours before getting back to you. Sales person left that out. Chips Tree Service/Chip off the Block provides incredibly poor service and does not follow through on their commitments for the service requested. They make appointments and then repeatedly cancel them at the last minute. The timeline they give for the completion of a project was completely inaccurate. They charge for a particular service, but do not fully complete that service. After delaying my project for over seven weeks, they promised a refund for services not rendered, and I have waited over two weeks for that refund. I had to drive to their office many miles away from my home in order to get my refund check. I would NEVER recommend this company. read more

I don't like writing bad reviews but I told them that I was going to and, unlike them, I stand by my word. First, the quality has really gone downhill since the new ownership. My whole experience would be very lengthy so I will break it down. 1) I had to explain 6 or 7 times to office staff what I wanted done. 2) Appointments were not kept. 3) Work was not completed as discussed causing multiple days of having to arrange my schedule to accommodate them. 4) The quality of work was not the same as prior services. 5) They messed up my patio with their equipment so I had to give them yet another day of my time for them to come out and fix it. 6) One particular supervisor in the office is extremely unprofessional, rude and condescending. After speaking with supervisors, I finally was able to get them to discount the service. Didn't always necessarily follow my requests on trimming the huge tree in my front yard. Most recently I scheduled an appointment, took the time off from work, and they didn't bother to show. I had chip off the old block trim my 75 ft Aleppo Pine tree and the crew did a wonderful job. They arrived early and started on the tree and then the crane arrived . They were very careful with my property and my neighbor's property because the tree limbs were hanging over both our roofs. The two tree climbers were awesome! The crew cleaned up our yards, roofs, and the street. Jacob came to my house twice and explained everything that needed to be done to keep my tree alive because I did not want to have it removed due to we love our tree. All in all the crew was at my house for two and a half hours and the tree looks fantastic. I recommend them to anyone who needs tree service. read more

Chips tree service gave me 3 bids. The first was to skin my palms, Did a great job with that. The second was to remove 3 large pine trees, Did a great job with that. The third was to remove an Olive tree, ( that was done at the same time the pine trees were removed ) and remove the root ball. This is where my issue came. They charged $250 to remove the Olive tree. That was OK. They charge $1000 to remove the root ball. I was told by their office when I asked if they could plant my palm at the same time that there would not be enough time in the day because the root ball removal would take too long. 2 men arrived at 7:30, dug and used a chain saw to cut it out about 2 feet deep and were packed up and left by 8:30. The photos show the job they left. I find it hard to believe that they could charge $500 per hour for each man to do that job. When asked about it Mitchel said they underbid the job it and charge $100 an inch for root removal. When he later spoke to my husband he acted like he had never had a conversation with me. He said you signed a contract, it is $1000. I did sign the contract. Second issue. I did not know that they kept my credit card number on file and billed the balance without sending me a final bill or letting me know that they were going to charged on it. I would highly recommend no one use this company. This is how the job was left. read more

They're REALLY good at deceiving customers, pointing fingers at other employees, and ultimately pointing fingers at the customer. This is NOT a business you want to hire. Miscommunication, empty promises, and lack of follow-through: I asked them to come out and finish the job, as in staking the trees they planted two weeks ago, and putting rocks back around the trees as they had been. (By the way, some of the rocks were stacked up around the tree beds when they removed them but quite a few of them were thrown into our basil plants. Nice.) I couldn't believe one of the responses to my pleas for them to just stake our new trees as they had said they would do (I had already replaced a lot of the rocks myself) was "How about we stake your trees and instead of us charging you for that, you give us a good review?" How about you do the job as you had said you would and THEN I leave you a good review? They were supposed to: In the backyard, take the stumps from the dead trees out of the planters, replace them with new trees (that WE bought), trim the other trees in the yard, check the sprinklers, and then return the rocks to the planters. They said they would "clean up the front yard of leaves" but when asked if they could pull a couple of weeds, they said no, they're tree guys. What they did: Left little rocks and dirt clumps all through our lawn in back. Took out the stumps, leaving quite a few dead roots in the planters. Planted the two new trees and trimmed existing trees. The guy who was supposed to check the sprinklers didn't come out for a few days afterward and that arrival was a guessing game. (He did finally show up.) We were told the staking guy would come out in a day or two after that. A week later, nothing. Denied promising the install of stakes, the return of the rocks, asked for a good review in return for them doing what they should of in the first place, and said my husband should of been the one calling them to handle the situation. Also, before I called them and spoke to Mitchell, who asked for the good review, and then received a call from Mike, who started the conversation with a condescending tone, they hadn't charged us for the second half of the project. Once my call with Mike was over, they charged us immediately. By the way, Mike was willing to throw Mitchell completely under the bus by firing him.
