Five stars. Ching's Punaluu Store was a lifesaver on my epic Dick Evan's Road Race in August 2024, during Hurricane Hone. I was bonking out by the time I reached here and I had no nutrition or hydration left on my bike. The food I had was a spam musubi and a Coke. Boy, it was a lifesaver indeed! The service was great. The auntie helming the cash register was friendly and allowed me to lean my bike inside of the store while I grabbed my stuff (didn't want it to get stolen left outside). Love this family store in Punaluu. Came to the coffee shop at 8 am this morning because it's under new management and has a new name called Coffee Cove Hawai'i (formerly Keao's Coffee). Stopped in the store to buy spam musubi that includes egg & daikon (this one sells out by 9 am), maki sushi (so fresh and ono), butter mochi, fried chicken, celery. So nice to get all this in one place PLUS great Coconut Vanilla Latte with almond milk, Matcha Latte, Mocha Macadamia Nut Latte, and an Acai bowl! Never tasted anything better, came to this store last year, and tried the butter mochi for the first time, came back here again yesterday and it was unfortunately sold out. The owner said he will have his dad bake some. We bought the whole pan. The brownies here are awesome!! $1.50 for a brownie that would easily be $7 in Canada. Good assortment of drinks. They sell butter mocha- it's my first time trying it and it's pretty good w respect to the flavour, but I found the texture a bit grainy. That being said, I don't know what makes a good butter mochi. Charming Mom & Pop family store with the sweetest owners. They made our family Sunday picnic perfect with all their Ono bento items, salmon special, fresh sushi, & Samurai for the kids. Just across the highway is also the most picturesque beach spot. Couldn't ask for a better spot to enjoy some relaxing family quality time. My family frequents this spot as it is a perfect place to stop and pickup snacks for the beach. Everything from maki sushi, Korean fried chicken, poke, and butter mochi. Staff is always friendly. While driving up to the north shore, we got a bit hungry so decided to stop for snacks. I ordered banana bread, butter mochi, and this sushi looking thing. The clerk called it a local sushi. The rice was a little vinegary, the tuna tasted like canned or fried tuna, I think there was yellow cucumber, and I have no idea what the bright green color is (see picture). Although there wasn't a good rice to filling ratio, the combination of flavors was still tasty. It was also really cheap but I forgot how much. I think all 3 things cost less than $8. The banana bread and butter mochi were so good! So soft and flavorful. I would plan to make snack stops here on our way to the North Shore again. read more

Whenever my wife and I go holoholo around the island we always stop at Ching's to buy some road snacks and maybe even a T-shirt. I love mom and pop stores and Ching's has a variety of snacks and small portion pupus to warrant stopping here. This time we purchased 2 beers and a bag of wonderful boiled peanuts for $6.22, then we sat at a table provided on the beach where we could enjoy our refreshments and the ocean view. The tables and chairs are located directly across the street from the store. We had to hold back on the peanuts because we almost ate them all and we were still going to Waiahole Poi Factory for lunch. There are other snacks at Ching's such as fried mochiko chicken portioned in small containers with rice and priced by the pound. There are also dried fish snacks such as dried Aku and a limited selection on poke. You have to stop by these stores because someday they will all disappear. read more

This little store was an awesome place to stop and recharge on the way to the north shore. It's your normal mom and pop store and the female clerk was hilarious, as she was sweet and sassy at the same time. The butter mochi came in large squares and was ridiculously good. There's a shrimp truck outside the store and I'm not sure if it's connected but if not, it was definitely drawing in business to the store. A historic shop when you're making that windward side drive. Can't miss this iconic red shop on the side of the road. It's quaint, it's cute, the workers are friendly, the food is no frills good, super local snacks. These mom & pop crack seed store like establishments are dying around the island and I would hate to see this one go, so I needed to write this review. It's nothing fancy but it definitely brings that old Hawaii nostalgia as soon as you step in. Local treats & snacks (boiled peanuts, poke, bentos, beer, frozen treats, etc) and random nick nacks all through the store. Make sure to try the musubis and the samurai ice cream! It's always a treat to do a road trip around the island and I always look forward to making this stop, and to remember to take life slow...just like the good ol' days and this store definitely reminds me of that. My only reason for going in was to get a soda to drink and chips to eat with my food from Shrimp Shack next door. Not very often I feel unwelcomed, but this is one of them. Came the first time and thought the cashier was having a bad day. No big deal. Came the second day and not a SINGLE word or thank you. I'm a friendly person. Two people ahead of me got more pleasantries. Would have bought more food, but the place looks sketchy. The butter mochi tastes like butt by the way. Out of Towners clearly are NOT welcome here. Come for the canned drinks and that's it. The view of the beach and Shrimp Shack are the only upsides to this joint. read more

I passed by here many times before in the past. But, I never did stop here to try and see as to what they have here. I noticed that they have a sign out in front of the store of homemade baked good. As I was passing by, there was plenty parking and I knew that it was meant to be to try here. So, I parked and went inside to see what Homemade baked goodies that they still had left. I bought a bread pudding, butter mochi, sweet egg portuguese sausage furikake musubi. To me, the bread pudding tasted like it was made with wheat bread instead of white bread. It had that taste that you knew that it was wheat bread if you closed your eyes and tasted it. The butter mochi was soft, chewy and tasted good. The musubi was different from from anyplace that I tried before. The sweetness of the egg, the spiciness of the portuguese sausage, the saltiness of the furikake and the rice all went together very well. I am glad that I tried here. I will try their plate lunches next time. read more

On my Sunday road trip around the island with Kac and Moda, we made a quick stop at Chings' Punaluu Store. We knew where we wanted to eat lunch (Opal Thai, see my review) *shameless plug*, but we didn't know what we were going to have to hold us over. Queue, Chings'. We picked up a few musubis, a container of poke and some of that butter mochi. The musubis were aight. Good. but nothing really special. The butter mochi was awesome and the poke was super fresh. Everything created a perfect snack to hold us over to an awesome lunch. Normally, I don't go to many of these mom and pop general stores. However, when you are going around the island on a sunny day, you will more than likely find your way to one of them. I will definitely recommend stopping at Chings', but I will also recommend stopping at ANY mom and pop store. Hawaii is home for many small businesses and we need to support them. read more
