Edit: Will make an update review after eating here with new owners. This review I wanted to make but I realized awhile back the owners switch so it doesn't apply. The 5 stars is for the old owners and I'll make a separate review for the new ones, but when I ate here this is by far my favorite Chinese place in Texas. The best food, the best service, yes the outside storefront looks a little shady but it's there to hide the amazing flavors and taste. Get the soft shell crab rice if still available. I hope new owners can keep up. read more

This place has clearly not been updated since they opened decades ago. Even the little signs are like cracked tape and all. I went here bc of a TikTok I saw. The food is like ok. But I prefer other Chinese American estabpienI can't really explain it. The TikTok just made it seem like I'd be getting super good food and I left still hungry since we didn't finish all our food. read more

Tried this BEFORE the new wonders took over. So hard to say if quality remained the same. But I finally tried the hype. The chicken wings are a MUST. The pork chops also great but can be fried super crispy almost broke my tooth. Typical Chinese restaurant service and good food read more

Amazing food !!! Service is great friendly environment. Best Chinese food in the city.

So disappointed in the new ownership and the quality of the good!!!! So sad!!! The fried ribs we had were disgustingly hard and small, truly upsetting this has been a family staple for over 20+ years! ALL THE RECIPES ARE DIFFERENT! They say it's the same cook but the quality is not there anymore! Bring back that old owners out ask for the recipe for the fried ribs!!! read more

How is this placed not packed constantly?! Hands down some of the best Cantonese we've ever at the most lowest prices. We ordered 7 delicious dishes and it was $90!! The service was so quick and the ladies were so sweet and attentive! By far one of our favorite places now. 5/5! Free outside parking read more

The fried pork ribs are to die for!!!!!!! I could eat this for days. The fried rice is one of the best in the city- it's got a rich dark color to it and a nice flame kissed aroma. The chicken wings are incredibly crispy and have a lovely taste- less is absolutely more. Portions are generous for the price. This is my new go to for Chinese read more

Wow, the last time I ate here was in 2001. You read it right! I rarely come to this part of town as it isn't safe, especially at night. Besides there are so many good options inside the Beltway. Had the Cantonese pan fried crispy noodles, Beijing style pork ribs and fish tofus. Big portions and tasted ok. Didn't care for the fish tofus since they tasted a bit bitter. A bit too dry on the ribs but good flavor. Glad I took my husband to this hole in a wall place. No change in decoration and serve staff. read more

I had the Hunan Beef Lunch Special for $6.99. It came with fried rice, a small eggroll, and a bowl of Hot Sour soup. The Hot Sour soup was very thick. I thought there were tiny bits of bone. It didn't taste good. The fried rice had no flavor. The rice grains were tiny like they came broken from the bottom of the bag. The eggroll wasn't like any eggroll I'd ever had before. I'm not sure what was inside and I wouldn't say I liked it. The Hunan Beef was the worst part. The beef was thickly coated with a brown caramel sauce that was too sweet. I was expecting some peppery heat because the menu displayed a pepper symbol next to the menu item. There was no heat or spices that I could taste. Even the iced tea was weak. The booth we sat in was torn and ripped. When I sat down, I could feel the springs underneath. All of the booths looked the same way. When the waitress came to the table, she placed 2 forks with paper napkins on the table. I guess she was too tired to separate them for the two of us. This was a horrible visit. You could not pay me to go back. read more

This Chinese restaurant has a terrible outside appearance. The parking lot has no lines and rutty, and the exterior is old and in disrepair. Then you walk in and find that the inside is exactly the same way. This restaurant is typical of one from 30-50 years ago - fairly unkempt, nasty restrooms, unpleasant servers, indecipherable bill (written in Chinese) inconsistent with the menu prices, The dining experience is terrible. I felt pressured to order quickly, to eat hastily, and get out. If you have low tolerance for uncleanliness, do not enter the restrooms. I think you walk out of the restroom dirtier than when you walked in. Despite all these negatives, the food is very authentically Cantonese Chinese, which is not common in this city now. The food is well cooked and flavorful. My favorite dishes were the steamed ground pork with salted fish, anything salt and toasted (especially the ribs), the double fried chow mein,, and salted fish chicken fried rice. If you can tolerate the much less than high class dining atmosphere, poor service, and the inaccurate pricing, the food is well worth it. read more

This place holds a special place in my heart, since I have been coming here ever since I was a kid. Chinese American brings classic Chinese dishes to your everyday lifestyle! We are well acquainted with the staff there, and we know them very well (thanks to past restaurant experiences as well!) Chinese American is offering both dine-in and take-out during this period of COVID. The history of this restaurant along the same shopping strip has been here for a very long time, and people love coming here! Our tradition has always been a family dinner, or when we would go fishing, we would bring in a fish for them to cook for us and share with our family and friends! Some of my favorite items are: Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice Beef with Chinese Broccoli House Special Pan Fried Noodles If you are around the area, the lunch specials/menu is super awesome! I recommend coming here even if you gotta travel a little bit to get there! read more

The BEST fried eggplants EVER! SOOOOOO DELICIOUS! If I knew it was that good, I absolutely would have bought an extra order so that I could have a full order of those super crispy, super yummy beer battered eggplants all to myself! On the other hand, everything else that I had yesterday, including egg fuyong, lobsters w/ fried noodles, braised pork belly w/ taro, cellophane noodle stew w/ shrimp, was just alright. Anyways, I'm soooooo going back to buy more fried eggplants! Service is good, price is unbeatable. The place is in shabby conditions but who cares *shrugs* Just don't drive a fancy car! I've been coming here almost 10 years now. The one thing I can say about this place is they are consistent. They don't tweak recipes. The recipe, the portions nothing changed. My waitress remembered my kids when they were little. Food was great. This week I tried the Egg Foo Young with pork very good. We tried their Beijing ribs they were great. I wish they were closer but we make the drive. Call ahead and make sure they are open. One weird day of the week they are closed, I can't remember if it's Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. read more

Chinese American - Assorted dishes (@cuongfoodcius) - Chinese Near Me - Houston, Texas

It's really funny that this place calls itself 'Chinese American'. Quite the opposite of what the name implies, it actually serves pretty authentic Chinese food. You can tell because Chinese people actually eat here! There's salted fish, intestines and century egg - stuff you won't find in a typical Chinese American place. Located in an area that doesn't look all that safe, this place is really the definition of hole-in-the-wall. We would not have come here if we had not found out about it from our Chinese friends. The ambience is not great, but the value is awesome - you get large portions of great Chinese food for not much money. If this is up your alley, this place is worth checking out! read more

Definitely still one of the best Cantonese foods. It's the perfect example of a hole-in-the-wall place. Don't expect fancy decor, clean floors, or bathrooms. Expect good food at a really affordable price. For a family of 10 with 10 dishes, it came out to around $120 not including the tip. read more

Well, hole in the wall is one thing, but making eye contact with a live roach on the counter as you're picking up your order after ordering online 2 hours prior for a scheduled pick up... I like to take risks. And I certainly tempted fate for not getting food poisoning. The staff is older and they have roaches so let's not even judge the service. Why did I go here you ask? EGG FOO YOUNG! They have decent reviews for it; was super happy they use bean sprouts and not cabbage, and I could tell from pictures that their gravy is savory and not sweet. Honestly, I may flip a coin and get their EFY again, doubt it, but I didn't die. The bitter melon and beef was to try and YUCK, bittermelon is literally what it sounds like. I almost cried from the flavor. The vegetable lo mein lacked flavor. The noodles were incredibly bland. read more

Forgive me for not uploading any pictures but I've been coming to Chinese America for years! I cannot even remember how long. The egg rolls, beef with Chinese broccoli, special fried rice... the list goes on and on.. some days, there aren't many people in the restaurant but don't let it fool you! This is hidden little gem. DISCLOSURE; this is in the hood! So be careful of the area. Just saying... The ladies working there know me by name (Mr. hungry Joe ) anyways, check it out. It's worth the price! read more

Don't be swindled by their bait and switch tactics. I placed an order online and printed out my order paperwork which included the total for my order, including tax. Upon arrival, I gave them the paperwork I had printed out from my online order. I waited for my credit card to be run for my order. When I received my credit card receipt, I noticed that it was for MORE than the stated amount that I had on my online paperwork. I was told that it was an old menu, and that I had to pay more. I told them that their menu was not my problem and that it's their responsibility to keep it updated. After some arguing, they finally agreed to refund my money. Don't let them cheat you out of your hard earned money! read more

Not for the uninitiated. This is real Chinese Cantonese food. And this place is NO WAY frequented by unadventurous. This is real community food. And great tasting. And it's reminiscent of food I enjoyed in Hong Kong. YUM! I have been here for quite a few banquets with an average of fifty people each time. This eatery is high rated in this first gen crowd. Wait staff speaks little to no English. The group I'm with sings spontaneous traditional Cantonese Chinese opera. Really. No, really. The whole restaurant joins in and sings. It's an over 50 thing. And all the teenagers are embarrassed. La La La Too bad. So, it's dinner and a show! See my pictures. Come w friends. The stuffed eggplant and tofu w shrimp paste is fully and totally delicious! Don't share it!! BTW the strip mall looks like a bombed out section of the Bronx. I give the landlord ONE star. How crazy bad is it?? I feel like I'm in the Bronx. The outside of this restaurant looks no better. If there were bullet holes or even a car on blocks to compliment bars in windows we would be in Beruit. So my Yelp friends, Beware of the parking lot. Don't bring your best car. Got it?? read more

I knew beforehand that this was a hole in the wall but long establishment. But with the promise of an authentic Cantonese dishes, It doesnt matter! We had already eaten a buffet bit wanted to sample a few dishes. Soft tofu balls: delicately spft tofu lightly batter with a delcious sauce. It is a great vegetarian dish yet resembles fish paste salted dry ribs: well executed dish but I am a sauch rib girl Fried calamari: the closest version of our fave family restaurant that is now closed. It's very greasy, It's okay but not again for me, the prices are great but you get what you pay for. Last time I went was probably 20 years ago, so yes it's dirty dumpy outside. I love this place and so does my little girl, we come here about 1 time a week. The workers are older people which I believe they don't know how to update their prices but their food is good AF. Especially the salt and pepper pork ribs and chicken wings ! I always get their egg-rolls too . Honey walnut shrimp is good too, I ask them to put my sauce on the side so I can dip it instead of it being in the sauce. A lot people that are saying they "over charge" it's the 2022 everywhere food is expensive. These people have good Chinese food and it's legit. They also give you a lot of portion. read more

I would go there if I am craving for authentic Cantonese Chinese food in Houston. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants I would go in Houston. Although the interior is really not awesome. It is also located in a kinda creepy place. I was referred by a friend. If my friend never took me there. I would never go there by myself cuz of it. I like most dish there. Salty pork rib, house special tofu r two dishes never go wrong. I had tarot with pork belly, fried pork intestine n mushroom chicken. The chicken one is quite disappointed. The other two were pretty nice as usual. Guess maybe the location, it is usually not busy. But I don't recommend to go at peak time. Bad service n bad food. The best time to go is weekday night and you can consider here is one of your Chinese home kitchen! read more

If you are looking for good authentic chinese on the cheap, then this is the place. This place has been around for at least twenty years and the taste has been pretty consistent. The only reason its not a 4* is that the inside looks pretty run down and not in the best area of town. You are definitely not going for the atmosphere. We ordered 7 dishes, the calamari and soysauce fried chicken were the best. The spare ribs were ok. I would probably skip the crab next time. We were only one of two tables we saw that ate there during Saturday lunch, saw plenty of togo orders though. read more

Chinese American - pea pa tofu, salt&pepper calamari, sauted squash, jindhu spare ribs, soft shell crab, hunan style eggplant in claypot - Chinese Near Me - Houston, Texas

This place is offering dine in and take out during covid! They have been around for over 30 years and still has kept the quality the past 10 years I've been. Their tofu dishes are excellent dishes if you were wanting something different. read more

As far as good home cooking in hole in the wall locations this pretty much describes Chinese American. My family has been going here for generations. It's chock full of Southern Chinese and Cantonese comfort cooking that'll make you feel at home. It's also cheaper than a lot of the other family style places in Chinatown so that's a plus. I love the flat noodles here and the sweet and sour pork. The flat noodles are so good, from the noodles themselves to the flavor. The sweet and sour pork pieces are huge and fried so crispy and crunchy. The sauce isn't the best in my opinion but the meat is good. read more

Good food, reasonable price, generous portion. The only downside is this place is exactly what a typical mom and pop restaurant in china: very old and dirty. Otherwise the food is really good. Great environment, great food and delicious recommendation. At first when I heard Chinese American, I thought to myself that this may be somewhat like a Panda Express or a Royal Chopstix, but wow. You walk in and you know that this place is authentic. How can you tell? Look at all these reviews for this place, they are all from Asian people eating at an Asian restaurant... that's when you know what's up. Honestly I'm not sure what food you should order, but I've been recommended these: crunchy tofu, egg plant, any kind of their steamed vegetables, the crabs, fish, whatever. If you're in a hurry & just looking for something cheap & relatively quick, you may consider stopping here. I won't be going back though. The food was "okay", I've had better "Chinese American" food. We were seated quickly but it took a little while for the waitress to take our order. Not sure if it was only one waitress or what, wasn't paying that much attention. Ordered the egg drop soup and the spoon that was in it was dirty so that immediately turned me off. My friend tasted hers and said she didn't like it, so I didn't bother trying it myself. The sesame chicken was decent but it seemed as if there was an overwhelming hint of SOMETHING. Couldn't quite put my finger on it but I'm thinking it was soy sauce. It was a lot. No complaints on the fried rice, egg roll was decent as well. Price was 4.99/5.50 even with tax. Definitely not bad but, you get what you pay for. read more

Flavor is good. Wish the tofu was crispier. Inside of tofu had a weird crumbly texture.
