The flavors, richness of the meat and textures are all there. The carnitas was so soft and Shredded just how I love it. The rice and beans were well seasoned and delicious. Guacamole has a little kick to it but I enjoyed it. I loved all of my food. The chips are some of the best chips I've had. You can tell they're freshly hand made and fried to perfection. I saw a family eating a big 'ol container of chips and guac at my laundromat, I knew I needed it for inner peace. This place is tucked in the back of a grocery store/deli. There's bright flags strung across the store, with folks hanging out and relaxing. I found it helpful to order pick-up because the person running the register and I were finding it hard to communicate. They were so attentive tho. You know I got the guac and it absolutely hit. Found this gem looking for some good Mexican food in the area and they did not disappoint! The tacos are hearty and filled with flavor! I ordered 8 tacos in total. 2 steaks, 2 chorizos, 2 Al pastor and 2 Cecina. They were all good but my personal favorite out of all of them were Al pastor. The reason I am giving them 3 stars however is that the place is a little disorganized and they seem to get orders mixed up when taking them by phone and walk ins at the same time. But as for the food itself there is no doubt that I would come back and come for some more flavorful tacos! read more

Honestly, might just be the best taco spot yet in this area. I always order the al pastor tacos and an horchata and it hits every single time. The sauce they make to pair is amazing. It close by, amongst the fact that there really isn't many great food options in this area, and its reasonably priced. Staff are quick. There is no restaurant in the United States that I love more. This is truly one of those hole in a wall places, tucked away behind the standard Mexican bodega storefront. Where to start? The price is right, the vibes are tight, and the enchiladas de queso con salsa verde is unspeakably delicious. Their horchata is good, the tacos placenteros are good, but I'm gonna focus on this enchilada, ok? For starters it's enormous. You're served enchiladas with amazing salty cheese, covered in fresh, bright, and spicy as hell green sauce. Their mole sauce is good but honestly the green is the best. You have some sliced onions mixed in, and it always comes w a giant plate of yellow rice and refried beans. I wish I had pictures but I'm always too in the moment at this place to remember to take any. I'll say too that the spice level is not consistent. Sometimes my mouth is on fire and sometimes it's just right. But you know what, that's part of the package. The charm is in the surprise. One time I called ahead and asked the lady about the spiciest level and she said in Spanish "I'm not sure how spicy the chef made it today." Com'n, that's great. Go to Chinantla. read more

This place is very good. I've only had it through delivery and unfortunately, they're not very detailed oriented. Once I ordered a taco placero and got 3 individual tacos with rice, beans and egg. Next time I got 1 huge taco but no egg, instead they sent me a bunch of meat, which I didn't eat. It was still good but they are not consistent. Another time I got a veggie quesadilla, which supposedly it would have blossom squash and mushrooms, but it didn't have any blossom squash. Instead it had green bell peppers. Again, it was still good but I had other expectations. On the bright side, they use less plastic containers than other delivery spots I've had. They use some sort of compostable containers. The food is good and tasty, I just wish they were more precise with their deliveries, hence the 3 starts. I wish I could give 3.5. read more

Best Mexican in the area and tons of food for the price! Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Mexican food but maybe it's because I've never been to a good spot. I usually find it bland and under seasoned with tough meat. I prefer more Latin like Haitian, Puerto Rican and Dominican food. This place though got it perfect. We got the guacamole and chips, breaded chicken torta, chicken mole platter, and Mexican style steak platter. The guac is super fresh, well textured and the chips hold up well. The torta was awesome! A nice kick from some peppers, well seasoned chicken, and yummy bread. This alone I would at least make this a fav sandwich spot. The bistec wasn't tough but could of been a little more tender. Mole is hardly ever wrong so no surprises there. I ordered on grubhub and it just said torta. The counter girl called and wanted to check what meat and overall the whole ordering experience to delivery was pleasant. I am only taking off a star because the mole was alllll over the place when it arrived so perhaps they could find a better container for wetter dishes. Chinantla is the most authentic quick and dirty mexican food I've had since I moved to Brooklyn. Service is Spanish only so be prepared. $2 tacos are gracious in proportion. No gimmicks here, just the real deal. I would recommend their al pastor and carne asada. Free delivery on orders over $13 and they even deliver beer. I placed a late night order for a veggie quesadilla, and something for the hubby. I don't recommend this place if you're extremely lactose intolerant, or do not like authentic Mexican food. For a veggie quesadilla I was expecting at least cheddar cheese, and for the tortilla to be stuffed with vegetables. What I got was a solid brick of cojita cheese, and beans. At first bite was good but as I got further into eating it, I started to taste something funny. I didn't finish it. My husband had a cheesesteak sandwich, which he said was good. The guacamole was good and spicy. The chips were not properly drained of their oil but still crispy. If you're hungover. Chinantla is a little gem within a mostly barren strip of Myrtle ave. It's a strange combo of a Mexican grocery in the front - selling things like Mexican sodas, caned goods, and fresh mexican-ish produce like cactus and tomatillos - and a delightfully informal restaurant in the back. It's equipped with many tables sparsely occupied by tired looking laborers drinking coronas, charming and entertaining photos of old mexico on the walls, and TVs playing futbol and nothing but futbol. It is a mexican establishment for mexicans. But gringos don't fret! The staff is friendly and warm, and the atmosphere, though plain, is thoroughly relaxing. My friends have been talking up Castro's (that's just up the street) as the best Mexican around. But I've been and I felt that it was a little lackluster, and left not feeling completely satisfied with the experience. So I later decided to step into Chinantla in search of something that would finally scratch the itch for authentic mexican-new yorker food, and found that the food itself was better by leaps and bounds. I'm talking yummy. The menu is ginormous, the ingredients are fresh, and everything is made to order. I usually get the sopes for $2.50 that are pressed and cooked fresh from dough when you order and covered with meat (if you like that sort of thing), beans, delicious Mexican cheese, cream(like sour cream but the real liquid non-dolloping kind), lettuce, and tomato. And I recently just tried the vegetarian burrito and decided that it was the best vegetarian burrito that I've ever had. Ever! Though I haven't had that many, because they're usually full of broccoli and crap, and aren't usually good. Their hot sauce and salsa hit the mark like a spicy bullseye, their cheese is the kind you want to eat in fistfuls, rice and beans are killer, plus you never have to wait in line at this place (it's like my secret mexican food place). And did I mention they have quart bottles of Sol and Carta Blanca? Um, yeah, big chubby cold bottles of Sol just to make sure you're totally satisfied. The food is cheaper than Castro's but it's still not cheap as dirt, as I usually prefer. Though the quality of the preparation and ingredients is totally worth it. read more

I'm going to sum up my experience in two parts: 1) The first time I visited this place was right after the July 2012 edition of the Makossa Brooklyn Cookout right up the block @ Brooklyn Tap House. There were about ten of us. It was a little past midnight and we had just finished dancing our asses off and were famished. About half of the group consisted of people originally from Cali that live here now. One of the Chinantla employees threw some tables together for our large group and we all sat. Tacos, nachos and sopas were ordered. Everyone was floored by how good the food was. Especially the Californians. It's a miracle whenever you can get a Californian excited about Mexican food in New York. 2) The VERY NEXT NIGHT, my girlfriend (originally from West Covina, CA) and I were laying in bed. She says "I want Chinantla again." I didn't argue. We hopped on the B48 from Lorimer & Metropolitan (a block from our crib) and took the 15 min ride to Myrtle to satisfy our craving. Plus we made it home in time for Breaking Bad. It's not often where I'll go to a restaurant back-to-back nights. Plus it's rare to find really good Mexican food in Brooklyn so it was worth it. This food is by no means healthy. It's just that perfect late night meal to soak up all the alcohol you drank in the hours prior. And not too expensive. Super on point. The actual decor of the place leaves little to be desired but you can always take your food to go. The little market up front has some choice household items as well. read more

Ok so it's been almost a year and I still frequent Chinantla and the good new is... they're so much better! Seems like not only are they running a tighter ship, the food is tasting better. You've just gotta know what to order. Here are some bulletproof items that are guaranteed to be delicious: - Chilaquiles con huevos (get the red sauce, green is good too tho) - Huaraches (so good with that fresh handmade tortilla, I like it with the chicken) - Tacos (Carne asada, cesina, chorizo, lengua -- all delicious! My friend likes the barbacoa) -Pozole (OMG that pork pozole! So flavorful and they send all the fixings. Note that the hot sauce they'll provide with this is some cayenne pepper. Wish they had a sauce like my mom makes for pozole but alas it will do) Things to know: -The chicken is awesome, possibly better than the steak. Go with it. -The delivery will be accurately delivered 45min-1 hour later. It's not that they purposely get you your food that late, it's that their slammed with deliveries because the food is so good. Also, the closer you live the least wait time you'll have. I live a mile away and that's how long I wait. BUT the food is always hot. -The aguas frescas are super good (my faves: jamaica, melon. the tamarindo is a bit too sweet for my liking but the horchata is perfect) All in all, Chinantla has improved drastically in my eyes. I enjoy that they are on Seamless, the delivery guys are always nice. So tip them well. Those guys work hard and aren't assholes who show up at your door. I'm gonna have to agree with Kyle H. from a review from 2009! The meat is very fatty. I threw out an entire breakfast sandwich (obliviously not a mexican dish) but all I wanted was some strips of bacon and egg on a roll and found a congealed inedible ball of bacon fat on an overcooked egg and sour roll. I really wanted to walk up to the guys over the grills and ask them if they would eat it. Other than that, the tacos are pretty good and very cheap. $2/each. (if you live in the hood, I would suggest calling there first before picking up your order... not sure why it would take more than 5 minutes to make a couple pollo tacos). The staff and cooks always seem like their life is about to end and their attitude is not exactly gringo friendly.... men in the back of this depressing place swig from beers and look like they're about to die. A lot of people here claim Chinantla is better than Castro's - it is - and those people are n00bs. Anyone in the know will tell you that Taqueria Tepango (halfway between Chinantla and Castro's on Myrtle) has been winning the Myrtle Ave Burrito Arms Race for years. First they grew in size, then chips+salsa while waiting for takeout, then melted cheese on top, now they're hot-pressed after folding for a sublime crisp. Indeed, every time I've been to Tepango I've left more satisfied than the last. Their updated Super Taco is incredible. Anyway... I was curious to find out if Chinantla held up, not to Castro's, the Chipotle of Myrtle ave, but to Tepango, the true champ. The ambiance in this place is incredible. The layout is like going through a mexican tunnel of foodie love... and when the ride stops, you stumble, wide-eyed and smiling, into a counter where someone will take your order. Eventually. The chicken cemita I had was very good. As others have said, it was fatty, but then again, it was a mexican sandwich. When it comes down to it, though it's close, I'd take Tepango's cemita. Certainly, more than one meal is required to assess any sort of superiority, but maybe that doesn't really matter - this place is great, and the experience totally unique. I know I won't have any trouble going back. EDIT: Went back, with some friends. Ordered a few different items from the menu - huarache, sope, taco - with various fillings. Actually, what seemed to be a vegetarian option apparently meant vegetables... plus EXTRA meat... so I ended up getting 3 different types of pork. Which I was fine with, because they were all delicious. The carne enchilada was good; the al pastor and the alambre were unquestionably better. The burrito a friend got looked appetizing, though not on par with the masterpiece that is Taq Tepango. read more

FACT: We had friends visiting from Mexico City try, and certify as first-rate, several of Chinantla's tacos. FACT: Their barbacoa tacos are the main reason why i'm taking so long going fully vegetarian. (Closely followed by my weak will). Tried all of their tacos, huaraches and burritos, all consistently and equally good (ok, if you really can't pick: barbacoa, carne asada, chorizo, lengua ). Guac is perfect. Even the vegetarian taco (pinto beans, rice, salad. etc) is pretty decent, considering. Servings / fillings are atypically generous. Delivery always on time. read more

As a Bay Area native, I have to say that this is some of the best Mexican food I've had on the East Coast. I'm usually super picky about Mexican food--Castro's tends to be over-priced and under-seasoned and don't get me started on the food at San Loco--but Chinantla has managed to satisfy my cravings time and again. Note that some of the stuff Chinantla serves can be pretty salty or fatty at times, so you have to experiment a bit to find what you like. I'm a big fan of the Al Pastor burrito there (not to be confused with the salted pork or fried pork)--succulent pork slow simmered in spices and pineapple and then grilled to order. It's so big the tortilla can barely contain the fillings and they have to pile lettuce and tomato on top for lack of room within. Mmmm. I want one right now actually. And for $6, I might just get one. The Mexican breakfasts are awesome tacos cheap and delicious and my roomies say the sopes are unreal. It's probably the only restaurant in this neighborhood I'd make the trek out to if I moved to another area. Go there if, like me, you just don't believe there's good Mexican in NYC. read more

The low lights, blaring telenovela, the little bits of tape over the prices on the menu, the buckets of Corona, the handwritten sign announcing "Vendemos Cheesecake." This place made me feel like I was back in a California barrio like no other I've seen in NYC. And the food was pretty good! The quesadilla de flor de calabaza (squash blossom quesadilla) was indeed salty as a previous reviewer mentioned, but that "breadiness" was actually a deep-fried big corn tortilla. A bit more of a gut-bomb than I anticipated, but tasty! My wife got two tacos - the chicken was pretty average but the carne asada was super tasty. On the show "Westworld," the hosts or robots have certain "loops" that they keep returning to when interacting with guests. Things can change depending on what someone says, but given no outside input things will stay on their loop. The back of this bodega/restaurant hybrid seems like it could be on an endless loop of their own. Everything is just as it should/ought to be - the jukebox playing much too loud norteño, the faux-crimson sponge paint wallpaper, the groups of two or three men occupying about a third of the tables. A sole waitress bounces between behind the counter, in the kitchen and in between tables. She takes my order - an al pastor cemita - and comes back with salsas, plates and silverware a minute later. Five minutes on, the dish has arrived. It's well-stacked, with all of the expected ingredients like smooth cheese, tomato, avocado and plenty of meat. I read in an article somewhere that the cemita can be more forgiving than the taco, since there are some many other toppings. It is a mélange, the flavors comes not only from the meat but also the roll and the vegetables and how they all play together. Here that concert of flavors, perhaps on an endless loop, produced a quite beautiful sound. read more
