Trying to find a good Chinese place . China Town was, ok, not super super but good. Would have given 4 stars but maybe I was expecting something different than what we got. The fried rice was good but different from what we've gotten elsewhere. Same with Won ton soup, it was like beef type broth, not a clear type broth. Egg rolls ok. We Had High Hopes. After seeing people rave about China House on Facebook decided to give it a try. Was Kinda disappointed. Food was ok. The Gen Chicken was chewy, The Kung Pao was undercooked and on the dry side. Make sure and order extra sauce. The only things that was good was the spicy fried rice, and the FREE Crab Rangoons. The regular Fried rice is yellow rice not fried. The wife like the Lo Mein, It was ok. They snuck in a egg roll, it was ok a little dry. Very Friendly People. This was my families favorite chinnese takeout in mchenry for a few years, but recently it just isnt the same. Tonight we bought beef and broccoli and it tasted as if somebody dumped salt in it. (Maybe too much soy sauce was made with it?) The pork fried rice had a big chewy stringy chunk that looked slightly uncooked in it. Just disappointed in the taste and quality. read more

The food here at this mom/pop Chinese place is very good and budget-friendly. They serve probably the best egg rolls in the area: Generous size (about 2x the diameter of what you usually find), good distinct flavor, not greasy, and surprisingly just a buck apiece - what more can you ask for? Almost all their pork dishes are made with roast pork, which most other Chinese restaurants charge extra for. It was my first time ordering here. I wanted to try it even though it had a 3 star rating compared to another nearby Chinese restaurant. When I first pulled up I wasn't impressed with how the place looked. The person who took my order didn't speak very good English but seemed to understand me. Unfortunately I got the wrong item on one of the entrees. However, the food was quite good regardless. I will definitely give them another try. I haven't had luck in finding good Chinese food in Lake county but I believe my quest is over. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

I've driven by Chinatown several times in the past but only just went in here tonight. There was a constant hum from the kitchen as 6+ people prepared take-out orders for the customers coming in and out. The large take-your-own-condiments area was also quite impressive. I ordered Crab Rangoons, Pork Eggrolls, Beef Chow Mein (for the aunt), and General Tso's Chicken. The Crab Rangoons and Eggrolls were good. I was thinking the Chicken was alright- nothing to write home about - UNTIL I ended up with a piece of what seemed like Saran Wrap plastic in my mouth. Uhh...grosss. I did call the restaurant, who apologized and asked if I wanted them to make me a new one (No, thanks..I've pretty much lost my appetite). Shortly after getting off the phone, I tried to force down the rest of the food on my plate...and then bit into something hard: seemingly a piece of bone. Really? My appetite is now TOTALLY gone, and the leftovers are going into the trash. For a $9.50 take-out entree, I'd expect fewer foreign objects in my food. read more

Our first time going here. Decided to pick up a lunch order to go. Ordered by the number instead of stating out loud that I wanted Cashew Chicken. Well, got home and discovered that I had Cashew Pork. Or something like it. Did not taste good at all. Fooey. Really disappointed, plus there were very few cashews in it. Their hong Kong chicken is delicious, very comparable to Plum Garden and much cheaper. Has a better selection of vegetables too, not just bok choy. Egg foo young is hit or miss still, seems different every time. Tempura batter had gotten better. Cashew chicken Garlic chicken Sesame Chicken Mongolian beef Pepper steak with onion Shrimp fried rice Let me first state this was by far the worst Chinese takeout i have ever had! The fried rice was anything but fried rice.I have never had orange fried rice,ever. It was tasteless,and the shrimp was mushy and overcooked. It didnt have the texture,smell,taste of any fried rice I have ever had anywhere,ever! You would think a dish named Cashew chicken would have cashews in it. If you have an allergy to them ,then you might find trace evidence of them. The same could be said for the Garlic chicken. If you have an allergy to garlic you may notice the taste of garlic,as i couldnt tell it was an ingredient at all. Sesame chicken didnt taste like its namesake, especially the small bone that you wouldnt expect to find in this type of dish. That could have been bad,very bad. All vegetables used in every dish we tried were overcooked and limp and mushy,except the carrots. Mongolian beef,Pepper steak with onion, couldnt really tell you what it tastes like as we were so put off by the other items, I promptly bagged it up and took it all back to them. This was the last place we tried in a desperate attempt to find some good local Chinese. It seems it doesn't exist. Both my wife and myself found this place less than average. The rice was overcooked and mush. The orange beef I had was so bland I couldn't tell what it was supposed to be. The breading on the beef was doughy and soft. It was swimming in sauce which probably didn't help. My wife's pepper beef was lacking any sort of flavor whatsoever. We also tried the hot and sour soup which was quite mediocre being neither "hot" nor sour. The crab rangoons were very typical. The portions were quite large. That would have been OK if they were worth eating more than half a serving of. They found themselves on the bottom of our garbage can. A real waste of money. Good Chinese food! I order from here often, They definitely make certain dishes better than others I tend to stay away from their deep fried foods but doesn't mean they aren't good! My personal favorite is the Chicken Lo Mien they make it with plenty of veggies and chicken and you don't get a tub of just noodles for cheap! read more

I have been here 4 times and the food is the best offering in the McHenry area for fastfood chinese. You can't really compare Plum Garden with this restaurant since this is fastfood not a seatdown restaurant with ambiance. My go to menu item is always kung pao chicken and it is a good measuring item for any chinese restaurant IMHO. The food is good and fresh. Have only been there twice (thinking maybe he was just filling in for the day) went back the second time and it was just aweful. They lost a customer of 10 years. We couldn't decide between Won Ton or Egg Drop soup so we decided to get the best of both worlds in Won Ton Egg Drop Soup. It was disgusting. I don't know if they just threw a bunch of egg whites in to make the broth but it was thick, goopy, and tasteless. I ordered Beef Lo Mein because I was in the mood for noodles but there weren't a ton of noodle options. This was OK but plain. Nothing exciting and not something I would order again. My boyfriend got Sesame Beef which was really delicious if all you're looking for is flavorful Chinese take-out food. The portion was HUGE too. We also had to try the Pork Egg Rolls and they were amazing too. It's so hard to decide how to rate it but the disturbing soup is what left an impression on me. read more

The large lunch menu offers generous portions at incredible prices. I had the Hot Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. It could have used a few more shrimp, but I really can't complain because of the very fair price. Plus it came with a HEAP of pork fried rice that more than made up for the low shrimp count. The massive amount of vegetables made me feel like I met my vitamin quota for the day. It was all delicious. Ambience is simple, like a fast food place; perfect for families. I thought I would give this restaurant another chance since switching owners/management (the first experience with the switch wasn't so good). Needless to say, this wasn't good either. The crab rangoon used be one of the best. This time there was very little filling and A LOT of wonton shell. Very disappointing. The chicken dish I had was full of grease and the chicken tasted like it was battered and fried before being added to the dish---YUK! This restaurant has officially lost my business. :( read more
