We ordered General Tsos chicken and House Special Lo Mein. The chicken was ok, good flavor and cooked ok. I asked for it a little extra spicy but it could have been spicier than what they made it. The Lo Mein was fair at best. Noodles were cooked well but overall the dish was very dry to eat. I order from New China on a regular basis for lunch while at work which is around the corner. I have to says their food is consistently good, very fast service and they have a lot of great options on the menu. It is fast food carry out chinese food at a good value. For my vegetarian friends - two of my favorites are: Tofu with Mixed Vegetables or Vegetable Moo Shu are my favorite two dishes Shrimp with Vegetables are my goto. I think the rating are not correct on China House. I know a lot of my teammates from where I work from love it here as well. Some of the food was good and some not so good. What happened to this place? Food scores: Egg Roll gets a 1 Looks like one, no flavor, no internal structure. Crab Rangoon gets a 2 At least it hade the flavor, just not much filling. Steamed Dumplings gets a 3. Not sure what the paste looking substance was but it tasted like it should. General TSO, Lo Mein, and Sweet and sour Chicken scored much better they get a 4.5. I'm not going to tell you to stay away. Just be cautious as to what you order. read more

Ordered the Mongolian Beef & Beef w/Snow Peas lunch special. Right out of the gate, they messed up my order; they gave me Shrimp w/Snow Peas instead. Mongolian Beef is not as hot as a lot of the Chinese restaurants I've eaten at, but the portions of beef were very small. (mostly vegetables & rice) Vegetables were fresh, but I was disappointed with their pork egg rolls. The dough tasted old. On Sunday, July 28, 2019 I was visiting a friend in McHenry, and the 3 of us ordered food from the China House. From the person who took our order over the phone to the food itself, it was one awful experience. It all began with the woman who answered the phone and took my order. She was short-tempered, rude and became annoyed when I asked questions about the ingredients of various dishes. When I asked if she could please make sure that hot mustard and sweet and sour packets were placed in the bag, she actually YELLED at me saying "I don't need to tell her how to do her job because they always give those packets". I was flabbergasted by her rudeness and shortness of answering my ingredient and packet questions. When the food came, it was sub-par and I'm being kind. The egg rolls were doughy and hardly had any filling, the King Pao Chicken was bland and the egg foo young was cold. I would rate this restaurant a zero if that were an option. I went in to order food, wait, and bring it home. I told them my order, paid, and got home with one order completely missing. I called to tell them, and the man who answered the phone told me that I was wrong, that I did not order the other meal. I told him that I did in fact order the meal and would like it delivered to me. He hung up on me, I called back and asked for a manager and he said no and hung up again. called back again, asked for an owner, he hung up on me. We did this 5 times, and he told me no each time and hung up. This is the WORST customer service I have ever received!!! What he should have done was correct HIS MISTAKE, and made the customer happy. I ordered from China House tonight and was blown away at how delicious everything was. Portions were substantial and made perfectly. Everything I ordered was perfect, and my family is still thanking me for ordering such a good meal. We picked up our order, and we enjoyed sitting and looking thru the door as several people were making our order and packing it up. Did I mention how delicious everything was? We thanked the cooks as we were handed our bags, and they came closer and said enjoy your meal. I can only hope someone tells them we did! Will have to call tomorrow! read more

Ordered from China house today. Got home late from work and really didn't feel like cooking. I was actually surprised by the quality of the food. I got General Tso chicken combo came with pork fried rice (I got chicken fried rice) and egg roll. Great portion I was stuffed after I finished. Didn't even you h my egg roll. Ordered some pot stickers steamed and they were GReAt. My wife ordered the Kung po combo and also got chicken fried rice at no extra Charge. She didn't even put a dent in it. We had it delivered and was told it would take 45 min to a hour. Needless to say it only took 30 minutes and was nice and hot. I will order again from china house. I got their menu in my mailbox & tried to order online for delivery; online it said that they don't deliver to my area. So, I called and yes, they do deliver to Wonder Lake... since I ordered over the phone I got no coupon. I ordered the Pu Pu Platter to try their apps as this was my first time eating their food; it was to contain their Chicken on a stick, Fried Shrimp, Chicken Wings, BBQ Pork, 2 Spring rolls & Sweet & Sour Chicken. The Spring rolls were OK, although the only thing in them was the cabbage. The BBQ pork was tasteless! All of the Chicken was very, very greasy and had no taste; even with Sweet & Sour Sauce that came in little packets, it was all tasteless except for the grease. I also ordered the Steamed Dumplings which came with it's own sauce; the dumpling had a decent amount of filling with way too much batter. Steamed dumplings should have a batter that is thin, and had it been thinner, they would have been good. At best these are ok. I haven't yet tried the Egg Foo Young I ordered, as I am full of the tasteless food and lots of grease (and I mean I washed my hands 3 times to get the grease off). I can report that the gravy for the Egg Foo Young is separate from the Patties and it's very light in color... lighter than I have even seen before and without much flavor ( I tasted the gravy as I didn't know what it was when I unpacked everything). The order came in a little less than an hour which was what they told me, although I did get a call from the restaurant asking where I was since their driver couldn't find my house... when she repeated my address, sure enough she had written it down wrong! I am sorry to give them even 1 star, and the only reason for the 1 star is that Yelp doesn't allow for no stars when we write reviews. No, no, no. I went here a week or so ago and tried an old favorite of mine, barbecue pork almond ding. Ok, it's not a popular menu item at any Chinese restaurant, I'll admit. The vegetables were fresh (an awful lot of diced celery, though), but the pork tasted very old. This place is takeout- and delivery-only, and prices are reasonable. But sticking with ingredients and dishes with higher turnover may be the safer way to go here. read more

I ordered $90.00 for 4 main dishes, and several sides of egg roll and steamed dumplings, fried rice. Main dishes were beef chop suey (2 qts) asked for no broccoli, so they doubled up on the carrots. Wasn't great. I ordered a qt of Kung Pao Shrimp, which I normally love, but it was almost all partially cooked celery. I had to search for the shrimp. Also wasn't great. Last main dish was a qt of Beef Chop suey on Lo Mein. The lo mein was good, the beef chop suey was neutral, not great as it always has been. I talked to the owner and he laughed at me when he asked "What do you want?" 4 times, and I answered him but he obviously wasn't listening as he continued to take orders and half listened to me. We normally can't finish our dinners with all the sides, and will eat them as lunch/left overs, no one wanted them. They didn't go to the fridge for that reason. It just wasn't good meals last night. But to be told by the owner we can't refund all the main dishes, maybe just the Kung Pao, was beyond belief. She claims it is all made the same all the time, there is no reason our food would be different from one day to another. She felt maybe we were mixing her store with another, and I advised her we had only ordered from her store, not another. Taste was not great, or not up to par. We have ordered here before and left great reviews. We will not order here again. Not with their poor attitude and disrespect for a customer who is not happy with their food. Very disappointed with the customer service over the phone none the less. Simply just asked if they had Cantonese style noodles a couple times because we didn't get a straight answer and she went into a rant, raised her voice and continued to explain that chow mein didn't have noodles only low mein. Which i told her I understood the difference. After I couldn't understand her clearly I said "let me pass you to my husband". She let out a HUGE sigh and whispered, "my God..." followed by something in a foreign language. This was the owner or one of them. She said "MY RESTAURANT DOESNT HAVE PAN FRIED NOODLES, ONLY LOW MEIN! CHOW MEIN HAS NO NOODLES!!!!" We won't be getting food here ever again, disappointing. We love chinese food. If you like sugary sweet, candy-like broccoli that tastes more like it's drenched in sweet and sour sauce and not garlic sauce, you'll like this "cough" restaurant. Juan's review totally cracked me up (from 2012), so we thought we'd order the General Tso's chicken combo and Kung Pao chicken combo, to see what's changed in the last 2.5 years. I called for delivery and as Juan said, "needless to say" it got here in 21 minutes instead of the 45 minutes they estimated :) The portions are very generous, the food is decent typical Chinese fast food (nothing too fancy) and it was super hot (temperature). The egg roles come with the combo and they're the size small burritos. We also ordered fried pot stickers and they are huge, too! There's like a golf ball sized ball of meat in each one. They also threw in 5 fortune cookies and a bunch of sauces, etc. So, overall, it's not the fanciest finest Chinese food I've ever had (and yes, I've been to China), but for $22, there was enough tasty food to feed 4 people and it was delivered faster than any other food delivery in town. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I have ordered from here before and the food is average Chinese fast food. Not bad, but not great. I ordered 2 entries tonight through the BeyondMenu app for delivery ASAP. When they hadn't delivered in 55 minutes I called the restaurant. The person that answered said my food just left the restaurant and that the driver should arrive in 10-15 minutes. When it took 30 more minutes to be delivered I asked the delivery driver when he left the restaurant. He said 10 minutes before, as soon as the food was ready. Therefore my food had not even been made yet when the person on the phone had told me it was with the delivery driver. I called the restaurant back and the same person answered and immediately put the phone on the counter while serving other customers. After calling back two more times he finally spoke to me. He immediately started arguing with me about the order time, but I had the email confirmation to prove it. When I told him that he lied to me about the order being on the way and that I wanted a refund he hung up on me. I will never use this restaurant again and neither should anyone else! read more

We have yet to visit the actual restaurant as we always order delivery (which is always fast and the food is hot) but I am very pleased with this restaurant. We love the beef lo mien as well as their twice cooked beef, the fried wontons are awesome and the wonton soup (which a large container is only like $2). Just a warning. DO NOT order the Boneless BBQ spareribs! Tastes like old pork, very strange tasting & smelling. Tons of gristle and chewy-rubbery pieces. I wonder if it was over-microwaved, as it has that taste microwaves give meat. Rest of it is so-so. I agree with one reviewer that the broccoli in garlic sauce is super syrupy sweet, too. I was too lazy to cook & clean dishes, tonight, so I just steamed some big shrimp, threw them into the broccoli garlic, added fresh basil & hot pepper flakes. Made it so much better! They deliver so fast - about 15-20 minutes when they tell you 45 to an hour. Makes me wonder if they do just throw it in a microwave to reheat? Does the delivery guy have a house near this area where he's quickly reheating some of these pre-made dishes there and then able to deliver so quick to an area that's about 10 minutes away from their restaurant? Can't figure out how all this food is ready in 10 minutes or less, then delivered 10 minutes away. Hmmm. Something to ponder. There's really only about 3 Chinese restaurants in McHenry/Wauconda/Island Lake area (none of them are anything great) and this is the only place that delivers, unless you can do Grub Hub or Uber Eats. Guess this is what I get for being too lazy to cook dinner, having a broken cell phone and not having the car to go pick up somewhere else. Way too much peas and carrots as filler, order without unless you really like them. The seafood Lo Mein was mediocre, almost all noodles (spaghetti like noodle) with a few tiny shrimp and tiny scallops, and some pieces of imitation crab. Had this for the first time tonight. Worst Chinese food, possibly ever. Sesame chicken was overcooked, dry, and flavorless. Also, each piece of chicken was stuck together in a big clump. Fried potstickers were full of water inside and the meat was also dry and flavorless. Eggrolls were soggy and bland. The worst of all was my Boneless spare ribs and fried rice. Called the store and the manager told me that item is not on the menu. I pointed out that her employee told me it was when I ordered it. He even confirmed it with me on the phone. I also let her know that one dish we ordered was completely wrong, and we were missing sides, and sauces. The manager then told me that she would not issue a refund and that none of this was her, or the restaurants problem. I will never order from this place again. First time ordering from "China House" after reviewing menu online, we ordered a few appetizers and a main course. One of which was the "Beef Teriyaki" which came in a large plastic round container. It contained four 1/2" thick, 1 1/2" wide by 4-5" pieces of beef, which were placed on wooden skewers. The first thing we noticed that the sauce that came with it was red, which I'd never seen red teriyaki sauce, but upon trying it, we found it so incredibly tough we could barely cut it with a steak knife, let alone chewing it. Needless to say, we were not impressed with the food, although the dog did enjoy the beef teriyaki (after I spent 20mins trying to cut it into bite size pieces). The rest of the food (chicken and pea pods) had a peculiar after taste. But I will say, the food was prepared very quickly and ready to go when I arrived to pick it up. PS - Their photo of the restaurant when looking it up through Bing, is terrible. Way to dark and looks like it was being taken by someone getting ready to do a drive-by shooting. read more
