Totally surprised at how good this was. Let's be honest, it looks like a dump from the outside (hell, the inside won't win any awards either), but in this case, looks are incredibly deceiving. I had lunch here today, and decided to go in a different direction from the 33 standard lunch specials - all the usual chow meins and Po's and Lo's and Tso's. They had a special board that featured a glorious sounding dish named Jalapeno Pepper Chicken with fried rice and a choice of soup/egg roll/soda for the bargain basement price of $4.75. It was terrific- fresh and flavorful and not a speck of grease on the plate. A real nice dish for a cheap price served by a real nice group of people. Yay, I'm a fan indeed. read more

Quick and easy Chinese food. A staple when you don't want to cook. Fair prices and adecent product.

Chicken fingers were tough to chew. Rice was unspectacular. Teriyaki beef was just average.

Now I'll say I like Chinese but this spot does need some improvement to get more stars I'll say this right now. I ordered beef lo-mein, beef teriyaki, pork fried rice, Szechuan chicken & shrimp which was supposed to be hot & spicy but not to my standards so it lost points. also the place to me it seems it more does take-out orders more than people coming in. I did get some white rice but the leftovers I took home & will enjoy later & even the beef teriyaki to me wasn't there with the taste & a bit tough than need-be so this one does need help & if I would get a pro to assist call Robert Irvine. read more

Previous yelp reviews led me to this restaurant and I would say in the main they were correct. The Jalapeno Chicken was very good the only disappointment was the fried rice which was very lack luster; however, I can overlook that as the Hot and Sour Soup was a total surprise well above the average. Minutes away from Six Flags. When you first notice this place it looks kinda small and deserted but don't let the appearance fool you. This place seems really popular with take out. Their phone wouldn't stop ringing. The menu is cheap & the food is delicious! Don't waste your money eating dinner at Six Flags. They have great specials including Happy Meal - $4 Pork Fried Rice with 4 chicken fingers and 2 chicken terriyaki. Or the Special Meal - $3.80 Pork Fried Rice with boneless spare ribs and 3 Chicken fingers. No, I'm not lying about these prices and yes they serve you plenty. I had ordered the Happy Meal and had food left over. And everyone knows Chinese food is even better the next day. They also have all the popular combination plates and all kinds of meats and seafood. My friend ordered a small order of crab rangoons... I've gotta say.. they were off the hook. I wish I lived closer... I chose this place based on everybody's reviews. Unfortunately, I didn't have the best experience with the food. I ordered shrimp fried rice, it was rice with chunks of onions and unflavored shrimp. The rice was hard as if it was old and quickly reheated. I also ordered crab Rangoon, and I was severely disappointed. One bite and e filling tasted sour. With all the takeout Chinese places in the area this one is the best. I've been eating here for 15 years and have never been disappointed am a fan of the spicy tofu lo-mein and hot and sour soup. The tofu lo-mein is not on the menu, however, they will make that and just about any other dish with a tofu substitute. I am a carnivore at heart but the way they fry the tofu makes it fantastic. I too am picky about my hot and sour soup. China Star's Hot and Sour is a very close second to Amherst Chinese. Food always tastes fresh. Great portions, excellent price. I've been ordering here for six months same thing every time. They know my name when I call. The last two time ordering shrimp and broccoli as I always do, I got chicken and broccoli and ate it accepting as a mistake. Second time I got chicken instead of shrimp I called. The woman who answered laughed at the mistake not offering to fix it. I will never order from here again. read more

Best Chinese food We ever had! I cannot express how amazing their food is. Found it to be the closest Chinese restaurant near 6 flags new england (3 miles). It was a small take out place with a few tables. Our whole family of 8 stopped their for dinner and ordered many tasty dishes. They brought out to us when the food was ready. We ordered 2 different rice, chicken teryoki, mixed veggie, a low mein, veggie mooshoo, and broccoli general sou. We have not eaten Chinese food that good in so long, don't remember when. We all feel the same. My only regrets is we live over 1.5 hours from there, can only go after visiting 6 flags with our season pass, and that after eating their Chinese food; the Chinese restaurants near where we live will never taste so good again! #bestchinesefoodever read more

Since moving to Springfield I have struggled to find a good Chinese food spot that would satisfy my cravings on rainy days. I decided to break out of town and order food elsewhere. I ordered a serving of friend dumplings and a general Tso's lunch special with an egg roll. I thought my meal was very good- not greasy at all and flavorful! As others have mentioned, the place doesn't look all that.... inviting... from the outside, but they're very nice folks and make some solid american-chinese food! They also don't cook the veggies to death, which is nice, and they use fresh ingredients. Lately I've been trying new places for Chinese food. Most have been okay. This was the worst. Crab rangoons are my favorite but these are really doughy. Spare ribs are dry, chicken fingers tiny and mostly dough. Worst pork fried rice I've ever had! Salty and lacking pork. Not to mention it smelt odd. I wasn't expecting a 5 star experience but from the reviews it didn't seem that that bad. I'm pretty easy to please but this place really let me down. read more

Yes, I really did just give our favorite spot for "cheap Chinese" five stars. I'm not saying that it's a five-star restaurant, but it is absolutely at the top of its game for what it is: Cheap Chinese. I'm (mostly) not snobby about my food...I can be equally happy at a roadside shack or a diner or a world-class fine dining establishment...I simply adjust my expectations accordingly and look for the place to do whatever it does really well. China Star does that, and when we're in the mood for takeout, we will drive out of our way to hit it. Portions are ENORMOUS, and everything we've had has been super tasty. Our usual suspects are egg rolls (big, fresh & crunchy; very last bite is often too greasy, but I can deal because the rest of it is excellent); pan-fried meat dumplings (I'd actually put these up against higher-end Chinese restaurants without hesitation, and the sauce is as good as if not better than most), and kung pao chicken ordered extra spicy (not enough kick if you don't specify; consistently good). We're big eaters and we share the order of kung pao and have ALWAYS had plenty left over for lunch the next day. That's our regular order, and I think it comes to somewhere in the $15 range. Oh, and if you're a fan of hot mustard, make sure you ask for a small container of it instead of grabbing the packets, because they make their own and it's great. We've tried other things at various times: beef & bean sprouts *good but slightly bland unless you specify spicy, pepper steak (very good, but again specify heat), hot & sour soup (average/decent -- for some reason, this is one thing I'm fairly particular about), spare ribs (average/decent; not overly fatty), wings, crab rangoons, lo mein, etc. All perfectly acceptable. I think they're light-handed with their spice/heat levels across the board, but I'd rather that than poor or funky flavors, which we've had none of at this place. read more

As others have said, this place is excellent for a late night meal after a day at Six Flags! We ordered all of their dinner specials and even though our expectations were high, this place didn't disapoint. Their egg rolls and wonton soup were spot on, but the big hits for us were the chicken with string beans and jalapeño chicken. The spicy tofu lo mein was the best we've ever had! I was craving Chinese food so badly the other day but I'm not from the area and my boyfriend doesn't often eat Chinese so we turned to Yelp for suggestions. This ended up being our final pick. While it's not really anything special architecturally speaking or with regard to the decor, it's not too bad overall. We ordered the lemon chicken (with pork fried rice instead of white rice), a kung pao chicken combo, and a general tso's chicken combo. The lemon chicken looked great when I opened the box but it was pretty underwhelming. While I like fried/breaded chicken, I also like my chinese chicken to have that nice thick sauce on it and this one had a very liquid, very lemony sauce served on the side with multiple slices of lemon in it. It was really nothing but a weak, watered down, very sour sauce. The two combo plates were large enough to be satisfying for one person. One of them was great, nothing particularly special, but as good as almost any other typical Chinese food you might find. I didn't try the other, I believe it was the kung pao chicken, but it didn't look all that appetizing to me-- it just wasn't quite what I was expecting, that's all. The fried rice was good; I added some sweet and sour sauce from home to it though because it needed some extra oomph. My only real complaint about the rice was the huge chunks of onion-- I'm okay with onion but not when it's just giant chunks thrown in there. Overall this place was actually okay but I think it depends on what you choose to order-- and I personally would not recommend the lemon chicken. The staff seemed great, there was a guy at the counter who was friendly and kind and the woman also taking orders was very helpful; she even came out to take the order of a woman in a wheelchair. read more

This place is downright awful. Long time ago we came here, and wasn't pleased, and they recently changed owners so we decided to try it out. Huge mistake. First off, we ordered the "10" piece dumplings, and there was 8, but they were fairly decent. We ordered a dinner combination, and the egg roll was soggy, and the sesame chicken was way too heavily breaded. The fried rice was barely edible, and the sauces, besides the sauce for the dumplings, we're horrible. The sweet and sour sauce didn't look appetizing at all, and the duck sauce just looked like puke. If you're looking for good Chinese food, just stop by Southwick and go to New Main Moon. read more

I used to go to China Star at least once a week. Lately, I see different faces in the kitchen and counter and in my opinion things are not what they used to be. The fried rice is very salty, and it's just not the same. The food seems more greasy now I used to get hot mustard for free , but now they charge me for it and I only get hardly a tablespoon full.
