China Orchid
Shannon S.

I've eaten here for many years and it's one of the better Chinese options Uptown. Before Katrina I ate here very often but I rarely end up eating here anymore as there are so many new Vietnamese places that have opened nearer my house that I end up at those more often. They have a decent selection of Asian items beyond just the expected Americanized Chinese offerings. I used to enjoy the Singapore Noodles here but my last several times of ordering that dish it just hasn't been as good as it used to be. Overall the prices are decent for the quantity you get and the service is generally adequate. My video review of China Orchid Restaurant is here: https://youtu.be/GG_FDwlX8wY

The food was delicious! The new owners really took it up a level. The inside decor is more inviting, the Shanghai Pop music playing was fun and all the customers were loving it. Will definitely be back!

I really enjoyed my lunch at China Orchid yesterday. They serve solid, traditional Chinese food at very reasonable prices. I had a cup of egg drop soup and their broccoli chicken with a side of brown rice and an egg roll. I was happy with both dishes. The flavors were great and the ingredients seemed to be of very good quality. The service was excellent too.

Im giving 1 star because they did not honor the advertisement and coupons they put out. Gave me a 10% discount on a meal that was advertised as "free". 1st and last time going.

OUTSTANDING CRAB RANGOON - like good fries it's crispy on the outside but creamy inside; And Huge: 6" across with lots of filling.

CRAB RANGOON: for this dish alone they deserve 4 stars. I have never seen wedges this big: 6" long, and stuffed to the edges with filling (SEE PIC). And just like good french fries they are crispy on the outside but gooey creamy on the inside. 6 wedges, easily a single meal - $9.

Pineapple fried rice!

I tried the pineapple fried rice! It was nicely done, and the service was top-notch as always!

Cool potstickers fried in a circle so you get this cool pattern

We actually chose it over another, more upscale-looking restaurant nearby because of those ratings. We always like supporting highly rated local spots, so we went in hoping for a great experience. The restaurant is small and fairly simple inside. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who also served as our waiter, and service throughout the meal was polite. The restaurant wasn't very busy at the time. My husband and I eat sushi often--both locally and when we travel--so we tend to order a few "baseline" items that make it easier to gauge quality. We started with gyoza and steamed shumai. The shumai had a strong shrimp flavor but was somewhat soggy in texture. The gyoza was pan-seared but fairly average. Both appetizers gave us the impression they might be pre-made rather than freshly prepared. Next we ordered the snow crab naruto, along with a rainbow naruto that looked great on the restaurant's display screen. Unfortunately, both rolls were assembled so loosely that they fell apart almost immediately when we tried to pick them up. It seemed the cucumber wrapping was sliced too thin to hold the ingredients together. The rainbow naruto especially fell apart as soon as it was touched, and it also had no sauce or finishing element, which made it feel incomplete. For our main rolls we ordered the Rock and Roll and the Po Boy roll. The Rock and Roll was average, and my husband described the Po Boy roll as just okay. We finished the meal with fried banana for dessert, which ended up being the best item we ordered. After dinner we drove back to Baton Rouge (we had been in the area to drop someone off at the airport). On the drive home both of us experienced stomach discomfort, and by the time we got home we both had upset stomachs. I'm still not feeling great the next day, which is unusual for me since I rarely experience stomach issues after eating out. I wouldn't say it was food poisoning, but the after-effects were noticeable. Given the very high ratings online, perhaps we just visited on an off night. However, based on our experience, I can only give it two stars and it's not somewhere we would likely return.

As you come in you seat yourself. It's a good ambiance and no frills experience. The service here…read moreis great, our waiter was quick to get our order out and food came fairly quickly. The food was great! We got a couple special rolls and a couple normal rolls. The prices are standard for sushi which is great. Next time we go here we really want to try the bento box dinner. It smelled so good as the waiter walked it over to another table. I highly recommend this for lowkey dates and casual get togethers with friends.

The stand outs to me were the Pani Puri with the fiery mint water that you pour and lets you control the heat (you eat it in one bite), the Pork Dan Dan Buco Di Creste noodles (we asked not too spicy, we're getting older! This is my favorite restaurant! The owner/executive chef, Chef Hao is a genius. We get the "Feed…read moreMe" option where 4-5 dishes are brought out that are chosen and prepared personally by Chef Hao. His dishes are to die for. Combinations you would never think would work together just fuse and melt in your mouth. He pairs things like raw salmon and strawberries with a sauce that mind blowing. All this combined in your mouth is like heaven on Earth! His Mama's Dumpling soup is so good especially on a cold or rainy night. I have tried almost his whole menu and can't complain about a thing. My only complaint is I wish they were open for lunch. If I worked there, my whole check would go to my bill and I'd still probably owe him money! The staff is really good. They are great for offering recommendations from food to cocktails to bourbons (that he collects). And if they aren't sure, they will ask Chef Hao for his advise. They fully explain everything that comes out and is put on the table, even the rice they explain is to sop up any extra sauce. Every day he is open, he is out picking the freshest fish, veggies, and fruits so dishes taste fresh and can be changed up if one thing isn't available but something else is. The place itself is small but very cozy. I would definitely recommend reservations through Open Table. We went one night during all the very cold weather. I was worried I'd be cold since it's in a remodeled NOLA shotgun house (and those building at known for being drafty), but Chef had the place insulated very well. My husband and I go there for our wedding anniversary, birthdays, or just to go when the craving hits. It's a great place to bring a date.

Romantic ambiance with a beautiful presentation of our entree. Definitely a great date night spot!read more

The restaurant sets off cute date or special event night vibes with its trendy, inviting atmosphere. I love how the bar and main dining area are separated- you can either dine at the tables or go next door to hang out for drinks. We stopped by for a late lunch and were greeted warmly by our sweet waitress Mikayla. She was very helpful and patient with any questions we had with items on the menu. Service was stellar A+++ !!! Now onto the incredible FOOD: Bo Ne - filet mignon steak cubes & eggs (10/10): When an entree comes out sizzling & the aroma wakes you up- you know it has to be AMAZINGLY FLAVORFUL & FANTASTIC! Spread the butter & pate on the toasted bread, then use it to soak up all the INCREDIBLE flavor explosion from the sizzling steak & eggs!!! *VOILA chef's kiss* (side note: I grew up in Houston & had Bo Ne fairly regularly & I honestly think Ba Chi elevates this dish to another realm!!!) Curry clams & fries (10/10): I was worried I wouldn't like it because I wanted mussels, which were unavailable. To my surprise, this dish was another great hit !!! The yellow curry flavors were unique - a bit of heat & spice but not overwhelming. Next time, I would ask for the fries to be served on the side so that they stay crispy! We really wanted to slurp down a gallon of the curry- it really was THAT good! Pro tip: get a side of vermicelli noodles (or rice), mix it with the leftover curry & proceed to gobble it all up if you have room left in your tummy! Spicy lemongrass chicken wings (8/10): These were good-sized wings that packed a little punch with the spice! We enjoyed the spicy lemongrass flavor of the crispy wings (be aware that not everyone has a palate for lemongrass- they have other flavors available for those less adventurous eaters). DRINK: Dragon Slay-Her: what a gorgeous & beautiful drink - the dragon fruit margarita was a specialty cocktail I've never had before and I LOVED IT !!! (10/10) Their espresso martini with ube foam is another popular cocktail & I look forward to trying it on my next visit! TL; DR: If you're wanting to FIRE UP and add some PIZAZZ & all that jazz to your fabulous foodie life, then make lunch/dinner/drink plans for Ba Chi! You'll have the best dining experience there with quality food and top notch service! We LOVEDDD & enjoyed our dining experience today!

I've drank a lot of Vietnamese coffee (cafe su da) and the one I got from here has the perfect combination of amount of drink, ice, coffee, and sweetness.
