I have been a big fan of Chef Jan since his days in Ann Arbor and have closely followed his career. Mt Pleasant is so lucky to have such an accomplished, award-winning, tough but fair, chef in our community. I often treat myself to lunch here and always get the Mongolian Beef Lunch Special. This is an elusive Chef Jan specialty that he has been protecting for decades. We are truly blessed to have access to this delicacy in our backyard. One of the worst meals I've ever had. Hot and sour soup that was neither hot nor sour. Shrimp dumplings that were filled with cold, uncooked pork--waiter took them back and brought back overcooked shrimp dumplings with a dipping sauce that smelled like dirty laundry. Then ma po tofu that was greasy and bland, with fried rice that was clumpy and bland. Just awful. read more

Tipped nothing and got insulted as I was walking out with my family because the waiter didn't want to listen multiple times to anyone at our table. I don't tip when the service is subpar. And the fact he looked at the tip before we even left is despicable honestly. I don't know what's so hard to understand about "no ice" even when explained in numerous ways. And I ordered the dinner special but was served the lunch special instead. (I wasn't charged for the dinner special but it's the fact he didn't listen) we left sooner than we usually do and probably won't be back for awhile. read more

Ordinarily, we are pretty pleased with the quality of the food, but we had take-out recently and the moo shu pork was so incredibly salty we couldn't eat it. Other items we ordered were fine. I don't get it. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have known this was over salted. All they would have to do is taste it before serving. read more

A new sit-down Chinese restaurant! It's been a week since their opening, and we think they are doing well. By 6 pm there was a 20 min wait - on a Thursday. Fast and efficient servers. Almost too fast, we just got our appetizer, and out came the dinners! BTW, the crab Rangoon actually had crab in it. Nice. And tho the menu said 4 pcs, our plate had 6. The entrees were served hot, and they were generous portions. My Shrimp with Vegetables had 10 huge shrimp in it!!! Nice ambiance. We hope this place is a success! read more

The best Chinese food in the area & it's not even close. They have the best crab Rangoons my husband and I have ever tried-I seriously could eat the entire plate of 6 of them by myself. The wonton soup is really good, I originally ordered the hot & sour soup & did not like it, but our waiter nicely offered a different soup for me to try at no additional cost, which I appreciated & thought was very nice! My husband loved the orange chicken & general tso chicken which he asked for extra spicy. I got the sweet & sour chicken with fried rice & it was wonderful. The scallion pancake was very oily. Like it was put in a cold pan and just sucked up the oil. The egg drop soup was sweet and tasted off. We got two dumplings 1st pork 2nd was pork with crab. The pork with crab was worth ordering again a little real crab on top gave it a nice flavor. Did not care for the pork only dumping and the inside of the crab and pork was the same tasting pork. But the real crab made it work. Some were juicy as described in the menu, but not all 6 of them. Felt like it was a high cost for only getting 1 out of 4 items we liked. Service was ok, a bit slow but a company was having a Christmas party, so it was understandable. Never got a water refill, they were just to busy. read more

This review is based on the one dish I got which was the eggplant. Phenomenal! This dish was definitely elevated Chinese Food. Eggplant can be tough to master and find in a restaurant made really well and this was exceptional IMHO. I would come again and again just for this dish but am looking forward to trying more items from the menu! The chef is an award winning chef and based on my happy taste buds today I would say I can see why. I was a bit skeptical this was going to just be overpriced chinese food but the food tasted like fine dining. My only complaint is the $1 fee many of the chinese restaurants in Mount Pleasant are implementing for using credit cards. Otherwise really quick/attentive service! Also the portion was substantial. This was my first time at this restaurant. There was some talk about when this place would open. The rumor was that they had hired a very talented chef. I went in during lunch. I decided to go with the egg drop soup and cashew chicken because it is something that I can get at most Chinese restaurants and I would be able to make a comparison. The food ranked better than most that we have available in Mount Pleasant. Overall I was satisfied with the meal. I will definitely be going back to try some of the Chef's specials. read more

We came here for an early dinner and was highly satisfied with our meals. We got chicken egg rolls for an appetizer that was deep fried and had a lot of flavor. We ordered egg fried rice, sweet & sour shrimp, and dragon and phoenix chicken and shrimp dinner. Definitely got a large portion of food and we all had to get to go boxes. I've never tasted Chinese food like what was served to us here. At our table we had egg foo yung and shrimp with noodles. We ordered the "everything" appetizer that had 1 egg roll, 2 fried 'pork' wontons, 2 Rangoon, 1 egg roll and 1 pork rib. The shrimp plate came out first. Then about 30 minutes later the EFY and the appetizer plate came out. Appetizers were good. There was very little flavor in the shrimp plate, nothing I've ever tasted in a Chinese establishment. The noodles had been boiled in beef broth, that's what they looked like, but no Asian flavoring at all, no vegetables except some green onions. I had asked if there would be vegetables on the plate and the man who took our order said there would be. Shrimp was steamed and not seasoned at all. The whole plate was dry. I hailed down a server and asked for some brown sauce. (There was no soy sauce on the table, just salt and pepper.). I was given some brown gravy and some other brown sauce in little cups. I mixed them together and it made the noodles edible. The EFY gravy was just brown gravy, not at all the Chinese flavors one would expect. Husband always orders EFY when we eat at Chinese food restaurants, he said this was the worse he'd ever had. After all the food was put on the table, no one came to the table to ask if we needed anything. No water glasses filled. No tea offered. Nothing. Definitely no Chinese Master Chef there. read more

After living in Boston and NYC for almost 30 years, when we moved to Michigan we have had a tough time finding really great Chinese food. First, the service was very attentive, friendly and professional. The owner also stopped by our table to check in with us which I thought was such a nice exchange. The restaurant is warmly lit, nicely decorated and well-maintained. The star at dinner was the Sesame chicken with freshly sautéed veggie medley. The pork lomein was delicious, as was the pork pot stickers, hot and sour soup, egg drop and scallion pancake. Awful. We have been going to China Garden for years and love it so we were excited to try Mary's new restaurant. Unfortunately it was horrible. I ordered Almond Chicken and it was flat, dry, cold with no chicken. When I took it up front the girl told me that was the bone. I told her it was boneLESS chicken. She then told me "The bone is where the flavor is." I told her again it was boneLESS. I asked for the chef. A man came from the kitchen and looked at my dinner. He made a unpleasant face, shook his head "no" and threw it. I told him he should be ashamed this came out of his kitchen. He informed me he didn't cook it. I asked if Mary (the owner) was there. They wouldn't tell me. I asked for a refund. They acted confused. Finally they gave me PART of the meal price. As I had eaten most of the Hot & Sour soup. It was bland. We chose to have Easter dinner here after church. So glad we did because the food was excellent! How do you improve egg drop soup, they did. I am not an egg roll person but I can say these were the best I have had! The princess shrimp was very good and all in our party were pleased with their meals. I went to china master for dinner tonight and I will never go back. I overheard another table nearby say the same thing. The food was alright, but it was how an employer named Mary treated an employee. Mary was horrible to our waitress in front of multiple customers while we were dining. It was an uncomfortable situation. She was so disrespectful and the employee didn't deserve to be spoken to in such manner. The waitress was kind and did a great job. It continued after I left the building because the employee stepped outside crying as I was pulling out of the parking lot. I am disgusted and felt horrible for her. Horrible food, I've eaten in many Asian restaurants and have never seen food like these people served. I ordered hot tea, the tea pot they brought it in looked like it had not been washed in a very long time, won ton soup had zero color in the broth, no scallions and very soggy won tons that were falling apart, soupy flavor .....then I ordered the lunch special general tso chicken plate with fried rice, she placed my plate in front of me and it consisted of a pile of brownish rice, crispy chicken with sauce on it and four pieces of broccoli lined up between rice and chicken, not one other vegetable, chicken sauce was extremely sweet, no heat....rice I am still trying to figure out what the flavor was.....waitress came back and saw I didn't eat it, she asked don't you like it....i said no, where are the vegetables....she said there's broccoli (steamed broccoli) also no flavor, I said what about the fried rice, there isn't any vegetables or egg, just rice.....she said that's what fried rice is with lunch specials, I will bring you a box and walked away. It was just us and two other people in the entire restaurant so there was no excuse of being so busy they couldn't take the time to prepare a savory meal. Its like the didn't have any vegetables or any kind of flavoring to add to the food......I seriously doubt they have an international chef......deserves no stars read more

The food was good, the serving size was good, but not overly generous. The service was quite good. I am not using the word "great", but "good". Our waitress was kind enough to tell us immediately that the best deal was the specials. They include appetizers and fried rice or white rice. Most of the menu is ala carte. The prices are definitely high. Their sister restaurant in town, China Garden, is also more expensive than the other Chinese restaurants in town. Therefore, I wasn't shocked by the prices, but if you are ordering ala carte you can run up a very big bill in a hurry. We ordered two specials. My wife drank water and I had ice tea (which was a spiced tea and I did not like, but I guess I should have asked about that when I ordered) the bill was $48.00. In addition, we were informed when I went to pay, not when we ordered, that paying with plastic would add another 3%. There is no signage in the restaurant to warn you about this premium. With prices this high, to add more for plastic, debit or credit card, is absurd. The environment was a little nicer than when it had been a Pizza Hut and I was told they have a full bar, but we did not partake in alcohol. Overall, it was OK. The flavors were different than the other Chinese restaurants in town and that may bring us back, but the negatives may override us returning. With prices this high, it certainly will not be a place we frequent often. read more

Can't speak to the food but the hostess/cashier was awful. I ordered two meals and it came to $48! Seemed high so when I asked she told me I upgraded to pork fried rice and that added on $15. I didn't know I upgraded. I simply picked pork fried rice to go with my meal. I was never told the meal just comes with steamed or plain fried. I woulda stuck with the plain fried rice. She was acting like oh no, I thought I told you! No biggie - I asked her to change it to regular and refund me. So she got the manager to make the change, he we very nice. But!!!! While he was making the change, she literally started mumbling and making faces and rambling on how she KNOWS she told me about the upcharge and blah blah blah. I told her no she didn't and she kept going on and on. I even told her it was silly to be arguing lover rice. Honestly she was being rude and belligerent for no reason. The fix was happening, nobody was upset, she just had to prove she wasn't wrong or something. Strangest and rudest thing . Her manager shoulda shut her down. Regardless, I cancelled the whole order and will spend my money elsewhere. Not to mention - stop up charging so much for stuff...give me a break. read more

New place, owned/operated by the woman who owns/operates The China Garden, down the street. (I didn't know it was the same until the older gentleman waiter told me about it.) I was surprised at prices higher than I'd expected. I had the chicken and vegatables with fried rice and crab rangoons. The rangoons were tasty, but I prefer the puffier/softer rangoons. The chicken was tender and the dish was good except for the bad tasting bamboo shoots. I tried 2 and they were both bad, so I just picked the rest out. The fried rice was terrible, but with enough soy sauce and eating it with the entree was ok. (It was dark colored, stuck together, not a good flavor. I used twice the amount of soy sauce that I would usually use, just so that I could eat it. I was really hungry!!) The waiter was gracious and friendly. The place looks great and pleasant music played throughout. I paid with cash because I don't like paying a premium for card use, which other's have referred to. I might eat there again (but I won't get the fried rice!) read more
