This is likely the most authentic Chinese restaurant I have been in outside San Francisco's China Town. On most visits the tables are all full of Asian people, and I am the only Anglo there. I think that says something. The prices are in line with what has turned into commodity Chinese food laces but with flavors, freshness, and quality that outshines the others. There are at least three other Chinese food places closer to my house but I will drive here. There are menus to view online so I'd suggest that you call-in a take out order versus ordering at the front and waiting. If you wait you will have lots of company in a small foyer area with chairs. At first glance you will raise an eyebrow. It's a small place in a dated strip mall on the northeast corner of Rochester and Long Lake Roads. not a lot of fanfare. The women taking orders at the front are very friendly, will take your order promptly while juggling the demands of those seated at the several table in the place. There are the traditional Americanized entrees that you might expect, but I would suggest ordering some on the non-traditional and likely far more authentic items. Everything is very tasty, generous portions, and moderately priced. I have found that making small talk with any of the Asian regulars and asking for their recommendations is very useful to find new and amazing dishes. For instance, without such a referral from a regular customer I would have never tried the shrimp in lobster sauce which is not one of my favorites. I also like their spring rolls and dumplings. What I have not gotten brave enough to try are some specials that are written in Chinese only, taped to a wall next to the counter. Maybe next time. . . . read more

One of the best Chinese I had so far, let alone in Michigan. This is real Chinese food so if you really want to have authentic Chinese and not fussed about wanting to see-and-be-seem then this is is the place to go to. It is clean, simple and homey. Here I have seen the highest number of Chinese people since I arrived in Michigan. This is a great place for families and for casual outing. They don't serve alcohol so if you can't eat Chinese without your Asahi beer, then to-go is your best bet. read more

This place blows now. No more good Pho. It is just some crappy run of the mill chinese restaurant. Get your sweet and sour ____ here. And they royally fudged up crispy chicken. It is now soggy POS with no flavor. It use to be so golden and crispy with lots of flavor. Tip: do not eat here. I will not return. So disappointed. Update: friends convinced me to come back. They have a few decent dishes. But still nowhere good enough. 1 to 2 stars upgrade. read more

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area. The food is delicious and you get so much for your price. The beef with ginger and mushroom is incredible! It's a little bit of a drive for me to pick up the food but more than worth it! read more

THIS RESTAURANT HAS NEW OWNERS. The best fried chicken and best priced for Asian food. And anyone who loves Asian food or wants to experience the best taste of asian food in michigan this is the place. noticed that most reviews less than 3 stars come from.... non-asians who probably like "american" tasting chinese food. like "texmex" now it's "chinamerican" food craving from non-asians. the sign that an asian restaurant is "at least" good is that "asians" eat there. and if you don't like the taste then it means you really don't like "authentic" asian taste of food. so you might as well go look for the "chinamerican" or "amerasian" version of the food you like from other restaurants. tip: not all asian food are created equal. if asians don't eat that "asian food buffet" it's not really "asian taste" good. if asians eat it or love it and you don't it's you who has the problem. maybe asian food is not for you. notice who loves eating "american" tasting asian food? sloppy food for sloppy joes. watch the travel channel and learn from shows like: no reservations and bizarre foods when they go to asia. most asian foods have acquired taste. if it looks good eat it. good eats everyone. read more

Best Chinese food in the city and surrounding area. Huge portions, very reasonably priced and just simply the best.

Small hole in the wall restaurant on 17 and Rochester. Very generous portions on very good food. Tonight we had the curry brisket hot pot, seafood hot pot, salt steamed chicken and fish. The brisket dish was our favorite, great flavor with very tender meat. read more

Why is it so hard to find good chinese food. I went here and got a carryout with a ton of options cause we were hungry and come on its Chinese food. The crab rangoons were ok mix and flavor but they were small. The spring roll was like something from the freezer aisle. The pepper beef was ok. The orange chicken was just weird didn't taste like orange at all maybe they made a mistake on the order. The general chicken seemed to be overdone and not spicy at all. Place was pricey than normal Chinese places. This place is not my new Chinese food place. The search continues. read more

This is my new go-to for Chinese/Cantonese/just-really-good food. The decor is minimalist and humble, the wait staff are friendly as well as accommodating. But the food is definitely the Star of this show. The portions are more than generous (almost to a point of being comical). My hunni and I ordered beef and Chinese broccoli, sweet and sour chicken (his request), and shrimp fried rice. We could have easily fed 4-5 hungry adults. The chicken was moist and crispy breaded. The sauce wasn't overly sweet or cornstarch thickened. The veggies were fresh and the beef tender. I really enjoyed my meal, I'm looking forward to trying the HotPot on my next visit. read more

I always enjoyed the food here. It is not too salty or sweet unlike other americanized chinese-so called restaurant. That must be the reason i can always find old chinese people eating there. My favorites are the seafood tofu hotpot and chinese pork stew(?) Written on the wall (not in the menu) and spicy eggplant. whenever we do not have time to cook, this place is our first option for dinner. I wish they could serve more authentic chinese local food. read more

Best Chinese food around the area. Portion is big, you won't regret ordering anything from here.

Horrible Chinese food. No taste. The ingredients were not fresh. The place seems very outdated.

My husband has a thing for hidden gems or hole in wall spots. I don't know if this place fits that criteria but its a tiny restaurant, fairly cramped up and i was feeling claustrophobic so there's that. Not complaining though I just want you picture about 900-1200 sq ft with round and square tables with several chairs set up. Funky setting but it has a sort of comfort to it. It's like moving in to a new home and not having enough furniture so you make do with random chairs and tables lol idk. Anyway we sat down. The lady that tended to us was so sweet and very helpful with the authentic chinese dishes! She explained whatever we were confused about. My husband ordered szechuan beef since he's a sucker for spicy food and it was loaded with chillies I avoided it right away. It came with jasmine rice. And my husband said it was absolutely delicious and that I was missing out. I order lo mein whenever I'm at a chinese joint and this one was incredible. Super delicious and not greasy, loaded with cracked black pepper and I love black pepper on almost everything. We also ordered beef brisket soup to share and it was very hearty, the beef was tender and the broth was very clean. Added soy sauce for flavor! We will have to come back to try the hot pot and other delicacies!!! read more

The food was pretty good, I was hoping they would have almond boneless chicken but they did not. The noodles seemed a little mushy which isn't common for me when I order chicken lo mein from restaurants like this. read more

I'm beginning to lose count how many times China Chef has changed owners but I believe it's all for the best. The latest owners are serving only Chinese food, so no more pho or Vietnamese dishes guys!!! We came here on Tuesday for dinner and it got packed quickly. Of course there are only 8 tables in the restaurant with 3 of the tables being the big round ones that hold 6 people. We ordered the BBQ pork noodle soup, shredded chicken and shrimp lo mein, and also the special dinner #2: salty and spicy pork chop and fish in black bean sauce. The special dinners are all in Chinese characters so please ask your server to translate. I didn't and scoured the entire menu until I eventually matched the characters to their dish lol. Our dishes came out one by one, typical of any Asian restaurant you go to. The lo mein was excellent with plenty of fresh, crisp veggies and lots of chicken and shrimp. The BBQ pork noodle soup was cooked perfectly and the broth was great with lots of ginger in it. The hubby slurped the entire bowl of broth! My special dinner with the pork chop and fish was also delicious. The pork chop was cut up and deep fried to perfection with plenty of garlic, salt, and chili peppers on top. The fish was steamed and cooked in a black bean sauce with red and green bell peppers. There was only one waitress but boy she worked her butt off and made sure everyone got the correct food without waiting too long. I can't wait to come back! read more

China Chef - beef brisket and wonton noodle soup. delicious!!! beef was extremely tender and wontons perfectly cooked. - Chinese Near Me - Troy, Michigan

We ordered steamed chicken and double fried pork. The chicken still had blood in it. The pork was apparently leftover from days ago, it was so hard to chew and the color looked brownish black, very gross. I mentioned this to the owner, she gave me a I-don't-care look and ignored me. Very disappointed and will never go there again! read more

This is perhaps one of the most unassuming Chinese restaurants that I've been to. It's tucked into the corner of a strip mall, and from the outside, you wouldn't think that it's an authentic Chinese place. The sign advertising Thai, Vietnamese, Sichuanese, and Cantonese food all in one place would normally be a red flag as far as authentic Chinese restaurants are concerned. The interior is simple, with only eight spartanly furnished tables making up the seating area. The food, however, is excellent. The huntun mian (wonton noodle soup) is the best that I've had yet in this area. It truly brought back memories of my time in Hong Kong. The jielan was tender, and the wontons themselves were light and flavorful, without too much salt. The noodles were chewy and had a nice bite to them. The soup, while good, could have been a little more flavorful in my opinion, and that's the only reason why I don't give China chef a 5 star rating. read more

I'm a pho phan, and I was suprised to see it here. I was pleased with my choice. The broth was very tasty, and it came with all the fixin's. I have not had any of the other dishes here, as I tend to go Thai when looking for rice or noodle dishes, but the pho is very good. Ambiance is missing, but the food makes up for it. read more

Three of us met for a quick bite before a business meeting. I was pleased to see Pho on the menu. That was the good news. The bad news was that the Pho and the rest of the meal was pretty mediocre. But first, let me describe the place. China Chef is situated on the east side of Rochester Road, north of Big Beaver, by a mile or so. It is located in a strip mall. It is a small place with just a few tables and some of them are large round ones so you could get a pretty good sized group or family at one of those. The first signal I got that this might not be a stellar experience was the signage on the outside of the restaurant. It said Cantonese, Szechwan, Thai, Pho, .... And it was in a strip mall with lots of Korean businesses. You get the idea. I think it is at least atypical for a tiny restaurant like this one to be masters of all Asian Cuisines. Still, the opportunity to have a new Pho place was intriguing. Well I ordered the "Large Pho with Medium Rare Beef and Tendon." The small was $ 7 and the large was $ 8, so I figured that going for the large was the smart thing to do. The large bowl was pretty large, and it came out with the usual plate of bean sprouts and Thai basil. Also on the plate was a wedge of lime and that was it. Now normally I would have expected to at least see some fresh sliced hot peppers for the after-burn, but they were absent. The "medium rare" beef came out a as a small scant congealed blob of well done beef. That is to say instead of slices of beef, it looked like they had pre-sliced the already cooked beef and just placed in in the soup without separating the slices. The beef tasted OK, but it was hell to separate the slices with chopsticks and a metal spoon. The tendon came out in two large hunks instead of the more typical bite sized morsels. They too tasted OK, but cutting the golf ball sized and anatomically obvious pieces were difficult to reduce to bite sized with no surgical tools. The broth was OK, but nothing like the rich broth served at other real Pho houses like Thuy Trang for example. The rice noodles were fine and the bean sprouts and Thai basil were fresh. So on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate this Pho as a solid 3. My wife ordered the Singapore noodles. I didn't try those, but she said that they were good and mentioned that they were not as greasy as she had experienced at other places. It was a big plate which cost around $ 9 and she ended up bringing half of it home with us. Our other business friend ordered some kind of Kung Pao plate that included fried rice and an egg roll. He said it was "OK." He might have been polite. To me it looked like something I could imagine from having a bad dream about Chung King frozen dinners. The lunch bill came to around $ 28 without tip, which isn't bad. but I would gladly have paid more for a good meal and when we left we agreed that we would not be rushing back any time soon. read more

Went back for the fourth time, finally ordered some dish I don't care for. I love their fried rice and decided to try fuzhou fried rice, big mistake! It came in flat round dish with fired rice at bottom and wet ingredients on top? When it's mixed the texture of rice is really weird, wet ingredients doesn't taste good either. The jindo pork chops taste like ketchup, pork chop is not tough but fattening. Good for fried pork chop but not mix with sauce. I will still be back in the future, but probably won't venture from my usual safe list. read more

We love this place. The food tastes authentic and is hot and tasty. The family size servings are truly family size!

Excellent Spicy Fried Calamari, Wonton Noodle Soup with Beef Brisket is Amazing. Great Jasmine Tea. Highly Recommended!

My grandparents and I ordered takeout from here last weekend. The food was pretty great. We started with wonton soup, which was made with shrimp dumplings. I had never had shrimp dumplings before and I liked them, but didn't love them, I prefer pork. But overall it was good and the broth was flavorful. I ordered the veggie chicken, but it was really like a Moogu Gai Pan (spelling?). It was delicious. What I really liked about the food is that it tasted fresh and the sauces were not "gelatin-y". Would definitely go back. read more

Okay, this was a last minute stop for dinner. It wasn't that great. It was no different than any other no-name carry-out.

This is my family's to go place and we have dined and taken out from this place many times. I've taken my coworkers to this place couple of times and they all loved it. I wouldn't say their menu is super authentic but it's delicious and you should check them out. My to go dishes are the braised beef with daikon radish, the pork in garlic sauce or eggplant in garlic sauce, the house special stir fry, and fried pork chops. I'm getting hungry just thinking about them! read more

Came in wanted to place a to go order, needed a menu but the wait was too long. Very small old place, and kind of dirty. I've been here only once before but it was probably with the previous owners. Any who, wanted some Chinese food and was in the area. There were only two tables and one guy sitting by the door. Another was standing in front of counter where I was behind him. The girl was checking on her tables, gave one guy his order than the guy in front me is trying to place his order. I'm trying to peek at the menu they have taped on the counter with a bunch of other things taped underneath a discolor acrylic/plastic top over it. I can't see anything because the guy is in front of me and you can't see the whole menu that well even if you were in front of it. She's running back and fourth from the kitchen to the phones. When the guy in front of me eventually place his order, I couldn't see the rest of the menu on the counter and and I kid you not I was waiting for 15 minutes. I was really craving for Chinese food so I didn't mind waiting but I couldn't even squeeze in a word because she was so "busy". I got annoyed and left because waiting 15 minutes for a god dang menu was long enough, I wouldn't want to wait longer for the food. Will never come here again, plenty of other Chinese restaurants around town. read more
