It seems like most people get to-go orders nowadays. They stopped pouring water for you and only has bottled water. The food came out pretty fast. The flavor is mediocre. The Mongolian beef is just an OK, or maybe below average. Fish fragrance pork is better, though very oily.

Pan fried dumplings

Based on two visits, one recently and one several years ago, I'm giving them a 4. I've been unable to nail the perfect dish here for me yet, but again I've only been here twice. They offer a large menu so there are many dishes I'd still like to try! Tonight I had their pan fried dumplings and they were very tasty but I wasn't a fan of the sauce that they came with. I also had their pan fried chicken with a lot of veggies, and it was ok. The sauce was blah, at least for me. I had to add a lot of chili oil to give it some flavor. Others may love it as it is, but I wasn't a huge fan. It might be because I ordered more of a Cantonese entree and I'm more of a Szechuan fan... The lady behind the counter was very nice and the place was clean. My food came out fairly quick as well and there's enough of the pan fried noodles for at least two meals. It's a no frills restaurant and most of their business is carryout.

Pan fried noodles with beef and Chinese vegetables

The food is always fresh. I got the pan fried noodles with beef and Chinese vegetables. The beef was NOT chewy like some Chinese restaurants. The beef melted in your mouth. The vegetables were super fresh. The dish had fresh sliced ginger. I'm not a fan of ginger, so I just ate around it. Their garlic fried pork chops are a must! We always get those to share.

My sister and mom and I stopped here on Thanksgiving Day since not many places were open. The space is small! Only a few tables. We ordered green beans, Szechuan chicken, chicken fried rice, and crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon was chunky on the inside but pretty good. The Szechuan wasn't super flavorful but with the sauce, it tasted even better! The green beans were absolutely fantastic! The best part of the meal. Prices seemed reasonable for what it was. We had a lot of leftovers! They also gave us a huge box of rice! I'd return again!

Beef Brisket Hot Pot (蘿蔔牛腩)

Wow, China Chef is a gem! I was craving Cantonese food and a lot of Chinese food in the midwest leans Szechuan. While China Chef has ALL the options Szechuan and Americanized offers, their Cantonese food is stand out & reminds me of the cantonese cafes in California and food I've had in Hong Kong. We ordered: *Deep fried pork chop with salt and pepper (椒鹽肉排) - I don't usually order this but wanted to because it seemed like a Yelp favorite! It was nicely fried BUT I thought it lacked a bit of flavor. I wanted more salt & pepper flavor! *Beef Brisket Hot Pot (蘿蔔牛腩): Wow, super flavorful & the brisket was really tender. They gave A LOT of turnip but that's okay - I'm a fan! *Beef Chow Mian: Make sure to get it liangmian huang -- meaning that it's crispy!! I really enjoyed the tender cuts of flank and the fact that it wasn't super oily. *Sautéed Pea Shoots: this dish isn't on the menu itself. It's written on a pink piece of paper taped to the wall. If you haven't had pea shoots, I highly recommend it! It's pretty mild and is almost like a more robust spinach. For the 4 dishes, we spent $58 pre-tip. The price points are higher than I'm used to in SoCal but we had leftovers for DAYS.

Seafood warbar

This is a nice family owned restaurant that serves authentic, high quality Chinese food. I came here with my family and we enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. The rice noodles with beef and black bean sauce was really good. They used fresh instead of dry rice noodles and there was a generous amount of beef and bell peppers in the dish. The deep fried pork chops with sweet and sour sauce (aka Peking pork chops) were great. They use center cut pork chops, so the meat isn't fatty like it is at a lot of other restaurants. The sauce was pretty tasty, but a touch more vinegary than I'm used to. I also didn't like how much food coloring they put in it. We got a mixed seafood warbar that had a good mix of fresh seafood, vegetables, and fried crispy rice. I didn't try the salted fish and chicken tofu pot since I'm not a fan of that in general, but my family said the tofu was fresh and it was delicious. The dishes here have large portions and are reasonably priced. It's one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area and we'll definitely be back.

Stopped in to this small family restaurant based upon the great Yelp reviews. After one meal here I need to add my own shout out to this excellent restaurant. I find that many Chinese restaurants in metro Detroit produce food that doesn't seem very homemade. Not so at China Chef. I had the delicious deep fried pork chop with garlic appetizer. The peatip leafs in garlic stock was amazing. Best thing I ate tonight. My daughter loved the beef brisket and wonton soup. Brisket was nice and tender while not too fatty. My wife recommends the Mongolian Beef which was tender with good vegetables. We will be back.

Spring Rolls

I'm giving this place 5 stars because authentic Cantonese cuisine is hard to find in the metro Detroit area and this place happens to be the best one I have found so far. Why do I think this place is authentic? Well for starters this place serves classic dishes that you won't find in Americanized Chinese restaurants. Second, having eaten Chinese food a majority of my life, I think I can recognize good Chinese food when I taste it. The food here reminds me of my childhood!! Also it doesn't hurt that when I walked in I could tell I was in a Chinese restaurant. Chinese calendars, writing, and decor were visible a mile away. We got the spring rolls, yang chow fried rice, and xo fish filet eggplant hotpot for takeout. Everything was delicious!! Portions were also very big. We had enough for leftovers the next day. I love how they offer so many of my favorite Chinese dishes here. I will be back to support this local mom and pop gem!

Great Chinese food to go. There is seating available for pay and dine but mostly it's a takeout place now.

There's no waiter. And the boss attitude is very bad. Will not go again. I think it's no reason to treat customers like this way.

Awful food, even worse people. Incredibly rude to customers! It was the absolute worst customer…read moreexperience I have ever had in a restaurant, take-out or otherwise, by far! The guy "tag-teamed" his wife to come out of the kitchen and bicker with me, right in front of multiple other customers, when I "dared" to speak up about their tone and attitude, then repeatedly pointed to a sign on the wall that said "we match your energy" (AKA: "we reserve the right to be total a****les for any and all perceived slights, real or imagined") when I had the "audacity" to complain about how they spoke to me and my dad on the phone and in-person. They were furious that my elderly dad was "taking too long" to place his order for four people (he was not, at all) and acting like it's somehow our fault that they only have a single phone line. Give me a break (take-out only establishment, by the way). They then proceeded to promptly cancel my dad's order and shoo me out, all the while cussing at me in Mandarin, at which point I walked out of there (for the last time). You would do well to AVOID this place at all costs, trust. Not to mention, I've had their food more than a few times before, and it is not even NEARLY good enough to justify them being this nasty towards their patrons. Their offerings are the very definition of "sodium-infused slop" and "mediocre at best" and they act like we are lucky to be allowed to purchase them. What a joke! Do yourself a HUGE favor (like I did) and pay a little extra for a place with WAY better people and service, and MILES better quality food, places such as Shangri-La (amazing!), for example. Never, ever again. You have been warned!

Oh Szechuan Gourmet, I've got it bad for you. Your food is so good-tasty and fresh, never greasy or…read moresoggy. So fast. So flavorful. Love the husband and wife duo that run this place. BUUT why are you closed every time I'm craving Chinese? I get it. Everyone deserves time off. You're a small family business. Work-life balance, as they say! But I want my (huge, perfectly crisp, bursting with deliciousness) egg rolls dammit! I've even got my parents who live in Arizona hooked on you like a drug. Only to be disappointed whenever they are in town-sure enough you are closed! It's becoming a running joke in my family. I'll call and get a busy signal on your single phone line as many times as it takes (11, to be exact tonight). Today, I hit rock bottom and ended up getting the most awful/greasy/disappointing almond boneless chicken and salty weird wonton soup from another establishment, like an addict who needs her fix). Never again. I understand that good things come to those who wait... I'll keep waiting for you, Szechuan Gourmet. Please be gentle with my heart. And my tastebuds. And my GI tract.
