They had a lot of to go/take-out food waiting for pick-up which was a good sign of the quality. Portions are great size for the cost. We had the special and ordered pork chops with spicy salt and fish filet with black bean sauce- my 2 favorite Chinese dishes. It comes with wontons, soup, and egg rolls. All was fresh and tasty. *Review is only based on the salt and pepper chicken wings.* I recently moved to the area and have only had salt and pepper chicken wings from 3 places in the area. This place is by far the best. For those who know the famous spot down in San Diego, Chula Vista to be exact, that has the best Salt and Pepper wings on earth, this place is very comparable. Thankful, I don't have to make that hour drive to get my wings anymore. Our experience was terrible. The food was bland and my cashew chicken had a fish bone in it. My mom ordered a shrimp noodle dish and again it had a fish bone in the soup. The service was mediocre at best with the server forgetting napkins and utensils. They only had one person cooking and our food took an usually LONG time to get to us. We asked for boxes and had to ask a second time in order to take my son's leftover food we had left. My husband kept saying he smelled chlorine or something of the sort. I normally like their food here but last time it was way too salty and they were out of xiao long bao. XLB is usually the reason why this place pops up on our radar. And even when they have XLB, you have to ask for the special sauces. Otherwise they won't provide it. Prior to my last visit I'd probably would've rated this place a four star. Should've known though. The restaurant is never more than a third full. And I don't recall seeing Chinese eating here. Aside from it being too salty, the pan friend whole sole was nicely cooked. And the rice was fluffy (a lot of Chinese restaurants make it mushy). Probably won't visit this restaurant anymore. Sad too. I like supporting ma & pa spots. Oh well. Although not huge and not fancy, the restaurant is clean, the staff are very friendly, and the aromas make u want to eat everything in sight. I was greeted immediately and even offered drinks while I waited for my take out order which includes the salt & pepper shrimp, cubed filet mignon (pepper style), orange chicken (which is white meat), and veggie fried rice. If the food is as good as it smells and as the service provided then this place deserves five stars and two thumbs up as Chinese is my all-time favorite type of food! Three and a half years later, it is time for a short update. We had returned to China Chef several times per year during the noted time span, including this afternoon, during both dinner and lunch times. I will now upgrade and give them my 5 star rating for Temecula, until/unless I find a better Chinese restaurant in town. After ordering various entrees over those years (honey walnut shrimp, Mongolian beef, crispy beef, et al), but primarily sampling the wife's dishes (as she seems to change it up routinely), I have never tasted anything that was NOT delicious. However, being a creature of habit I continually gravitate back to their Kung Pao 3 (chicken, beef & shrimp). I personally love the flavors and I like that the red chili peppers are generally cooked down, not stiff as I have experienced elsewhere. The plates are always loaded. The egg drop soup is also one of the tastiest I have had. The egg rolls are okay, but nothing really special. The fried rice can be hit or miss, but never completely bland. The last couple visits we would order a side of their sauteed green beans. Why? Because every time they are cooked to perfection, a slight char on the outside with a nice little crunch factor. We also like the sauce they are cooked in, and they don't come to the table all oily. Oh, and the salt & pepper chicken wings are still GOOD TO GO! Anyhow, we had to hit the place up today because for the third time since Covid they (along with everyone else) are having their indoor dining shut down by Riverside County via Sacramento. They will be offering takeout and delivery while trying to stay afloat, so we'll probably hit them up again in the near future. I personally will do my own pickup (takeout) if I do. People complaining about their Doordash, Grubhub or whatever delivery service that THEY choose to hire have made it so I won't roll the dice on that issue. Complaining about their food arriving cold, or what have not, I'm sure is probably 90% on that service - not the business. But, they ding the business! Go figure... Alas, nothing beats the freshness of eating indoors and being waited on! They did mention they will try to have some "outdoor" dining over the next couple weeks, but I am not fond of eating in parking lots or near heavy traffic. read more

Ordered Door Dash last night. My order was Orange Chicken, Pork Pan Fried Noodles and a cup of Hot & Sour Soup. I was really looking forward to having a good supper as I have have had a hard time eating since my surgery. I received my order and unpacked the bag and I thought oh boy! My cup of soup was now the bowl size, as I opened more packages the Pork Pan Fried Noodles were plain nothing on it or to accompany it, lastly the Orange Chicken-wasn't Orange Chicken at all. It looked like a red congealed mess and when I tasted it even though it was pretty tasteless what I could taste was more General Tso flavor. Though I saw a pepper and seeds there was no heat much less taste except for grease. All this for $36.26 which included delivery, prep, tax and tip. Colossal waste of money. I must be missing something here. I came in because the good reviews and I loved the old Chinese place that used to be here. Well, I definitely made a mistake... We walked in and it was completely dead yet no one wanted to greet us it seemed. We waited a few minutes. A young lady eventually came and took us to one of the many empty tables. We asked for two high chairs and she brings us one. She could clearly see my husband and I each had a baby in our arms (I have twins). Whatever, we asked for another one and waited. We sat down at a table that had food around the floor of it. So many red flags yet I still order one of my favorite drinks here...Thai tea with boba. It was terrible. Took two sips and couldn't finish it. Boba was hard and the tea did not taste like Thai tea. Waitress could clearly see we were not enjoying our meals but could care less to ask why. Right as we were finishing up I could see why....The entire staff was sitting down in the dinning area eating lunch. Really? So sorry to come in during your lunch break.?? None of the food tasted fresh and it was really more of a waste of money all because i felt like Chinese. Grrrr. read more

This place is okay, nothing to rave about. However, I like the fact that they used canned bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and wood ear fungus mushrooms in the chicken with garlic sauce dish. I was especially excited to see wood ear. It is one of my favorite things to eat. It helps lower your blood pressure. My husband got their General Tsao's chicken and he thought it was good but not great. Another good thing about this restaurant is that they serve green onion pancakes. It was good not great as we are spoiled by Earthen Restaurant in Rowland Heights. My dish came with rice, an egg roll, and a soup. I chose fried rice and boy, they don't know how to make fried rice. My "fried" rice looked like soy sauce rice. It lacked the other ingredients that a normal fried rice has. My husband ate my egg roll and said it was good but lacked substance. I chose egg drop soup and it was too eggy, too much eggs. Everything tasted clean but there's something wrong with the exposition. It's also expensive to eat here for okay Chinese food. P.S. The atmosphere in that restaurant seemed cold...not much decor, only white walls. read more

Authentic Chinese restaurants are incredibly lacking in the Temecula area, the Chinese places here can be divided into two categories, Americanized takeout joints (Panda Express and the other heat lamp places) and "sit-down" restaurants (PF Chang's, Chin's etc) where you have a nice ambiance but are eating the same Americanized food but on a plate with silverware instead of a takeout box lol. When you enter China Chef, you know you're in for the real deal. The dining area is basic and unadorned consisting of vinyl covered seats and laminated tables, but look past that and you can see the open kitchen where the chefs are hard at work, conversing in their native Cantonese over the symphony of their ladles and spatulas clanging against their woks, the famous jet stove burners roaring with the aroma of wok-hei in the air. Yes, this place also serves American-Chinese food (one has to in order to survive in this area) but all of the traditional Cantonese staples can be found like the various "Salt and Pepper" dishes (Pork chop/shrimp/ chicken wings/ squid), along with "Siu Mei" dishes like char siu (bbq pork), roast duck, steamed whole chicken with ginger scallion sauce, and on some occasions roasted pork belly as well. If you can't find it on the menu, the main chef and manager, Mr. Ken will most likely be able to make it for you! If you live around here and don't wanna drive to Convoy street in SD, or Sam Woo in LA/OC this place is your only choice. read more

My husband and I tried this restaurant out for the first time and sadly I was not impressed at all (not even a little bit). We decided to eat in and were seated right away as there was only one other couple eating there. The male waiter was rude and you could tell he did not like his job. I ordered the kung pao chicken lunch special with fried rice and an eggroll. My husband ordered beef and green peppers with fried rice and vegetable eggroll. The chicken didn't taste like chicken, and the beef didn't taste like beef; nor was the kung pao chicken spicy. There were huge pieces of green pepper in each meal (pretty much raw), the fried rice was super dry and flavorless. The eggroll was crunchy on the outside with the paste like vegetables in the inside. The water was pretty good and the lunch special price was decent $25 for both meals. They must have the family working in the location because they had young kids in the kitchen; one of which sounds like they hurt themselves pretty bad. Man the ONLY thing holding this restaurant back is it's decor. Drove by for years and finally decided to give it a shot and was legit blown away. Menu is huge and we ordered soup dumplings, salty fish tofu, mushroom beef, westlake beef soup pot stickers and house special lo mein. Food was all authentic the rice was also cooked perfectly they used expensive mushrooms not the cheap ones. All the food had attention to detail and was delicious, I couldn't help but write this review and hope they invest in some curtains vs mini Venetian blinds, paint the interior, and get rid of all the blue furniture. Adding a cute young hostess could really improve the overall experience too read more
