I ordered large crabmeat fried rice and all they put are scrambled eggs, peas, lots of onions and maybe 5 pieces of tasteless crabmeat. If you will charge your customers for almost $20 for large portion, we are expecting to see more than 5 pieces of crabmeat. It's terrible. It's unbelievable. Well, SEAK in Edgewater, when you order crabmeat fried rice for $25 your fried rice is oozing with crabmeat and they are delicious. read more

This is my go-to Chinese spot in town. I have ordered takeout here numerous times and have dined in the restaurant as well. My favorite things to order are the lo mein noodles and boneless ribs. I love how chewy and flavorful the noodles are they always taste fresh. Another recommendation is their soups - I love their chicken noodle soup and even though its served in a little bowl, it's made really well and a great way to start a meal. I have never had any issues with service when I have dined in - I've eaten in the restaurant side and at the bar. The drinks are super cheap and not shy on the liquor. The are also very quick when getting your takeout order ready and they have very cheap combination platters (around $6 and it comes with your choice of fried or white rice). I have never come here for the dim sum but maybe will check it out on a Sunday. read more

Not so many places for dim sum in NJ. Dim sum is the best thing here. Hot and delicious. Free parking. Service is not is much. I would give them 4 stars if they have an improved service. One time on the very busy lunch, I asked for the sauce to eat with my dim sum, the server said "later later I'm very busy here." I don't expect perfect service like a five star hotel. But their service sometimes is fine and sometimes is too much with attitude. If you can just ignore of their service. Come for their food. read more

China Chef - Dim Sum Near Me - Secaucus, New Jersey

I'm huge fan of dim sum. Very limited dim sum menu. However, the food is very good . I had an egg roll, shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, and honey walnut shrimp. Restaurant is very outdated- pure 80's vibes. I would be down to order it for late night out. read more

I had low expectations given how bad the other reviews are here but everything we ordered was yummy We came on a Sunday noon for lunch and got seated right away. This place doesn't have as many dim sum carts going around as other places, in fact we were seated in the corner and they actually didn't even want to come to us. We ordered a few dim sum dishes including radish cake, shrimp dumplings, egg tarts and they were all very yummy. The radish cakes were one of the best ones I've had. We also ordered beef pan fried noddle and the satay beef casseroles and both were fresh and delicious. Took off one star because service was a bit lacking and prices are steeper than other Chinese places in the area. Overall a solid place. Come if you want authentic Cantonese food read more

Wasn't a big fan of this place the food wasn't good to me and seems a little high price for low quality. I did enjoy the duck sauce that came in the container. Their garlic sauce is not what I'm use to it was too liquidity and not good. read more

Great place I've been coming for years. Their ribs are amazing, expensive but so good. The egg rolls suck. So if you are fan of egg rolls you'll be disappointed. The grand mariner shrimp is a must try. FYI they have some of the best home made hot mustard. read more

Food substandard The French fries my wife ordered were stale My shrimp was undercooked for the prices they charge I expected better food quality Never ordering from them again. read more

Service is sub par. How is it considered dim sum if the cart just sits around and you have wait 20 mins for someone to come and start pushing it around. Drinks ordered when we sat down and never came until we asked again. Shouldn't have wasted our time or money coming here. read more

Wasn't a fan of the fried rice I believe. But def Best sweet and sour chicken I think I ever had. Good price fast delivery. Highly recommend

China chef is the best Chinese restaurant you will ever taste in your life. 10/10 definitely recommend when you do not know what to eat

If I had to do a quick elevator pitch of this place, it'd be "Hop Kee level food without having to schlep over to Chinatown". China Chef is not your neighborhood Chinese store with the bulletproof glass. Decor wise, the place has an old school vibe and a dining room that probably seats close to 80 people. They serve quality Chinese food in huge family style portions, which makes this an ideal large group hangout. I've never done dim sum on the weekends, but I've heard it's excellent. Top 5 reasons to go China Chef: 1. It's a holiday and nothing else is open. 2. The delicious Beef Chow Fun. 3. The tiki drinks (odd, but welcome). 4. The Walnut Shrimp you can't get anywhere else in the area but Chinatown. 5. You live/work in Secaucus and pretty much everywhere else sucks. read more

Note this is a review of when Dim Sum is served on carts during the weekends and holidays (11am - 3pm). Since going to China Town is not a frequent occurrence for me, China Chef does a good job of serving Dim Sum when I do not want to drive very far. I'm assuming since you are reading this review you know the concept of Dim Sum. This restaurant has the usual selection of food on carts (a variety of shiu mais, dumplings, beef/fish/shrimp balls, buns, etc.). As a tip, order your drinks right when your tea is placed on the table, the restaurant is usually busy during Dim Sum and to be honest, do not except the best service when Dim Sum is being served. Most of the time you will need to flag someone down for drink refills and orders on the regular menu. However, they are good with bringing each cart to you once seated, so I would suggest getting the food you want then. Also, the food on the normal menu is good, the fried calamari is alright (I'm biased to the Italian style calamari) and the pan fried noodles are delicious and well-prepared. They also have lobsters, crabs, and a variety of fish on the menu you can order. Sometimes they will have someone walking around with uncommon dishes, so just be attentive so you can get this food without waiting to order it. My mother would also get the snails here, which are good as well. Finally, their egg custard is good to have at the end of your meal. As for the restaurant layout, it is small and can be a little cramped when it is busy. The layout is not ideal for Dim Sum cart service, which is a reason why you may see the carts not coming around you as much, since they are catering everyone, which is why I mentioned before about getting all the food you want on during the first trip. Even though this place is busy, I have usually been able to get a seat once I come in. So unless there is a special occasion going on, you should be able to sit immediately. read more

If there was a button for 0 stars, I would give it a 0! I will NEVER step foot in this place again!!!!!!!!!!! I ordered pepper steak with white rice and an eggroll. First of all, the food was swimming in oil and the egg roll was not edible because of all the oil that was dripping out of it. Secondly, the pepper steak was disgusting! I took a bite of the pepper and when I realized it had a funky taste I spit it out and noticed it was all moldy. As I looked at the other peppers in the dish, they too were full of mold. When I showed the hostess, she argued with me saying that the pepper was fine and there was nothing wrong with the dish. Obviously , I could not eat it. I was so turned off that I wanted to leave. After arguing some more, I still had to pay for a moldy meal! When I told her I would never step foot in there again she told me she didn't care because she had plenty of other customers..... Really?!? If the food isnt bad enough, the restaurant is also pretty dirty looking and outdated. I am afraid to see what the kitchen looks like. Oh yeah, as I was walking out the door, the woman yelled to me, "you will be back". I yelled back, "I can assure, I won't." read more

My family has been coming here for years to a point we're buddy buddy with the owner. We get pretty decent service for the 15-20 heads they have to serve. During weekend lunch or brunch time they do dim sum which isn't too bad. Overall the food is a bit too greasy and oily but it still tastes pretty good. My favorite entree dish is the fried flounder. It has a good amount of crunch on the skin and soft and silkiness of flounder meat drenched in soy sauce. Second favorite is the yeung chow fried rice. It's a classic but serves a hefty portion. The dim sum favorites are the pork shumai, fried shrimp ball and steamed shrimp balls. They are all really oily but I don't mind it. They used to give ice cream with fortune cookies on top of it but last time I came here they gave out slices of orange instead. The decor could be more updated because its starting to look like its on its last breath. I pretty much come here with my family because I'm not the one paying for it. If it wasn't for the dim sum and the numerous times I've been here with my family I probably would have rated it lower. read more

The food was good. We were so sure we were going to come back to this place, until this happened. So this was our first visit to the restaurant. 3 people serves us. One nice lady took our order, a second guy brought us our food and the third OLD guy brought us out check. We gave him a $2 tip which he refused to take and told us the tip was 15% of the total bill which was included in the bill. We payed off and left. To our surprise, he came running after us, yelling at the top of his voice " YOU DID NOT GIVE ME TIP" " WRITE THE TIP". "ITS THE LAW" we told him politely to write the tip down because we didn't know how much would 15% be, but he kept yelling in front of all. Now I know i am NEVER going back to this place. They should train their people before allowing them to take guests. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED! read more

I've come here a few times for the dim sum and it's alright, not anything special and not a great variety either. I guess that's to be expected, I haven't been able to find a good dim sum place in the area. All the good ones are in Chinatown. Overall I guess it's alright, not terrible but not fantastic either. A lot of the food comes out cold and it's like it's been sitting there for awhile. Service is good though so no complaints there. read more

Disappointed at the dimsum selection here. They don't have congee. At one point, one of the waiters brought out a tray of steamers, yelling "shumai! shumai!" and there were no covers on the steamers. It was so off-putting and unhygienic I had no appetite after seeing that. The service was not the best, the waiters were actually arguing and cursing in Cantonese at each other, and was kind of disruptive. They pushed over the cart of steamers, but we got no response when we asked what they have. We had to ask specifically if they had hargao and shumai before we actually got them. Maybe they thought it was bright enough from natural light through the windows, and decided to leave the lights off. But it got so bright when we stepped outside, that it felt like we were dining in a cave. read more

Excellent food at the cart service. They don't come round very often though. Last time I waited 20 minutes between carts. Maybe a staff shortage? Don't know but it's a bit frustrating having to wait. read more

If you live in Jersey and do not want to drive into the city for dim sum then this is the place to go. They do cart service on the weekends (11:30am-2:30pm) and a la carte on the weekdays. Just like chinatown do not expect exceptional service. Good dim sum for a reasonable price without the toll and parking situation. read more

The service is not friendly, but the food and drink were out quick. Also, our table was always taken care of with fresh plates, utensils, and removal of used items. The food was much better than your typical Chinese restaurant. I enjoyed my meal and took a bunch home. read more

Quality of dim sum as well as service has went down significantly. Save your time and money and go somewhere else. Servers stand around while people are waiting for the carts to come around. Food is not ready even at 1pm when its supposedly the height of dim sum dining time. Poor service, poor quality food. read more

My family went here many times over the years. We used to love the seafood pan fried noodles and the Hong Kong style chicken. During our last two visits, we noticed the quality of the food went down. They gave us smaller portions and the food wasn't as good. The staff was always inattentive - forgetting to bring us our drinks and charging us for them, taking forever for little requests like more soy sauce or extra tableware - but it was something we could overlook because of the good food. With the drop in food quality and the indifferent staff, I don't think I'll be back here. read more

My boyfriend loves dim sum, so I went here just to shut him up for a while. Thank goodness he is Chinese or I would have felt completely misplaced, the people that work here are NOT friendly. When we first got seated nobody asked us what we wanted to drink, we just sat there for around 5-10 minutes. Another table of 6 got seated across the restaurant from us and was served with drinks and food RIGHT AWAY. Finally the person with the cart made their way over to us, didn't say a word. All he did was look at us and then the cart. My boyfriend started talking to him in Chinese, so then he became a bit more friendly and conversational. One person that worked there did notice I was struggling with chop sticks and brought me a fork, which was kind and greatly appreciated! There was also one nice lady bringing around food, but those were the only two nice people that worked there. The food was pretty good, the sesame balls were really yummy. I'm a vegetarian so I stuck with the veggie dumplings, both fried and steamed. I wouldn't go here if there were other dim sum options, the people are just not friendly at all... horrible customer service. read more

Going on the weekend is a must for the dim sum lunch. The dim sum is always warm and fresh. For dessert that have coconut jello which is to die for! I frequent this place often and love the pan fried noodles - when you order to-go they package everything separately so that the noodles don't get soggy. I definitely recommend this place!!! read more

Before we start any of this review I have to mention the huge elephant in the room this place is overpriced. OK back to the review I went to China Chef with a really great friend who is of Cantonese origin he confirmed that the meal was very authentic which I thought in my very Americanized mindset. The overall ambience average and cleanliness of the place meh and the was food good, the service is what it is. I went in with minimal expectations in terms of attentiveness and overall service based on reviews - it was a little bit better than where I had set the bar. We enjoyed steam dumplings, pork buns spareribs, Shumai shrimp rolls and a few other items. Our server was relatively nice HOWEVER the only issue is that he misunderstood the fried rice order and instead of one order he brought us two at $12 a pop! that's an issue. I possibly could understood if I ordered the item - a potential for a language barrier however my dining companion ordered and spoke in Cantonese but that's neither here nor there. Another important point to mention is that the staff is very fluent in the English language - awesome! Guests where majority of Chinese/Asian origin but the Parton make up was still diverse - age, ethnic, racial etc. this made the experience even more pleasant. I would definitely do it again while it is disgustingly overpriced (especially with that extra fried rice)...if I factor in what we would have paid for parking and toll to go into Chinatown NYC this isn't so bad. It's a nice local dim sum option for us cultured Jersey folks lol read more

The hubs and I were craving some dim sum and decided to check this place out. We arrived just past 11am but had to wait about 30 minutes for all the dim sum items to be ready to order from the cart. I will not post a review here that doesn't talk about China Chef's dim sum! ^_^ We had the salted fish and chicken fried rice which was strong in flavor due to the fish. It was really good, though. The diced chicken thighs were tender and not overdone. This rice was white, not needing the usual dose of soy sauce because ofbthe salty flavor of the crumbled fish which was throughout this dish. We also got the China Chef Casserole, which was served in a miniature pot. It had glass noodles, a fantastic broth, straw mushrooms, carrot, and a mixture of fish. Very good. The service was meh. One fellow was working his tail off, while the other two were busy doing nothing but socializing. Strange. This was better than we thought it would be, but due to the lack of more traditional Chinese fare, we may skip this place...maybe we'll stop for dim sum? We'll see. read more

Dim Sum is great, a little over salted maybe. Dinner was terrible though! We expected Chinatown level Chinese food, it was not up to par. Food was definitely made for western taste, not authentic. Wouldn't go back for dinner. read more

I've been here before, but today wasn't a good day for this Chinese. Ordered lunch special, pfr/chicken lomein, which include a piece of steel wool. Best non-takeout General Tso's Chicken in town, crispy, spicy, hot, not mushy, not watery, not chewy...I hate GTC like that!! So I like this place a lot! Love how the give you the crispy noodles and duck sauce as soon as you're seated. Service seems like they speak limited English but they've always been extremely polite and NEVER got my order wrong over the years of coming here...My wife enjoys this restaurant as well. Would give 5 stars but the takeout and delivery is much different than eating there, definitely not nearly as good. Also don't like looking at the fish tank when I'm eating...it kinda grosses me out :) But now I'm just being picky! We are going here for Christmas this year, they are open! Can't wait for some Christmas General Tso's! Traditional right? :) read more

It does the job in terms of dimsum, but there are definitely better places out there. The service is less than stellar, but what really bothered me was them serving shark fin dumplings. Whether or not they're using real shark fin is one issue, and if they are real shark fins, that's another issue. I can't patronize this kind of behavior. read more

You got a 2 because you're the only dim sum option close to jersey city. Dim sum options are quite complete so cant complain much about that. Though slow business may be te main cause of their dry and tough ha kau (shrimp dumpling). I got my chix feet fix so I left quite satisfied. Don't hope much for service. MSG overload also guarantees sleepiness after dim sum. Just like the turkey afterfact. read more

Well, if one ever needed a reason to visit Secaucus, it would be to go have Sunday dim-sum at China Chef, of course! I am only a dim-sum novice, but having had it a bunch of times in a bunch of places, this is currently the reigning champ of dim-sum spots for me. The taro one is my fav, the one that's like a bird's nest wrapped around bit of some whipped taro with ground meat. But the others are also very nice here. read more

This was my first time here after covid. They used to be pretty good. But this time it was really bad. They only had one waitress (one cart going out with the food). They should plan better and have more people working specifically on Sunday mornings. read more

I'm not sure why this place only has 3 stars. I love this place. I've come here a few times now for dim sum. It's one of the best and only places I've eaten true dim sum near north NJ. We tried a wide selection, and all if it was good. They bring us hot sauce. My favorite dishes are shrimp dumplings, pork shumi, sticky rice with Chinese sausage in Lotus leaf, and hot and sour soup. I can tell that I like their food because when I try the hot and sour soup, it's not like another Chinese restaurant. It's not overally salty, and they add hot peppers to it. It was delicious. Great place to get dim sum in the Jersey area on the weekends. Pretty good selection and up to par with Chinatown. I have been here a few times during the week as well. They have a large selection of lunch combo options for a great price (comes with soup and an eggroll). There is a lack of dim sum during the weekdays since it is not in demand. excellent food, but unfortunately subpar service. as is the case with the majority of dimsum restaurants, it's apparent that they prioritize efficiency and taste over customer treatment--some will be ok with this, some won't. i became annoyed initially because the hostess largely underestimated the wait time, which seemed to be more of an attempt to make us stay than a pure accident. in addition, our drink orders were never taken, and when we looked around the room, barely anyone else had drinks either. no biggie for us to ask, just a little strange. but if you're like my family whose sole priority is the dimsum, then perhaps the issues i've described wouldn't matter. in terms of taste and authenticity, it's up there!! read more

Dim Sum is the best i've tried so far, even comparing to a few places in chinatown, but i must still search for more in chinatown. Their food selection is good, and they can make authentic chinese dishes as well as the americanized chinese food. I prefer the authentic stuff. Decor is dated but they try to keep the place tidy and painted. My family have been customers for the past 20 years and are still satisfied to this day, it also helps that you're chinese! At least it helps with us! read more
