Well priced for Chinese food. The orange chicken is really good. The garlic chicken is good. The foil chicken is a disappointment. The chicken itself is good but you only get three tiny foils of it. I have been to China Caff for the fourth time now, and I've got to say they have been pretty consistent with their service as well as the food they serve. Thus, I think its about time I wrote a review for them. I haven't been to all the Chinese restaurants in Merced quite yet so it will be difficult to draw a comparison. Starting with the restaurant setting, China Caff is one of those places that tends to get past up a lot since its located on the corner of G and North Creek. Thus, not a lot see it while driving by, and if they do don't give it much thought unless they are hungry. That said, the plaza setting gives it that "shop in the corner" feel that not much go to unless someone tells them too. On the outside, the restaurant looks presentable which gives it a plus. Probably the only weird part is the water run off from the AC unit housed on top of the building. Once you enter it looks like any other small family run restaurant. A plus, there is a lot of space so it doesn't feel crowded which makes eating comfortable. In the day time, the lighting is pretty good and there's no direct sunlight, so the overall temperature is tolerable the added AC is welcomed. The setting itself is pretty simple, which does not make the place itself intimidating. This is good since it does not scare off any potential customers, but maybe could do some decor to give more of that Chinese restaurant ambiance. On to the food portion of the review. The biggest thing that China Caff has going for it is the amount of food given for the what is charged. Believe me when I say the price charged is a deal, which is on average $6 to $9. This seem like the same for most restaurants, but it evens out with their serving portions. The deal breaker here are the combo deals for the food. The food in general is admittingly a tad bit greasy, but if you can look past that its fine. In reference to its popular item, orange chicken, there can be times when it can be overcooked; however, I have not encountered this. What I can say is they cook it fairly well as to retain the crispy texture of the batter. This applies for all the fried products in their menu. Depending on what you ordered the amount of sauce does matter. In reference to the orange chicken its quite tangy, though there are times when it can be a bit saucy. For other items, such as the ginger chicken, I find can be a tad bit salty. But that's just me, I know for most of the customers are fine with that taste. Other times, such as their honey walnut shrimp came out fine, though if you're not prepared to eat the skin, then don't order it. Otherwise, the flavor is quite mellow which is followed by the sweetness in the sauce. Another item would be the chow fun which I enjoyed. It was not bland, but had the right amount of soy sauce which kept me entertained. The won-ton soup was alright as the salt in the broth was not too strong. Though the one time I had it, I noticed a frost bitten flavor of the shrimp contained in the won-ton. Overall, the food is quite good. On the plus side, the food is well prepared and service is great. Some negatives would be the fact that the food can be a tad bit more greasy than normal at times and maybe a little more saltier than what most are use to. To conclude, China Caff is not something you would want to eat everyday, but if you need something to eat and not want to spend too much, China Caff is the answer. Thus, I give China Caff a decent rating of 4 fortune cookies out of 5! read more

Grabbed lunch here with my husband, the service is great. The drinks they give you are refilled which is sometimes rare at Chinese restaraunts around here (sometimes you're given a can of soda). I ordered beef broccoli and steamed rice, my husband had a giant combo plate and we shared an order of egg rolls (which were really spring rolls). The food is fresh and delicious. If you're looking for a quick, affordable, and amazing lunch then this is definitely the place to go. Their lunch special is the best bang for your buck in town, coming from a 20 year Merced native. The lunch special is $5.99 and there are many dishes or combos to choose from. They give a very generous amount of food and exceptional service, which I think can make or break a restaurant. I always get their orange chicken with chicken chowmein put some chili and sirachi on it and go to town, and drizzle it in soy sauce. The beef and broccoli is pretty good too but I wouldn't recommend their spicy beef with veggies. I had it and didn't enjoy the mix of flavors. If you want a cheap meal to get you buy on those dry days then this place is for you if not I would suggest steering far away from this place. Their food is okay not the best I would eat panda express over china caff anytime. When I do come, on those days where I have little money in my pocket I usually order the lemon chicken with chow mein and fried rice it's okay and fills up my stomach. Last time I went there though my friend had also ordered lemon chicken but instead of cut chicken she had chicken nuggets, literally nuggets like circular ones you buy at the frozen section in food maxx except this one was smothered in lemon sauce..My friend and I rarely come to this place after that incident but for a broke college student this place is a gem. read more

This place is disgusting. The boyfriend and I walked in and there were dirty plates and dishes everywhere. The waitress was just sitting there talking to a friend while me and my boyfriend were just standing there. She finally comes over and asks us where we wanna sit, and we say the booth seat. She tells us to sit in the chair seats instead because all the booths were dirty and she was too lazy to pick it up. Wow. Not if that wasn't bad enough, the food sucked. I ordered the sweet and sour pork with chicken chow mein and fried rice. Absolutely no taste in the noodles and fried rice. The sweet and sour was too fried. So good and so affordable! I love the braised tofu, and there are combination plates available for meat eaters. They said they could customize a vegetarian combo plate but it couldn't have the braised tofu because that has to be one size. (Huge!) My boyfriend and I have been fans of Hibachi Buffet since it opened, but we were getting tired of the spread. Last Friday, we decided to try the China Caff since we love the one in Turlock. The food is great, heaping portions that make 2 meals easily. It's your traditional americanized Chinese, so if you're looking for the "authentic" experience, go somewhere else. Cheap, filling, tasty, enjoyable. The family is quiet and unobtrusive; the decor is dated, but clean. I had the garlic chicken combo, and my boyfriend had the garlic chicken/sweet & sour pork combo. We had no complaints, and there were plenty of leftovers. We were surprised there weren't more people dining, as we were the only ones in the restaurant. However, there were tons of to-go orders being picked up every few minutes. After a long day at work, we decided to stop in again last night. I had the string bean chicken combo, and my boyfriend had the same garlic chicken/sweet & sour pork combo. I cannot rave enough about the black bean garlic sauce on my entree, it was fantastic. Just the right amount of salt, and obviously not from a bottle because I could taste the fresh garlic. We also had the hot & sour soup, which wasn't as flavorful as others we've tried, but it was tasty nonetheless and the perfect temperature.
