My boyfriend and I have been fans of Hibachi Buffet since it opened, but we were getting tired of the spread. Last Friday, we decided to try the China Caff since we love the one in Turlock. The food is great, heaping portions that make 2 meals easily. It's your traditional americanized Chinese, so if you're looking for the "authentic" experience, go somewhere else. Cheap, filling, tasty, enjoyable. The family is quiet and unobtrusive; the decor is dated, but clean. I had the garlic chicken combo, and my boyfriend had the garlic chicken/sweet & sour pork combo. We had no complaints, and there were plenty of leftovers. We were surprised there weren't more people dining, as we were the only ones in the restaurant. However, there were tons of to-go orders being picked up every few minutes. After a long day at work, we decided to stop in again last night. I had the string bean chicken combo, and my boyfriend had the same garlic chicken/sweet & sour pork combo. I cannot rave enough about the black bean garlic sauce on my entree, it was fantastic. Just the right amount of salt, and obviously not from a bottle because I could taste the fresh garlic. We also had the hot & sour soup, which wasn't as flavorful as others we've tried, but it was tasty nonetheless and the perfect temperature. This is the second time that I have come to this place. You really can't beat the price, quality, and quantity of the food. I typically call in and the food is ready within 5-10 mins. The vegetables have the right amount of crunchiness which is what I like. Their sweet and sour pork is on point! You can actually taste the pork and not some mystery meat. The food here is great. I always get the chow mein, fried rice, garlic chicken, and sweet & sour pork. They never fail to amaze me with their huge portions and amazing tasting food. One thing, I've gone two times where the chow mein is lukewarm and it wasn't a problem for me, but most like it hotter than the temperature it was served at. Super cheap prices for the food. They definitely give you huge portions here. The left over garlic chicken and general tao's chicken are still sitting in my frig. I will probably toss them out. I didn't like them. I did like their beef chow fun and the green bean chicken. The beef chow fun was excellent. Additionally, the wonton soup wasn't very good. As other yelpers have pointed out, the service is very friendly and attentive. This dead shopping center could definitely use more UCM students' business. read more

I think this is probably the best Chinese food in Merced. Its freshly made and delicious and the portions are HUGE. I'm a pretty big guy and I usually have about half left to take home. Cheap too. I suggest the #16 because it comes with battered fried shrimps and they are so friggin good. You can sub pretty much anything I always sub for the Kung Pao Chicken. They use freshly chopped veggies and will cook it to the level of spiciness you like. Fried rice and chow mein are good too. I like the family atmosphere in there, their kids will sometimes take you order which is cute and they are usually playing or doing their homework on the other side of the restaurant. Its a good place to sit down and eat we get two entrees an appetizer, soup, and it always come out to about $16 read more

I didn't like the pork at all! It was suppose to be smothered with all of the sweet and sour sauce... It wasn't! The fried rice was not flavory and the chow mein was so so. Top it off the chicken with chow mein had bones! I could've choked on the bones they need to be more careful about how they cut the meats. Never going back there. While the food tastes ok, I can't for the life of me figure out how this place possibly passes a health inspection. This place has seriously gone downhill since previously being Lee's Chinese Restaurant. On my way back to the bathroom I couldn't help but inspect the kitchen and pantry. There are bugs EVERYWHERE. Cans of "Raid" are stacked on the shelves and the rice is in a wide open barrel that the owners children p lay in. The service is ok but don't dare say you don't like something. For starters my friends and I came into the Bearcreek shopping center in hopes of finding a Papa Johns. It was our luck to get there and find out it didn't exist. With a craving for almost anything (starving college students) we decided to give this place a try as we had heard it wasn't half bad. Let me start you here. As soon as you walk in to the facility it smells very fishy (1st suspicion) . We sat down and I slid a finger over the table to discover it was incredibly sticky (second). I ordered my food and had a gut feeling I did not belong here. I ordered the number 13. The food came out, which was really impressive. The chicken was soggy and tasted and swimming in sauce. The chow mein was incredibly dry and low in flavor. The prawns weren't too bad but the rice oh noooo but it was mushy and incredibly soft. I love it here. I'm not gonna say it is gourmet Chinese food but it is pretty tasty to me. Their prices are great and the portions are awesome. Chinese food in general seems to be a very personal thing to a lot of people. They pass judgement based on their prior experiences and what they believe "authentic" Chinese food should be. I just want to say that if most Americans knew what real Chinese food was they would have a rude awakening. I've had close friends from China with no prior knowledge of "Chinese" food from the states prepare me a feast and it was awesome. Some of it was delicious and some my palate could literally not handle. Where they were from in China truly bitter and sour tastes are considered the norm. Like I said some of it was great and some I just couldn't adapt to. If you feel that it isn't your type of Chinese food place then move on and don't bash them. In my experience the staff here have always been as sweet as can be. I personally would definitely recommend. To each there own. :) read more
