China Boy Bakery is back! After a short hiatus during the pandemic, Anna is ready to serve her customers like they're her family. You can't beat how warm and friendly she is. She's just so thankful for every person that walks in. And her food is delicious! It's Chinese comfort food at its best. It's a bit more expensive than Chinese fast food but the menu has the classics. Their chow mein is so good. Additionally the orange chicken is perfectly crispy and sauced. She makes these chicken wings on sticks and in addition to tasting good, they're also easy to eat because of the sticks. If you're lucky enough, you should definitely try Anna's walnut cookies. She doesn't always have them available but they are so buttery and delicious! The one thing I'll say is that you may want to plan to get the food for takeout. How have I not known about this place???? Apparently China Boy Express has been open for three years, and I had no clue ... what the what??? As a seasoned Montebelloan? Montebellan? Montebelloian? (wtvr) I'm kinda disappointed in myself. I must admit I was a bit hesitant before entering. It's not a very traveled area of Montebello, but my fellow Yelpers seemed to like it so I gave it a shot. Jose, the owner, was really inviting and upbeat from the moment we entered. Luckily we found a seat - there isn't much seating, so beware. Jose gave us a few suggestions, but in the end we went with: 1- House Special Fried Rice: Not too crispy, but really flavorful. 2- House Special ChowMein: A good ratio of noodles-meat-veggies. 3- Orange Chicken: Crispy and not too sweet :) 4- Shrimp w/Garlic Sauce: Love the sauce! Do not be fooled by the small store front. This place is a gem. Right next to Tom's Burgers on Maple & Olympic. Almost everything is less than $7. Great Chinese food AND desserts. They prepare everything once you order so it may take a while but it's worth it. What we usually do is call about 15 to 20 mins ahead of time so it will be ready by the time we get there. Let's start with the food: The Spicy Shrimp Fried Rice $6.75 This is our favorite dish from them. The rice is never too oily, the shrimp is cooked perfectly (they also do not hold back on their shrimp plates like most places, they give you a good amount of shrimp), good portions of the veggies and egg. The House Special Chow Mein $ 5.95 This is such a great deal. Chow Mein with chicken, pork, AND shrimp. The noodles they use now are thinner than before but they are still delicious. The Wonton Soup (I don't remember the price but it's less than $7) My favorite place to get Wonton Soup. Again they give a lot, especially when it's takeout. The broth has a good amount of flavor. The Kung Pao Chicken (Again, I don't remember the price but I'm sure it's less than $7) I only recently tried this but I loved it. Again they do not skimp on the meat. It's very flavorful. The Egg Rolls (I believe they are $1 each or 2 for $1, I don't know off the top of my head) They put Chow Mein noodles in their Egg Rolls. LOVE IT The desserts!! Anna (the main chef) is amazing with both the food AND pastries. I don't know how she does it. She makes these great chocolate balls usually with a strawberry in the middle. Oh My God. They are delicious. So moist and soft. They also make great MOCHI filled with peanut butter coconut. And also really good cookies. I haven't tried a cake yet but I will soon. I only assume its amazing. They can make any custom dessert, just ask. Anna is very kind and sweet and her family is great. The main waiter is Sebastian and he is a sweet kid. I went for the first time tonight. I ordered the chicken fried rice and egg rolls and my bf got the teriyaki plate. The taste was good, a lil salty. The portions are huge! Neither of us could finish our meals. So, I suggest sharing! My only complaint was having to wait over 30 minutes for my food, but at least it was made fresh, so that's a plus. I was craving Chinese food late one night and didn't want to drive to Alhambra. Service was really great. They kept apologizing for the wait but it really didn't take very long. They ran out of the Shu Mai which sucks because I was really wanting some. The house fried rice was really good. I know it seems like it's hard to mess up a good fried rice dish which is true, but it's hard to make a standout fried rice dish and they nailed it. I wasn't a big fan of the Chow Fun, though. The noodles seemed a bit dry and maybe could have been cooked a little longer. Flavor was good, I just didn't like the texture of the noodles. They're open really late so that's a plus. I ordered the wor wonton soup. Traditionally it's a very light broth with great flavor. Not here though. Once I took it home I noticed that the broth was dark in color. After the first taste I realized this was not the traditional soup one gets at most Chinese restaurants. This soup was super greasy, it was actually so greasy that I left it over night and it wouldn't come out of its container when I was trying to throw it out.
