The Clock has been here for over forty years. Longer than most marriages. Longer, certainly, than…read morethe one my parents had, which lasted closer to thirty years and ended, according to my father, because of a disagreement about a sectional sofa. As I pull into the parking lot, I think about how a place that has lasted this long makes everything else in town look a little "new." Inside, regulars shake hands across the dining room like it's Sunday after church. I can't keep a houseplant alive for six months, and these people have been coming back to this same place, to order the same food, for years. Chili cheeseburger after chili cheeseburger, building something between community and cardiology. Maybe that's loyalty. Maybe I'm just projecting. I look at the burger for a second before I eat it, the patty, the chili, the cheese, maybe onions, stacked up like it's been doing this exact thing since before I was born. It is genuinely, embarrassingly good, in the way things are good when they haven't been overthought. And it was delicious in spite of health value. If you're eating at The Clock for health value, I direct you to the salads with prejudice. The menu runs from salads, to tacos, to hot dogs to a meat and three (or for those in Greer, a meat and four), which is not a range you encounter often in a single establishment. It is the culinary equivalent of a man who says he can fix anything. You are skeptical, and then you watch him fix the thing, and you don't know whether to be impressed or slightly ashamed of your own limitations. Ask anyone around town and they'll tell you about roller skating car hops, late night gatherings after high school games, real ice cream milkshakes. Those stories aren't really about the food. They're about who they were when they ate it. I order the sweet tea. It arrives cold and correct. I'm certain my dentist has a handshake agreement with Jimmy that both will keep each other in business a long time. I will come back here, but not as often as I should. We all have our faults. The Clock has few.

(If you're…read moredriving down Wade Hampton, pass the Home Depot and Lowe's, and get to the QT-Walgreens-Spinx-Taco Bell intersection, turn north and you're nearly there.) The original location, further south behind the Hibachi Cafe, was "cozy" (real estate agent-speak for "small"), but this new venue is large, wide open, and has both a covered patio and outdoor seating. Laminated menus are available at the door, but you'll need to walk toward the back, get in line, and order at the bar. The staff is pretty quick, and the menu is succinct enough that the line usually moves fast. After ordering, you're given a coaster-pager and can find a picnic-table-like place to sit. I usually get a burger, but this time I went with the Classic Chicken Sandwich, $12.50. It's a generous panko-encrusted breast with lettuce, tomato, and some fine dill pickles. Tender and juicy with a good crunch. My wife got the Classic Burger, $15. This big ol' burger is a thick Angus patty with American AND mozzarella cheese and dill pickles. I got the really good, hand-cut, crispy fries; my wife opted for the house potato chips. Either side is a great choice, so we shared. Our lunch guests shared their House Pretzel with us. Each comes with a side of beer cheese and maple dark mustard, $9. The pretzel alone is worth the ride out there. Warm and soft on the inside, with a hard--almost tough--authentic German-style crust. The two sauces are equally great, and both were also very good with my fries after we fought over the last bits of the pretzel. Our two Diet Cokes were remarkably cheap for these days: $1.85 each. I suddenly thought it was 1994 again! JUST BECAUSE it was October, we got the pumpkin cheesecake. My wife made a very wise decision. It was more like a whipped pumpkin pie than a cheesecake in consistency, with an oat crust and a sprinkle of brown sugar and whipped cream on top. I could have eaten two more slices of this sweet, light dessert, but at $7 a slice, I held back. With Greer's hospitality tax and SC sales tax, our bill came to $45.33. We've only gone to the new location for after-church brunch, so I'm not sure if the menu changes radically from week to week. The menus have limited dates at the top, so I'm guessing there's some item rotation. I've heard the dinner menu includes a bratwurst, which I'd love to try. Overall, it's an easy place to drop in and grab a higher-end sandwich. Side note: Years ago, we tried the place when it was behind the Hibachi Cafe. The server was annoyed with me because I didn't understand a question, and that spoiled any thought of trying the place again. I recall a soup being rather nice, but I felt like I was a mere annoyance. It's sad, but it doesn't take much to turn customers away. I'm glad my wife wanted to try it again at this new location. She is far wiser than I am

Especially with their website advertising "NY style pizza" which is always my favorite to find. We got the Margherita pizza, which was made well, tasty, and had thin crust, though definitely not considered "Italian," as the pizza had no sauce. It was practically a white pizza with toppings, not an authentic Margherita. With a side of some marinara though, it definitely added some of that missing flavor! Service was also quick, despite it being a busy night, and there was a large selection of drinks. The atmosphere was full of energy and loud music too, which wasn't a problem. I'd definitely go back to try other pizzas!

Henry gets the mini corn dogs, has for years, though we've now heard whispers that once they're out, they're gone for the rest of time, no substitutions, which has turned his order into something closer to a small bet. I get the same thing every time: the 10 inch personal pizza, pepperoni and onions, and two PBR liters. I've never once considered another combination. This is not indecision. This is a system that works, refined over years of Fridays, and I see no reason to disturb something that's already won. -- UPDATE: Wild Ace responded directly to address Henry's corn dog anxiety, confirming the mini corn dogs are staying and new kids' meal options are coming soon. Henry has not yet been informed of this development, mostly because I want to see how many more Fridays I can get out of him worrying about it.

Ambiance was a little lacking for what I thought would be a more upscale restaurant. Their food was meh.. and service was a little slow. Our server was attentive, and very nice. The menu was printed in the smallest font I've ever seen, and the descriptions were not easily understood nor did they match what the dishes actually were. We also tried the Carrot's with benefits.. they were the best dish we had and the other couple ordered them as well! We tried the pork & dirty rice spring rolls, they came out rolled like a cigar, served in an old fashioned black ash tray. They were disgusting.. the filling was like a pate,b/c it was liver, not as described. The flavor was awful. No one in our party of 4 liked it. Next we tried the sweet potato gnocchi, again.. very unusual.. presentation was very good, flavor of the sauce was great, but the gnocchi was two whole long logs, not little pieces.. and it was very undercooked or RAW?! At first the server & one of the chefs said that's how it's supposed to be. Later as we're leaving they apologized and confirmed it was undercooked. Lastly we ( husband &I) got the halibut.. it was better than the previous two dishes.. but nothing great.. who takes a whole piece of halibut and cornmeal crusts it? It made it taste a little greasy.. but overall it was decent. I wish this establishment the best, but I think they are trying to be too creative and unique and missing the mark on just making good tasting quality food.
