This place was recommend by the nice couple we stayed a weekend with. The building was on a corner lot and dark from the inside so we drove passed it. Of course parking was hard to come by. As soon as we came through the door the host was looking at us like 'why are you here?' We were looking at him like 'are you going to seat us or what?' It was awkward. He realized we were customers and not lost so he told us to sit where ever we would like. It was small, cozy, and dimly light inside. Mole sauce to die for, hibiscus tacos (awesome!) - everything is fresh, unique and delicious (no stodgy cheese here). One of my two all-time favorite cocktails - Martinez #2 - also here; uses oak-barrel aged tequila! Place is dark and funky - photos of famous old Mexican movie stars, older music. Chilangos is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Providence. It's a small family-run establishment with innovative riffs on the extraordinarily high quality classics. The decor is charming with a small bar and 2 dining areas. The staff is helpful and engaging and is always willing to make recommendations. The complimentary chips and salsa are the perfect accompaniment to perusing the menu. Deb: The dishes are all well-portioned for sharing. We had the hibiscus quesadilla, a chicken mole tamale, and a braised brisket with blue cheese and fig jam taco. The taco may just be the most perfect taco bite ever...sweet & savory with tender and flavorful brisket. Ken: Still not sure why Deb kept this place from me for so long. My God! The food is good! One of the most interesting, and good, things I've eaten in a long time was the hibiscus blossom quesadilla. They strain the blossoms from the hibiscus tea they make fresh in the restaurant and sauté them with chilies and a bit of sugar. It all goes in a tortilla with some cheese. It's been years since I've been here. Somehow it fell off my radar. I came in today for a late lunch. When we first walked in there were no customers which worried me. Have no fear, Chilangos is still crushing it! The margaritas were delicious. I ordered tacos (3 to an order, $2 each). I got pork, beef brisket, and chicken. Pork was my least favorite. It was pretty fatty and not really seasoned. The brisket was ridiculous and the chicken was smokey in a red sauce. I also ordered a pombaza de tinga. Pretty sure I spelled that incorrectly. It's a sandwich which rules. I'm too lazy to describe it. Just check it out next time you're here. Chilangos, I will be back! read more

I stepped into a dimly lit ambience, ethnic music softly playing, and decor of a colonial Spanish dining room, at least that's what it felt like...there were 3 families, Spanish, already there and the place is pretty spacious for any number of guests. Parking in the area can be sketchy esp'ly when you're not from the hood or not familiar w/the area. It's also AC on a 72 degrees kinda day so might wanna bring something to throw on, ladies... Traditional margarita, was juicy and balanced. Half way thru I felt a good buzz lol. Uno Mas pot favor! Lol Chips/Salsa-complimentary, was served after my drink was ordered and is not for the faint taste buds if you're not used to spicy-ness! However, it is home made fresh among the good ones I've had. Guacamole, which FINALLY came out for an appetizer btw...was worth the wait! It had such a creamy texture to it and flavors of lime, parsley, onions that I could taste cause sometime you can't taste anything but bland guacamole =\ Michoccanas, enchilada topped w/shredded pollo, cheese on a bed of what appeared to be fried tostadas? Was served con arroz y refried beans. It was ok...wouldn't order it again tho, mediocre. Mango margarita, pretty good. So far my impression is that Id come here for the drinks and appetizers... Chilangos has a very nice atmosphere, The restaurant is very clean and the menu was very simple. The drinks are fantastic I had the house margarita and my boyfriend had the mango margarita which were both delicious! The chips and salsa were by far the best I'd ever had! For an appetizer we ordered the nachos, they had pickled jalapeños on top. I'm not a big fan of pickled jalapeños but other than that they were pretty decent. For our actual meal we both ordered the burritos. I have to say the burrito was pretty disappointing. It was just very basic. I ordered the steak burrito it had American cheese and steak wrapped up in a tortilla. I reminded me of a steak and cheese sandwich with beans and rice on the side. chilangos in Highlans is usually very good, but I was very disappointed today.. I ordered Choriqueso FO an app and was very good very light on the chorizos this time. For my Entree I ordered Chihuahua steak, Rare with no chipotle sauces the steak was cooked more to the medium well side and the grill marks tasted so burnt like it hasn't been cleaned in a while. Dessert was fried bananas caramel The bananas were burnt beyond recognition deep fried in oil that tasted like it has not been changed in Months!! And no vaniilla ice cream.,The I ordered a pitcher of Margarita's that were suppose to be premium and there was about 1 oz of tequila in it had more ice than anything and was charged $50 dollars for which is ridiculous!! At a friend's house, just a mile away, five of us hopped on over to Chilangos! The place was pretty busy, which I suppose is normal for a Friday night. After about 10 minutes, we were seated and got some orders in. The free salsa was delicious. It had a few of my friends sweating, but I'm a huge fan of spicy and I couldn't get enough of it. We all split a monster pitcher of margaritas. It was alright, but maybe a bit too sweet. I took the advice of many reviewers and went with the Villa Burrito. It did not disappoint. Lotsa flavor!! The al pastor pork is phenomenal, wrapped up with all the usual burrito fixings. The side of rice and beans was solid too. Great little spot! They have multiple different tamale choices, great selection of tacos, and fun drinks. They also put a funky flair on traditional dishes (for instance, they make a pumpkin mole!). In a city that doesn't boast a spate of places to get excellent, authentic Mexican food, Chilango's gets my vote for best in Providence's show. Non-touristy, affordable, cozy and welcoming, Chilango's serves up delicious food that, I have heard, evokes all the comforts of home for folks who grew up eating tortillas, enchiladas, flautas, salsa and tacos whipped up by their parents and grandparents. A meal here is not a far cry from eating in the large dining room of an extended family member, who really knows how to cook. Chilango's gets extra points for serving Mexican soda in a variety of unusual, fun flavors like tamarind. If you've ever wandered down the international food aisle in the grocery store and looked wonderingly at the items on display, you can satisfy some of that curiosity here. No review of Chilango's is complete without a word about the bar. It has the coolest seats in town: large, real horse saddles. No kidding: these are a built-in sobriety test. As a petite woman, I always struggle with the most refined way to handle these: demurely perch side-saddle upon them, or commit to a full-on straddle? So, while I wasn't in love with the entree I ordered at Chilangos, I was in love with just about everything else: the service, the salsa, the guacamole... The place is adorable, and even though I had issues with my meal, I will definitely go back for another round. Their menu is great -- wonderful taco, enchilada and burrito options, delicious cocktails and nice beer choices. I definitely recommend getting the house-made guacamole in addition to the complimentary salsa and chips they bring to your table, as it's out-of-this-world good and seriously addictive. My husband had a trio of tacos that he absolutely loved, so I think this is likely what I'll order rather than the enchiladas verdes that I choose. There wasn't really anything wrong with them -- it just wasn't for me. The waiter picked up on this immediately and asked if he could get me anything else. When I declined, he was gracious and sweet and when we asked for the bill, he had removed the enchiladas all together, which really impressed me since a) I never complained about them and b) I never for one second even considered not paying for them. That's the kind of service you can expect from Chilangos, so I will definitely be back as they obviously value not on their customers, but their customers happiness with their experience. Best. margaritas. ever. Humongous, made with only freshly squeezed limes (not mix- we watched the bartender make them), and only $7. Also, the burrito that only has meat and cheese (called the "Villa" I believe) is to die for. No lettuce or tomato, just the most delicious pork al pastor you've ever tasted in your life. Definitely enough for leftovers. My boyfriend got the burrito and I kind of wished I'd ordered that. I got the enchiladas with mole, and I'm not sure I would again- the mole sauce was top notch, as were the black beans on the side. But the actual enchiladas barely had any cheese in them (disappointing because that was the whole reason I'd ordered enchiladas- I love cheese), and they were also covered in small diced raw white onions, which I didn't care for and couldn't really scrape off. It didn't say onions on the menu- otherwise I would have specified for them to not be included. So it goes. Service was also a bit odd, since we had to wait for over 40 minutes for a table when there were clearly several tables that weren't being used. Mexican food is something I crave. But I am not talking about the Chipotle-fied type of "Mexican"...I mean the real deal, authentic stuff. Which I know, living in New England, can be quite a tall order. But I think my quest is over...it ended at this little gem, Chilangos. From the outside of this Manton Avenue restaurant, it would be easy to dismiss it, but inside it has a simple, warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff is friendly, and you get the feeling that you are eating in someone's home - which is always a nice feeling! We were given tortilla chips and a fresh salsa that was wonderfully spicy when we were seated. We started with drinks...my friends ordered margaritas, which were made fresh with house-made sour mix, and I ordered a drink called a Michelada, a mixture of beer, tomato juice, lime juice, and Tabasco. It was surprisingly refreshing with a kick! We ordered a queso that we added chourico and onions. The gooey hot cheese was served with toasted bread and was DELICIOUS!!! My friends ordered burritos, while I ordered the enchiladas with a dark mole sauce. My friends burritos were HUGE, stuffed with what they said were perfectly-seasoned ingredients. One of them, the Chilango's burrito, had a spicy chipotle sauce in it, and it is what I will definitely try next time. BUT...let's talk about the enchiladas for a second...wow, is all I can say. I love a good mole sauce, and this was the best mole sauce that I have ever had - rich, subtly sweet and a perfect compliment to the chicken and corn tortillas it topped. The hubs and I split three small plates for lunch/brunch and we could only finish 2 of them. We got the guac which was unbelieveably fresh, tasty and cream, the tacos which I can't stop thinking about and tamales, which were very good, but didn't have mariachi dancers la-coo-ca-ra-cha-ing through my head like those tacos. It is so funny to read over that first review because now 2 years later this is one of my go to places. Chilangos is a step up in ambiance than most of the Olneyville latin restaurants and the drinks (Perro Salado is my favorite) hit the spot. The same workers are always here, friendly, and on point. I've tried several dishes on the menu but keep coming back to the enchiladas. They offer about 6 options here and each can be filled with your choice of meat or potato. Chilangos is delicious and reminds me of being in my grandmother's kitchen in Mexico as a young girl. The tortillas and salsa are homemade. The taco appetizer is typical of a taco street vendor in Mexico with cilantro and onion. For Providence? Amazing. Best place in the city, easily. Casual, but not dirty taqueria casual, has tequila, and isn't very expensive. Grab somebody who appreciates the awesome things in life and who's company you love. Walk there. Enjoy the evening air. It's not that bad. Go up to the cramped little bar, awkwardly straddle a saddle, spin around a little, reach slightly farther than is comfortable to keep your face over your plate so that your food doesn't fall on the floor if you miss your drunk mouth. Their margaritas are pretty good, the people who work there are friendly and the food is authentic, tasty, and fresh. It's much better than a bunch of white kids sloppily wrapping up a mediocre burrito for you on the east side or trying to deal with the idiots that crowd that stupid shithole Tortilla Flats. If you want to forget you're in Providence for an hour get over there. Just not when I'm in town, please, because I hate to wait in line. read more

After a weekend full of tacos, tequila, and salsa, I happily ended up here for a late dinner on Cinco de Mayo. Save the best for last indeed. It took us a while to get a table, so at first we were ushered outside to the back under a tent set up for a party. There were a handful of other people out back dancing and enjoying the rockin' 12-person band (yes, 12). We ordered a pitcher of margaritas (muy excelente and served at least four full solo cup size glasses) and started digging in to the provided chips and salsa. Placed an order for guacamole and our entrees and hung out for a while. Eventually a table opened up inside and we headed in since it was getting a little cool outdoors. Our guac took a LONG time (30 minutes at least) and required a few check-ins with out server to make sure it was on its way. There had potentially been some confusion, but we ended up getting comped an extra bowl of guac due to the wait or the fact that they just made two bowls since we had been asking pretty regularly for a status update. This was seriously delicious, friends. You can thank the guac gods for this little gift later. Out of the three of us, two of us had to re-order our entrees as they had run out of some items. I ended up with the cactus salad which was massive and delightfully refreshing after a weekend of heavy eating. We also ended up with some tequila shots. I am a wuss with most any type of straight liquor, especially tequila, but this was so smooth, and I felt like a badass for being able to drink it without wincing. I think I overheard that it was imported from Mexico. It's a pretty small restaurant overall. The tables and seats are all hand carved wood done by the owner. It's a really beautiful touch. And to make it even better, it is super affordable! I figure the service was spotty since it was Cinco de Mayo so I am sure they had been packed all day. And honestly, the food and drinks were so good, as well as the friendliness of our server, that the wait time can't even detract from my overall experience. Five stars. read more

I finally made it to Chilangos after intending to make the trip for several months. I had gone up with a couple of cousins back in August, but none of us were smart enough to check their hours and arrived on a Wednesday to a closed establishment. Live and learn - I stopped in for a quick lunch last Friday with a friend on the way up toward Boston. I ordered the tacos and a michelada. The michelada was refreshing and well spiced; the perfect beverage to wash down delicious traditional tacos. There are apparently different meats available each day, so I have something to look forward to during future visits. The meats I chose this time were steak, pork and fatty steak. Each one was a flavor explosion and exactly what you would find on the streets in Mexico. I'll happily make the drive up to Providence for Chilangos any day! read more

And I hate when people use all caps.... so that alone should tell you something here. It is down Atwells at the beginning of Manton, it is well lit on a busy street across from a busy gas station. Relax people. Don't be scared to wander out of your gentrified neighborhoods.. its ok.. the food is worth it. The carved wooden tables are the first treat walking in.. followed by the friendliest staff. We had the cutest little waitress tonight who seated us ASAP and before we knew it an older gentleman brought us our chips and salsa. Home made salsa is so good... spicey and full of cilantro.. perfect start.. screams to be chased by some tequila. In the past, I have dabbled in their Margherita menu, but they can be on the sweet side. so I was happy to see the new menu tonight with the Perro Solado on it.. tequila, lime juice and grapefruit soda... it was perfect. Tart, some salt on the rim, and not too sweet.. my new go to drink. Now the food... I call this Authentic Mexican, but I have never been to Mexico, so I could be wrong, but it is genuinely good.. not covered in sour cream and monterey jack cheese.. so I am going with it. I got a sope.. which is a thick flour cake sort of thing covered with pastor (marinated pork) lettuce, and queso fresco... with a little house salsa on top... so good. Next had the Enmolados.. which was enchiladas with shredded chicken.. covered in there amazingly tasty, spicey, chocolatey mole sauce... so effing good.. with some queso fresco and creme fraiche. Comes with a side of black beans and rice. Tasty, flavorful, well prepared.. delicious. So yeah, the food is great... who am i to say whether or not it is 100% authentic.. I know it is 100% good.. made with care.. and that is what is important. The vibe in this place id friendly, and warm.. and can be wrapped up in a short phrase.. as we were finishing up eating.. the older gentleman who brought out our chips and salsa came over to clear our plates and asked us how it was.. we were all smiles... and said great... he responded with an even bigger smile and beamed with pride.. as he said "mi casa es su casa".. and thats what is all about. Warm corn tortillas with black bean soup stuffed with pulled pork with a tangy kick Chicken quesadillas with stringy, yummy cheese was out of this world. Nothing "flats" about this Mexican food I would like to start by saying two things: 1) I am not an expert in Mexican 2) I know good food Proving to me yet again that Providence has a beautiful culture of food that stretches beyond "The Hill" . I love tucked away spots like this. When we pulled up in Onleyville at Chilangos we were a little nervous as by the outward appearance there is nothing special about this restaurant....it took about half a second to see you can not judge a book by its cover. From the carved wood seats to the clean, well thought out use of there space. The Chips served within moment of you sitting down are made in house and are amazing, not oily, very crisp and served with a spicy salsa. We got tamales and the super veggie burrito. We arrived not very hungry and figured that worse case we would take some home....the food was too good and we gorged ourselves completely. The guacamole that came with the meal was a small bowl of the stuff and as we did not want to offend, we consumed all that as well. We will be back, and next time I'm wearing my eating pants! read more

Came here for a late-night date with my girlfriend last month. The parking is super sketchy without very good markings around the whole block, but we made it out alright. It's really a nice place to sit and eat. The staff is pretty young and attentive. It's a small little joint with sparse wall decorations. We ordered the queso which was surprisingly thick as we're more accustomed to thinner queso down south. It was pretty darn tasty, but the longer we were going at it, the thicker it became naturally. Still very, very good, but a little tough to work with I got the burrito done with pastor meat (pork done with pineapples). It was absolutely delicious, was a great size and filled me up. My absolute favorite was the horchatta. Took me straight back to my friend's Mexican place down in Austin, Texas. I've since gone and picked up food a few times from them and it took me more time to get there than for my food to be finished. Absolutely best place. read more

I love Chilangos!!! I have visited a few times and each time I had excellent food and service! I will describe my most recent experience: My boyfriend and I ordered enchiladas. I had the plate with verde sauce and my boyfriend had the first enchilada choice on the menu. My favorite part of the plate was the beans!! I've never had such flavorful and delicious Mexican beans. They can be so blah sometimes at other restaurants I have visited. We also ordered spicy guacamole with chips. The homemade salsa was spicy, fresh and delicious! The spice was addicting and I could drink it with a spoon. We also had Negra modelos (which were draft)! This was a perfect beer pairing to those heavenly beans!! The service was great! This establishment must be doing well because on my most recent visit I noticed they have updated the inside (very restoration hardware in a tasteful way) and there was air conditioning. If you're the type of diner who judges a book by a cover, or a restaurant by its storefront, I challenge you to make the exception for Chilangos. Inside a relatively nondescript building in Olneyville sits a festive Mexican masterpiece. Adding to its charms are Chilangos' bright colors, beautiful wood detailing on the booths and tables, warm service, and delicious food. Also, funky little features like a family table that manages to be intimate (with plants and a half wall) despite its position in the middle of the restaurant on the second level. Also on the second level, at the bar, some of the coolest stools I have ever seen: SADDLES! You have to have a BEERGARITA! Yes, a beer margarita. After a few more tries Chilangos is now my favorite Mexican restaurant. I have been continually impressed by the warmth of the servers and chefs and their willingness to let me know the ingredients and preparation methods of the food. The veggie enchilada entrees are all amazing (I've avoided the boring chicken since my first visit). I like that the veggies change each time based on what they have fresh in the kitchen. The beans are AMAZING, and the rice is fine. Both the red and green salsas have a nice kick and are fresh and tasty. I've heard that the quesadillas are also very good. Best of all in my book is that they make their own tequila, and they prepare mix for the margaritas fresh on the premises. (also of note are the saddle barstools) read more

I am not sure people with the negative reviews know much about authentic Mexican food. I don't know what they are looking for, be it big CA style burritos or tex mex style food but that is not what Chilangos does. They serve up extremely authentic Mexican with good meat and good style. I have been extremely spoiled on good Mexican by living just north of Pilsen/Little Village in Chicago and being inundated with fantastic Mexican. Wow! Kind of a sketchy neighborhood, but what a treasure they have here! This is the best authentic mexican food I've ever had. My advice, splurge on the ala carte menu, and ask them to make you a quesadilla with carne asada (amazing). This place is beautiful, clean, packed with spanish locals (a good sign) with friendly service and amazing food. I highly recommend it! Chilangos is the secret restaurant that everybody you meet seems to know about. It's also the kind of place you could easily drive by without a glance, never imagining that carved wood tables and saddle bar stools lie inside! The menu is long and offers many inexpensive, small items. If you're feeling indecisive and hungry, the chicken mole enchiladas are fantastic and filling, served as a full meal with beans and rice. But a great way to experience Chilango's is by ordering a few small items. The one I am always drawn to is the chiccharone gordita - how could you go wrong with corn dough stuffed with fried pork rind? They also have a number of drinks.
