Now, their kung pao tofu is delicious, and the vegetarian fried rice is tasty. For each dish they give you a tiny box of white rice. Unlike most Chinese restaurants that give you a generous portion of rice, their portion is tiny. Baby sized. Not that we need more rice; just an observation. Take out orders come in a fancy durable reusable bag (a plus) and fancily packaged utensils. The experience feels like a feast. Bourbon chicken is good but wow the chunks are so huge, making them difficult to eat with chopsticks. Typically in Chinese cuisine, chicken is cut to smaller bite-sized pieces to make it intuitive for chopstick users. Bourbon chicken is heavily breaded (just FYI) Soup dumplings still good as usual; their lamb dumplings are also great.

Ordered the Mogu Shiitake Mixian Noodles like last time; overall it was solid, though the hard-boiled egg probably could have benefitted from a little more time in the broth, but it was near-closing, so not a big deal. Unfortunately, the service quality has ebbed since my last visit. My server, while outwardly calm and friendly enough, was eager to remind me of their imminent closure thrice during my meal. I eventually had to say "Yes, I'm aware" to ensure I understood. I suffer from heartburn and need to pace my meals, so this felt like a rather passive-aggressive "get out". Moreover, I asked at the end of my meal if I could apply a $5 off coupon I received for my birthday. The server told me that the manager has to be on duty in order to apply the discount code, and that they already left. I found this bizarre, having worked with Toast POS systems before, I know this isn't a difficult thing to train your staff on. This was compounded by the fact that I had to wait an additional 10 minutes for another employee, ostensibly an assistant manager, to apply it, and she wasn't even aware until I flagged her down. Again, solid fare; always love when I get to stop in to Yunnan for that reason alone, so I still recommend it. Unfortunately, I think the management should circle back on a few items with the staff in terms of service quality.

Chinese is often a takeout cuisine, but this place was bustling and had more of an interior ambiance than I expected. My food was ready in a timely fashion, but for some reason they didn't include the drink I ordered, and it wasn't even on the printed receipt; maybe they have some separate system for drinks or something. They resolved this and got me the beverage I paid for quickly enough. From a reasonably diverse vegetarian selection, I ended up with a sauteed cabbage dish with jalapenos which gets a bit soggy as leftovers but provided some needed fiber, as well as a fairly basic but tasty homestyle tofu. Their ma po tofu had a significant note of astringency and visible peppercorns, although not a ton of numbing sensation for some reason. Overall, it was a very soy and garlic set of meals. My toffee tea likewise was not fancy, but delivered the promised flavor. Portion wise, three dishes mixed in various combinations yielded three full meals. You could go a long way in DC by putting out pretty good Chinese food, and that's what this place is doing.

We've since ordered multiple times, but the quality of the crispy beef has been inconsistent. Sometimes it scores a five, while other times it dips to a three, likely due to different chefs preparing the dish. I noticed this firsthand during my last visit when I picked up my order. Though I was excited to indulge in the crispy beef again, it turned out a bit tougher than usual. No service issues. Restaurant is clean and inviting. I'd love for TNR to refine this dish so it maintains its deliciousness consistently, as I truly enjoy it and will definitely be back for more.

We have gone through times where everything works well and others where the experience is as crisp as a soup sandwich. I clearly ordered a starter and stated I wanted the two entrées to arrive after that. The starter (crispy pork belly) and an entrée seafood pan fried noodles (entrée 1) were brought together. A little irritating but for the price point not end of the world, even though we purposefully pair these two entrées together for their contrast of heat to balance out the course. We finish the pork belly and seafood pan fried noodles and wait. Then we have to followup and ask where is our second entrée (stir fried chili beef). It had clearly been waiting in the kitchen. It was barely warm. PLUS there was NOTHING hot about the stir-fried chili beef. Something was clearly janky in the kitchen because we have had this dish before at this restaurant and liked it for the spice. My toothpaste had more spice than the dish we were served. The restaurant was not busy and was staffed well. I could see both in the kitchen and saw plenty of front of the house staff, so I can't give a pass for that. My recommendation is stay away for a while and HOPE things get sorted. If you do go, we had a starter, two etnrées, two white rice, a glass of wine, and a beer. Total price with 15% tip was $116. Went here around 1145am on a Friday afternoon, and there were a whole bunch of Latino workers eating or picking up food; which to me, is an indication of good and tasty value - which is certainly is! I found this place after I had a craving for simple, tasty, not-panda-express noodles - and this place delivered. Had the chicken lo mein, and it was cooked wok-fresh.
