I stopped by one of my favorite lunch spots in Del Ray on 11/5, Tsim Young. Nothing fancy, just good Chinese takeout -fast. The staff is polite and efficient. My go to meals are the lunch specials which come with your choice of rice and a crispy spring roll. My usual choices are shrimp and broccoli, chicken wings and shrimp fried rice or the fish and cheese sub with fries. Oh! Since moving into the area, I have walked by Tsim Yung over a hundred times. I always say "I have to go in and order something". Finally, I did. I like Americanized Chinese food. It's fast, easy to order, and the food is tasty. What drives me crazy about this place; is its appearance. This is a family-owned business and the inside looks like it has not been clean in some time. Signage dirty. Pictures of food are yellow and old. Furniture from a street corner. You get the idea. A few hundred dollars of paint, picture frames, small tables and chairs, light fixtures, and some cleaning in the front area; will make this restaurant more appealing. Ownership should take some pride in their place of business. I never see a crowd or more than two people inside. I ordered two egg rolls with hot sauce. It was tasty, hot, and cheap. That is it. So had to give them a low score for first and unfortunately last order I will get from them due to the lack of flavor on an item from yesterday lunch here at work. So me and my co-worker wanted some Chinese food for lunch and after searching through the many places in this area we decided on Ysim Yung to give them a try. So I ordered fired chicken wings, shrimp egg roll, mamba sauce and fried rice. I added on the notes to make the fried rice spicy shrimp fried rice knowing it would cost an additional amount which I was fine with paying. So when the food got here I noticed that I just got plain rice. And when I say plain...I mean plain! No veggies or anything just a little bit of onions and one bean sprout. So as you can see they did not even read the notes to accommodate what I wanted. The shrimp roll was good as well as the chicken wings weee cooked well. So I will not be ordering from here again...because plain rice usually is at least veggie and not reading the notes that you have to add additional comments is a no go for me. Been here many times, won't be going back. -Previous dinner orders of General Tso's chicken is full of breading it's arguably 75% breading just terrible. -So much rice for lunch now they are purposely pushing the rice outside the two small cups in the styrofoam to take up more space in the entrees area it was the same in all three of our lunch orders. -Beef and chicken lunches had maybe 3 ounces of actual meat. -Sauces all lack flavor they are a just sweet, watered down soy sauce mess. -Spring rolls are wrapped so many times to limit the filing to have to really bite down with gusto and sort of naw your way through it, they are not crisp and delicate with nice filling as they should be. Just sad about this place, really thought I found a decent Chinese restaurant that cared about quality, and cost engineering their food, wasn't crazy expensive, alas I was wrong. read more

Arrived to DCA on a flight from Vegas so when we landed we were starving. I wanted some wonton soup so I looked up a good spot thanks to yelp in close range. We stopped in and ordered wonton soup. 3 wings, chicken lo mein and a spring spring roll. Everything was so good! We ordered dinner for takeout on their online website. We got the crab rangoon, general tso shrimp and beef chow fun. Crab rangoon was good.. the general tso shrimp was extremely over sugared. For a dish that is supposed to be spicy, this was not spicy at all. It was like eating candy shrimp. Online ordering was easy but our notes/comments were ignored. For example: we asked to make a normally spicy dish, extra spicy, but it came out non-spicy. Beef chow fun was decent and had snow peas which is always a nice addition to the dish. Meh. Big, fat Meh. We just moved to the area and wanted to try the local Chinese takeout. It's not that it was bad food, exactly - it tasted okay for the most part. But it was bad Chinese food. General Tso's chicken had absolutely no heat; it was sweet as candy. Pan fried dumplings were overcooked and chewy. Spring rolls were good, but my wife's hunan vegetables were bland. The vegetables are fresh and cooked perfectly. Highly recommend the Chicken and broccoli, or the shrimp and broccoli as the oyster sauce is very well done. Trash. Can't emphasize this enough. The food is fried with OLD OIL. This is the type of place that fries all kinds of dishes for way too long in the same batch of oil. It's important to adjust one's rating scale to the sort of place in question. Whenever I'm evaluating generic Chinese deliver/takeout places I adjust downward quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love those places. But when I see a lucky cat statue and the same faded back-lit pictures of food on the menu board overhead, I know what level of food to expect. This place disappointed even those significantly lowered standards. Egg rolls were dry, overcooked, and tough. Only ate one bite. Kung pao chicken was bland even though I asked for extra spicy, and the meat itself had an odd slimy texture - not crispy or tasty at all. I couldn't imagine anything being more bland until I tasted my wife's order of cashew chicken. Just not a good experience at all. Would not repeat, will not recommend. I've tried several other options in the area, and while they're not all great, they're all better than this place. Don't bother. read more

Tsim Yung is a good go-to Chinese restaurant in the Del Ray area. Since moving to the area, my husband and I were looking for a quick and simple Chinese restaurant for dinners. Once we found this place and it being walking distance from where we live we knew we found our spot. Overall, the menu is large and has a lot of different options for both meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Probably have been here about eight times and tend to go towards the Kung pow chicken or the chicken lo mein. Both options are very tasty and warm up nicely for leftovers. Speaking of leftovers, you get a ton of food. They really pack a lot of food in your bag and even will throw in an appetizer after you hit a certain price point with your order. If you plan on eating there, there is about three tables total and not the best dine in experience. It's certainly not the fanciest of places but it gets the job done when you're hungry. Hands down the worst Chinese food I've had in the area. Everything that arrive was somehow sweet (sweet fried wontons? How?!) and if it wasn't sweet it was bland to the point of inedibleness. Wonton soup was basically dough balls in hot water. General tsos was overly sweet. Sichuan wontons, usually a spicy dish with soft wontons, was made with fried wontons, the same sweet ones from before, and drowned in a thick, sugary syrup. Egg roll was mostly wrapper, the crab rangoon was pure cream cheese. At least pretend to flavor it, please. Finally giving my fam over at Tsim Yung the credit where it's due. I've been ordering take out from this hole-in-the-wall fine institution for years. I grew up eating this take out and now as a young adult it's still my go to in the Xanj. (Not that I've really expanded my horizons elsewhere in the Chinese food take-out realm in the area) BUT I will always vouch for Tsim Yung- umpteen years strong and never had a problem. The lo mein is amazing. Pro tip- order the vegetable lo mein and get the chicken skewers appetizer and add that to your lo mein. The sweet and sour chicken is fried fluffy goodness and I love the sauce smothered on top or as a side to dip stuff into. Their beef broccoli is good. The wanton soup always hits the spot. And I really like their egg rolls! Is this place fancy? Nope. Does it kind of look like criminals are lurking inside sometimes? Potentially. But this is my Chinese takeout and I love them despite their lack of aesthetic pleasure. In and out baby, go home, and enjoy the fried rice. read more

This place is our neighborhood Chinese takeaway destination of choice. They serve up excellent steamed dumplings with incredible dipping sauce, load nice crunchy veggies in the dishes, and will spice your food up Asian style if you ask nicely. We particularly enjoy their orange beef (wonderfully tender), pork fried rice (nicely flavored and loaded with meaty roast pork) and moo shu pork. Beware the lo mein noodle dishes, though: I think they fry and pile the noodles in the bottom of the metal container and then pour the remaining ingredients on top, resulting in a gummy, crunchy, slimy dish. Yuck! The prices are incredibly low for this area and the delivery is prompt. The people who take your order over the phone can be a bit difficult to understand at first, but they are warm and sweet, and will start filling your delivery bags with extra goodies once you're a regular customer. Very happy with order. Reasonably priced. Dumplings, fried rice, and General Tso's for $20 or so. The fried rice was interesting different -- in a good way! It clearly was not brown rice, but also was not saturated with soy sauce in a manner that results in dark rice. It was white with a light fry color, but very flavorful. Additionally, it seems like most Chinese places just throw some (frozen) cubed carrots and peas in with the rice. Tsim Yung had bean sprouts in there, which was a pleasant surprise. Some other reviews slammed the General Tso's. Maybe they had a bad order, because mine was very tasty, with a predictably moderate amount of heat -- mild, but enough flavor to call it heat.
