The big Chief and the Chef
Bernard M.

You never know where life takes you. Especially when hungry. Choices. Sometimes you aren't offered many palatable choices. Imagine you're in upstate New York. Traveling down I-88. You see this small town called Schenevus. On Main Street. Because in this small town, what else would the main drag be called? How many choices would you think you would have in such a small town? Well step inside the Chief Schenevus Restaurant and be surprised. Sandwiches. Baked Goods. Ice Cream. Even pizza. We had a variety of food - Rubens, quesadillas and wraps. All amazingly delicious and plentiful. So we took our leftovers - and two boxes of baked pastries and a cake - on the road. To see the fall foliage turn red, yellow and orange before our eyes. Service was terrific. And so was the whole experience. And where should we turn next? Life is full of pleasant surprises. Like this American flag flying delight in a small town. If you are in this neck of the colorful forests, I recommend you choose the Chief Schenevus.

This is a home style, comfort food, small restaurant in the town of Scheneves named after an Indian chief .The front and back of the menu display information about the Indian chief , his daughter and legends of their life . Everything is homemade, many dishes cooked to order . Pastries, pies, cakes, breads are attractively displayed. The menu is not fancy and features homemade soups, chili, salads, breakfast and lunch dishes, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, etc. I opted for the chili and was told it was mild and if I prefer more heat the chef would add more spice to the recipe when served. I enjoyed my chili ,topped it with onions and cheese which cost a bit extra with sour cream on the side . It was most delicious . My dining made ordered the California Reuben a sandwich of turkey swiss cheese , sauerkraut on Kimmel rye He said it was very tasty. His came with a side, many choices but he ordered the potatoe salad which was very creamy and tasty. Portions were good, food plated nicely. Hot food came out hot . Prices very reasonable. The restaurant was filled with customers, and was clean and neat. The restaurant is closed mid December to mid March and normally closed on Tuesdays. We think a great little find on our way to Albany.

Pastrami Reuben & sweet potato fries!!

The food was pretty good, but the service was really slow. Also, I had to wait 10-1t min for a coffee refill.

Been coming here since I was a little girl. The best breakfast, so fresh and reasonably priced. Friendly staff and great service.

Great pastries, awesome crepes, friendly service, pleasant interior and deck…read more For better or worse, I don't often get down to Norwich before 3pm, when La Maison Blanche closes, but when I do, I try to get in here. The savory crepes are awesome, standing head and shoulders above the other crepes I've had in the area. As far as I know the rest of the menu is similarly great (according to my sweetie), but I always get crepes. I prefer the salmon crepe to the egg and bacon crepe, but that might just be me. You just walk in and order at the counter, and then grab a table in one of the rooms in what appears to be an old farmhouse. The deck looks great, but I've yet to get there on a day where it works for me. The tables are all different, old wood, in comfy rooms with large windows and simple decoration. This isn't fine dining, but it's not expensive, either. Service is pretty quick, although not instant. And the staff is pretty cheerful and friendly. On your way out, buy a pastry from the case -- they are awesome. I'm not sure whether they're made on site or at their companion store in NYC, but they rock.

We LOVE this place! Their croissants are the REAL DEAL and delicious! I love their French Onion…read moresoup, which is also the "real deal". They offer various sandwiches, paninis and omelettes, and of course their desserts, cakes and cookies are excellent. We like to sit in the sunlit back room to eat our lunch. Check them out - you won't be disappointed!

Shandaken Bake - Yes please. Super cute bakery in town.

Wow, just wow. Run, don't walk to Shandaken Bake. This is a very special place. It's a one man…read moreshop. The owner, Craig, bakes everything fresh and he really knows what he's doing. Everything we tried was so phenomenal that we came and waited in line for 20+ minutes the following day. He even remembered us! It's a small shop but they have a few tables so if you can get a table, it'd be a comfortable place to sit and enjoy. Cream biscuit- simple and perfect. We were all fighting over this one. If you ask he'll give you jam and butter too. Chive and cheddar biscuit- deliciously cheesy and a real winner. Chubby squirrel- if you like fruit filled coffee cake, you'll be a fan of this one! It wasn't my favorite. Banana crumble cake- this was a definite favorite! The cake wasn't too sweet and the crumb added a nice sweetness. Apple tart- this was well received by our group! I liked it. All in all, this bakery is amazing! I wish I could eat the banana crumble cake for breakfast every morning.

I love me a good local bakery, and Shandaken did not disappoint!…read more We were in town for a wedding and this little small business was recommended to us. The owner/baker is a one-man show and he is so so nice and friendly! The clothbound cheddar & chive biscuit was divine, it was flakey and buttery and the perfect amount of cheesy. I came back the next day for a second one! The roasted butternut crumble muffin had all the cozy fall flavors, not too sweet. Not a ton of drink options here, but just the basics, brewed hot coffee and a hot tea. Arrive early, as items can sell out, but you can't go wrong with anything he has available!
