I had a chance to order the cheese fries and a lamb gyro platter. The fries was great and extra cheesy. The platter I believe needs some improvement. 1) Size - this is a plus. I had a platter to go and it was a great amount of food per platter. Loved it. 2) Rice - it is a little bit dry and strong of a taste. 3) Protein - the amount of lamb you get per platter is pretty small. It's mostly rice and veggies. It would be great to have a little bit more of lamb. I would rate the platter 7 out of 10. Thank you for reading this and I hope you find this helpful.

Local Smoke BBQ - Cookstown…read more The BEAST takes on Local Smoke BBQ! Here's the problem--I'm not really a BBQ guy, but this place left me seriously conflicted. Instead of going with the traditional BBQ, I went Southern and ordered the fried catfish po'boy with collard greens, and I have to admit...the food was pretty damn good. The catfish was crispy, flavorful, and worked perfectly on the sandwich. The collard greens were solid, and the cornbread tasted great, although it was a little on the dry side. I was also looking forward to some Southern-style iced tea, but unfortunately they were out. The other knock for me was the setup. You order as soon as you walk in rather than having traditional table service, which takes a little away from the restaurant experience. Overall, the actual food surprised me--in a good way. A few little dings kept the score down, but I'd definitely eat that catfish po'boy again. The BEAST gives Local Smoke BBQ 3/5. Not bad at all for a BBQ joint reviewed by a guy who doesn't even like BBQ.

If we were being honest, we would call this location Lawrence Township, but honesty is not always the first ingredient in branding. Location, location, location, even for burgers. Getting there by car is an adventure best left to those with a flexible relationship to risk. The turn off Route 1 feels like a wager against fate, and the alternate path through the outer rings of Mercer Mall suggests a quiet exile. Fortunately, the Shake Shack app exists, sparing one from both traffic patterns and insurance claims. This is how I most recently enjoyed my meal, delivered neatly to my workplace for a coworker's birthday lunch, which felt appropriately celebratory. I usually order the Shack Stack, a dependable monument to excess where a burger and a breaded portobello mushroom coexist in harmony. This time, I strayed. I chose the "limited time" K-Shack Fried Chicken Sandwich, which arrived with promises of a spicy sweet sesame gochujang glaze, scallions, and kimchi slaw. The blueprint was sound. In execution, the flavors spoke in a whisper when they should have sung. The kimchi and the sauce both seemed to hold something back, as if saving themselves for another sandwich. I'm sure some focus group told them they liked it spicy, but just corporate spicy. Many people treat Shake Shack as the summit of elevated fast food. I remain a respectful observer rather than a true believer. Still, the food is consistently good, reliably satisfying, and, if you can avoid the drive, all the better. Four stars, because reliability is a virtue, even when geography is a nightmare.

Located between the NJ Turnpike (I-95) and I-295 near Bordentown, Iron Skillet is housed in the…read morePetco Truck Stop main building, occupying about half the structure. While not a regular at such cultural phenomena, I have visited enough of them over years of long car trips to appreciate what they offer. Plenty of gas pumps, restrooms, showers for truckers, convenience stores, and diner style grub that is usually carb laden and caffeinated. Sometimes, that menu is exactly what I want. Iron Skillet has a very good Chicken Fried Steak (w white gravy, hash browns, two eggs and toast/biscuits/pancakes). It is way more than I can eat, and I get the gravy on the side so I can avoid most of it, and know I won't finish the potatoes nor the rye toast, but placing the over-easy eggs on top of the breaded steak and eating them together is a very satisfying breakfast. The coffee is strong, and my request for milk resulted in a large glass of cow juice alongside the brown mug and backup carafe with two more refills to pour when wanted. Clearly designed for bigger appetites to sustain long haul drivers, I don't mind taking home what I can't consume. Service was friendly and efficient. They work in teams, as at least three people checked in with me and helped deliver my food. I also liked the floor design like many Waffle Houses with undulating counters that allowed the servers to approach all customers quickly and provide more "surface area," close to the kitchen. It wasn't crowded at 10 a.m., and very clean. Iron Skillet scratched my CFS itch for at least the next six months, and I appreciate the rest of its iconic approach to classic road stops. Definitely a worthy change of pace.

We had never been to Killarney's before, so we decided to give it a try for dinner last evening…read more When we arrived, the staff seemed friendly, and we were looking forward to having a nice evening. Unfortunately, that wasn't how things turned out. It took our waitress at least 10-15 minutes to come to our table to see if we wanted drinks. When she did arrive, she was very nice. I ordered a Moscato, and my husband ordered a Michelob Ultra. Since we had already had plenty of time to look over the menu, we placed our dinner order at the same time. A few minutes later, our waitress returned to tell me that they were out of Moscato. I have to admit, I found that pretty surprising. This was a Saturday evening, and I would expect a restaurant and bar to be well stocked heading into a busy weekend night. My husband had also ordered soup before his meal. Interestingly enough, his soup arrived before his beer did. I'm still not quite sure how a bowl of soup made it to the table faster than a draft beer. When our entrées finally arrived, neither of us was particularly impressed. The food wasn't terrible, but it was average at best and certainly didn't make up for the rest of the experience. We finished our meals, paid our bill, and left. Between the slow service, the bar not being properly stocked, the unusual delay in getting a simple drink, and food that was nothing more than average, there simply wasn't anything about our experience that would give us a reason to return. Unfortunately, Killarney's will not be a place we revisit.
