Chicken Shop has been one of those rare experiences where my low expectations were disconfirmed. I have to say that I'm always wary of popular hangouts, such as Bone Daddies, Tasty Burger and Tram Shed. The latter, for example, did in my opinion not live up to the hype that they'd generated. (Good PR, but no substance really.) Chicken Shop was another place where I'd heard so much about and so I finally had to give it a try. It was a Thursday evening and we were quite early and so ended up getting a seat right away. (20 minutes later, there had already formed a substantial queue.) It was just the two of us and we chose to be seated at the bar. In fact, this is what I'd recommend to everyone, as you can watch how the chicken get grilled, chopped up and sent off to their respective "owners". What really convinced me of this place is the chicken, which was perfectly marinated, juicy, charred to perfection...and the sides and condiments that came along with it, were complementing it nicely. I have to say, it's not cheap, as you order the chicken and the sides separately, but then again the taste is worth it. I also really liked the decor and I felt super comfortable. Somebody had really thought about how to turn a dark basement into a livable and exciting space. (It's definitely part of the hipster family, but that's alright ;-) On top of that, I thought our waitress was just too sweet and so my overall experience was very positive. I can, however, see that this might not be the perfect place to hang out with a large group. It gets really crowded and so the staff might be quite keen to get you in and out of the establishment as soon as possible. My recommendation: go to the Southampton Arms about 300 yards away. It's a very cozy pub. Tip: If you live nearby, order the chicken to take-away and enjoy it from the comfort of your sofa! Beware to not drip the juices on the fabric though ;-) read more

Whoever said chicken is boring never ate here. I had three types one fine evening and so glad I did. Succulent rotisserie chicken is their specialty and it's so tender it will fall off the bone. Packed with flavour. Fried chicken sandwich was not the healthiest but very tasty. Lastly I had to try the chicken wings, sweet not hot. Juicy perfection! They have all the standard sides. We had the corn on the cob, which was good but needed some butter and salt. Fries were ok but crinkle cut is my least favorite. The star is chicken and it shines! Casual ambiance, and gets crowded during the dinner rush. Takeaway is a popular option as they were flying bags out the door. Sit at the counter if you want a view of the kitchen and all the roasted goodness. A trendy, hip spot that won't break the bank for a delicious meal. read more

Those of you eagle eyed readers of my reviews will note that my Yelp secret is that I like KFC. I've even made a special trip to Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc restaurant in Napa Valley specially for fried chicken night in my quest to find the best chicken ever Hence, my excitement at the recent plethora of chicken places opening up in London to offer choice amongst Nando's and cheap KFC wannabe fried chicken shops At Yelp Ramen Club 6.0, Andrew M, Rob H and I concocted an excuse to visit Chicken Shop in Kentish Town - the fact that we like eating chicken! Andrew M kindly set up the UYE and yesterday, a group of 12 hungry Yelpers and friends descended (literally) on the Chicken Shop for lunch As noted in previous reviews, it's the most obvious signposted restaurant, an irritating trend I've noticed with new London restaurants. Anyway, there's a discreet sign on a flowerpot and yesterday, they had a Chicken Shop bag tied to the door handle. In case, you're still struggling, they're located under Pizza East or you can just follow the smell of roasting chicken like Andrew did yesterday! You then descend into the basement where you'll find a roomful of patrons tucking into spit roasted chicken. The simple menu is available on the menus on the walls to peruse and salivate over if you're waiting for a table The open plan kitchen allows you to see the whole chickens being spit roasted though the smell wasn't as strong as I expected in the restaurant - perhaps they're pumping it outside to attract more customers! Seating is available at the kitchen counter or tables Ordering is easy - you decide whether you want a quarter, a half or a whole chicken. 4 sides are available - chips, corn on the cob, coleslaw and salad of buttered lettuce and avocado. Hot sauce and smokey sauce are available on the table Eating in a group enabled us to order everything - yay! The chicken arrived commendably quickly but when you serve 400 covers in not the largest space, turnover is important. The spit roasted chicken comes in a tin plate with a wedge of lemon to squeeze over it. So, where does it fit in the pantheon of great chicken? The chicken is definitely juicy but the marinade flavour doesn't really penetrate that far from the skin into the meat My favourite side was the corn on the cob. My least favourite were the chips which weren't that interesting. The coleslaw wasn't drowned in maynnaise which was good My favourite part of the meal was in fact dessert. Once again, we were able to share the 3 desserts on offer. There was a very deep filled apple pie, which was served out of the pie dish at the table with the waitress. The lemon cheesecake was lovely and light but zingy. The chocolate brownie was velvety and chocolatey. They all came with ice cream and cream - when you're offered ice cream, cream or both as an accompaniment, there can only be one answer! This was a great way to spend a Sunday lunchtime - with Yelp friends sharing good food. However, as this place is called the Chicken Shop and I can only give the chicken 4 stars out of 5, it has to be an overall 4 star rating read more

Posh Nandos!? Posh Nandos with happy, friendly staff that let you wander off to the pub and call you when your table is ready? Fantastic! Things I loved here: * The smell of the spit-roasting chickens that you greet you as you come down the stairs. If you weren't already hungry, this smell will make you crave chicken!! * We sat on the huge table watching the chefs - I loved watching the chickens go round and around as they roasted. * The simple menu - just choose a chicken size (whole, half or a quarter) and a couple of side dishes. * The way they pour wine into mini carafes or jugs before bringing it to your table. * The cooorn! Oh my goodness the sweet corn is so good! If you order one portion, they give you three pieces, then pour buttery sauce all over them. When I go back I would consider munching my way through all three myself as it was hard to stop after one and a half!! Be careful: * There were two choices of sauces, hot/spicy or smoky BUT they were actually both pretty spicy. If you can't handle spicy sauces I would avoid both! The chicken here is really SO DELICIOUS. Whatever that seasoning is they are putting on it, it works. Sides are less interesting, crinkle cut fries look like underdone McCains, for example. I was pretty full by dessert time but I remember other people being excited by the various options. Service was friendly and generally efficient. I'm not a massive fan of the basement atmosphere, but it's a fun place to come with friends and I would definitely come back for MORE DELICIOUS CHICKEN. read more

This is an amazing place! We went there since we've heard they were serving apple pie.... And what a lovely little joint! It's not that easy so see from the street and it's located in the basement. There atmosphere and surroundings is brilliant it's got a kindda ranch vibe with dark furnitures and plates/mugs are old-fashioned tin. We've ordered the apple pie and the waiter came with a huge pie and a large spoon and filled our plates and then we received half a pint of cream. The pie was soooo good! I had a cup of hot chocolate and it was the best I've had during my stay in London (and I've had a few!). Staff was welcoming, attentive and very polite. Unfortunately we learned about this place after lunch and just before going home - we would have loved to eat a meal here. They only serve chicken and it looked mouthwatering good and the smell was tempting. I highly recommend this place! read more

Just to left of Pizza East is an unexpected, very cool basement space they call Chicken Shop. Totally open plan with bar seating at the same level as the kitchen work tops and the rotisserie machines at the back. Medium-sized place with a great dark, warm, slightly American-hut vibe. Food-wise, it's a short concise menu. We went for hot chicken wings which came with the most insane light blue cheese/brie dip. I loved it so much, I ordered extra dip! The wings were delicious and hot, but perfect with the cool dip. Then we shared half a rotisserie chicken which comes cut into small pieces and in a light BBQ marinade. Chicken was well-cooked with the dark meat falling off the bone meaning the white meat was over done for me. But I know you can't have it both ways. We also tried the pulled chicken sandwich which was a good portion of shredded chicken in BBQ sauce with lettuce and coleslaw which went down very well. We shared a portion of chips which were searing hot and yummy. One portion is big but just short for 2, but 2 portions would be too much....go with your gut! I'm a sucker for condiments and this sensible place provides ketchup, a light mustard mayo and their own bottles of hot sauce and smokey BBQ sauce without asking it. Drinks-wise, I tried both the fresh orange soda which was good and the fresh lemonade which was excellent, unexpectedly fizzy and I liked it. I was told the coffee was good too. Finished the meal with a chocolate brownie with ice-cream. Unnecessary as I was full but it's one of those things, when your whole meal was great and well-conceived, you know there's a great brownie on the portfolio. Coco-co coco-co coco-co! Cha-chee cha-chee cha-chee! A-coodle doodle-doo! Coocoo-ca-cha! Somewhat counter-intuitively, Chicken Shop is a shop which sells chicken. Once upon a time, it would've been easy to just pass by; however, Giles Coren put paid to that and the place has now become NW5's worst-kept secret with the place being totally manic during late Sunday lunch. If I had to pick two things that I absolutely love about France, they would be i) bakeries, ii) chickens roasting on spits. Whilst, unfortunately, Chicken Shop doesn't fulfill the first of these (-1 star), the view of spinning chicken in full view in the open-plan kitchen at the back of the restaurant set me into a breathless fit of happiness, earning me some funny looks from nearby diners. So the premise is simple - a quarter, half, or whole happy chicken with a small selection of sides - corn, chips, coleslaw, et al. Yeah, it borrows a lot from Nando's but - unlike the restaurant Pando's (formerly situated in Mile End I believe) - it takes the concept to another level and makes it its own. The chicken itself is of excellent quality (and happy!) and, whilst they don't have the selection of sauces that Nando's have - I really enjoyed the hot sauce. The sides were really good, especially the corn which comes with a gravy boat of molten butter. Nothing wrong can come of that. As we all know, chicken has been known through the centuries as l'oiseau d'entremets as it stokes our cravings for dessert. Chicken Shop offers a simple selection in this department - a lemon cheesecake, a chocolate brownie, and a slice of warm apple pie. I'll admit, I wouldn't usually go for any of these, but our friendly waiter wouldn't let us leave unless we tried all of them (ok, not actually - service was impeccable throughout, despite the restaurant's high throughput), and so we relented. We didn't regret it one bit - all of them were absolutely fantastic. I fell in love when an entire apple pie was brought out by a waiter with a cake slice. He asked us how much. I melted inside like Viennetta in a just-dishwashered bowl. People will say 'well, why not just go to Nando's? They offer more, and it's cheaper!' However, Chicken Shop is worth every penny extra - so much so that I bought one of their reusable Hessian bags. Chicken Shop is simply fantastic, the perfect counterpoint to the army of [insert US state or food-related adjective here] Fried Chicken shops that may be found in every corner of the city. Downstairs from the new branch of Pizza East on Highgate Road, a slightly unexpected location. There's no sign or name, just look for the stairs down on the left. Inside it's quite dark and an agreeable charcoal / barbecuey aroma in the low ceiling room which has been carefully crafted. A combination of a down home pit stop in some mythical place in good ole' USA that's been untouched for 50 years, part cosy den. We arrived at 7 but there was already a 20 minute wait but the host proposed that she would give us a call when the table was ready so we headed across the road for a quick half. 15 minutes later we were at our table. Chicken is whole, half or quarter. I opted for a quarter (£4) and had two sides (£3 each). It came quickly in a metal enamel bowl. Simply served and in several large pieces (was that really a 1/4 chicken?) with big wedge of lemon to squeeze over. A good bowlful of crisp crinkle chips and similar generous portion of simple, good coleslaw on the side. The chicken was excellent as were the sides. Tender and crispy skin. Even better with some of the smokey table sauce poured over. The chicken nudges ahead of the one I tried at Tramshed recently (another new chicken / simple menu place). Determined to hold out for desert, I opted for the deep dish apple pie served with cream or ice cream, £4, (ice cream please). Another white enamel bowl appeared with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. A few minutes later the waiter appeared with a huge, whole apple pie and then served up a massive wedge of it into my bowl, asking if it was enough.. 'That's plenty. thanks!' The apple pie was great, not too sweet but a bit heavy on lemon zest flavour. Soft cakey texture pastry which was good. I didn't detect any cinnamon flavour at all that the previous reviewer noted. Maybe the recipe varies depending on who makes it? Very positive experience and can't fault it. Clearly the place is already very popular and deservedly so. The concept is good and it's very well executed. Simple and just great AND generous portions AND great value for money plus great and prompt service without being pushy. Too often Americana concept restaurants have a good idea but fall down on execution of food, mean servings and high prices. Chicken seems the newest food fad to hit London. Not that I'm complaining, I love me some chicken and there is only so much Nando's you can eat. With that in mind, it was time to try Chicken Shop and a group of Yelpers and I met up one slightly hungover Sunday. Unfortunately, Chicken Shop also follows that other London trend of no reservations so you just have to show up and hope for the best. For large groups (we had about 10), it's next to impossible to get a table so we had to split up. Not a huge problem but something to keep in mind. Luckily, my group was of the sharing mind and up for trying everything. Naturally, you start with the chicken which comes in three sizes: quarter, half, and whole. As I learned from YGO, if you for the quarter you can opt for either a breast or leg but be sure to tell them. If you don't, they'll give you the first piece ready which is invariably a leg. Tastier meat, but much less of it and the sauces on offer can provide all the flavour you want. Next, pick your style: hot or smokey. I figure you can work out what each is like. The hot isn't that spicy though (think medium on the Nando's scale) so nothing to be worried about. They also have hot and smokey sauces on the table for you to douse your meat. Sides are likewise limited in number to crinkle cut fries, corn on the cob, coleslaw, and lettuce and avocado salad. The salad was meh, the fries alright but nothing special, and the corn on the cob deliciously charred. The coleslaw was the standout with a light vinegary bite and crunchy veggies. My usual gripe with slaw is that there is too much mayo/oiliness but this was light and refreshing - definite slaw win! You can get a range of drinks from sodas, beer, wine, and even some harder stuff. Given we were all hungover, it was soda and water all around. Finally dessert which is stored along the wall in hidden mini-closets. The lemon cheesecake was suitably light and creamy with a delicate lemony flavour. The apple pie was tasty if you like such things (I prefer fruit for starters and not in my dessert) but heavy on the cinnamon. I will note that they bring a full pie to your table and you get to pick exactly how big a slice you want. Or maybe the waitress just really liked us after Yee Gan used his Polish to flirt his way into her good graces. My favourite, however, was always going be the warm chocolate brownie which was rich and decadent and made no pretence at all in being healthy. That's what I look for in a dessert! Overall, a good meal and pretty decent value at around 15 squids per person. However, the far removed location is kinda a killjoy so when push comes to shove I'll still go to Nando's for my fix. read more

So, I am going to totally rip this SUPER hipster Shoreditch-meets-New-York-wannabe, 'rustic' basement (semi)hideout... and then shamefully raise both hands and admit my complete subscription to pretentious-(north London)middle-class-epicurism. There, did it. Right, if you are a restaurant and you only serve one thing, well that thing has got the be the sh*t right, the absolute dogs' bollo*ks, and I reckon Chicken Shop have got chicken down, well, pretty good. Chicken comes by the whole, half or quarter (but let's get real, even K-Town residents aren't truly local to this trek up Highgate road, who the hell wants a measly quarter?!). Sides are simple. Red cabbage 'slaw, corn-on-da-cob (smothered in clarified butter and coriander, bien sur), butter lettuce salad and chunky crinkle-cut fries (bit better than Birds-Eye, ya). Get them all, or you'll be left wondering. [How often do you get to boast about eating the entire menu anyway?]. Wine, beer or a double shot. Don't think otherwise. Ok, there's an Orange Jiggle if you're driving. Get there early (queuing up the stairs, through the doorway and out onto the street reveals the *clandestine* location, don't be so uncool). "And the reviews for this place are really good," said the young lady in the queue for tables. Deservedly so, because Chicken Shop is an all-round top-notch experience. Funnily enough, it's not the chicken that secures it 5 star status from me, even if it is the daddy of chicken places: juicy, well-cooked meat that comes in quarters, halves or whole chickens. As I made my way through my dinner of half a chicken, colesaw (home-made, no mayo - yum), corn on the cob (doused in garlic butter - tasty) and half a tub of chips, I thought that my 5 star recollections of a trip here 12 months previous may have been off the mark. Surely 4 stars was more apt. But then we opted for pudding: the 'deep-filled appled pie'. And 5 star glory was re-attained. Quite simply it's the best apple pie I've had in a long time, possibly ever. Sweeter than usual, and rounded off with a scoop of ice cream. I also love the no-nonsense way it was served too - no carefully presented slice, rather a messy quarter of a pie in its pie dish, pushed rather hastily on to our table. Just fantastic. The service was quick, friendly and helpful, regularly topping up our glasses with water. They don't formally take bookings, but were happy to put us on a 'waiting list' when we inquired three hours in advance. It's still good value (£4 per quarter of chicken, about the same for sides, £5 for desserts and a very reasonable £2.30 for half a pint of Camden lager and £4.50 for a pint) and the interior has a pleasingly retro if still rather polished air. read more

Seems like half of Yelp have already eaten here... where have I been? Oh right, yeah, I remember. It's no secret that I love chicken, it is a bit bizarre since I never used to touch it but now eat it about twice a day. The Chicken Shop had been on my radar for a while, I'd heard it was underground and hidden. I expected some kind of chicken shack, but no, it's actually very lovely and hipstery. A hessian bag marks the entrance. Hidden, you see. We easily got a table, my pro-tip on these 'popular' places, go on a Tuesday, no-one eats out on a Tuesday. Right at the bar, we could watch the chicken chopping action. The menu is simple. I ordered a half chicken, fries and avocado salad. I basically had no idea how big half a chicken was. My highlights were the amazing dressing on the avocado salad, the super-crispy fries and homemade mayo. With the chicken, it was tasty but overall I was not a big fan. Why? Because I found it way too pink, with actual spots of blood in places. I just can't deal with this, too much of a paranoid chicken eater. I would've loved it had it been thoroughly cooked. The skin is crispy and delicious and the house sauces are fantastic. read more

Go to Chicken Shop - it is simple and tasty at a reasonable price, what more could you ask for? The menu is very limited and if that's the way you choose to go everything on there better work - and for the most part it did. We arrived earlyish (630) to guarantee a seat and this proved to be a good move as it was packed about 20 minutes later - another one of those annoyingly contemporary establishments where you cannot book a table. Nice space though - very cosy and welcoming ( assuming you don't have to stand in the corner waiting I suspect) My half of chicken was deliciously tender from the rotisserie and nicely seasoned and the two available sauces (smoky or hot) were delicious accompaniments. We also got the crinkle cut fries (which did require some seasoning) and the butter lettuce and avocado salad - the fries came with a really good mayo which I think was made using a really good quality extra virgin olive or rapeseed oil judging from the flavour, it went well with the chips and even better when combined with the table sauces - perfect. Salad was fine, nothing special. Dessert on the other hand - save some room! I had a huge slab of apple pie which as others have pointed out is cut from the dish in front of you to your liking - very moreish. The lemon cheesecake was nicely flavoured and not cloyingly sweet like the more disappointing species of cheesecake. I had a pint of Moretti to drink - nothing out of the ordinary. Can't believe it's taken me this long to visit. I've been an off and on again visitor of Dirty Burger for years. Situated up Highgate Road, a short walk from Kentish Town station, you'd easily miss it. Head to Pizza East and then look at the door on the left, it will be slightly ajar, and might have a Chicken Shop bag holding it open, on our occasion it didn't. Confidently walk through the door and down the stairs as the basement has a full restaurant. There's one item on the menu, chicken, all you get to choose is how much of it you want, quarter, half or whole, along with side dishes. I can't remember what they all are but we went for the corn and sweet potato fries. The chicken was moist and tender, not too spicy and tasted great. Sides were similarly good, unfortunately with a lot of studying going on, we only went for half pints of local Camden Hells Lager. For dessert we opted to share a slice of apple pie and were treated to an unexpected surprise. The pies are baked in large pie dishes and served at the table, our server had gone to get the pie and found that what was left would be considered too big for one slice and too little for 2. As he knew the two of us were sharing, he declined to dish it, but instead dolloped ice cream into the dish and served it as is! Flaky pastry and wonderfully spiced apples led to a fantastic end to the meal. If you like Nando's, this is better! Run, don't walk here. read more

Okay so, I'm torn. Why am I torn? Because the chicken wasn't my favorite part of the meal! I'll start with my beef on the chicken (ha!). Maybe it was mine specifically, but it definitely could have used a bit more time rotating on the rotisserie. I had a half chicken, ordered for me by the gang before I got to the restaurant, which is fine by me given it was 2pm, I'd gone for a run, and I hadn't eaten anything yet for the day! So breast and wing were cooked perfectly, but thigh and leg in particular were very difficult to detach from bone due to slight undercooked-ness. As Yee Gan mentioned, the marinade/spices on the skin of the chicken didn't penetrate beyond the skin, which is another bit of a strike. Hrm. So given the chicken was more of a 3 star in my chicken booklet, and given that this place is called "Chicken Shop" I have to go with 3 stars despite the saving graces... The saving graces, and why I'd go back to give them another shot: - The sauces are tasty. Both the hot and the smokey are delicious, and the hot will definitely make your nose run! - The cole slaw! I normally am not a fan of cole slaw, but this stuff was so good we had to ask for another order which we also finished. The corn is also delicious, as was the butter lettuce and avocado salad. - The desserts are fabulous. I wasn't a fan of the apple pie, but that is simply because I'm a cinnamon hater, so my judgment is biased. However. The lemon cheesecake was FANTASTIC. Like, I wanted another slice fantastic. The brownie was also decadent and lovely with the macadamia nuts. And you get ice cream with everything! - Service was friendly and great, constantly refilling the water, bringing us extra napkins, doling out an enormous piece of apple pie, etc. Sorry to be a bit of a dissenting voice, but I just was not enamored with the chicken! read more

If you are a fan of chicken this place is a must go to when in london. The ambience is very relaxed and the staff are always helpful. I went for my staple of sharing a whole chicken between 2 people. To order 3/4 doesn't do your tastebuds justice as you will be craving more. Chicken was perfectly cooked and finished over charcoal gives it an amazing flavour. I ventured slightly off my usual chips this time and order coleslaw and the salad. Both were amazing. Coleslaw was nice and creamy. Not too much. And the salad had a great dressing and the avocados were perfectly ripened. I have been here quite a few times and will always return but thought it was about time I finally reviewed this place. It's perfect for a relaxed date or to chill with some mates. If you are a fan of nandos I do warn you you will be disappointed every time you go in there as chicken shop smashes it to smithereens. The few times I have been there since going to chicken shop all I have thought is this isn't chicken shop. The five stars just shows my love for the place. I'd seen mixed reviews of Chicken Shop on twitter and decided it might not be worth a trek to Kentish Town especially, given that I do live next door to a Nandos. But we were up in KT for a gig at the Forum and decided this was the excuse we needed. We actually got lost trying to find the place; ending up in a car park behind the building and getting turned away by a grumbling security guard. I went against all male intuition and asked a knowledgeable looking Hipster for directions and we eventually found the subtly decorated door down into the restaurant. HINT: it's the door to the left hand side of Pizza East - it might have a Chicken Shop canvas tote dangling on the handle. We were immediately hit with the dense and warm aroma of roast chicken and spicy sauce. My eyes watered! We were quickly seated (reading other reviews suggests we were lucky at 7pm) and got down to business. No menus, just a chalkboard on the wall, which we couldn't see given it was obscured by a pillar and it's damn dark down there. No bother, the waiter explained what they had and made some recommendations. We opted for a whole chicken, which arrived cut into segments and piled high in an enamel bowl, crinkle-cut fries and some slaw. The chicken was excellent. Did you know that chickens make different sounds in different languages? (and for fans of Arrested Development, they make many different sounds, which I won't go into here). These chickens, however, are pleasantly silent. Unless you count the pleasing sizzle of crisping, roasting skin. Ok, now I sound like a creepo. Anyhow, I went to Chicken Shop with a large group of 12, some yelpers, some old friends. The service was not intimidated nor annoyed by our large party during Sunday lunch rush-- she handled our lack of organization with both grace and pep, which I really appreciated. At our table of 7 we shared 3.5 chickens, a variety of sides, and 5 desserts, like others I'll go through our order in an orderly fashion: Chicken- You can tell these are happy chickens. Meaty (they actually seem like they've lived longer), crispy, excellently seasoned skin. Yea, it is basically, as Josy said fancy (non-Portugese) Nando's, but the proof is in the chicken that it really is not. Its just better. Abandon the fork/knife/your pride: Just eat with your fingers (they provide wet towlettes). Plus the loos are really beautiful, so go take a visit and wash your hands with the nice-smelling Cowshed products and check them out... then dig in. Corn: Nice, especially with the butter sauce. Don't bother if you don't get the butter. It isn't corn like I've had in America, but about as good as I've gotten on this fair Isle. Chips: The weak point of our dining experience. This speaks more to how good everything else was than to how bad the chips were. They weren't bad they were just 'fine,' though a bit soggy. This is an area that could be improved. That said, the garlic aioli they were served with (house-made) was quite good, and I normally don't like mayonnaise at all. Lemon Cheesecake: Really light, really nice. DON'T SKIP DESSERT, they were a highlight of our meal. Brownie: With macadamia nuts, served warm, crisp top, gooey centre. REALLY GOOD, especially with the vanilla ice cream. Apple pie: Our waiter and others raved about this. I thought it was just ok. The crust was nice, but again, this is probably my American bias coming in again. It was good, but I appreciated the lemon cheesecake and brownie more. Odds and ends: I'm wavering between 4 and 5 stars. Great atmosphere/decour, great service, and really nice food. They also do takeaway service, which seems like a good idea if you live in the area. The hot sauce had kick, but I didn't find the smoky sauce spicy at all, so I liked a mix between the two. We went here on a Saturday eve and I could barely find it and when I did the door is so unassuming I thought it was closed and had to go in and ask Pizza East if Chicken Shop had shut its doors for a good. I was wrong....we opened the door, walked down the stairs and found a massive and buzzing restaurant. It feels a little fabricated--almost trying too hard to be an American restaurant and kind of has that bland we look like Pizza East feel. I must say the chicken was moist, juicy and delicious. Loved the jugs of wine. The crinkle fries were pretty good. The corn on the cob was flavorless and the lettuce and avocado salad could have used a bit more flavor. But on the whole it was really good, the restaurant had good atmosphere, and I liked sitting at the massive bar spots watching the spit roast. Might want to get there early or get a booking at busy times as word is out to eat here. read more

Chicken Shop is a trendy place to get your chicken fix, much more upscale than KFC, and the atmosphere is cooler than Nandos. Like many others, I have been to KFC and Nandos a million times, and a new variation on an old favourite is always welcome. The restaurant advertises itself with the delicious smell of chicken wafting out on the street, luring you down into a basement with a slightly dim, fun and warm atmosphere. Chickens adorn the walls and roast on spits and it seems like a family friendly ambiance. So the big question is, how's the chicken? The chicken here is definitely the juiciest and most succulent I have ever had. Each bite is a tender morsel and they really know all the secrets of keeping the moisture in. However, the flavour is just on the outside, and even with sauces, is just not that great a flavour. As much as I love the way they cook it, it is just okay in terms of spices and sauces and I wish they'd concentrate more on it because it would have everything it needs then. Chicken Shop is in a building with 2 other 'of the moment' places (Pizza East and Dirty Burger). Not being local, maybe we were round the corner from hipsville, but I missed it on the walk from the tube, so the location seemed a bit incongruous. It's no reservations, and having arrived at 8pm on a Friday, we waited 20 mins for a table for 2 in the tiny waiting area where you can order drinks. There was no queue by 10pm. Whilst I wish this place was more central, I know we would have to wait much longer had we been in Soho. Staff are young and friendly, and the place is uber cool wrecked chic. There is an open kitchen which you can sit round, with the rotisserie spit in the background. Chicken Shop does exactly what it says on the tin, in the genre of Burger and Lobster. Exquisitely done chicken in 1/4, 1/2 or whole portions (£4/8/14.50) is the only item on the menu. A 1/4 portion was generous. It was so good that I ate the skin, and I never eat the skin. Chips were pretty good although the coleslaw was nothing to write home about. Apple pie was tasty with generous chunks of apple and a really good crust, but a tad over sweet. I fully enjoy the Chicken Shop. Is it the absolute, hands down, best chicken I've ever tasted? No... as another reviewer said, Pio Pio in NY might top the charts there. But the chicken is consistently good, and you always know what you're getting. The avocado salad isn't really worth the 4GBP, because it's just chunks of avocado with lettuce and a vinaigrette, but I seem to keep getting it. It's good vinaigrette, okay? And the avocado provides a cooling counterbalance to the hot sauce, both regular and smoky. The chips are decent. Not really worth it unless you're craving the carbs - I really doubt they're homemade and aren't much better than frozen. Service is impeccable, though - they manage to keep an eye on you without being over-the-top intrusive or making you feel rushed. And the apple pie with homemade vanilla bean ice cream is a treat in itself. Pricewise, it's more than fair. A friend and I went tonight and got a half chicken, two sides, a pint, and apple pie for 26 GBP. Definitely worth a visit if you have an excuse to be in the area (especially combined with a visit to the Southampton Arms pub up the street), but probably not worth a trek from the other side of London, to be honest. read more

Really great chicken, even better than Nandos. I think it is the quality of the chicken, the firm sinews of the meat can really we be felt, it is even tastier and without a fatty feel. The marinade is also superb and the tomato ketchup seems freshl made. The service is superb with a really friendly feel. The decor is the modern uber trendy rustic feel, with authentic antiquated old fashioned wooden furniture and decor with some brilliant and interesting pieces. The trendy rustic feel is big with twenty somethings, so this is the main age. A great place, not overly priced and a good recommendation. read more

I've been here 5 or 6 times - and there's a reason for it - the food is amazing! The restaurant is located in the basement, under a pizza restaurant and is of a medium size so it can get busy very quickly. A word of advice - when being seated, ensure you are seated at a table and not at the back of the shop where the chefs chop the chicken! It can get very messy, very quickly! However, if you are wearing a sauce coloured shirt you'll have no problem. Don't wear white! I'm a creature of habit and always get half a chicken, corn on the corn with garlic butter, crinkly fries and their avocado salad. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Try and go as early as you can to ensure you get a table. If you are asked to wait they are happy to take your number while you nip across the road to the local watering hole! read more

Following recent trends Chicken Shop is a no-booking restaurant which serves only one main dish chicken. Set in an American style dining room with a long bar facing the rotisserie, the Soho Groups latest venture is situated behind and unmarked door in the basement of the new Pizza East branch. But be warned; expect to have to wait for a table due to its already evident popularity. My visit didn't start off too well with a 45 minute wait, but once seated the service was swift and friendly and the surroundings are great. With such little options (size of chicken and sides) ordering is quick and our food was brought over to the table in no time at all. The chicken was fantastic, grilled on a rotisserie it was juicy with crispy skin. Our chips which accompanied the meal were very crunchy but unfortunately the butter lettuce and avocado salad wasn't as good, with the avocado not being quite ripe. Overall the food is very pleasing, miles better than any other chicken shop. This restaurant ticks all the right boxes. The restaurant was lively and looks like a hip version of an American diner. More importantly it concentrates on one thing and delivers it extremely well and quickly at very good value. One worth checking out. read more

A chicken shop. Its just that. A choice of quarter, half or whole rotisserie chicken cooked to perfection. The sides were spot on, fries cooked perfectly, slaw was flavoursome without too much mayo, buttered corn on the cob was delicious. A small selection of sauces added a little fire to the experience with the smokey bbq and my fav the hot sauce. Mmmm fingerlicking goodness. Good atmosphere not too loud and excellent attentive service without being annoying. To top it off, a slice of deep filled apple pie. DAMN that's good. I don't normally eat dessert but I just had to have some pie. The best I've had. Bursting with apples and cinnamon in a crunchy pastry. If you like chicken, this is a must. Back in New York, there was this bangin' chicken restaurant called Pio Pio that had the moistest chicken ever. Clearly, this review is not about Pio Pio, it's about the Chicken Shop but Pio Pio set the standards for me as to how moist a chicken can be cooked without being raw. Chicken Shop's chicken wasn't bad, as in it wasn't too dry like public school chicken during lunch, but it wasn't exactly smooth and silky either. It was the spices it was grilled with that made it flavorful and worth eating though. On its own, the chicken is quite good without any additional sauce. It has a really nice smoky flavor that will leave your fingers smelling delish for hours. I would have eaten all of it on its own without sauces, but if you give me hot sauce with my food.. I will use it! I'm glad that Chicken Shop's sauces were actually really spicy but not so that you couldn't taste anything anymore. Mixing the smoky and spicy sauce together was awesome. The sauces, in my opinion, made the chicken a star higher than what it could have been originally. They do sell their hot sauce in big jars. It was last Sunday when I went here and I am still salivating over the thought of those sauces..honestly wish I had bought some :(. Aside from the chicken, I also tried a little bit of all the side items. My favorite was the cole slaw. LOVE cole slaw. This one was particularly good because it was very crunchy but not heavy in mayonnaise at all, yet still had that satisfying savory taste of mayo.. kinda like when you order a tofu burger and it actually tastes like a hamburger? Since it wasn't doused in mayonnaise, I felt good ordering it a second time during the same meal! I also tried the butter lettuce and avocado salad cause I love avocados! As another reviewer said, it wasn't anything special; it was literally just fresh avocados with butter lettuce and a bit of vinegar? You could probably whip up its equivalent at home without paying 4 pounds for it. Corn was nothing special as well. In fact, had to shake some salt on it cause it wasn't flavorful enough. I hope they're using salted butter back there to cook the corn! And lastly, the desert was a little bit of everything too. Even though the brownie wasn't the star of past reviews, I thought it was very well crafted..super chocolatey and a nice crusty layer on top of it. The lemon cheesecake is a must if you like cheesecake and lemons! It was very light, yet creamy, and not at all too tart. So simple yet so divine. As for that apple pie..hmm..that apple pie.. I was really looking forward to it but it wasn't as good as I had hoped. The pie crust wasn't as crusty as I wanted and the apple filling was a bit too soft as I prefer more of a crunch and texture, not just mushiness. This may also be due to the fact that we poured heavy cream all over it - so if I'm ever back here, thinking I'll skip the heavy cream next time! My waistline agrees. read more

This was amazing! The atmosphere was wonderful - you can't book a table but there is a table that they serve drinks at and you can chill whilst you wait - we waited maybe 40 minutes. Not much to choose from! 1/4, 1/2 or whole chicken but the herbs it is marinated in are wonderful. Their chips and salad are awesome and they come with the best aioli. To make it even better the dessert is wonderful - we had the cheesecake and the apple pie and we couldn't work out which was better - only comment would be the apple pie needs hot custard! Super juicy chicken, great Camden Town Brewery beer on tap, delicious sides, super speedy, and seeing a guy whack a rotisserie chicken to pieces with a cleaver in front of you while sitting at the bar is fun. The hot sauces taste a bit overly powdery from too much dried spices rather than fresh, but that doesn't stop me from dousing it all over my food till I'm sweating and hiccuping. If they put a bit more work into their hot sauces and went a bit easier with the olive oil on the avocado salad, I'd bump my review up a star. read more
