When one finds one's self sailing across 190 (not too quickly, I hope, because of the many speed traps!), Chicken King is a nice little local spot to grab a basket of fried shrimp, a burger, or (perish the thought!) some chicken. This is a locals' haunt that's cheap and cheerful, and the food has always been great. This isn't haute couture fare, but it doesn't aspire to that either. We stopped at Chicken King on our way home from traveling to see family. We'd passed through Port Barre several times and commented that we really should stop, and finally we did! It was fantastic. The food was prepared fresh, and it all tasted good. The service was friendly, too, and bonus? They have ACTUAL fried pies, like pies ought to be. I never stop here enough. The chicken is perfectly cooked,, crispy on the outside and moist and juicy with a perfect slight spice on the inside. This time I had the dirty rice which was omemade and full of flavor and spice. So much better than what I find in New Orleans. I felt like it was my mom's home cooked food. The Sweetest lady greeted us at the drive through window. I am sure she could tell we were super hungry because we forgot to order a drink. We ordered 3 wings and a roll each. It was amazing crispy and flavorful with a little kick of spiciness in the back. The seafood was fresh. It was a bit overpriced. I got 5 shrimp and 1 catfish fillet for right at $12. I wouldn't say I liked the side, but that's not their fault. I'm from the East coast, where if it's meat in your rice, most of the time, it's pork or hamburger. I believe the rice dressing has liver in it. Overall, it's worth the stop. Great local diner to stop for a quick bite to eat on a long drive. The chicken tenders were juicy and delicious paired with the mashed potatoes. Crab cake sandwich was a nice alternative to chicken, but the sweet potato fries were a little disappointing. Now this was a great place to have lunch. I literally ate 3 times of this meal, at a very low cost. The wing alone which I ordered mostly out of curiosity almost filled me up before I even got my actual lunch. Now I can't say that the wing was incredibly good, I feel like it disappointed on the seasoning category and lacked a little bit more flavor. This really made it all worthwhile because I love Cajun style fried chicken. Unfortunately, they didn't have Duck gumbo or any gumbo, but I ordered the 4 piece white combo with a small side of rice dressing, small Cajun fries, and a soda. Had to wait 20 minutes, but so worth it. It was crispy, hot, a bit spicy, and so damn good. The rice dressing was outstanding. I had like half leftover which I ate for breakfast the next day. Soon as I opened the bag, I knew I'd be in love with the onion rings. They're made w/ that flaky, seasoned batter that I love. I could eat a whole bag full of just the onion rings. This little spot is the perfect lunch stop if you are passing through. The bbq pork Po boy was to die for!!!! So tasty and super generous with the quantity. The tenders and the battered Cajun fries are also a nice choice! The only thing I didn't like too much was the coleslaw... This is quite simply some of the best fried chicken you will ever eat. It's in a very out of the way (for me) location on Highway 190 near Port Barre. And it's very no-frills with paper trays, plastic utensils, etc. But you don't come here for the ambience. You come here for the fried chicken. Today I had a three-piece dinner which consisted of two chicken breasts and one wing along with one side (coleslaw which was not so good). The chicken was perfectly seasoned with a heavy dose of cayenne and garlic powder. It was fried to perfection with the meat nice and juicy and the crust perfectly brown and crunchy.
