My dad was an avid fisherman and shrimper and I've probably eaten more seafood and fish in my life than most. This little market is clean, it smells clean and it appears spotless which is one of the utmost important parts of preparing and selling fresh seafood and fish. It's crawfish season and I couldn't be happier to be in Louisiana this time of the year, I came here the first time during my visit for 100 lbs of live crawfish and some fresh jumbo Gulf Shrimp. Let me tell you folks if you've never participated in a fresh crawfish boil it should be on your bucket list. We caught this delectable mud-bugs as a kid and always looked forward to catching enough to have a boil but going out to a local restaurant or bar that featured these boils was okay as well but nothing compares to doing it yourself. Well over the years the art of boiling hundreds of pounds of live crawfish became the norm, I'd put my son's skill set against anyone and he definitely has the set-up to do it right. The attached photos will show there's a lot more to it than simply boiling water, it really is an art - the perfect blend of seasonings, the perfect temperature and contact tine also known in these parts as "soak time". Add in lots of corn on the cob, red potatoes, onions and mushrooms and it's magical of course the key ingredients is always lots of family and friends. This place provided Grade A Crawfish when it comes to the size and quality, lots of places offer live crawfish this time of the year but I'm sold on this place. My second visit here was less focused I was preparing to go back to Florida and although crawfish was still in the forefront of my thinking I knew I'd never travel with an ice chest of live crawfish and in my neck of the woods freezing whole crawfish is not ever an option so I was looking for fresh clean tail meat frozen for use at a later date (mainly crawfish étouffée) but maybe I could get creative and make some crawfish boudin, jambalaya or a fresh stuffing for a nice redfish or snapper I'll figure it out. I am sure I'll be visiting this place as much as I can in the future, the friendly staff was very accommodating and being I have family in the area, shipping it from here to Florida isn't that big of a deal, it's impossible to cook traditional Louisiana cuisine without fresh ingredients from Louisiana so I'm fortunate that way. This place is a little out of the way but well worth the drive if anywhere in the Lake Charles area...

We had about $200 of groceries and the one behind us has about $100 maybe more. After unloading onto the belt we were all told "only cash" by the poor cashiers that had that "deer in the headlights" look. This is the second time my husband had this happen in the last few months. Something has to be done or yall lose clientele. Right now we are heading back out but to KROGERS!

Now let me give credit where credits due - Rouses Market is a level above anything in town well at least in Moss Bluff being everyone here still has a Lake Charles address. Oh yea there Walmart Market Place with its parking lot filled 24/7 and then there's Amazon the store that will eventually crush them all as soon as the old touchy feely generation goes to the promise land, but until that time you have to experience a Rouses Market its Louisiana through and through. I mean tell me where you can match the line up I observed today e.g. fried chicken seasoned with crawfish boil seasoning, fresh turtle meat, fresh Louisiana crawfish tails, roux, jars of gumbo, étouffée, shrimp with their head still on and a fricking "king cake" oh yea I could go on and on and on but you get the picture or you just don't care because you stopped in for a loaf of French bread and a Yoo-hoo. I came here looking for something to throw on the grill and found it, the butcher cut me four one inch and a quarter thick ribeyes that any carnivore would crawl through three miles of cypress swamp just to light the grill their cooked on - no seriously these were some serious steaks. But wait one of the things I love about Rouses is that they use "locally sourced" everything when it's available and the quality meets their high standards. If some of this sounds familiar it should for some of you - it's exactly what was said when Market Basket was being built decades ago...

In addition to being a great seafood restaurant, it's also a seafood market where you can pick up things to cook at home. It's convenient to I-10, so travelers could easily exit, eat, and get back on the road. This is a simple and easy place to navigate when you know the method. First grab a menu or look at the one on the wall, next walk up to the counter and order and pay. You'll get a number you carry to a table. A server will bring you your food when it's ready, which generally is pretty quick. Then you eat and leave. What to eat? Well that's a good question! Most everything there is great. Seafood is the star of the show, and one can't go wrong with a seafood platter. This is a huge pile of everything that can serve two normal humans. Too often I ordered the Medium Shrimp Platter, there's nothing wrong with this choice, but I needed to try other different things. A Seafood Stuffed Baked Potato is a great choice, and very filling. For the grazers there are some solid whole meal salads. Last time I was in I just got a Fish Platter, which has two huge fillets with fries, coleslaw, and bread. Gumbo and etouffe are good choices too! I really have no idea if their dessert is any good as I never have room for any. I guess one could get some to go...

You like it hot they got it, you like it smoked they got it, you're want mild Boudin they have more than you've ever dreamed of. While growing up in Southwest Louisiana I was always told a Cajun Lunch consisted of "a yard of Boudin and a six pack of beer" it appears that still holds true today. Ohhhh you're not familiar with Boudin- The term "boudin" in the Acadiana cultural region of Louisiana is commonly understood to refer only to boudin blanc and not to other variants. Boudin blanc is the staple boudin of this region and is the one most widely consumed. Also popular is seafood boudin consisting of crab, shrimp, and rice. Boudin is also referred to as rice sausage outside of Louisiana of course, containing lots of green onions, red pepper and other Cajun spices, pork and liver all ground and cooked then mixed with rice prior to stuffing it inside a natural or synthetic casing - it can be smoked or eaten as is, it's often eaten alongside saltine crackers and Louisiana Hot Sauce. This is a beautiful store it may be the flagship store for Market Basket, it's always very clean and the staff is very friendly. I think it's probably one of the nicer grocery stores in the area, if I'm in town there's no doubt I will pay them a visit with my ice chest in tow...
